feel free to share your theories. The only alternative we personally buy into is that it’s about Scooter 😅
// Call me naive, but I've always thought the Ultracheese was A Certain Romance for the TBHC era. I'm not dismissing the fact that all of Alex's emotional turmoil at the time (including relationship issues with Taylor) likely fed into his feelings of alienation, but I think it's mostly about what it says on the tin. He's looking around and realizing that the thing that used to be the most important in his life, his friendships, has changed. (In early interviews he did actually rank his friendships higher than his music).
Is the Steinway and sons bit about sitting at the piano with Scooter? Could be, but what would it mean to be writing with a dog and a Tascam as your only company when you used to write with your friends? When half of them are across the ocean with families of their own, when you spot a photo of Andy on the wall. When all of TLSP went to record together without you after the EYCTE tour.
The last line, but I haven't stopped loving you once could definitely include Taylor as one of the people he's hurt and still cares about, and I do think his TBHC era performances of the Ultracheese drew on that situation and the raw emotions around the cheating and breakup.
But for me, the Ultracheese stands out as one of the most heartbreaking songs because it isn't about Alex's girlfriends, who have come and gone over the years. It's so much worse. It's the end of the band of brothers that was started with the first album, back when it was them against the world and they could do anything because they were together.
Whether it was actually true or just depression talking, going from what can I say I've known them for a long time, you just cannot get angry in the same way, you won't get me to go anywhere, to maybe I shouldn't ever have called that thing friendly at all is fucking devastating.
That said, I have no idea what he's doing playing Ultracheese now. I love the song and I'm glad we've got another recording from this era, but I don't think he's in the best shape emotionally and it feels sort of like he wants to indulge in beating himself up a bit a la Bourne Identity. Strange situation all round.
Goddamn, we feel like we should PAY you for that thesis. That was very well-articulated and I could totally see what you mean. It makes a lot of sense. And about him beating himself up now, that makes A LOT of sense to. Thanks for chiming in!!!!!
