Famitsu has an interview with the Enstars staff members who came up with the idea of Ensemble Training and it has a lot of fun information. Here are some things from the interview summarized:

It was an idea from the lead illustrator and graphic designer who at first talked about a dietary app featuring Knights but it later changed to exercise because they felt diet app was too complex and not easy to add a concept of working together to be more healthy to. The lead illustrator made a proposal of it and found other staff members who were interested in helping her. At some point there was also talk of adding some romancing aspect into the game but that was discarded. (Phew!!)

They talked about it in late 2020 but the work began in March 2022. Originally they wanted to release it with Butou-kai shuffle but it was not ready yet at that point. It also wasn't originally meant as April Fool's content but then they thought it'd get a lot of attention that way. And they were right! They got more downloads than they anticipated when the app launched.

Also, it was kept approachable to everyone not only by keeping it completely free (and it'll stay without any paid content they promised) but also making sure everyone could do the exercises. The staff members who came up with the idea aren't athletic, so they tested the exercises could be done by non-trained people. They had both a professional gym trainer and Enstars staff who did muscle training to help with planning the exercises and programmes.

And lolol, the reason the day in-app changes at 4 am is because many staff members are nightowls so daily reset at 12 midnight felt too tough. Haha, I feel you. (But wait, does that mean some of them are exercising in the middle of the night??)

They had been thinking it's boring and hard to stay motivated to do exercises if you just watch videos or have to go somewhere to exercise. And that you want to be praised and encouraged. So they wrote idols giving you a lot of positive feedback. And that's why for example Izumi who's usually quite rude, sounds kinder in the app. They wanted them to tell you you're doing a good job and give you little cheers during exercises (so no demon instructor Yuzuru dlc, sorry everyone). They also wrote the characters as they would be acting in interviews or promotional settings, so even those who do not normally speak very politely, are using more keigo. Kanata got specially edited lines because he talks so slow haha.

Also, they thought that maybe the voice actors would be a little bit confused about suddenly asked to be gym instructors, so they filmed an example video for the VAs to explain/show it since the game animation was still in progress. Awww!

The characters got more lines and animations than they originally planned. At first there was no instructors introducing themselves before exercises but as they created animations and lines for the four trainers (Ibara, Adonis, Izumi and Mitsuru), they thought it'd be fun to see the other characters animated and talking more too. Originally there would've just been the chibi character screen. I'm glad they decided to expand it! They were first warned that they can't have too many special animations but in the end they included all they asked for (for example Ibara's salute). And they put a lot of care into Wataru's ponytail animation!! <3

Such a passion project. I'm glad HappyEle supported their idea and let them make it into a real app. I'm again thinking that HappyEle/Cacalia CEO interview where he said he's letting the employees do what they love and want to do.

I played like 4 enstars songs today and this MV makes me go insane who fucking died

I would recognize that scene anywhere, the song is Noir Neige. It's from a shuffle unit (La Mort) and in the story they're filming a movie where they play as shinigamis (fun fact the film got nominated for the idol film festival in NYC in universe). I can send you a translation for the story if you ever want it (i wouldnt recommend it until you build a good foundation of Sakuma brothers lore though).

But anyway, yes, the plot follows 4 shinigamis living in a church in a village with a neverending winter. In order to bring spring, one young half shinigami, half human boy must die. The film itself focuses on the emerging friendship between one of the shinigamis (played by Rei) and the half human kid (played by Kohaku), as well as the pressure and conflicting feelings regarding his imminent death. It ponders the concepts of eternity and death itself. There were other subplots as well involving the other 3 shinigamis and their clashing views, honestly i would've loved having more chapters of just the movie alone, it was quite intriguing.

first round of shuffle units is complete! because i actually don’t have a life, i wrote an entire essay on my thoughts about each one. warning: i really did just ramble on and on. keep in mind that this is just my opinion, i’m probably objectively wrong in all honesty. i think that overall every single one of the shuffle units were a lot of fun and i hope we get more of them in the future! 

AtoZ: song is a 10/10 banger, it’s probably still my favorite of the shuffle unit songs. all the members of the unit are so much fun and bounce off well with each other. if i had one complaint it’s that the outfit doesn’t speak to me very much.

XXVeil: song is absolutely delightful to listen to, probably the third or fourth best. i think the concept is fun, i think that each member selected was a perfect choice. very solid all around.

