Thirty minutes and 9 paragraphs into an excited list of alternatives to Spotify's monopoly re: music, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, for weenies like me who are nervous about pirating, and my app crashes.

Well now I'm on a laptop and I swear to god if this crashes too I'm calling it a conspiracy.

LEGAL ALTERNATIVES TO SPOTIFY:

Music: There are virtually limitless options here. Buy music directly from the musicians/band! If they don't sell mp3s directly from their site, they almost certainly have CDs for sale, so buy those and rip the mp3s to your computer (if your computer doesn't have a CD slot, you can buy an external one for fairly cheap). Go to a new/used music store, they still exist!, and buy albums there. Buy old albums from ebay! Go to goodwill or other thrift stores and browse there collection of cast-off music for cheap, you never know what you'll find. Hell, browse their cheap vinyl if you prefer their sound and get a vinyl-to-MP3 conversion device if you like. They even have conversion devices for cassette tapes, if you find a treasure that was only ever released on tape. Once upon a time I would have said Bandcamp for MP3 or even physical albums (I once upon a time got an AUTOGRAPHED TO MY NAME CD of Lauren Ruth Ward's Well Hell album), but they recently union busted and a lot of artists pulled their stuff from them. I don't really know anything about 7Digital's business practices, but they are another seller of MP3 music, as well as MP4, FLAC, and WAV.

Music DEVICES: If you just want to manage everything on one device, your phone, get the free VLC app! It's open source and is absolutely wonderful. I only ever used it for music, but it's capable of much more than I realized, and it's open source and ad-free! And the audio files are tiny, even when I was running out of room on my sixteen gig old phone, I still had a substantial music library on it before before I got a dedicated music player.

Which brings me to my next point: MP3 PLAYERS STILL EXIST! I own two! My first one is a twenty-dollar SanDisk Clip Jam (an established and sturdy brand), my current is a thirty-dollar Phinistec Z6 (that just came out of nowhere it seems). Each have their pros and cons, and there are so so so many options out there. Some are smart, some don't even have wifi (neither of mine do). Some have expandable card slots for even more music. Some are extremely basic, some have a plethora of features. Some are cheap but still decent in sound, some are high-end for that true audiophile experience. Some have touch screens, some have buttons, some have no screens at all. Some only use wired earphones, some only use bluetooth, some (like the Z6) can use both! There are so many brands out there even in Twenty Twenty-four. Even the random brands cropping up online are some really good shit, and I bought both of mine used bc I have concerns about the lithium industry. Oh, and some are regular battery powered. And you don't need iTunes or anything, I just use the basic Windows Media Player to rip my CDs or put mp3s music on my player. In fact I've been avoiding Apple players because I'm worried they'd brick older devices, especially ones with wifi. But there are so many options out there, it's impossible to name them all.

Audiobooks: YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE AUDIBLE! Libro.fm has a similar business model (an optional subscription fee with a free credit every month, or the option to buy book without a subscription for a little bit extra price), and you can direct the profits to the indie bookseller of your choice! I have mine set to go to Baltimore's anarcho-feminist bookstore, Red Emma's. How to listen to the audiobooks you buy? Libro has an app you can listen to directly from! AND they have the option to directly download from the site (meaning no program you have to install) the book in non-proprietary mp3/mp4 files so you can listen to it on any device that can use those files! THAT INCLUDES MP3 PLAYERS! Almost every music player on the market now not only plays audiobooks, but has sections on the device specifically for them! Some, like the Clip Jam, are even proprietary audible-compatible if you still use or already have books there (check audible's site, and you'll have to go thru a registration process). I was listening to audiobooks on both my CJ and the Z6 (the Z6 doesn't have a section for them, but still played them), but I recently bought an e-ink/e-paper (meaning no backlit LED screen causing eye strain or insomnia) ereader, a Pocketbook Touch HD 3, and that is mp3/mp4 capable for audiobooks, and is easier to maneuver books with since it's meant for books. ALSO: the library apps Hoopla and Libby also have audiobooks you can listen to via phone or computer/browser, depending on your library's catalog. Some ereaders can even have the apps for them, and if they have audiocapabilities you can use the ereader for that too.

