27 for the kisses, msr!
27. Celebratory Kiss
Read on ao3
@today-in-fic
The year was 1994. Scully had only come over to his apartment to drop off his files. When she opened the door and saw Mulder in his Knicks jersey, she knew that he had called with this ulterior motive in mind. She didn’t want to stay for the game. She had little interest in basketball. And sitting on her coworker's sunken leather couch watching him get drunk and yell at a sports game was not her ideal picture of a night off.
Scully was still recovering from their trip to the Olympic National Forest. Quarantine had been isolating and exhausting. Her rash had finally cleared up but her energy levels were not quite there yet. A night just sitting around with Mulder didn’t sound all that energy draining, but she was worried if she stayed, she would be too tired to drive back home.
He had a mostly empty beer in his hand when the door swung open. His jeans were falling off his hips, courtesy of his quarantine, and his hair was already a mess from excitedly and nervously watching the start of the game.
“Scully, you're here!” He acted all surprised like he wasn’t the one to insist she deliver the important files he needed by tonight.
“Mulder,” She greeted him cordially with her ingrained skeptical tone. “I see these files are so important you’re even going to read them during game night.” She flapped the files against her hand like a detective in a drama movie. Scully loved the playful partnership they were starting to cultivate, she was having fun.
“Yes. In fact, they're so important I’m going to need you to come in and help me with them.” He tried to usher her in with the had that held his drink.
“Mulder,” she said in that tone, the same one she uses when he ropes her into all his wild goose chases and she’s realized what he’s done.
“Come on, I’ve got a cold beer for you. Or warm, I have a couple warm if you like it better that way.” Mulder rambled on about beer temperatures while he looked all around her and not directly at her. “I don’t know that about you Scully, do you prefer cold or warm beer?” He made eye contact when he asked his question, wanted to reach out and poke her to make sure she was paying attention to him.
Finding him curious and entertaining, Scully decided she could handle going in for the night. The longer she stood in his doorway, the more she longed to be inside with him.
“Sure,” she said. “Fine,” she relented. “Whatever,” she shrugged and beelined to the couch and cold beer.
Mulder smiled and closed the door behind her. He followed her to the couch, delighted that she wanted to be with him. Maybe wanted was a strong word, but she was becoming the only person he could trust. She was important to him.
“Who’s winning?” She squinted at the team names on the screen. The distance and quality were abysmal. He was probably going to explain the whole game to her anyway.
Mulder settled back on the couch mirroring Scully and they took swigs of their beers in unison. Mulder finished off his beer and began to give Scully the rundown on the intricacies of basketball and why this game was so important.
Three or four beers in, Scully was glad she stayed and Mulder was deliciously happy for once in his life. He noticed it more when she was around.
“FOUR- THREE- TWO- ONE!!! GAME OVER! KNICKS ARE GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS!!”
The TV announcer gave Mulder the best news about the Knicks since the previous year when their starting record was 7-0, beating their previous best season start at 5-0 in 1969. The Knicks hadn’t made it to the playoffs since 1973. He was just a kid when it happened, before Samantha had been abducted. Having Scully here to celebrate this moment with him felt a little more like home.
They both had been sitting on the edge of their seats, waiting to see if the game would end in victory. When it had, they jumped up and Mulder pulled her in for a celebratory kiss on the mouth. He held her face with his hands and made a loud smooching sound.
“Scully, we won!” He yelled into her face after smacking back his lips.
“Mulder!” She was breathy, a mix of excited, confused, and tipsy. It was a celebration, not a move to be pulled. He was already pointing back at the TV and draining the last of his beer. He flopped back to the couch and took a moment to sit in his glee.
“Thanks Scully. For coming in. Staying for the game. I had a lot of fun. Maybe you’re my lucky charm. I’ll have to entice you into watching more games with me. Maybe I’ll buy some tickets and take you to one. Who knows?”
Scully looked at her watch and decided she needed another hour at least before she could drive home.
“I can’t leave yet, Mulder. Tell me more about how Canada started this whole basketball thing.”
Mulder perked up and watched the glow of his fish tank behind her head while he explained it all to her.
“Well, in Canada, they had a closed net, as opposed to the open net in the U.S.- hence the name basket-ball. The evolution from basket to a net design happened because ball retrieval was hindering the speed of play…” Mulder left the TV on while he droned on about the history of basketball. He watched her eyes droop every now and again and would tap her shoulder and ask her if she wanted to hear more or go home. She ended up leaving before he could explain how trading players worked. Scully drove home with a strong feeling he’d follow up with his threat to buy her tickets to some sports game.

