“Holy shit.”
Billy chuckled around his own bite while their unfinished game of backgammon sat on the coffee table. Steve licked pot pie gravy off his fork while the littles worked on their serving of peas, carrots, and some gravy-soaked crust.
“You weren’t kidding.”
“This is yummy,” small Billy said.
“Thanks for dinnerw, Biwwy,” small Steve seconded.
“Sorry you had to wait till midnight,” he replied, dipping an edge of crust in the gravy. His eyes flicked to Steve’s head perking up, and trying to go back to eating nonchalantly. “What?”
He shook his head. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard you apologize, that’s all.”
“I didn’t realize I’d set a precedent for letting tiny people starve.”
Steve’s eyes rolled onto him. “You know I didn’t mean it like that. I didn’t have anything to go off of except your free concert arguments with Max.”
“Max is free game because she’s my shithead sister.”
Steve snorted and reached for a napkin. “Whatever. They’re right, this is great, and thank you.”
“You’re only saying that because you think I’m leaving the leftovers.”
Steve froze and Billy bubbled with laughter. Steve made quick work of the lump in his cheek and haggled, “What do I have to do to keep them?”
“Beat me at backgammon, for a start.”
“What else?”
Billy lifted his head, a different smile on his face. “You like it that much?”
“I can follow a recipe, but my specialties are breakfast and improvising, which...is a fifty-fifty chance at being edible but not delicious. This is an actual home cooked meal type thing.”
“Keep talking sweet to me and I might let you keep half of it.”
Steve already had a mouthful of pie filling as he mumbled, “Deal.”
Both of their attentions moved to the littles yawning over their finished crumbs. Steve swallowed and announced, “Our score-keepers need to get to bed.”
Small Steve complained, “ ‘M not sweepy,” even as his eyelids heavily blinked over unfocused eyes.
Large Steve dug through a grocery bag for the extra small cotton swabs and summoned, “Come here.”
Billy watched with silent fascination as the smallest amount of toothpaste got applied to the swabs and Steve held them steady while the littles brushed their teeth. “B, get those back ones.”
His little body released an indignant huff and he made better work of his molars.
Steve topped off their shot glass with water and said as they rinsed, “Good job. I give you two a bath in the morning.”
“Not sweepy,” little Steve declared, but he shook his head with too much gusto and his body swayed with it.
“Then you don’t want a goodnight kiss?”
He gasped and clasped his hands over his tummy, eyes clamped shut as if that might help him stay still for Steve’s kiss atop his head. He got two for his troubles, while little Billy stood in the curve of big Steve’s hand, holding onto his fingers while lips touched his hair twice as well.
“Stevie too?” small Billy asked with heavy eyelids and warm cheeks. Steve crouched low enough for them both to kiss the flat of his cheeks beside his mouth.
Large Billy was not exempt, as three pairs of eyes locked onto him. He wiped his mouth of crumbs and waved a hand under a benign scoff. “Here we go.”
The littles reached up to hold his chin as they kissed the corners of his mouth. He made sure to hold onto little Billy’s headband as he walked away, hair floating free as the band left his skull.
“Nigh’ nigh’, Biwwy. See you tomowwow?”
“Probably. I’ve got a board game to win.”
Steve chirped, “Oh? We’re done here?”
Billy narrowed his eyes at him in a skeptical glare. “You two make sure he doesn’t change anything. ‘Kay?”
“ ‘Kay!” they echoed.
“See you tomorrow!” little Steve yelled as he ran to their shoebox room.
“G’nigh’, Stevie,” little Billy said.
“Goodnight, B. Sweet Dreams,” big Steve returned and gave the littles an extra tuck into their beds before taking his and Billy’s plates to the kitchen sink.
Billy followed him and leaned against the counter. “Not to get sappy, but they really love you.”
Steve smiled as the dishes filled up with soapy water. Then he turned the faucet off to let them soak. “They’re good little guys. So we’ll settle the leftovers dispute tomorrow?”
His features sank a little as he watched Billy already strolling toward the front doors. “I’ll know if you cheat, pretty boy.”
“I don’t need to cheat. The pie is mine.”
