Delhi AIIMS Doctors Perform Risky Heart Surgery On Baby Inside Womb
The procedure is done under ultrasound guidance, "We placed a needle through the mother's abdomen into the baby's heart, a senior AIIMS doctor said.
Tumblr media
New Delhi: AIIMS Delhi performed successful balloon dilation in a grape-sized baby's heart in the mother's womb.
A 28-year-old pregnant patient was admitted to the hospital with three previous pregnancy losses. The parents wished to continue the current pregnancy after the doctors communicated about the child's heart condition and consented to the procedure with a wish to improve the outcome.
The procedure was done at the Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre, AIIMS. The team of interventional cardiologists and fetal medicine specialists performed a successful procedure.
According to the team of doctors from Department of Cardiology & Cardiac Anesthesia, along with Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology (Fetal medicine) of AIIMS, "The fetus and the mother are both doing well after the procedure. The teams of doctors are monitoring the growth of the heart chambers to ultimately determine the baby's future management."
"Some types of serious heart diseases can be diagnosed while the baby is in the mother's womb. Sometimes, treating them in the womb may improve the outlook for the baby after birth and lead to near normal development," the team further said.
This procedure is called Balloon dilation of an obstructed valve in the baby's heart.
The procedure is done under ultrasound guidance, "We placed a needle through the mother's abdomen into the baby's heart. Then, using a balloon catheter, we opened the obstructed valve to improve blood flow. We expect and hope that the baby's heart will develop better and the heart disease will be less severe at birth," explained the senior doctor who performed the surgery.
The doctor said that such a procedure can have a risk of life of the fetus and has to be performed with utmost care.
"Such a procedure is very challenging as it can risk even the life of a fetus that also it has very precisely. Everything has to be done under all ultrasound guidance. Commonly all the procedures we do under angiography, but this can't be done. Everything has to be done under ultrasound guidance. And then it has to be done very quickly because you're going to puncture the major heart chamber. So if something goes wrong, the baby will die. It has to be very quick, shoot and dilate and come out," the senior doctor from the team of Cardiothoracic Sciences Centre at AIIMS said.
"We did measure the timing, it was only 90 seconds," he added.

Chapter 1
Word count: 8H+
Genre: Fluff
Category: Alternate Universe
Premise: Ethan gets sent to AIIMS (med school in Delhi, India) for a conference.
Tumblr media
"No getting out of it, child." Naveen Banerji's voice was full of laughter, though his face gave nothing away.
"Naveen, you really expect me to spend three whole days with those med students at AIIMS? Especially after what happened at Stanford University?"
"Ah, Ethan, imagine how much they could learn from you. You're among the best diagnosticians across the globe."
Ethan cursed under his breath.
Naveen had suddenly gotten this 'absurd' idea of sending Ethan, who was in his first year of residency, to the medical conference in AIIMS. Poor Ethan didn't want to spend the whole time with students, not after his last conference. He had been hit on, flirted with, and asked questions capable of heating his cheeks. Not one single scientific question. Not one.
After that, Ethan had sincerely doubted what the students actually learnt at med schools.
But Naveen was equally persistent.
Ethan would have to go.
__________________
Ethan sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Fine" he conceded, glaring at his mentor resignedly.
All he got was a cheerful smile and a wave.
___________________
Leaving Naveen's house, he drove back home, deciding to start packing if he was to leave the next day.
___________________
Ethan stepped out into Indira Gandhi International Airport, staring around for a minute before calling for a cab and getting his luggage in.
India was definitely eye-catching. And rather cold. He hadn't expected Delhi to have a 7°C temperature in the late morning, given the amount of pollution.
As he looked out the window, mind absently thinking of the conference, he spotted the medical school.
Damn. That building was majestic.
Paying the driver, he stepped out, only to be greeted with camera flashes and loud claps.
Swallowing back a groan, he gave the people a painful smile, before the college Dean, Ms. Ruchira Dutta, stepped up to shake hands with him. "Ah, Dr. Ramsey. Thank you for coming here, it's a pleasure to have you."
Relieved, he nodded as he shook hands. "Pleasure's all mine, Madam."
As he was shown inside, he couldn't help smiling, as he looked around at the lecture halls and laboratories. It was almost like being back at JHU.
He was so engrossed, he didn't notice a tall student walking in his direction, her nose buried in a book.
As they bumped into each other, the student lost balance, almost toppling over the edge of the balcony.
Ethan reached out instinctively, pulling her to safety.
"Woah there, I'm so sorry, I didn't- Dr. Ethan Ramsey?!"
Ethan blinked in surprise. "How'd you know me?"
"Dr. Ramsey, I read your research papers on the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, and I was really inspired. It's really an honour to meet you."
Ethan gave her a brief nod. "Thank you."
He stared at her for a long moment.
The girl had startling green eyes, long hair styled into a French braid. She had a British accent, and for some reason, it reminded Ethan of his parents. She was reading, Ethan realized, one of his research papers.
"What are some key symptoms of the LNS?" He shot at her.
"The symptoms of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome include impaired kidney function, acute gouty arthritis, and self-mutilating behaviors such as lip and finger biting and head banging." She shot back with equal speed, pleasantly surprising Ethan.
"What deficiency do you think causes the Lesch-Nyhan syndrome?"
"Deficiency of the enzyme hypoxanthine-guanine phosphoribosyltransferase, in short, HPRT."
This time, Ethan was seriously impressed. He had yet to meet a student who could so perfectly rattle off the complex enzyme with total accuracy.
The Dean smiled, seeing the impressed glint in Ethan's eyes.
"Dr. Ramsey, meet Ms. Catherine Valentine, top student of AIIMS. She is in her final year of medical college. Your research has been an incredible inspiration to her. She reads your work every spare minute she gets."
"I'm impressed, Dr. Valentine. Keep up this performance." His smile came so genuinely, Ethan was almost surprised.
Catherine grinned. "Thanks, Doctor."