Can we talk about how Mulder got a call from Scully to come to the oncology ward at the hospital. Can we talk about how he must have been a little worried about her because the first thing he did when he got to her was ask her if she was okay. Can we talk about how he showed up WITH FLOWERS. And then made a joke about it to downplay the fact that he brought his partner a fucking BOUQUET in an ONCOLOGY WARD when he had no idea WHY she asked him to meet her there? Can we talk about how this was his first impulse in this situation, which for all intents and purposes probably looked like a Work Event™️ from his perspective until he saw the look on her face? Can we talk about the instant denial that something he couldn't fix had hurt her? Can we talk about how that reaction was immediately followed by a wall of faith that there was a solution out there, that the answer was out there, that the truth was out there to save her? Can we talk about the fear and self hatred behind the wall? Can we talk about the roses?

Squeeze is such an iconic episode. Not only does it gives us the memorable ''Do you think I'm spooky ?'' scene but it also gives us : Mulder in glasses, his horrible ties, Scully's impeccable fashion sense, Mulder being territorial over Scully, Scully realizing she loves her work and loves working with Mulder, Scully saying Mulder is a great agent, a creepy as fuck monster, Mulder's worst joke ever (''Somebody having a garage sale'') and Mulder's best joke ever (''Is there any way I can get it off my fingers quickly without betraying my cool exterior ?''), an emotional moment of an old man finally getting closure over his worst case ever, Scully roasting the hell out of Colton (''Then I can't wait `til you fall off and land on your ass''), Mulder thinking Scully got the right guy and fighting to make her realize, and finally the soft shoulder touch at the end.
Oh and also this shot of very platonic gazing between two coworkers

Prompt: "Who takes care of you?"
Set after "Our Town", before "Anasazi": Melissa shows up at her sister's apartment, demanding a few answers. (wc: 1,241)