Podcasts: There are so many apps for this. I have Podcast Addict (I don't remember off the top of my head if it's on apple, I use android, but there are still so many apps). Literally I only had to sacrifice one podcast when I stopped using spotify, PodcastAddict has everything else I've ever listened to or want to listen to in the future. You can download them for offline use on your phone, and, you guessed it, MOST MP3 PLAYERS HAVE PODCAST SECTIONS TOO. MINE DO! There are still ads at the beginning and end, but I usually skip over them without care.

Video: This one is a bit trickier as YouTube is also a monopoly, but what I do is just watch yt on my phone's Firefox browser with UBlock Origins adblocker installed. Sometimes yt gets into a hissy fit with adblocker, but UBlock usually gets ahead pretty quickly thus far. And if in the periods Origins is losing, I just find something else to do. I'm sure someone else has recommendations for videos, they're just not a big part of my life right now.

Anyway, don't let the horrid beast that is spotify monopoloize the audio industry OR your time! There are options, and even if you're not a luddite like me that hates having everything on my smartphone bc I'm worried about privacy or companies yoinking their stuff off my devices via wifi (like Amazon did once with their copies of, of all things, Nineteen Eighty-four about a decade ago) at the whim of corporations. You HAVE OPTIONS! YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CONTROL YOUR MEDIA AND REJECT MONOPOLIES!

How do u like jellyfin? I've been using kodi since i've been looking for something more featured than VLC for browsing media but it feels bloated and makes wayyy to many internet connections automatically for me to really enjoy it or feel safe running it on any device that seeds torrents. I'm strongly considering jellyfin since I despise plex and ember is proprietary.

It’s the only media server software I’ve ever used, so I don’t have any points of comparison. Also, a transparency preface, the device my server is hosted on is an M1 Apple iMac that's running up-to-date macOS (as of the time of writing, that’s macOS Sonoma 14.1), so as always, your mileage could always vary on other operating systems and chipset architectures.

I also view content exclusively via the iOS app, Apple TV app, and Firefox for Linux x86-64, all of which I’ve never had a problem with.

For the most part, however, I haven’t had any complaints. I keep all of my content on a 2TB USB External HDD that I bought from Walmart. It stays plugged into the computer 24/7, and all I had to do was tell Jellyfin where the files were, which you have to do regardless of where they are.

I’m not an advanced user by any means. I’d love to get outside network support going, but even that is proving too intimidating for me. I probably don’t take advantage of most of the advanced features, either. From my experience with Jellyfin, though, it does what I wanted it to: allow me to view my videos and photos without having to download them onto my phone. I have three users set up (including the one mandatory admin profile), and that’s probably the most non-out-of-the-box thing I’ve done.

The only issue I’ve had is that if your host device loses power (or somehow force shutsdown or crashes without first properly quitting the Jellyfin app) during a library sync (which can take a long time if you’ve added a lot of data at once and are running it off an external HDD), the on-device database file seems to corrupt easily. When this database file gets corrupted, it makes the Jellyfin app panic and shutdown without actually closing the app. As a result, the app looks like it’s running properly, but when you try to access it from anywhere, it’ll fail to load. You have to check the .txt file logs to actually see the panic code and shutdown command. I’ve had that happen twice, and it isn’t very pleasant. Luckily, I also use macOS’s Time Machine feature, so I had plenty of backups. However, it is annoying to have to sort that out, and if you didn’t have backups, you’d basically have to restart the server from scratch. Your content would be fine, but all of your manual IMDb data, custom thumbnails, reported file locations, etc. would be factory reset.

Of course, if you’re running the server on something with a backup power supply or a built-in battery, that eliminates a lot of the risk. The iMac I run my server on also acts as a secondary computer, for me. So I'm also at a heightened risk of crashing and whatnot. If you had a dedicated server computer that did nothing but act as your Jellyfin server, that'd also probably help alleviate some risk.

