How Should You Train Your Dog?
Tumblr media
There are two common methods of training a dog.
The first is the aversive-based method. The second is the reward-based method. Aversive-based (discipline) training is when you use positive punishment and negative reinforcement techniques with your dog. Reward-based methods use rewards only for the behaviors that you want your dog to follow.
Aversive-based training uses techniques like loud, unpleasant noises, physical corrections, and harsh scolding to get your dog to act the way you want. On the other hand, reward-based training uses rewards whenever your dog does something you want it to do. Treats, belly rubs, or other dog-pleasing actions are used to reinforce that a behavior was good.
Different experts prefer one method over the other. The one that you use is completely up to you.
Some people believe that a rewards-based method sets up an "event sequence" for your dog where they associate you with happy feelings when they do what they're told. Aversive-based methods do just the opposite, where they fear you. That fear means that your dog does what they are told to avoid unpleasant feelings.

Why Are Dogs Scared Of Vacuums?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Vacuuming is an easy task. Well, if your dog is not afraid of them!  Have you ever questioned the reason behind your dog’s fear of the vacuum? Is it the movement of the furniture or is it the loud noise? It is commonly known that dogs and vacuums do not get along, but few of us really know why. First, they likely despise the noise. Other than when you’re really vacuuming, has your dog ever heard a vacuum sound? You probably only use the vacuum once or twice a week in a typical home. Therefore, our dogs do not have enough time to become accustomed to and comfortable with the equipment. It can get intimidating, noisy, large and appears to be attacking them.  When exposed to sounds they are unfamiliar with, dogs will experience sound phobia. Your dogs often enjoy running and barking at passing cars or other strange noises because of this. Due to our dog’s extremely sensitive hearing compared to our own, loud noises are much less pleasant.  The emotional responses eventually turn into learned behaviors, and even the sight of the vacuum can cause hyperarousal and barking. Next is the smell. Certain scents that the dog might not be accustomed to could be released into the air as the vacuum is moving back and forth over your carpet and floors. The dog may become nervous around the vacuum because it is easy enough for the vacuum to pick up trash and dust that may bother the dog.  While you may only be able to detect the scent of a freshly vacuumed living room, your dog will be able to detect dust and old particles that have long since settled under your couch.  Given how reliant they are on their keen sense of scent, it is understandable why dogs experience anxiety around vacuums. Lastly, it’s probably the suction. While the exact cause of this behavior is still unknown, some scientists think that the vacuum’s suction is comparable to how dogs react to scents. A dog typically uses its nose to investigate a new area or another animal. Since the vacuum is also “sniffing” like a dog, it’s an action that the dog would recognize. But because the suction is so strong compared to a straightforward dog sniff, the dog can regard this to be threatening.
Tumblr media
Can Your Dog Get Used To Vacuums? Your dog can be desensitized to the vacuum cleaner using various techniques. It may be worth trying to progressively expose them while also giving them praise and treats, depending on how severe their phobia is.  First, try turning the vacuum cleaner off and placing your dog in the same room as it. You’ll need to step it up gradually. Start by putting a treat on the vacuum and asking that your dog take it off. Then, move on to turning the vacuum on while your dog is in the room. While it may be irritating, keep in mind that this will take time and that punishing your dog will only make them feel worse. Source by Read the full article

Do you want to Improve A Dog's Intelligence And Behavior, Plus Easy Instructions For Training Obedience Commands - Most people know how to perform the Heimlich maneuver on a person or child, but many with pets at home aren’t aware that this can also be performed on a choking pet as well! Here’s how to help.
Be aware that while you may realize that you’re attempting to help your pet, your pet might see this as an attack on him/herself and attempt to defend themselves when they are already in distress. Remember to talk to your pet throughout the entire process in an effort to calm them with your voice. Keep your voice steady, if possible.
There are 4 steps you can try:
A. Head Facing downward like a wheelbarrow. Lift the dog by his rear legs to facilitate the object coming out.
B. Sweep from side to side in the animals mouth to dislodge the object.
C. Compress the abdomen by pushing upwards with your fist, much like the human Heimlich maneuver.
D. If the animals head is positioned downward a sharp blow between the shoulder blades will often dislodge an object. - High Quality Dog Training Course Featuring 21 Games To Improve A Dog's Intelligence & Behavior, Plus Easy Instructions For Training Obedience Commands

Dog Training and Routines
Tumblr media
Training and Routines
Most dogs thrive on having a routine. They like knowing when to expect activities such as mealtimes, walks, playtime, and more. It can also be a great help to establish a routine when trying to train a dog. Most dogs feel more secure when they can predict what is going to happen each day. The following ideas will show you how establishing a routine can benefit your dog training program.
Feeding
It's a good idea to give your dog or puppy its meals at the same time every day. Puppies usually eat several small meals over the course of the day, while adult dogs get one or two larger meals. Talk to your veterinarian to figure out the best type and portion of food for your dog.
The benefit of feeding a dog at the same time every day is that it makes it easier to predict when it'll need to relieve himself. This makes a big difference when you're trying to housebreak a dog.
Potty Time
Dogs should get outside to go relieve themselves at about the same time each day. Puppies need frequent potty breaks, while older dogs can hold it for longer periods. Keep this in mind when creating a schedule for your dog.
Putting this on a schedule will greatly enhance your housebreaking efforts. Dogs will be more likely to hold it if they can reliably predict when they'll get a chance go outside and relieve themselves.

How Do I Teach My Dog with Hand Signals?
Tumblr media
Hand signals are fun to teach and easy for most dogs to understand. All you need to get started with your dog are a few kibbles of food. There are several ways to teach your dog hand signals. Below, you will find one such method:
The first thing to do is to get your dog to associate a hand gesture with one of your command words; see below for tips on how you can link a specific motion to a specific command. From there, getting your dog to react to the hand signal alone is a matter of repetition.
Let’s assume that your dog already knows the association between a verbal command (“sit”) and the action you want him to perform (sitting). The next thing for you to do is to create a new association between an unfamiliar hand signal and the verbal command and action that he already knows. To get started, pair the verbal command with a hand signal (see below for examples of common hand signals). When the dog performs the correct action, immediately reinforce this behavior with a kibble. You will have to repeat this many times to ensure your dog understands the association.
While still using the food reward, gradually eliminate the verbal command. For a while you might use the verbal command and hand gesture together half the time and the hand gesture alone half the time.
Once your dog reliably reacts to the silent hand gesture when you have the food, gradually remove the piece of food from the equation. Soon your dog will sit, lie down or come with just a motion of your hand.