Fictober Day 25: Another Banner Year
Scully opens the door after a series of frantic knocks. As soon as she does, Melissa barges into her apartment, her hair as furiously red as her face.
“Well, hello to you, too,” Scully says while her sister just stares at her with a wild look. The anger on her face is a familiar sight that reminds her of her childhood.
“Why didn’t you call me? You never call me.”
“What is this about?” she asks, closing the door finally. Melissa throws her coat on the couch, frustrated. She sighs heavily; the plight of a big sister.
“I always have to find out from Mom that you got hurt. Again.” Scully winces. Her sister wasn’t supposed to find out. Neither was her mother. Mulder insisted she get checked out, have her wound cleaned professionally, and talk to someone. She maintained that she was fine, but her trembling body betrayed her words and Mulder wouldn’t take no for an answer.
“Mom wasn’t supposed to know either if it’s any consolation. Mulder called her.”
“Your partner needs to do better.”
“It wasn’t his fault I got injured,” she says, feeling defensive. “It’s the job.”
“Oh, Dana,” Melissa says with a sigh, patting the empty space beside her on the couch. Scully follows the invitation reluctantly. “I know it’s not his fault. I meant he should have called me.”
“In case you haven’t noticed, Missy, I’m an adult and don’t need to tell anyone when I get hurt on the job.”
“Dana, we worry about you.”
“And I don’t want you to.”
“We love you,” Melissa says, a wistful expression on her face. “We will always worry about you. Especially after… it has been a difficult year, Dana.”
“Don’t I know it,” she mumbles, touching the newest cut on her forehead. “So if you’re here to yell at me for not calling you, then please, do it now so I can go back to bed.”
“It’s not why I’m here. I brought wine,” Melissa says with a wink. “I just wanted to see that my baby sister was fine.”
“I am fine,” she says, meaning it. She has to be. Melissa has a point she herself has been trying to ignore. This year has been more than a lot. But if she lets herself think about it too much, she will surely break. She refuses to let the shadowy figure of her nightmares and the Donnie Pfasters of the world take more from her than they already have.
She’s been beaten up, thrown around, and almost killed several times this year. There’s no telling how much Melissa knows about it. If she doesn’t mention any of it, maybe they can pretend none of it happened. It’s what she’s been trying to do for months. She needs to keep going. She needs to keep looking forward, not backward.
“Then get us wine glasses!” Melissa laughs, taking the bottle out from her bag, while Scully gets two glasses. She won’t be able to drink more than one because of the painkillers she’s been described but that won’t stop her from clinking glasses with her sister.
“We need to catch up on things,” Melissa says, pouring them each a glass of red wine. “How’s life going? I never see you anymore. What’s happening when you’re not getting hurt?”
“The job is demanding.” Scully takes a sip from the wine and closes her eyes. When has she last indulged? When has she last been home, just lounging around? Or read a book? “There’s nothing else going on.”
“I don’t believe you.” Melissa has already downed half her glass. “Who takes care of you, Dana?”
“I take care of myself.”
“Oh please.” Her sister rolls her eyes. “Are you serious?” Scully just nods, taking another sip from her wine. “You can’t be serious. With that partner of yours?” She feels the heat in her cheeks. “You’re blushing!” Of course, her sister can read her like an open book. “So tell me, Dana, how is he?”
“What do you mean?” She has a good idea what her sister is talking about but maybe she’s wrong.
“You know.” Melissa waggles her eyebrows. “I’ve seen you two together. Fox – sorry, Mulder – is so into you.” Scully feels like she’s traveled back to her teenage years, when they’d sit on Melissa’s bed, talking about boys while they listened to music so that their brothers couldn’t eavesdrop.
“He’s not into me,” she says. “We’re colleagues.” That word doesn’t do them justice at all. “We’re friends. We’re partners.” The more she talks, the hotter her cheeks get.
“You can be so blind, Dana. You need to trust me on this.”
“Have you consulted your Tarot cards?” Scully asks. That is what happened last time. She’d been 16 then and hung on her sister’s every word. Back then, the cards had promised that her crush – Roberto – was just as into her as she was into him. The cards had been very, very wrong and young Dana nursed a severe heartbreak, promising herself she’d never trust Melissa’s Tarot cards ever again.
“I don’t need my cards. I have eyes, Dana. And I’ve seen his aura. You two are perfect for each other.”
“Of course.” She chuckles.
“You don’t believe me, but just you wait. Have you really never done anything with him? Not even a kiss?” Her sister seems disappointed.
“No, we haven’t.” She tries her best not to sound too upset.
“I think I need to have a conversation with your Mulder.”
“He’s not “my” Mulder and no, you don’t. What about you? Instead of trying to fix my love life, you should focus on yours.”
“I have no complaints.” The gleam in Melissa’s eyes piques Scully’s interest.
“Who is he?” she asks.
“Her name is Monica.” Melissa glances at her, torn between bravado and reservation.
“I’m so happy for you, Missy,” Scully says, meaning every word. She puts a hand on her sister’s leg and she squeezes it.
“You’re the first one I’ve told. She’s amazing, Danes.” Scully has seen her sister in love plenty of times, but she knows that whatever her sister and Monica have together is something different entirely.
“You’re in love,” she says, not even trying to hide her smile. Melissa ducks, her lips breaking into a bright smile, and nods.
“That’s what I want for you too, Dana. You and Mulder… give it a try. You of all people should know how short life is. Who knows what’s going to happen tomorrow? Do you want to leave this earth without having kissed him? Hell, I was tempted to kiss him! He has beautiful lips, doesn’t he?”
“I’ve never noticed.” Melissa playfully hits her, laughing. “Fine, he has beautiful lips. And eyes. He’s cute, okay?”
“So?”
“So what?”
“You like him, Danes. I want to go on double dates with you. I think Fox and Monica would like each other. And I’m curious.”
“About what?” She takes another sip from her wine, feeling slightly dizzy already.
“I want to know how he kisses.”
“I wouldn’t tell you.”
“Oh, you would.” Melissa is grinning. “Promise me to at least think about it, okay? Watch how he looks at you, Dana. And we need to do this more often. I miss you.”
“I miss you, too. I want to meet Monica."
“You will. Soon. Now let's drink for tomorrow we may die." They spend the night talking and laughing, the way sisters do.