It was 2:39 a.m when a sudden sharp knock on his door woke him up. Rubbing his tired eyes, he sat up, wondering just who the hell was knocking at this ungodly hour.
He threw on a dressing gown and opened the door, only to come face to face with...what was her name again? Ah yes, Catherine Valentine. She was staring at him, rather eerily, with a glassy look in her eyes.
Suddenly, it hit him. She was sleepwalking.
Concerned, he tried to lead her back to her dormitory, but failed to find the room.
Sighing, he steered her back to his room, helping her get into bed, as he decided to sleep on the couch.
The rest of the night was peaceful.
It was 4 am when Ethan's eyes shot open. Getting up and dressing, he looked over to his bed.
Catherine was sleeping, the covers almost hiding her whole body. Only a few messy brunette locks were visible. Deciding she was asleep, he decided to brew some coffee. As he touched the cup to his lips, a yelp from the bed startled him.
Turning around, he saw a horrified Catherine staring at him as though she had seen a ghost.
"Morning, Dr. Valentine." He couldn't help the smirk which graced his lips.
"M-morning, Doctor." Catherine looked visibly embarrassed. "How did I end up here?"
"You were sleepwalking. I couldn't find your dormitory, and sleepwalking around college in the dead of the night isn't advisable or safe, so I had no other choice but to let you spend the night in this room."
"I'm so sorry I was a burden", Catherine looked away, but not before Ethan caught guilt written all over her face.
"You weren't. It's okay. Does this sleepwalking happen often?"
Catherine flushed a bright pink. "Well...my roommates have caught me doing that before....like...a lot of times..."
Ethan frowned. "That isn't normal. That is a visible sign of stress."
"Well yeah I'm in med school, it's not exactly a paradise club here."
A chuckle escaped Ethan. "Get back to your dormitory, Catherine. I'll see you at the conference. Good day."
Nodding, she wished him a good day and practically ran out of his room.
Oh, she's definitely not like other med students.

Chapter 2
Word count: 4H+
Genre: Fluff
Category: Alternate Universe
Premise: Ethan attends the AIIMS conference and a specific someone gives him butterflies.
Tumblr media
Ethan stared around as he stepped into the lecture hall. Medical charts were plastered all over the walls, a cosmic smart board attached to a wall with a podium in front of it. He sat down in a chair, in front of the students, as he watched Ms. Dutta step up to the microphone.
"Good morning students. Today, our Chief guest, Dr. Ethan Ramsey, will share his thoughts and insights regarding the medical industry and his own experience as a doctor. Dr. Ramsey, if you please."
Ethan stepped up, giving an almost imperceptible nod at the Dean before adjusting the mic. Just then, he spotted Catherine, in the first row, at the centre, smiling at him.
He couldn't help the returning a small smile before he started speaking.
Maybe he could just survive this, after all.
_________________
"........Being a doctor means failing at certain times. But what's important is that you get up every time you fall."
The whole hall was filled with claps and cheers.
"Thank you, Doctor. Anybody, any questions?"
The Dean's statement provoked an imperceptible groan from Ethan, as he feared the worst.
Scores of hands shot up as Ethan's eyes scanned the room.
"Yes?"
A tall, brown-haired boy stood up, a rather cheeky glint in his eyes.
"Is patient care fun?"
Ethan bit back a sharp retort as he glared at the student stonily, not bothering to keep his cool.
"Patient care is the core part of being a doctor. It's a serious experience, unless you want to face lawsuits and destruct your career even before it starts, all in the name of fun."
The student flushed, looking furious.
Just then, Catherine's hand shot up.
"Yes, Dr. Valentine?" Her name was out of his mouth before he could even stop himself.
Low, impressed murmurs echoed around the hall as the other students stared at her, wondering how such a prominent doctor knew Catherine.
"What's the most important virtue in a doctor?"
"Empathy. Kindness. Patience. You can gain medical knowledge and cure your patients, but it is equally important to make them feel comfortable and safe at the same time."
Catherine mouthed a thank you at him as he gave her a quick nod of approval.
As the questioning session continued, Ethan was relieved to find at least a few people who thought and spoke seriously.
Well. This wasn't that bad.
___________________
"Hi, Dr. Ramsey!"
Ethan turned around to see Catherine racing towards him.
"So? How'd you like the conference?"
"It wasn't bad."
"Mhm. That's high praise coming from you." Catherine's eyes were twinkling. "I guess I'll see you around, tomorrow, then."
Ethan nodded, thinking about the remaining two days. Suddenly-
"Catherine?"
She rotated, facing him.
"When do you graduate?"
"End of this month, why?" Her confusion was evident.
"Nothing. Which sect do you want to go for?"
"Internal medicine. I intend to go to JHU to finish my final year of med school, then apply to Edenbrook."
"You seem to be very focused on your goals."
"I am. So...I have class in like, 2 minutes, so I better be going because I don't want to be beheaded. See you around, Ethan."
Her first name usage induced butterflies in him, for reasons he couldn't decipher. It just felt so easy, so right.
He swallowed, trying to wipe off the smile that had broken through.
She didn't seem to have noticed her slip of tongue, for she didn't even glance back to apologize and rectify her mistake.