The extent of my daily use of Jellyfin is constantly playing ambient music from an old iPad next to my stereo, and occasionally viewing images and videos from my phone or laptop. I’m certainly not a power user, but for me, I’ve never had any reason to dislike Jellyfin, so I don’t exactly have a desire to go looking for an alternative. It does what I need it to do, and it does it smoothly, simply, and reliably.

If you're looking for a more advanced user's opinion, however, I'm afraid you've come to the wrong blog.

it's been like a decade since I made a fan-DVD of a thing (something my teen pirate self used to do a lot for fun - and to preserve stuff I couldn't get in physical media legally - like anime that hadn't been brought over or shows whose soundtracks had to be mutilated for home release), and these days I'd want to make a blu-ray, and I don't have a blu-ray burner, so that's like... money I shouldn't spend.

But the idea of putting together a Complete Collection of Bee and Puppycat, with the original pilot, the original first season, the new Netflix remake, behind-the-scenes videos you can find from kickstarter and youtube, and maybe some fan videos (my fan Cardcaptor Sakura DVDs had so many AMVs as the "special features" lol) just sound really fun?

I don't even own a printer any more for making the box art and disc labels.

But, like the shows that I felt I had to make my own DVD versions of because the official release had to change the music or leave stuff out, even if Bee and Puppycat ever gets an official blu-ray set, given it's history I have a hard time believing it'll actually include everything.

This project has changed hands so many times and had such a messy production history, any official release is going to be incomplete.

Plus I used to love designing jackets and box art. That was the most fun part. Printing it out and putting it on the case. Making it look "real".

(And then inevitably seeing a fucking TYPO in your summary and being like GODDAMNIT but it's too much work to do over again so you leave it forever).

This isn't even a money saving thing at this point. Between needing the blank discs, the burner, the printer (I could probably borrow my mom's actually), the labels, the empty cases, (I think I might have software still that could make the menus and stuff, or there might be open source software, but I'd have to research and I might also end up needing to buy software)... I could spend over $200 without thinking about it, and I do not have $200. I do not have $20.

But it sounds funnnnnnnnn. And I would love looking at it on my shelf. Bee and Puppycat Blu Ray Collection. Ahhh. Goals.

I'll at least make sure to download high quality files of everything at some point soon and save them to my hard drive so I have them in case the streaming overlords decide to take it all away.

Finding A Specific Missing Announcer Voiceline from DDR: Mario Mix

I just went though unimaginable torment (spent 5 hours trying to do this) in order to obtain the following sound byte:

What you hear above is the voice of Londell "Taz" Hicks (I'm 90% certain of this) who was the announcer for several Dance Dance Revolution (DDR) games, both in the arcade games and games for console, particularly Max, Extreme, and SuperNOVA. Based on ear and the release timeframes, he is also the announcer in DDR: Mario Mix.

The above voiceline has been an inside joke in my friend group for more than a decade. It has tormented and taunted us every time we boot up the game. It comes up any time performance is in the question. Speeches, presentations, concerts, D&D games, everything. I wanted this sound byte for the purposes of psychological mayhem and figured I'd do some quick searching and have it downloaded in time to get groceries.

This isolated voiceline does not exist in any archive I could track down.

So, obviously, I figured I'd get it myself. That it would be easy. And, I'll be frank, despite all my struggles, it could've been so much worse if not for the hard work of media archivists before me. Here's how I was able to track this voiceline down:

Getting into Stepmania/ITGMania/Project Outfox necessitated that I know a thing or two about where to get simulation files for the game. In fact, I'd already gotten the simulation files for DDR: Mario Mix, which is what prompted the idea of finding the same announcer. The files only contain music, album art, and step data (the arrows in DDR), and not, reasonably, anything from the game. So I had to look elsewhere.