Branco: song is definitely an acquired taste. i’m still flip-flopping on whether i really enjoy it or whether i find it grating and i think that tends to be the norm -- opinions on it get split down the middle. i think the concept is 100% perfect though, the winter frost fairies look is adorable on all four of these little guys. 

Ring.a.Bell: i’m so sorry but i sleep through this song every time. it’s definitely not my usual cup of tea (i actually don’t know why this song doesn’t speak to me, all the boys have such lovely voices). the same goes for the concept, even though i usually enjoy the bride aesthetic. i just think the outfits are a little too plain for a whole bridal theme. i would love to see happyele try the bridal theme again with slightly more creative/elaborate outfits.

Moonlight Disco: i know that’s not their unit name, it’s just always what i think of when this shuffle unit is mentioned. the song is iconic, i think just about everyone agrees. it is a lot of fun and each member of this unit is absolutely perfect, i would never want to switch them out for anyone else. i think that the shuffle theme is a *ton* of fun and not something i would expect from enstars, i really hope we get more unique concepts in the future. 

La Mort: song is a complete banger, i had it in my head for a solid week. each member of the unit is absolutely perfect, i couldn’t see any of them being removed from this shuffle. i also adore the concept, i love that there’s an extra bit of lore layered on top of our usual enstars lore, like a little bit of extra whipped cream on top. 

Puffy Bunny: oh i don’t know where to start with this one. i think that song is very interesting but it’s not something i would ever put into a playlist or listen to outside of the game. i think that boys in the unit are all very good vocalists but the song is definitely not to my taste. the concept is also not to my taste although they’re starting to convince me that hiiro and mika could pull off just about any look they’re given. 

Butou-Kai: according to the wiki, this is the shuffle name but my deepest apologies if i got it wrong i’m actually illiterate. i think that the song is pretty good, like very solid everyone has nice vocals. unfortunately this is just one of those concepts that would never, ever speak to me. i’m very very asexual i see one of these boys shirtless and my first instinct is you’re gonna get cold sweetie.

Blend+: i’m still sort of unsure about blend+ for a couple of different reasons. i think that the song is an absolute delight. it’s not the catchiest of the shuffle unit songs or the most creative but it’s still such a joy to listen to. i think that concept is adorable and cute and it suits a lot of the members really well (like koga?? what a surprise). i don’t know if it’s the other shuffle units coloring my opinion, but i think this shuffle might have been just too safe? there’s nothing bad about it, it’s just not as creative as some of the others we’ve gotten (no hate, it’s still so cute)

Flambé: there are so many things to say about flambé. i had a meltdown the day the concept was announced and then another one when the song was released, they’re both so good. the song is probably my second favorite of them all (might change the more i listen to it) and it has my absolute favorite concept. punk rock train conductors is just such an out there aesthetic but it really, really works. 

if you held me at gunpoint and asked me to pick my three favorites, it’d probably be flambé, la mort, and xxveil (it hurts my soul not to put atoz as one of my top three). i just love the creativity, the concept, the song. all three of them are so good!

i really hope that we get more really cool and creative shuffle events in the future, the first round definitely had some surprises. if you made it all the way to the bottom of my feature length dissertation hi! have a good day!

2. who did you first produce?

Ra*bits 💪 especially Tomoya, he's still the poster boy for enstars in my heart.. and once Music came out i went hard on producing Leo + ra*bits if i had dia left, but after a while i got lazy and now i just let the waves of gacha luck take me wherever..

4. what got you into enstars?

so i was already deep in idol game hell (think Love Live, idolmaster, tokyo 7th sisters...) when i first learned of enstars, some scouting videos piqued my interest and then i decided to learn more about the characters, and then i saw Tomoya and then Ra*bits and next thing i knew i had fallen into the rabbithole. fastforward to nowadays idolmaster and enstars are still pretty much the only things i think about. F

5. what's your favorite headcanon about the character you produce?

i went "hmmm" about this and realised that Nazuna doesn't actually have thick and short eyebrows a couple shades darker than his hair, i made that up, but i can't imagine his face any other way. in my head he has that kind of anime eyebrows that are just. really thick dots TT

6. how long have you been in the enstars fandom?