Billy threw an amused smirk over his shoulder, and heard Steve lock the doors as he went to his car.
Brushing their teeth is an ordeal, echoed in his head as he started his car and reversed out of the driveway -
Like a flinch, he checked his shirt pocket and found it empty. Billy shook his head and pushed the cassette tape sticking out of his radio back in. The music only provided a backdrop for his thoughts, though, particularly the wonder at how far Steve was willing to trouble himself to take care of these tiny people.
Even a tiny Billy Hargrove.
Billy made the decision before he was really conscious of it, but as he turned onto Curly Lane and cruised into the trailer park, he stuck to it. If anyone could use some kush, it was Steve. It’d be a good way to spend the rest of the pot pie, too, underneath a haze of sour smoke.
The noise of his car usually announced his presence enough, so the loud stumbling inside the double-wide came as a surprise after he knocked on the door. It was a good habit to stand away from the front door, especially an outward-opening one that Eddie burst open. “Oh. Hargrove. What’s uh.”
“Up?” he responded, deadpan.
Eddie’s head tilted with an annoyed, but patient frown. “What brings you to my castle? The usual?”
“Yeah, unless you’ve found something special.”
“Not the special you like,” he refused on his way back inside. Billy caught the door and let himself into the living room-kitchen area. The floor creaked underneath him, but all houses did in one way or another -
Something audibly fell on the other side of the trailer, presumably in Eddie’s room. He locked eyes with Billy where he had a kitchen scale on the counter. Why he kept his supply in the main part of the house instead of the den of his room, Billy didn’t know, and didn’t particularly care. But he offered, “Do you need to check that?”
“No, I’ve got enough shit in there to cushion anything precious that falls - ”
A distinct, metallic twang pierced the air, and without another word, Eddie marched to the back of the trailer. Billy might not have been bothered, if whispers were actually silent, which they very often were not.
“Hey, Munson,” he called down the short hallway.
“YeahjustgivemeaSECOND!”
Billy rubbed his eyes and looked at the clock on the wall. If this took too long, it was hardly going to be worth it. “Do you have a stray cat in there, or something?”
Eddie emerged in his customary flurry of long curls and flapping denim vest. “Yeah, a real rascal. Your usual is my usual.”
Billy pulled out some dollar bills and held them at the ready while Eddie finished using the scale and slid the dried crumbled over the edge to land in a baggie.
An electronic burp moved through the air like an amp being turned on. Eddie froze. His eyes flicked up to Billy’s, who crooned, “Smart cat.”
He zipped up the baggie and quickly traded the money in Billy’s hand. “Awesome. Now if that’ll be all - whatwhatwhatwhat are you doing?”
Billy strolled down the hallway toward the bedrooms. Eddie might’ve had a similar height as him, but Billy’s structure made Eddie mold himself against the wall in an effort to block him from his bedroom. “I’m flattered, Hargrove, but customers have to buy me dinner first.”
Eddie’s customer service smile evaporated as Billy gripped his vest and shirt and moved him aside. To his credit, Eddie looked mean when he was mad.
“I’m not here to judge your taste in girls, Munson, but I am making sure there’s some honor amongst criminals.”
His eyes widened over sputtering words. “What the hell is that s’pposed to mean? Don’t take me as some kind of - heyheyhey!”
Billy’s grip on the doorknob beat his and Eddie swung into his room with the door. It would’ve been funny, and it was, but Billy’s eyes froze on the small body hanging off of the guitar mounted on the wall. For not the first time, and what he annoyingly suspected to not be the last, Billy felt a creepy crawly feeling move across his spine. “You’ve got to be joking.”
Eddie sprang up in his face. “Look, man, I know this is weird and I’m not inclined to try and talk anybody out of a bad trip. I’m only mildly hurt that you bought some unreliable shrooms from somebody else - ”
“I’m not an artist, I don’t take hallucinogenics,” Billy snapped. “Where the hell did you find another tiny?”
Eddie’s mouth opened to keep talking, but then snapped shut over puckered lips like he intended to whistle. “Wait. Another? What do you mean, another?”