Stepmania has a large customization and creation community that makes themes, custom charts, and, most importantly for me, announcers. The first thing I did was figure out the most likely announcer for DDR: Mario Mix, then headed to the Stepmania archive and started downloading. I started sifting through the files, but all I could find was this voiceline from DDR Extreme2:

As you can tell, these may be the same words, but it is NOT the same voiceline. It isn't smug enough. It's too supportive. This will not cause the torment I desire. I started to despair. I trawled every single other game Taz had announced for and only found this same inflection. The smugness of DDR: Mario Mix eluded me.

The next thing I did was try to get them from the game itself. The Dolphin Emulator has a really cool feature that lets you extract the contents of "discs" (in this case, a mounted .ciso file). Once I had that, I started to sift through, praying that it wouldn't be embedded in an obscure bin file.

Instead, I found this, in a folder labelled "sound":

What the hell are these file formats.

Briefly, I gave up on trying to extract things from the disc and started looking in different archives. I found one archive of video game music, that had happened to back up all of DDR: Mario Mix, and it happened to include some sound effects in it! I was hopeful, but after clicking going through every unhelpfully-named file, I was out of luck. Why would an archive lack part of the game? Well I went to the forums tied to the archive and:

DID YOU REMOVE THE VOICE CLIPS I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR, 1425720626? DID YOU?!?!

Anyway. Searching this forum still provided me with some other options. Mainly, a post talking specifically about the msm and pdt files I was confused by before!

And this was figured out 11-12 years ago!! Remarkably, the download for the script still worked. So I loaded it up into VSCode, fixed some of the outdated code (specifically, had to change ord() calls to int(), some bytes stuff, I could ramble about this, but-), and ran it. This python code produced 465 dsp files. A dsp file is an older type of data sequence file that is common in older videogames and is used to play audio.

Since its on the older and obscure side, it's not something a native media player can play out of the box. The forum I've been searching through, it turns out, is actually part of a bigger website (hcs64) that has tools related to video game music archival, including audio ripping tools and, more importantly, a program that can play and convert dsp files called vgmstream.

I used the vgmstream web player to listen to a couple randomly chosen dsp files I had from the 465 I'd gotten from the python. Luckily, there was a small form of organization, and when I hit the files starting with 0003, I heard the sweet, sweet voice of Londell 'Taz' Hicks. And to my elation, the very second file I tested was the glorious, smug, tormenting words:

Everybody is watching you!

This is generally where you stop, because you've got the file now. But since I'm writing this primarily for my own archival purposes, there's a couple other steps I took after downloading the voiceline.

See, vgmstream converted the file to a wav file and I needed an mp3. This is actually easy enough. If you open up VLC (traffic cone video player) and go to Media>Convert/Save, you can convert it easily. I threw the file in there, made a new profile for the conversion settings, adjusted the bit rate to be the same as the wav file...then, instead of making the sample rate the maximum, like I should've done, I left it at the minimum and, uh...

What do you mean YouTube download scripts?

I love saving and storing media so I'm really curious since I just download videos individually

i use this on linux although it seems multiplatform, and i am by no means any sort of superuser linux nerd but i can run command line, uhh, commands... so after googling how to make a shell script because i forgot ten years ago, i wrote a simple shell script that runs the yt-dlp command for a few unlisted playlists (that i made for myself) with my desired settings (audio only, different encoding quality for music vs postcast/sleep, setting up filenames with datestamp and original video id code, etc)

that way whenever i'm browsing youtube on even the switch app or whatever, i can add a video i wanna download to a certain playlist and later run the scripts i have to just automate the whole process for me... although youtube seems to be fighting back with throttling, and with playlists over 1000 videos it can take a while to go through all the "file with this name already exists" results if the playlists aren't ordered reliably

i'm not aware of any gui frontends that support this fork (the older youtube downloader programs seem abandoned?) and i have no idea how it works on other platforms.... but if you're like, old enough to remember computers before smartphones, i reckon you could go from zero linux knowledge to having this set up in a few afternoons (i personally recommend lubuntu out of inertia, i hear mint is good too)

if you grew up with smartphones i have no idea where to suggest you start sorry, but don't trust closed source apps, malware can be injected into mp3s these days, get off my lawn etc

Here’s the short answers:

First: No, we will not be uploading any videos ourselves, copyright bots would flag nearly everything if we even attempted to try.

