Angel on the brain I guess but while I'm talking bout him I do also think that his tendency to assume he knows best for everyone he cares about ever at all times even in the face of them actively telling him "no you dumb fucking cunt you are genuinely just wrong" is like. One of his most interesting character traits. Guy who is constantly pushing people away. Guy who will disrespect his loved ones wishes as long as it keeps them alive because at least then they'll still be around to be mad at him. And I wouldn't even say I think it's like the most coherent ongoing theme but I do enjoy it as an aspect of his character

I don't know of you've seen this, but for some reason sw3rfs in my country are also heavily anti surrogacy? I can see why in some contexts it can be seen as exploitative, but I don't think it's that big a deal and I wish I could afford it tbh? I never will, being broke af, but it'd be my preferred method to have a child if I get to have one since I have a paralyzing phobia to getting pregnant. What are your thoughts on surrogacy btw?

I have a very, very complicated opinion on surrogacy.

Just like I have very, very, very complicated on fostering, adoption, and fertility treatments in general. And the culture of entitlement to children, even at the children's expense.

I'm pro-surrogacy in the sense that, sure, you should be able to use your body however the fuck you want. You wanna make money selling off your womb? Sure, that's no more or less ethical than selling your muscles to build a fucking house or whatever. You wanna offer up 9 months of your life for free for your sibling who can't carry to term? Whatever, go for it.

And that is where my opinion ultimately ends in the sense that when push comes to shove... yeah, surrogacy should be a legal thing.

But it's hard to ignore the inherent exploitation in a lot of cases (that is often class based or racialized, just like the exploitation in a lot of adoption/foster-to-adopt cases). No, not in all of these cases... but in a lot of them.

And how I think a lot of surrogates are short-changed when it comes to rights. And how often surrogacy is just rich people pawning off their on a desperate class of people who can't really afford to say no.

Which... is like a lot of labor. So, again, in many ways it's no better or no worse than any other exploitation.

But it does still feel gross in that way. Just like minimum wage feels gross, even when it's actually high enough.

All that said, I think ANYONE who goes for a surrogacy should also be willing to spend some of their overwhelming wealth to lobby for better care in the foster system, better regulation of the adoption system, better funding and care for parents who want to do right by their kids but simply can't afford to (to make it so they can keep their children), and all that.

Because if you love kids, you better do fucking right by all the kids out there suffering. And I don't think adopting instead of surrogacy is necessarily part of that solution (because, again, a lot-but definitely not all--of kids are only up for adoption because their parents cannot afford to keep them, whatever that may look like for them) but I do think improving the lives of kids and parents who are impacted by adoption should be part of it.

And I'll admit upfront that I'm not educated enough on any of this to advocate for the best ways to do any of this.

I just know all these systems are heavily flawed and want people to pursue any of them in the least-flawed ways possible. Whatever that may mean. And that if you have the means to spend thousands risking someone else's life to avoid dealing with your phobia, you have the responsibility to make sure the system you're doing it through is the best it can be.

Cause, yeah, everyone has the right to use or sell their body however they want but also... we have the responsibility to do right by each other, too.

Your real take away from this long post should be: I should ask someone more educated on the topic. Also, someone who wants kids and maybe can be more sympathetic towards the "I'll do anything to have them" mindset because... that's not where a lot of my sympathy lies. My sympathy lies with kids being fucked over by the system and how even people who ~really love kids~ leave them behind.