A Fairyland Yule
Ao3 link here A Fairyland Yule - Chapter 5 - Princessmh9 - Original Work [Archive of Our Own]
Chapter 5: A Family's First Yule
{As Genevieve and Ash stepped through the Fairy Ring Ash looked at Genevieve.}
{Ash} How do you feel love?
{Genevieve, taking a deep breath} I feel a mix of emotions but at least they finally believe me.
{Ash} That's a positive step, my love. Your family's belief in you and our world is important, and it opens the door to understanding and acceptance. We'll cherish this Yule together, and by the time we return, they may have a deeper appreciation for the magic that's part of your life.
{Genevieve} I hope so, Ash. I just want them to know the truth and understand that our love and family are strong, regardless of where we come from.
{With their hearts filled with hope, they continued their journey through the Fairy Ring and back to Fairyland, ready to embrace the Yule celebrations and create cherished memories together. As they stepped out of the Fairy Ring and back into the Royal gardens fresh snow was falling out of the sky as the sun was setting.}
{Ash} It's like stepping into a winter wonderland. Our first Yule together as a family, and I couldn't imagine a more magical setting.
{Genevieve} It truly is enchanting, Ash. Our family, our love, and the beauty of this realm—everything is a gift I treasure.
{As some of the snow flakes land on Elara she waves her tiny hands up to try to catch them.}
{Ash} Look at her, Genevieve. Elara is already embracing the magic of Yule.
{Genevieve} She's our little winter star.
{They walk back towards the castle. With the enchanting snowfall gracing the Royal Gardens and the castle standing tall against the winter backdrop, Genevieve and Ash returned to the heart of Fairyland. As they strolled hand in hand, the anticipation of the Yule celebrations filled the air with excitement and wonder. Elara, nestled in Ash's arms, continued to gaze at the falling snowflakes, her eyes wide with curiosity and delight. She waved her tiny hands, attempting to catch the delicate crystals as they danced around her. The snowfall seemed to have a magical quality, as if welcoming them back to the realm with open arms.
The castle, adorned with glistening icicles and wreaths of holly, stood as a beacon of Yule cheer. Its windows emanated a warm, inviting glow, and the sound of joyful laughter and music echoed from within. The scent of freshly baked treats wafted through the air, promising delicious Yule delights. As Genevieve and Ash approached the grand entrance, they were greeted by the cheerful voices of their fairy friends. Each familiar face radiated warmth and happiness, and the air buzzed with excitement. The fairies were dressed in their finest Yule attire, with colorful garments and twinkling accessories that added to the festive atmosphere.
Titania and Oberon stood at the entrance, their regal presence commanding attention. Titania's gown was resplendent in shades of green and silver, adorned with shimmering jewels that sparkled like starlight. Oberon, standing tall and proud, wore robes that mirrored the night sky, decorated with celestial patterns.}
{Titania} Welcome back home Genevieve and Nion.
{Genevieve} Thankyou Queen Titania.
{Oberon} How was the visit?
{Ash} It was very rocky at first. But after Genevieve managed to tell them her story, they seemed to warm up a bit.
{Oberon} That’s good to hear.
{Titania} The children and your parents Nion are waiting inside.
{They walked back inside and to the dining hall where a Yule Feast was waiting for them. The Yule Feast in Fairyland was a sight to behold. The dining hall was adorned with enchanting decorations that captured the spirit of the season. The long, grand table was covered with a rich, deep-red tablecloth that reached down to the floor. Golden candlesticks with flickering, warm candles were placed at regular intervals along the table, casting a soft, magical glow.
The table was set with exquisite dinnerware made of delicate porcelain, each plate and bowl featuring intricate patterns of snowflakes and ivy leaves. Crystal goblets sparkled with the light of the candles, waiting to be filled with the finest Meads and juices.The feast itself was a culinary masterpiece, prepared by the skilled chefs of the Seelie Court. The centerpiece was a roasted Yule ham, glazed to perfection and garnished with sprigs of fresh herbs. Surrounding it were platters of roasted winter vegetables, including carrots, parsnips, and Brussels sprouts, seasoned with herbs and spices. There were also bowls of creamy mashed potatoes, silky gravy, and cranberry sauce, offering a medley of flavors and textures to delight the palate. Freshly baked rolls, still warm from the oven, were stacked high in woven baskets, waiting to be slathered with butter.