absolutely insane over the fact that when David and Gillian write/direct each other's characters, they portray them more as they were in the early seasons — David writes a softer, brighter Scully with that sweetness and vividness and realness she had early on (see: the shoe adjust in William), before everything got so heavy on her and she grew up so much more than she or anyone else expected of her; and in turn, Gillian's Mulder is more of the brash, boyishly intense and often aggravating idiot we first got to know (and who Scully first fell in love with) than what the character becomes later on. the first three seasons hold the purest, clearest distillation of who Mulder and Scully are, both individually and as a pair, and moreso than any other writers David and Gillian themselves seem to understand that and stay true to it.

Bits from Pusher that have taken up permanent residence in my mind:
Mulder brushing a piece of hair off Scully's cheek
"You and your pretty partner seem awfully close."
"Explain to me the scientific nature of 'The Whammy.'"
"Smile, Scully."
Scully taking Mulder's hand at the end of the episode.

i'm giffing the "do you think i'm spooky?" scene again and i'm still thinking about that anon who said that scene is sexually charged and for the life of me i do not see it. it's a tense moment but it's not sexual at all to me and it never occurred to me that others read it that way. i'm not saying it's wrong, because ddga have amazing chemistry- but i feel like that moment is so deeply pivotal to mulder and scully's relationship as friends and as partners that it's important to see it as such.
if you think back to the pilot, scully says she knows mulder by his reputation: spooky mulder. her job is to debunk mulder's work, and no matter how you feel about it within the context of the show mulder is right and the fbi/government is attempting to gaslight him or get in his way because they know he is smart enough to uncover the truth.
but the one thing that they have against him is his reputation as a crazy person with outlandish ideas. mulder is deeply aware of this, as we see in ftf where he says, "i'm an annoyance to my superiors, a joke to my peers. they call me spooky. spooky mulder, whose sister was abducted by aliens when he was just a kid and who now chases after little green men with a badge and a gun, shouting to the heavens or to anyone who will listen that the fix is in, that the sky is falling and when it hits it's gonna be the shit-storm of all time."
mulder knows his reputation, he knows why it exists and it obviously is something that hurts him. not only because samantha's disapperance was a traumatic event for him, but i think mulder is also just deeply lonely. he doesn't have any friends, his family is broken, and he knows he is constantly made fun of, or worse, looked down on and seen as unintelligent.
back again to the pilot, we see that moment in the rain where he is telling scully his theory and he turns around while saying "you don't believe me." and you can see that he's just so disappointed and so bereft and tired of being brushed off. but scully sees this and takes him seriously, even though she doesn't agree with him. the foundation of their relationship is respect, and for the first time in however long scully shows him some respect and human decency. and some affection, whether it's platonic or romantic or sexually charged or not. he feels scully that is different. because she is.
but in squeeze their partnership is still fresh. it's fragile. when all these friends of scully's show up, all these people who are everything mulder hates, the same people who walk all over him, it's a real make or break moment. so when he looks her dead in the face and says, "do you think i'm spooky?" what he is really asking is "are you like the rest of them? are you gonna make fun of me too?"
it's also about not being so afraid to look foolish that you ignore the truth and hurt victims, which scully comes to see in that episode as well.

Can we just take a minute to talk about Scully’s reaction to being treated as if she were Morris’ mistress. Knowing the backstory with Daniel, there’s definitely more of an uncomfortable déjà vu vibe than skepticism. This was season 6, I wonder if this is when GA came up with the idea for the Scully affair backstory in All Things?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
She gives some great uncomfortable looks in Part 2 as well but I couldn’t find the clips to make a gif.
