Patna, India — At least 31 people died and 20 others were hospitalized in serious condition after allegedly drinking tainted liquor sold without authorization in eastern India, a top elected official said Thursday. The deaths occurred Tuesday and Wednesday and the victims belonged to three villages in Saran district of Bihar state where the manufacturing, sale and consumption of liquor are prohibited.   The deaths were reported in a district government-run hospital where the sick were brought by their families for treatment, said Dr. S.D. Sinha, the hospital chief.   Sale and consumption of liquor were prohibited in Bihar state in 2016 after women's groups campaigned against poor workers splurging their meager incomes on drinking.   Police officer Santosh Kumar said several of the 20 hospitalized had lost their eyesight.   Several opposition parties, including the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, held protests Thursday outside the state legislature building to demand the state's liquor ban be scrapped and some monetary compensation provided to the bereaved families.   Sushil Modi, the state BJP leader, said more than 1,000 people have died after drinking tainted liquor since the ban was imposed six years ago. The BJP is in opposition in the state.   Nitish Kumar, the state's top elected official belonging to the socialist party Janata Dal, rejected their demands and said the ban on the sale of liquor was "not my personal wish but a response to the cries of the women of the state."   Three people have been detained for questioning for allegedly selling spiked alcohol in the area, he said. Saran district is nearly 40 miles north of Patna, the Bihar state capital.
Deaths from illegally brewed alcohol are common in India, where illicit liquor is cheap and often spiked with chemicals such as pesticides to increase potency. Illicit liquor has also become a hugely profitable industry across India, where bootleggers pay no taxes and sell enormous quantities of their product to the poor at a cheap rate.   At least 28 people died and 60 others became ill from drinking tainted liquor in the western Indian state of Gujarat earlier this year. Gujarat is another Indian state where the manufacturing, sale and consumption of liquor are prohibited.
In 2020, at least 120 people died after drinking tainted liquor in India's northern Punjab state.

Ex Bihar MP's Surprise Dawn Release From Jail Amid Prison Rule Change Row
The current location of Anand Mohan Singh, who has served 15 years in jail for abetting the murder of an IAS officer in 1994, is not known.
Tumblr media
Patna: Former Bihar MP Anand Mohan Singh walked out of jail in the early hours today amid a huge row over the Bihar government's prison rule change that cleared the path for his release.
The current location of Singh, who has served 15 years in jail for abetting the murder of an IAS officer in 1994, is not known. His son and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MLA Chetan Anand is unreachable on phone and the family's house in Saharsa is locked.
The gangster-turned-politician was initially to be released around 7 am. But the sudden change of plan was reportedly made to avoid the media.
Singh was out on a 15-day parole for his son's wedding. During the break, he spoke to media. He returned to jail only yesterday.
The former MP's release from jail comes after the Nitish Kumar government in Bihar tweaked the jail rules. Earlier, anyone convicted in connection with the murder of a public servant on duty was not eligible for a remission in sentence. This was changed by the Bihar government, paving the way for the release of 27 convicts, including Singh, who have served 14 years or more behind the bars.
The move has sparked a huge controversy, with Nitish Kumar government drawing fire from the Opposition BJP. BJP's MP Sushil Kumar Modi, also Bihar's former deputy Chief Minister, has said Mr Kumar had sacrificed law to stay on in power with support from ally RJD.
Singh, who represented RJD in Lok Sabha, is considered a prominent Rajput face. And his release is being seen as a move to attract Bihar's upper caste votes in the 2024 general election. The release also comes against the backdrop of Mr Kumar meeting Opposition leaders to stitch a joint front to take on the BJP in 2024.
Singh, who faced multiple cases, was found guilty of instigating a mob that lynched district magistrate G Krishnaiah, a Dalit IAS officer, in 1994. Krishnaiah was attacked by a mob protesting with the body of Chhotan Shukla, another gangster-politician of Anand Mohan's party, who had been killed a day earlier. Singh was sentenced to death by a lower court in 2007, but the Patna High Court later commuted the penalty to life imprisonment.
The late IAS officer's wife has expressed disappointment over Singh's release. Speaking to NDTV, Uma Krishnaiah said, "We don't agree with the move. It's in a way encouraging the criminals. It sends out a message that you can commit a crime, and go to jail but then get freed and join politics. The death penalty was good."