Second: We provide the playlists as a means to try and help people find the artists and songs we share and many can be found officially or unofficially online.

Third: Years of deep diving into the Japanese music scene and recommendations from others.

Fourth: You can usually find us at our home convention of Animazement, but we will always share on our social media pages which events we will be hosting Awesomely Bad at.

Now for the much long involved answer to all of this:

Not much to add to the first point, but copyright strikes on songs are a nuisance to deal with and Japanese entertainment companies are very big on their bots flagging their content when it appears in videos on places like Youtube.

Luckily a lot of labels have been doing better about making their artists' music and even music videos available for streaming online, Sony Music Japan no longer geolocking content a few years ago made a lot of videos available in high quality uploads on youtube. Some suggestions that may help you find certain videos may involve using an online translator and searching for the artists or the song title by its Japanese name. Another helpful thing for finding Japanese music videos is to include “PV” in the search. “PV” is short for “Promotional Video” and is the moniker used in Japan for music videos. Unfortunately this doesn’t mean that every music label has made their artists available and some older music labels, like EMI Japan, got absorbed into another company leaving a lot of older videos in possible rights limbo. Most older official uploads from before 2013 may only be available in lower quality uploads. Also plenty of music artists end up switching to a different music label over their careers as well. This is why you can’t find good uploads of most of the popular Kishidan or DJ Ozma’s videos we show officially online.Plenty of other videos have been uploaded by fans as well, but the video quality of these uploads varies a lot and more than not, the videos are usually poorly encoded video files that aren’t usable for the show. Other times you will find videos in decent quality, but they’ll also be hard encoded with karaoke style subtitles in a variety of languages on the video; this is also unusable for the show.

Believe it or not, there’s a lot more to Awesomely Bad than just downloading videos online and putting them on a screen for you all to enjoy. We also strive to try and find the best quality version of videos to show. Trust us, you would not enjoy 240p potato quality video blown up onto an HD Projector screen. This has led to your Awesomely Bad hosts over the years to acquire official home video releases of various music videos, usually issued on DVD with a CD single or put together with other music videos on DVD. These also can range in price from $20 to $60 before import shipping costs to obtain. Thinking about switching to Apple Mac… what do I need to know as a lifetime Microsoft Windows user?

So my fully spec’d out Dell XPS 15 9500 packed it in recently after almost 2 years of use (horrific, right? 😲) due to a Windows 11 BIOS update wiping my service tag and making my OS nearly non-functional. It will not let me reprogram the service tag through the BIOS settings so my £2, 500 laptop is now virtually useless since I cannot access the features of the OS within manufacturing mode. Instead of calling up Dell Support (warranty has expired - go figure 🙄) and getting it fixed or even getting it replaced, I’ve been considering switching to an Apple Mac. There’s a couple of reasons why I want to make the switch:

1. Quite frankly, the main reason is I just don’t want to deal with Microsoft Windows anymore. It’s just gotten so bad lately with the constant updates and “upgrades” to Windows 11 that I feel like any Windows PC/laptop I buy no matter how high-end it might be… Windows 11 will just ruin it. And downgrading the OS is going backwards. I don’t want to do that. I like the latest and should-be greatest. But there’s nothing great about Windows 11. Navigating around the OS itself is buggy and laggy as fuck because there’s so many problems that come with “upgrading” to Windows 11. And I know if I buy another Windows PC/laptop, the operating system will either be installed with Windows 11 out-of-the-box or Windows 10 will eventually force me to upgrade to Windows 11. I don’t want to deal. Yes, there will be things I’ll miss about using the Windows OS which are in my comfort zone… but at this point I’ll take the kicks for the ticks because there’s just too many restrictions/limitations as it is so it makes even the familiar and enjoyable parts of Windows frustrating and many of the Windows-only compatible programs/applications I love to use like Microsoft Word and Windows Media Player are bound to these restrictions/limitations. In a nut-shell: Windows is not user-friendly for me anymore. So making a switch is necessary for me.

