I`m dreaming of a Whites Christmas
Friday evening sees the start of a Xmas programme for North End that sees us travel, firstly, to South Wales and ending up in the North East interspersed with two games at Deepdale. Swansea (7.45pm ko) is the destination on Friday in, what is, just about the worst possible fixture possible on Xmas Friday. We follow up on Boxing Day with a Deepdale sell out TV game against high flyers, Leeds United (12.30pm ko) and the following Friday, the 29th, we entertain a re-invigorated Sheffield Wednesday side under the Deepdale lights(7.45pm ko). We finish the Festive programme with another TV game, away at Sunderland (12.30pm ko) by which time plenty might have happened at Deepdale. The Swansea game comes on the back of an absolutely diabolical 1-5 home defeat at the hands of Watford and a repetition of that performance would surely stoke the fires in the Deepdale boardroom.
A few days on and I am still in shock at what I witnessed at Deepdale last Saturday afternoon. A very decent first forty minutes only to go in level at the break. A start to the second half that you would be fortunate to find on a school playing field and North End were two -one down. From that moment on we lost our shape, our confidence and any chance we had of taking anything from the game. Just what the manager said to the boys at half time is anyone's guess but it clearly didn't work as he was found wanting tactically for the umpteenth time. The fact that it only finished five is probably down to Watford declaring as the North End defensive structure was non existent. I don`t think I have ever seen Deepdale as empty with twenty minutes to go as the vast majority of supporters had decided that enough was enough. It was abysmal.
North End go to the Liberty Stadium still in eighth place in the Championship but could drop five or six places if results go against them this weekend. We face a Swans side without a permanent manager and with just eleven points from eleven home games so far this season. They have scored thirteen goals and conceded fourteen so if you fancy a correct score flutter on this encounter then a 1-1 looks the most likely outcome. However for North End to achieve that they must defend better than our last visit to the Liberty when we were 0-3 down at half time eventually losing 2-4. It was another tactical abomination that evening for the travelling faithful. However we must clear our heads after the Watford game and be positive in everything that we do. It is not the toughest game on paper but the way North End are playing who would try and predict any outcome. I will go for the draw but I hope for the win.
An early Boxing Day start sees Leeds return to Deepdale and with a sell out crowd this promises to be a full bloodied affair. The Peacocks have travelled fairly well this season winning five and drawing two of their eleven games on the road taking a total of seventeen points. Just which North End will turn up for this game is anybody`s guess but I think this will be a game unlike your run of the mill Championship game and I have a sneaky suspicion it will be more like a cup-tie. North Ends record at Home against Leeds is not brilliant having won only three times in the ten games played at Deepdale this century. Clearly there will be some changes to the side over the festive period but these wholesale changes dont sit well with me and I hope Ryan Lowe curtails his multi changes to try and get some structure back in the side.
And finally this week:- I`ve never been someone who shouts for the managers head because constant changes lead to instability at football clubs and there is no better current example of that than Manchester United. However the closer the Swansea game gets the more I think about the final hurrah of Graham Westley. Wins were few and far between and a long distance away game at night saw the end of Westley. I was at Yeovil that evening along with another 131 hardy souls. North End took the lead but lost 1-3 and the following morning Mr Medals departed this parish. This situation feels eerily similar although I absolutely hope North End win the game, of course, but I really do think that a another woeful display and a slide down the league on Saturday afternoon may be too much for the Deepdale board. I really hope Ryan Lowe turns this round but it has to start happening and it has to start happening now.
Merry Christmas

The Boxing Day game that changed women’s football
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was Boxing Day, 1920 and 53,000 spectators were packed inside Goodison Park for the big game of the festive football calendar. There was so much fervour surrounding the match, as hordes of fans flocked across Stanley Park, that as many as 15,000 more people were said to have been turned away outside.
But they were not there to watch 22 men kick a leather ball around. In fact, this was a women’s football match.
The stars of the show were Dick, Kerr Ladies FC, a team made up of World War One munitions factory workers from Preston, who had started playing football in 1917 to raise money for hospitalised soldiers.
They had played their first game on Christmas Day, 1917, when 10,000 spectators watched them at Preston’s Deepdale. They wore black and white striped jerseys, sky blue shorts and black and white socks, plus hats – deemed compulsory at the time because of their long hair.
By 1920, after enjoying an unbeaten tour in France that boosted their publicity and popularity, they were used to attracting much larger audiences.
Speaking to The Game Changers podcast, Gail Newsham, the author of ‘In a League of their Own’ which tells the story Dick, Kerr Ladies, said: “Women’s football was growing up and down the country during the [First World] war, with the male league program suspended. Women were playing football as part of the war effort to raise money for people affected by the war.