For those with a sweet tooth, the dessert table was a true wonderland. There were mince pies dusted with powdered sugar, their golden crusts hiding a delectable filling of fruits and spices. A towering Yule log cake, adorned with edible mushrooms and marzipan figures, stood as a symbol of the season. Fresh fruits and nuts were artfully arranged in decorative bowls, offering a refreshing and healthy option. And, of course, no Yule Feast was complete without a variety of cookies and sweets, from gingerbread men to sugar-dusted snowflake-shaped treats. The air was filled with the tantalizing aroma of roasted meats, herbs, and spices, creating an atmosphere of warmth and comfort. Soft Yule carols played in the background, setting the mood for a festive and joyful gathering.
As Genevieve, Ash, and their family took their seats at the table, they couldn't help but feel grateful for the abundance of food and the love that surrounded them. Ash helped Genevieve sit down before handing Elara over to her to cradle in her arms. He then sits next to her as the Kings and Queens of the other Kingdoms in Fairyland smiled loving at the new parents. The Kings and Queens of the other kingdoms in Fairyland smiled warmly at the sight of Genevieve, Ash, and little Elara. Their eyes held a mixture of joy and admiration as they watched the young family gather at the Yule Feast. It was a moment of celebration not only for the Seelie Court but for all the realms of Fairyland. As Oberon stood up, the hall fell silent, and all eyes turned toward the King of the Seelie Court. His presence commanded respect and attention, and his deep voice carried a sense of authority and warmth.}
{Oberon, raising his goblet high} Ladies and gentlefae, noble guests and cherished friends, on this blessed Yule night, we gather not only to celebrate the season but also to welcome the newest members of our fairy family.
{He turned his gaze toward Genevieve, Ash, and Elara, his expression filled with pride and affection.}
{Oberon, smiling} Genevieve and Ash, you have brought a precious gift into our realm, and we are truly honored to have you as part of our court. Elara, the light of your parents' love shines brightly, and your presence warms our hearts.
{He raised his goblet even higher, and the others followed suit.}
{Oberon, his voice filled with warmth} May this Yule Feast be a testament to the bonds that unite us all, transcending kingdoms and races. May love and harmony fill our hearts, and may the spirit of Yule bring us closer together.
{With a regal nod, he took a sip from his goblet, and the hall erupted in cheers and clinking of crystal, marking the beginning of a festive night filled with joy and unity.}
{Genevieve looking at Ash} Happy Yule Ash.
{Ash, his eyes filled with love and happiness, leaned in and kissed Genevieve softly.}
{Ash, whispering} Happy Yule, my dearest Genevieve. And to you, little Elara. This is the beginning of many Yules we'll celebrate together as a family.
{They shared a tender moment, surrounded by the warmth of their newfound family in Fairyland, as the Yule Feast continued and laughter and music filled the air. As the Yule Feast continued, the atmosphere in the hall was filled with merriment and delight. The long banquet tables were laden with sumptuous dishes that showcased the finest cuisine of Fairyland. Musicians played enchanting melodies that had everyone tapping their feet and swaying to the rhythm. Dancers twirled gracefully on the floor, their steps synchronized with the music, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. Throughout the evening, Genevieve, Ash, and Elara were welcomed with open arms by the other royalty of Fairyland. They exchanged stories, laughter, and goodwill, strengthening the bonds of friendship and unity. Elara, nestled in her mother's arms, seemed to revel in the festivities. Her bright blue eyes sparkled with wonder as she observed the colorful decorations and listened to the enchanting music.
Genevieve couldn't help but smile as she watched her daughter, feeling a profound sense of belonging and happiness. She looked at Ash, her eyes filled with love, and whispered softly.}
{Genevieve, whispering} This is our family, Ash. This is where we belong, and this is where we'll make a future filled with love and magic.
