What is Brake Fluid Made of?

Brake fluid is a critical component of any vehicle's braking system. It is responsible for transferring the force from the brake pedal to the brakes and providing a smooth, efficient braking experience. But what exactly is brake fluid made of?

Brake fluid is composed primarily of glycol-ether based fluids. These fluids are a combination of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol, along with corrosion inhibitors and other additives. The type of brake fluid used in a vehicle is determined by the manufacturer. Generally, it will either be a DOT 3, DOT 4, or DOT 5 type.

DOT 3 brake fluid is the most common type found in vehicle brake systems. It is composed of polyglycol-ether, which is a mixture of ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol. It is a hygroscopic fluid, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air, and can cause corrosion and reduce the boiling point of the fluid if not properly maintained.

DOT 4 brake fluid is also composed of polyglycol-ether, but it has a higher boiling point and is less hygroscopic than DOT 3. It is designed for vehicles with more demanding braking requirements, such as those found in race cars, or vehicles that operate in high-heat conditions.

Three weeks with Asuka. So far, so good. As impressed as I was with the car completely stock, she came alive with very simple modifications. The biggest drawback of the car are the OEM brakes and fluid. The pads are from a Toyota Prius and the fluid is DOT3. I ordered Gazoo Racing pads and some HKS DOT5.1 fluid. I cannot get enough of driving this car.

RAD Launches Pixomatic -- New Software Renderer

RAD has released Pixomatic, a new software renderer for games developed by Michael Abrash and Mike Sartain. According to the company, the features and peformance that Pixomatic delivers is "roughly equivalent to a DX6-class graphics accelerator (with a few more modern features like stencil and dot3 lighting)". Well aware that game developers try to leverage the power of graphics hardware -- not code around it -- RAD takes pains to explain the rationale behind the launch of its software renderer. The company touts the fact that it lets developers write one set of graphics code for many different PC graphics configurations and obviates concerns about buggy 3D drivers, misconfigured 3D APIs, and whether 3D hardware even exists on the client. Features:

Two-texture multitexture

Gouraud, specular, fog, alpha blending

16- and 24-bit z buffers

Stencil, bilinear filtering, texture transforms, and dot3 per-pixel lighting

Handles transformation, clipping, and projection of trilists, tristrips, trifans, quadlists, polygons, and pointsprites, drawn through begin/end primitives or indexed or non-indexed streams

Performs perspective-correct rasterization, with per-polygon mipmapping, subpixel and subtexel accuracy, and 32-bit color depth

The pixel-shading pipeline is optimized MMX code, compiled on the fly

Geometry and vertex-shading pipelines are MMX, SSE, and 3DNow optimized

SSE and 3DNow are automatically used if present, but are not required

RAD says it runs Quake II at 27 FPS on a Pentium III/733 and 60 FPS on a Pentium 4. Licensing the Pixomatic SDK for one PC game costs $10,000.

I really hope dialing in the drum shoes doesn't take all day, but I need my brake pedal to operate (more) correctly. Then I can flush the system with fresh DOT3 and the brakes should be good for quite a while.

Plan is to do this in a little bit, get some groceries, then relax with some bideo gaem.