“Dick, Kerr Ladies [initially] raised money for the soldiers of the local hospital, Preston’s Moor Park Military Hospital. The team grew from strength to strength, playing most of the home games at Preston North End.”
Newsham, 67, was a two-time Women’s FA Cup semi-finalist in her own playing career with Preston Rangers, who are now known as AFC Fylde Women. Her love affair with the story of Dick, Kerr Ladies began with a 1992 reunion and she has dedicated much of her life to their story ever since. The more information she gathered regarding the team, the clearer it became that they had raised a remarkable amount of money for charity.
“It would be in excess of £10 million in today’s money,” Newsham added. “Some of the girls lost their own brothers [in the war]. It must have been so hard for them and they wanted to give something back in any way that they could.”
Yet Dick, Kerr Ladies were not merely fundraisers. By all accounts, they were exceptional footballers, playing at a time when the women’s game was thriving.
Winger Lily Parr became an icon. Described as a chain-smoker with a lethal left foot and a “kick like a mule”, she had been just 14 years old when she began playing for the team. She would become one of the sport’s top goal-scorers and was credited with scoring five times in a single international game against France in a 5-1 win in 1921.
She is estimated by Fifa to have scored over 900 goals before she retired, aged 45, while other reports state she netted more than 1,000 times. The National Football Museum in Manchester is set to open a gallery dedicated to her life in spring 2021.
Of course, Parr was not the only star name. Defender Alice Kell, Dick, Kerr Ladies’ first captain, also developed a fine reputation across the sport. Centre-forward Florrie Redford scored a reported 170 goals for the club, with Redford and 4ft 10in Jenny Harris scoring in England’s first recorded international against France.
Dick, Kerr Ladies, whose name related to the business that owned that factory in which the players worked – Dick, Kerr and company – were said by their manager, Alfred Frankland, in 1937, to have played 437 matches, winning 424 and losing just seven, while scoring 2,863 goals.
Their attendance of 53,000 for their Boxing Day fixture at Goodison – which saw them win 4-0 against St Helens Ladies – would make a significant mark in the history books, setting a British record for a women’s football crowd. It remained the largest crowd for a women’s game in England for nearly 92 years, not being eclipsed on UK soil until 70,584 people saw Great Britain beat Brazil 1-0 at Wembley during the London 2012 Olympics.
In the modern era, Women’s FA Cup finals at England’s national stadium are used to large turnouts, but even the cup’s competition-record crowd of 45,423, from Chelsea’s victory over Arsenal in May, 2018, is no match for the masses that gathered on Merseyside to see Dick, Kerr Ladies.
Similarly, no Women’s Super League crowd has yet come close – the WSL’s best single attendance so far saw 38,262 watch a north London derby last year.
That begs the question: How did Dick, Kerr Ladies bring in such large crowds 100 years ago, with the kind of fanbase that most clubs in the modern, professional era – male or female – can only dream of?
Most critically, a monumental turning point came in the following December, when a decision was taken by the Football Association that would change the course of women’s football forever.
Just under a year after that famous match on Merseyside, the FA banned women’s football matches from being played on FA pitches.
It was a ban that would last 50 years until 1971 and undoubtedly stunted the growth of the sport, to say the least. Those behind the decision claimed that football was “quite unsuitable for females”. They cited potential impacts to women’s fertility if they were injured during play.
Dick, Kerr Ladies and many other women’s team’s played on, defying the ban, but landmark games at grounds like Goodison had been outlawed and, playing predominantly at more recreational facilities, crowds did not return on anywhere near the same scale.
“For 50 years women’s football was then in the wilderness,” Newsham continued. “In my opinion, the Goodison match was the turning point, really. Throughout 1921, there was trouble brewing and there were people questioning it [women’s football] and all the money involved. ‘Was it going to the right places?’ The FA made it increasingly more difficult for clubs to let them use the grounds.
“They couldn’t have all these spectators going to watch women’s football because they needed them to populate the men’s games. [Now] we’ve still got a bit of catching up to do.”

New Mosque For All
Timelessness In Religion
While architecture styles could change, religious dates, rituals and festivals persist. Thus, the fundamental challenge of the design of a new mosque lies in the extraction and interpretation of the essence of a religion that could reflects in its spatial layout which is timeless in serving the above.
In traditional Islamic architecture, the external courtyard (“sahn”) with the washing area (“wudu”) and the prayer hall with the dome are the two critical areas which are indispensable in constructing the entering sequence as well as hierarchy of space. These two external and internal voids form the basis of the entire mosque.
The minarets were reimagined as the three walls around the “sahn” which continues to serve their traditional purpose without the addition of piercing towers, safeguarding the pristine geometry of the contemporary mosque.