{Ash, his heart overflowing with gratitude and love, held Genevieve's hand and kissed it gently.}
{Ash, whispering} I couldn't have asked for a better Yule gift, my dearest Genevieve.}
{They shared another tender moment, surrounded by the magic of Yule, in a realm that had welcomed them with open arms and hearts. As the night continued, they danced, laughed, and celebrated, knowing that their love and family were the greatest gifts of all. As the Yule Feast drew to a close, the guests bid each other farewell with promises of future meetings and renewed alliances. The hall slowly emptied, but the warmth of the evening lingered in the hearts of all who had attended.
The soft glow of moonlight bathed the nursery as Genevieve, Ash, and Elara made their way back to the cozy haven. They put the sleepy Elara in her cradle nestled up, her tiny chest rising and falling in the peaceful rhythm of sleep. The room was filled with a sense of serenity and love as the young family gathered around their precious daughter. Genevieve and Ash exchanged a loving look, their hearts overflowing with tenderness for the little one who had brought so much light into their lives. They knew that their journey through Fairyland had brought them to this moment—a moment of unity, love, and boundless hope.
As they stood together, hand in hand, they silently made a wish for their family, a wish that Elara's life would be filled with magic, love, and endless possibilities. With a final gaze at their slumbering daughter, they left the nursery, their hearts intertwined in the enchanting tapestry of their own fairy tale. They made they way to their chambers. In their chambers, the warm glow of the hearthfire welcomed Genevieve and Ash, wrapping them in its comforting embrace. The room felt like a sanctuary, a place where their love could flourish and their dreams could take root. Ash gently pulled Genevieve into his arms, and they swayed to an unheard melody, their hearts beating in perfect harmony. The flickering flames cast dancing shadows on the walls, painting a tableau of their love and the journey they had embarked upon. Genevieve rested her head against Ash's chest, her fingers tracing circles on his back as they whispered promises of love and devotion. They knew that their path would not always be smooth, but together, they were invincible, ready to face any challenge that came their way.
In the soft embrace of the firelight, Genevieve and Ash found solace in each other's arms. Time seemed to stand still as they swayed, their bodies moving as one, attuned to the silent rhythm of their hearts. The world outside faded away, leaving only the two of them, cocooned in their love. As they whispered words of devotion, their promises hung in the air like sacred vows. They spoke of a future filled with adventures, of raising Elara, and of standing together against any adversity that might come their way. Their love was an unbreakable bond, a force that could conquer even the darkest of challenges. Outside, the snow continued to fall, blanketing the world in a soft, white silence. Inside, the flames flickered and danced, casting warm, golden hues on the walls. In each other's arms, Genevieve and Ash found their refuge, their sanctuary, and their eternal love story continued to unfold, one heartbeat at a time.}
{Ash} have enjoyed your first Yule love?
{Genevieve, smiling} Immensely, my dear. It was everything I hoped for and more, thanks to you and our precious Elara. This Yule will always hold a special place in my heart.
{Ash, gently caressing her cheek} And there will be many more to come, my love, each one more magical than the last.
{As the fire crackled and the world outside was cloaked in the quiet beauty of a Yule night, Genevieve and Ash celebrated not just the holiday but the love that had brought them together and the family they had created. They knew that their love story was just beginning, and with every passing moment, it grew stronger and more enchanting. And as the readers close the book, they leave behind the world of Genevieve, Ash, and Elara, a world filled with magic, love, and endless possibilities. The story of their Yule celebration, their reunion with Genevieve's family, and the bonds they formed with the kings and queens of Fairyland is a tale of wonder and enchantment, reminding us all that love and family are the true magic of the holiday season.
As we say goodbye to this magical story, we carry with us the warmth of their love, the joy of their celebrations, and the hope that in our own lives, we may find the same kind of enchantment and happiness that Genevieve and Ash discovered in each other's arms.

New Year's Eve plans canceled? Here are some fun ways to celebrate the holiday at home
New Year's Eve is right around the corner and soon we will be entering 2022.Feeling anxious about being in public places due to the omicron variant, had your plans canceled or just want to stay in and celebrate at home with your family and close friends? From board game competitions to eating "lucky" food, here's a list of fun things to do at home and still ring in the New Year.
This post contains links. Thank you so much for your support and for helping keep this blog running!
Throw a charcuterie/cocktail party
Invite over a close group of friends or family members to have a potluck dinner.