The Central IAS Association, the top body for bureaucrats in the country, has slammed the move. "Such dilution leads to impunity, erosion of morale of public servants, undermines public order and makes a mockery of administration of justice," it has said.
Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati, too, has criticised the Bihar government's move that paved the way for Singh's release, calling it an "anti-Dalit" step.
Speaking to the media during his parole break, Singh had responded to the uproar over his release. Taking a dig at the BJP, he had said sarcastically, "A decision has been taken in Gujarat due to pressure by Nitish Kumar and RJD. Some people have been released and greeted with garlands." Asked if he was referring to the Bilkis Bano gangrape case, he said, "Yes, that's what I am referring to". BJP is in power in Gujarat.
He had said all the 27 people whose names are in the list for remission of sentence have served their time in the jail. "It's not that the state government is letting people walk free just like that. There is a Supreme Court directive."

Leaking official secret of military ops is treason: AK Antony
Tumblr media
NEW DELHI: Leaking of official secret of military operations is treason and those involved must be punished and the prime minister must come clean, Congress leader A K Antony said Wednesday referring to the purported WhatsApp chats of Republic TV editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami doing the rounds of social media. Addressing a joint press conference with party leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Salman Khurshid here, Antony said those involved in the “anti-national act” deserve no mercy and the government should immediately order an inquiry into information leak about the 2019 air strikes. “Leaking of official secret is a criminal act. Leaking official secret about military operation, national security matters, sensitive military operations especially military strike is treason, anti-national. They have to be punished for anti-national activities, for treason. They deserve no mercy,” he said. Referring to the WhatsApp chats between Goswami and ex-BARC CEO Partho Dasgupta, he said India’s national security has never been compromised in such a way and never have the high offices of the Prime Minister, home minister and others been “brazenly compromised”. “Does the Prime Minister, home minister, in fact the entire government have any moral, political, constitutional right to continue in office after such damning revelations? “We demand that the Prime Minister should come clean on these accusations immediately in order to restore the severely damaged credibility of the highest office of the country,” a joint statement by the leaders said. “Never before has India’s national security been so completely compromised. Never before has the office of the prime minister, office of the home minister, office of the law minister, office of the information and broadcasting minister been so brazenly compromised,” the statement also said. Antony said having worked with the military for long as former defence minister, they could never leak information about such operations and only one of the top five civilians in the government are suspect in the case. “It has to be enquired immediately on war footing as to who that person is. Whoever is responsible for the leakage must be punished for treason and this journalist who was in possession of sensitive military operations he has to be punished. The government must order a proper enquiry. Whoever is responsible, whoever is party to the leakage of this sensitive military operation deserves no mercy,” he said. Former home minister Shinde said the matter involved the violation of the Official Secrets Act and it would be raised in the budget session of Parliament starting January 29. He said the charges must be probed under the Official Secrets Act and added that the Congress would talk to other parties on a JPC probe into the matter. Asked about the joint parliamentary committee (JPC) probe into the matter, Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said he could not speak on behalf of other parties yet and would leave it to the wisdom of Parliament as it was only meeting in the next nine days. He also said the probe must bring out whether Goswami was merely bragging about his proximity to the government or whether he actually got help, which was a serious matter. Khurshid referred to certain references in the chats about the judiciary and asked whether the judiciary would take cognisance. “Never before did our judiciary come under such an attack. Never before has a senior leader been divested of his dignity in his death,” he said. He also said that the chargesheet filed by the Mumbai Police as part of the ongoing investigation in the TRP scam carries explosive details of “connivance, collusion and corruption at the highest level of the Modi government”. He alleged that a journalist colluded with the high and mighty of the government to get TRPs manipulated and he manipulated public opinion for the ruling party. “In the process India and every single Indian lose out on a chance for responsive, clean and progressive governance,” the party said. “The shocked nation has witnessed a reprehensible conduct of those in the highest echelons of power in defrauding every government structure, the atrocious and scandalous attack on India’s highest judiciary. The evil manner of playing with the life and dignity of BJP’s senior most cabinet minister has shamed and compromised the Modi government beyond repair and recognition,” the party statement said. On February 26, 2019, India had launched air strikes on what was said to be Jaish-e-Mohammed’s training camp in Pakistan’s Balakot.