The Sacred Geometry
Kaaba, a minimalist orthogonal box, is the most sacred and important structure in Islamic architecture. Located at the centre of Islam’s most important mosque, the Masjid al-Haram in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, it is considered to be the House of God (“Bayt Allah”) and the direction of prayer (“qibla”) for all Muslims around the globe during “salah”. It is surrounded by pilgrims around the Islamic year every day.
This sacred orthogonal geometry resonates with the highly contemporary and basic form of architecture – a rectilinear cube with two horizontal plans and four walls as envelop. The external courtyard and prayer hall was then introduced into the massing creating a highly open versus a highly enclosed space.
Aligning with the axis of the street, the massing was in perfect harmony with the context. However, it is not facing straight to the direction of prayer which is of paramount importance. Thus, the prayer hall as an inner void is rotated while concealed within the overall massing to face straight to “gibla”, which creates a moment of surprise in the spatial sequence.
An Iconic Envelope
The outer envelope was inspired by mosaic tiles which are highly traditional to Islamic architecture. However, there was an up-scale in the texture which creates a more iconic and dramatic façade together with its glazed and reflective surface. The reflection distorted by the tiles due to concavity resembles the talisman against the evil eye “al-ayn”.
Inside the prayer hall, the giant dome, which is a crucial symbolism of Allah’s universe, is constructed with a giant ocular and layers of fenestration for visual connections between programs and levels but also opens the roof for sunlight and air.
Inclusivity and specificity
The external courtyard or “sahn” is a very specific feature in Islamic Mosque as it serves as the main gathering space. However, instead of following the tradition of a fully enclosed courtyard, contemporary religious architecture should also facilitate exchange and connection in a modern world where diversity thrives. The two corners of the external courtyard is opened up for a streamlined circulation which smoothen the transition between the outside realm and the public courtyard inside the mosque.
Moreover, floor paving from outside extends into the courtyard and vegetation patches of the courtyard slides under the elevated walls of the mosque, creating the delusion of a mosque floating above a continuous garden plane that signifies the public realm juxtapostiion on the mosque footprint.
Those are a gentle yet powerful gesture that reflects the notion of inclusivity in contemporary religion and the ubiquitous faith of harmony across humanity.

PHIL'S PRESSING THE RIGHT BUTTONS!
Racehorse trainer Phil Kirby, a player at Preston in the mid-nineties when David Beckham was at Deepdale, and who booted football into touch -  heads for the Cheltenham Festival next week. Leader racing columnist Andrew Atkinson reports. WHEN it comes to name dropping in football they don't come much bigger than David Beckham. "I was a Preston North End at the same time as David Beckham," said Phil Kirby, racehorse trainer, who is heading for the Cheltenham festival next week with some of his stables stars. Fellow Lancastrian, North Yorkshire trainer Kirby was at Deepdale in the youth team when icon Beckham was on loan from Manchester United in the mid nineties. Kirby, a qualified farrier and former jockey, heads for the Cheltenham festival with stable ace Lady Buttons. "Lady Buttons had been a star," said Kirby. "She is very straightforward, a nice character and a proper workhorse, with so much speed - rapid," said Kirby. "After football racing was always something I wanted to do," said Kirby who has a 50-strong string of horses at Richmond, north Yorkshire. "Lady Buttons has been a star for the last few years," said Kirby ahead of the Cheltenham festival which takes place during March 12-15. "She is entered in both the Champion Chase and Mares Race, with the latter looking likely the race she'll go for," said Kirby. "Let's see how things pan out," he added. Kirby woos about Lady Buttons: "She has natural ability, and handles a cut in the ground. "She jumps really well - and knows where the winning line is. She goes best over two miles," said Kirby. Kirby, who helped him father during his teenage years in the greyhound circuit, something that has aided him well in his chosen racing career two decades on, has a plethora of entries at Cheltenham. Whoshotthesheriff is entered in the Skybet Supreme Novices Hurdle; *Lady Buttons is entered in the OLBG Mares Hurdle and Niven is entered in the Close Brothers Novices Handicap on March 12. Top Ville Ben is entered in the RSA Insurance Novices Chase, and *Lady Buttons in the Betway Queen Mother Champion Chase on March 13. Blaklion, set to run in the Aintree Grand National in April, has also been entered to run in The Pertempts Network Final Handicap at Cheltenham on March 14, and the Gold Cup on March 15. "It feels as if things are coming together now. Fingers crossed," said Kirby. Kirby, who left school as became an apprentice jockey, winning on his first ride, quipped: "It went downhill after that." After three years in the saddle Kirby quit, turning his hands to become a farrier, of which still comes in handy when he occasionally shoes his horses. Kirby also has entries at Cheltenham for Nautical Nitwit in the Sun racing Stayers Hurdle and Courtown Oscar in the Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge on March 14. Wemyss Point and Sakhees City are both entered in the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys Handicap on March 15.