2. Another reason is I own an iPhone 13 Pro Max so going into the Apple ecosystem should be a seamless transition as far as it’s compatibility with another Apple device goes (please let me know if this is not the case as I don’t know) and that will save me so much time and energy because working an iPhone with Windows is a hassle. It is not easy transferring back and forth from an Apple iPhone to Windows PC/laptop with Microsoft and Apple being rival companies since forever. Suffice to say, I did a system restore on my laptop about a month ago to try and fix some of the bugs Windows 11 has given it, so I’ve lost all my programs/applications and settings. Specifically my 200+ iTunes library playlists which would be massively time-consuming to recreate every single one over again when I could just plug in my iPhone to my laptop and easily transfer them to it. I do have my music, video, photo and document files backed-up to a Seagate external hard-drive, which is compatible with both Windows and Mac, so it’s not an issue for me that I cannot access my files on the laptop anymore due to it constantly being in manufacturing mode because I can still access them on my smart phone and my smart TV. All I would need the laptop for is to download, sync and upload those files to those other devices and to the internet. Plus I also own an external CD/DVD drive which is also compatible with both Windows and Mac just in case I want to do some more TV show ripping. I still have the 3 final seasons of Charmed to store on my external hard-drive and to eventually sync to my iPhone along with Xena and Buffy. Yes, I am that kind of person that likes my favourite TV shows on every device at once because I can’t stand streaming and projecting. It’s slow and a pain in my pocket. I’d rather just have all the video files on all my devices to watch and edit whenever and wherever. That is convenient for me.

3. I’ve been researching about Final Cut Pro because I’ve wanted to get back into video editing my favourite TV shows again and making gifs for them to upload to Tumblr. The way that Final Cut Pro functions so simplistically seems to be right up my alley because I’ve always found it a struggle learning the complicated process of working Adobe Premiere and Photoshop beyond the basics. So I feel like Final Cut Pro would be much more suitable to my needs as a video editor and gif maker and the improvements in speed and efficiency (Adobe programs are crash beasts) will certainly be a great deal more worth it than Premiere and Photoshop ever were to me. Plus - you buy Final Cut Pro once and you have it for always VS monthly payouts to Adobe to keep Premiere/Photoshop and you can do both video editing and gif making on Final Cut Pro so no need for 2 separate programs to do 2 different essentially similar things.

4. Mac’s are quick and quiet simultaneously. They use just as much processing power as a Windows PC/laptop does but the machine is practically silent no matter what you do with or on it. I can’t count how many times I’ve opened up my Dell XPS and just messed around in the OS without opening any programs/applications and the fans on it revved like they were in a monster truck rally. Then I would open internet tabs on websites that automatically played videos and gifs like Tumblr and it would start crashing and self-closing on the application or sometimes even shutting down the machine itself. It was getting beyond aggravating to keep using it when it’s power functionality just wasn’t up to what I paid for it. With a Mac, not only will the compatibility with my iPhone be unrestricted and unlimited straight away… but it will also be extremely quick and quiet straight away.

