‘The Greaze is an annual custom unique to Westminster School, held each Shrove Tuesday since at least the mid 1700s but in a tradition likely to be medieval. A school cook tosses a pancake over an iron bar and pupils scramble to retrieve what they can of the pancake. The pupil with the largest piece wins a guinea from the Dean of Westminster, who also grants the whole school an extra day’s holiday — the ‘Dean’s play’.
The Greaze is the most anticipated event in the School diary and is a popular spectator event, notably in 1919 when it was attended by King George V and Queen Mary, alongside their sons, the future Edward VIII and George VI.’

That aged less than well.
I picked up a few common-subject books (The 1936 Abdication of Edward VIII, and what came after) from the library a couple of weeks back, and after reading several non-fictions, started on the single example of fiction.
It's "To Catch A King", a thriller by Jack "The Eagle Has Landed" Higgins, and Hoo-Boy, the opening made me roll my eyes:
Tumblr media
The Higgins novel was first published in 1979.
The non-fiction books all came out much later.
"Much later" meant post-Charles / Diana / Camilla / Andy / Fergie / Harry / Meghan etc, and thus also meant "Much Less Deferential".
They used research material unavailable* when Higgins wrote his novel.
* That said, every single non-fiction writer commented about how many documents were Not Yet Available, or Lost, or Withheld, or Heavily Redacted, etcetera, etcetera.
Even without that excuse there's an unsavoury brown-nosing feel about the novel which seems very un-Higgins.
IMO, of course, and YMMV.
By contrast, one of the non-fiction books - this one by Andrew Lownie - was entitled "Traitor King". Make of that what you will.
Considering what came from the documents which WERE available, and wondering what might be in the ones kept out of reach - also WHY they're so out of reach - leaves me thinking there's a lot of "no smoke without fire" about the Duke of Windsor's doings before and during WW2.
And terms like "credit", "gallant", "honourable", even "gentleman" may be at best less than accurate, at worst completely false.
The show will, no doubt, go on.
Right now I'm turning attention to some novels from my TBR pile - including at long last a few "Redwall" titles - because after that other lot, fiction has a less dodgy flavour...

Is it true that the rumors that say, it was the queen mother who influenced Bertie so that Simpson would not get the HRH title??
and I honestly fully support the queen mother :)
Thanks for your message! From everything I have personally read (other folks in the fandom might have read differently to me - please comment if so!), it seems most likely that multiple members of the Royal Household collectively played a part in denying Wallis Simpson the HRH title. What I don't know is who had the *most* influence!
In 1939, a letter written by David (I should probably write Edward but I prefer using his informal/family name, just as Albert is always 'Bertie'!) to Lord Beaverbrook complains about a newspaper article that was written about himself and Simpson. He writes, '...the matter of withholding the title of Royal Highness from the Duchess is an insult which I as her husband and a member of the Royal Family have always resented far more deeply than she has...'
Tumblr media
He then continues: '...whatever may be the behaviour of Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth towards the Duchess, it would in no way affect any plans we might make for going to England.' This could suggest that both Queen Mary and The Queen Mother had jointly decided Simpson not worthy of the title and so helped push the the matter further with King George VI. Bertie then also further discussed the HRH situation with the prime minister at the time, Stanley Baldwin, and between them they agreed that the best way to go about the issue was to first deny David of his royal rank, but then to 'reinstate' it with new restrictions (which I presume also meant the ability to restrict the use of HRH to Simpson). However, I believe that even Bertie himself was unsure --or misinformed-- about the complexities of how titles, peerages, etc, were supposed to be acquired through the royal lineage... and so the denial of Wallis' title was considered, in some circles, to be incredibly discriminatory regardless of the reasons why it happened.
Tumblr media
In any case, David did eventually vow never to return to the UK if his wife was denied her title, and they stuck to their word and lived in exile for the rest of their lives.
Hope this helps --sort of!-- answer your question! And apologies for taking ages to reply - I'm very very slowly trying to go through a BIG pile of asks!
P.S. Totally by chance I seem to have posted this on the 86th anniversary of David & Wallis’ wedding day 😆

Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis have two "perfect" role models in the shape of two unlikely royals - who are themselves "spares to the spare."
The young royals, who could be considered the "spares" to future King, Prince George, the first born child of Prince Wiliam and Catherine, Princess of Wales, should look to Prince Edward, the new Duke of Edinburgh, and his wife Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, for how to go about their life as working royals.
Edward and Sophie have been hailed as the perfect role models for Charlotte and Louis due to their successful roles within the Royal Family.
The couple recently carried out a historic ceremony on behalf of King Charles III, marking 120 years of friendly relations between Britain and France.
Their rise to prominence has been a long time coming, according to former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond.
Jennie told OK!: "They thoroughly deserve the recognition they are now getting."
Tumblr media
She added that despite their work often being overshadowed by other royals, they have remained devoted to their causes.
As they take on more prominent roles, they are proving themselves up to the task and serving as excellent examples to their great nephews and niece.
xxx
It is a position which has notoriously come with question marks attached as the Royal struggles to carve out a life for themselves in the shadow of the crown.
Tumblr media
Jennie added:
"They [Edward and Sophie] have always been quietly devoted to their various causes, but their work has been overshadowed by other royals.
I suppose every cloud has a silver lining... and as the King calls on them to take a more prominent role, Edward and Sophie are showing they are very much up to the task.
"They are also serving as excellent role models to their great nephews and niece - showing that you can be a 'spare' or even a 'spare to the spare' and make a real success of working as a valued member of the Royal Family."
But among the many benefits of the Prince and Princess of Wales ' preference for gentle parenting directed by what Catherine has learned from her studies of early years education, it is clear that the couple will be striving to normalise their younger children's lives with the hope that they never feel like working as royals is their only option.
Tumblr media
"William and Catherine must be acutely aware of the problems for a royal spare," Jennie explains.
"They have already shown that they have a different and modern attitude to bringing up royal children.
I'm sure they will do everything to make Charlotte and Louis feel every bit as special, loved and valued as George.
I imagine they will encourage Louis to explore life outside the royal fold... it could be the military, but it could also be working in the charity world or whatever he finds appealing after his education is finished.
I'm sure they will encourage him to go to University, which they both enjoyed and where, of course, they found love.
Tumblr media
"And from there they will want him to find a life that is meaningful to him as well as appropriate for the son of a future King.
They will try to ensure that he feels he is living a life of value, irrespective of his place in the line of succession.
And that will probably involve service of some kind as they have emphasised from the start that they want their children to understand that having empathy with others is not only a kindness but is rewarding as well."
Edward and Sophie have seen their popularity and recognition within the Royal Family soar over the past 13 months, since being given new titles.
The pair are increasingly front and centre at crucial events, stepping in for the King while he prioritises his health recovery.
Tumblr media
Prince Edward is a trusted supporter of the arts sector, taking up his late father's Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme mantle.
Meanwhile, Sophie champions gender equality tirelessly, raising critical awareness around issues like female genital mutilation (FGM) and avoidable blindness prevention.
Away from participating in Royal duties or representational roles on behalf of the King, Edward and Sophie, along with their two children — Lady Louise Windsor and James, Earl of Wessex, 20 and 16 respectively — reside at Bagshot Park close to the Windsor Estate, whenever they're not away studying at university or school.