Everyone has to bring over their own version of a charcuterie board, but have fun with it. Sure, someone can bring over a board of cheese, crackers and olives, but suggest someone bring over an ice cream board or pizza board to make things more tasty. As well, advise your guests to also bring a pitcher of their favorite cocktail to share at the party.

New resolutions
Was your resolution at the beginning of 2021 to eat healthier, lose weight or get your body toned? Throw those out the window this new year.
Let's focus on a new resolution that will not have you struggling with food or your health. If you want to take an easy approach, perhaps promise yourself to read a new book every month or volunteer at a local agency to help our your community. Try not to start off the new year stressed out by picking a resolution that seems out of reach.

New Year's Eve TV specials
Let's end the year by relaxing on your couch watching some of television's New Year's Eve celebrations.
Of course, you can watch "Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest" on ABC, which is celebrating its 50th year, but there are two other specials to view.
lose out the year with some country's biggest artists by watching "New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash” on CBS. Not a country fan? Flip over to NBC to watch "Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party Hosted By Miley Cyrus and Pete Davidson." Produced by "Saturday Night Live's" Lorne Michaels, the lineup will include special guests and musical performances.
'Lucky' dinner
Wanting to start off 2022 with some extra luck? Have your last meal of this year be full of "lucky" foods.
You can munch on pork, black eyed peas, lentils or herring for prosperity in the new year. To attract wealth in 2022, eat collard greens, cornbread or sauerkraut. Enjoy noodles? Eat a bowl of soba noodles to bring longevity for the next year. Want next year to come full circle? Enjoy a donut as the clock strikes midnight. For true luck to be with you all of 2022, eat 12 grapes at once or a whole fish — head to tail.

Put together a scrapbook
Go out and buy scrapbook materials and put together your favorite moments of 2021. Have each person in your family be in charge of a page to make it more unique. Maybe have everyone pick their fondest memory from each month and have a page where everyone puts their favorite moment of the year. Make the whole book fit a theme such as black and gold, retro, fireworks or clocks.
Foreign traditions
Celebrating culture is a fun, interesting way to celebrate New Year's Eve this year.
Be like the Greeks and hang onions on your doorway. The smelly but delicious veggie is a symbol of rebirth and will promote growth throughout the new year.
In Denmark, when the clock strikes midnight people jump off chairs by "jumping into the new year." It's popular with the little ones and is supposed to bring good luck. Other traditions you can partake in are sprinkling salt on your doorstep to promote peace like those in Turkey do or be like the Armenians and bake bread for luck.

Make a time capsule
2021 has been an interesting year to say the least. What better way to commemorate this whirlwind than with a time capsule?
Gather some ticket stubs from movies or concerts you attended, a few photos and maybe a handwritten letter summarizing how 2021 went for you. Make it accessible for every family member by purchasing some mason jars so they each have their own capsule and can decorate as desired. If you don't want to dig up your backyard with a plethora of holes, place the jars in safe storage and revisit them next New Year's Eve.
Famous firework shows
Instead of waiting for fireworks to show up on your television screen around midnight, why not watch famous firework shows from years past?
YouTube will be your friend for this binge marathon. The better part? The shows don't have to be fixated just on celebrating New Year's Eve. Maybe you remember going to Walt Disney World as a child and want to relive seeing that firework show with your children. Additionally, you can view firework shows from past years from around the world. Just typing in "firework shows" on YouTube reveals a 33-minute firework festival from Japan.

Board game marathon
Let's end the year with fun and competition.
Starting at 6 p.m., gather everyone at home to start a board game marathon at the top of each hour until midnight. Depending on how many people are in your household, you might need to add or take away some board games. Play board games though that will not take longer than an hour, so Monopoly is definitely off the list. Caller-Times suggests Jenga, Uno, Battleship, Guess Who, Connect Four and Scrabble. Make it more interesting by adding rewards for the top player of each hour.

Last Line Tag Game
Thanks @dragonflylady77 💗
rules: post the last few lines from your current wip and tag as many people as you want.
~ Here’s the beginning of the next pocketverse chapter ~
.