5. Safari VS Windows Explorer/Google Chrome/Mozilla Firefox or any other Windows-based internet browser is night and day difference. Using Safari on my iPhone is a breeze like the fucking wind. It is so fast and efficient and useful and attractive… it absolutely floors any other kind of internet browser I have ever used on it. Which makes me really excited for how it’s going to work on a Mac laptop. If it’s this great to use on an iPhone with an 8th the processing power of a Windows PC/laptop - then I’m sure it’s out of this world to use it on a Mac. Having a really great internet browser matters to me because I am on the internet for all sorts of reasons. Yes, I primarily use the official social media apps for interacting with social media but there are times when I want to use the browser-based version. The actual website. And trying to do that with Chrome or Firefox, or at the very least, Explorer… is horrendous. It is so slow, the tabs and bookmarks are messy, and things just don’t work the way I want them to work. Then I use Safari to do all of that on my iPhone and it’s fantastic. It keeps up with all the browsing I do on the internet no matter how many tabs or bookmarks I have open on it. It’s significantly better than Chrome which is my default browser on my laptop. That’s always been the speediest and most efficient internet browser to use on a Windows PC/laptop but it still doesn’t compare to the ease-of-use Safari gives me on my iPhone. Moving to Mac from Windows will give me Safari immediately. No need to download it. No need to do any updates (I’m guessing - please tell me if I’m wrong) and I really would love to use it on my laptop.

So given these are the reasons why I would want to make the switch from Microsoft to Apple and Windows to Mac… what do I need to know having only ever used the former before aside from with my iPhone? What will I miss? What won’t have a Mac OS replacement? Do the programs/applications and settings function so differently that I won’t get used to them at all? Please let me know what I need to consider before I buy and get rid of the trash I have.

Fans are grateful for the bootleg's influence on fan-made media (discussed further in this post), and can often find great comfort in returning to beloved shows on demand.

The bootleg trading community is alive and well on Tumblr, seen in posts like this (not exclusive to musical theatre), as well as respondents to this poll, who indicated that they personally archive their own bootleg libraries:

The other side of bootleg trading can also be seen here where a user asks if any fellow fans have access to a recording of Ride the Cyclone featuring a well-known actor (Taylor Louderman) who had only briefly been in the cast, making this bootleg rare. Rare bootlegs are coveted by collectors and fandom archivists, but the general fan population tend to gravitate toward the most popular bootlegs, often those which feature the most well-known cast (usually those who were on the cast album). Examples of these types of cast are "OBC" (Original Broadway Cast), "OOBC" (Original Off-Broadway Cast), and "West End," and it is these shows which circulate YouTube.

An anonymous Tumblr user sent this ask inquiring how most fans tend to save their bootlegs. According to the results of the poll cited above, YouTube is the most popular platform for bootleg consumption. However, it is also the least reliable, as these videos are prone to being removed under copyright law. Some users take to downloading these videos to a personal drive before they can be removed, though many casual viewers will simply wait until the "Slime Tutorial" is inevitably reuploaded under a slightly different title.

Bootleg videos contribute to fan culture in plenty of other ways, too. Most fan-made paratextual media is derived from bootlegs, especially in the form of GIFs and short videos/edits. These short forms draw more careful attention to the moments that they show, and are therefore helpful tools for fan analysis.

The Tumblr "gifset" is a post which often incorporates highly edited .GIF files which have been artfully arranged, though may sometimes feature one or two raw GIFs. These posts tend to highlight aspects such as a particular character dynamic, casting choices, or a favourite moment.

Similarly, short clips are excellent tools for archiving moments unique to a particular performance, such as this ad-lib in Beetlejuice, or this time that a line was altered in Heathers for one show, briefly canonizing the main character as bisexual (she is otherwise a straight woman, though her potential bisexuality is a popular fan theory). If no fan had been recording those performances, these fleeting moments of theatre could not have been immortalized. Therefore, it can be argued that despite their illegality, bootleg videos serve not only to record the production's entirety, but also to preserve the minutia of the actors' craft.

The sheer power of the internet has inadvertently spawned a new form of theatre patronage: the bootleg archivist. Although they contribute no money aside from the tickets that they bought to film, their contribution to the development of fan culture in the digital age is undeniable. Many fans cite bootlegs as their introduction to their most beloved shows, while others collect for the sake of cultural preservation. Regardless, this digital theatre community is one which has brought significant amounts of attention to the shows' names.

Why, then, is the musical fan community so looked down upon by theatre critics and executives? Is it fair to discredit fan-favourites, even if they become box office hits? What happens when fans influence a show's perception?