Seishounenyuugi, they were absolutely INSANE for this one. prayer circle for the new valk album to have another song written by ali project..

also! are you familiar with the concept of enstars shuffle units yet? if not basically they put 4-5 idols all from different units in a temporary unit to sing a song that matches the temp unit’s theme. theres 8 shuffle units i think but theyve only added 1 to engstars yet (the next one is coming up soon tho)

and the reason i mention this is because if you don’t mind listening to holiday music in february, i would like to recommend sweet sweet white song (by the branco shuffle) and have you been naughty or nice? (by the flambe shuffle) .these are the two (vaguely) christmas-themed shuffles and i just think it’s funny that their songs are still soooo incredibly different.. if you do decide to look for them please watch the sweet sweet white song mv first and then the have you been naughty or nice? mv immediately afterwards for maximum emotional whiplash

the MOMENT i saw how cutesy the first one was gonna be i already had an idea of what the next one would be like 😭

but it’s pretty impressive that they’re able to animate all of that choreography so well though, for so many songs and for so many sets of characters

i will not lie i do not have a plot for this one yet i just love vkei and i love mayoi so i had to mush these things together. howeverrrr i do think that koga would be a good second for this shuffle bc i think he's already familiar with the styles bc of undead and deadmanz, same w keito. also he and mayoi are in the same class so i have. some basis for interaction they arent strangers. somewhat. i think the dynamic could be nice like i think koga could help in somewhat giving mayoi a confidence boost bc i think despite the way that he would be kinda harsh at first i think he would admire her. bc mayoi's like. genuinely good at dancing singing in canon and it could give koga pointers ^-^ i think they could be friends :) mika and mayoi are also canonically friends now too iirc!! keito and ibara have the rivaling lecture groups but this aint about them

self-aware aus... not particularly??? i've heard of those from genshinblr but i've never considered it all that much??? still i feel like those kinds of things have a lot of potential tho, since they can go from rlly fluffy and cute (for example, the enstars characters glitching the game so u always get perfect combos or the characters u want coming home on ur first pull cuz they all want to hear ur excitement at seeing them...) to kinda... lowkey freaky (imagine the characters start calling u by ur real name after hearing someone say it while the app is open, despite it not being the name u inputted into the game... or, like, the dialogue choices begin to get more and more specific, esp towards u... like when they ask questions the answer choices are things u might have chosen for urself/or u write ur own answers and their responses are also hyperspecific....)

My UtaPri Concert Report

So today I saw the UtaPri Concert “Maji Love Live Kingdom” today and it was an interesting experience.  It was interesting in that it shows me sometimes why I need to NOT let people hype up something to me before I see it/play it (if we are talking about a game) because sometimes people overhype something to a point where there is NO WAY it can live up to the expectations that were put forth by a fandom. So let me get into this First off the fact that I am actually UP is a testament to the fact that I drank a lot of caffeine...and its event day in EnStars so I got that to look forward to at 2 AM! I left for the theater at about...8:40 (in the Morning) and got there at about 10:30 ,got my ticket and then went and got some popcorn and a drink to get ready to settle in...that took me a minute though because the Auditorium it was being shown in DIDN’T have a sign but to be fair they are also showing “Tokyo Ghoul S” this week so I can give that a pass...still confusing but I figured it out on my own after about 10 minutes! The next part I need to explain the seat configuration So in the theater there are like rows of seats and then space so people can walk.  I was in the first section where I came into the theater (Section D I think) and took my seat which was right near the stairs so I could walk out when I needed to.  For anyone that has anyone that is handicapped you will be happy to know that they have seats that are clearly marked for Handicapped patrons in each row...this doesn’t come into a factor with me but I thought I would point this out. The actual show started at about 11:02-05 and it went through some of the usual credits but when it actually started it was...”interesting” So the thing opens up and when it does they decide they are going to shoot it so that you can’t see the bottom half of the characters but you COULD see the footwear.  This is borderline dumb since we have seen the trailers by now so trying to conceal the identity of the characters (considering we already know the cast) is kind of “Eh” but we roll with it because when they do the actual “Roll Call” for the characters its at least clever enough that you go “Oh well that’s cool” and it can still get you kind of amped for it After the character intros this way (and it wouldn’t be the last) we see the train really head off to the Tokyo Dome for the big concert NOW...we are going to talk about the actual setlist but before that a little detour Do y’all remember the ‘”Feather in the Hand” and “Egoistic” events in Shining Live?  Yeah turns out that the events with Masa/Camus and Ran/Natsuki were pseudo spoilers for the movie...sigh! Now to talk about the actual show but really...there isn’t a lot to talk about and by that I mean this! For some reason ,when they did the set list, they made a conscious decision to NOT have the songs be played in full unless it was all the group songs which I found curious.  We already bought the shuffles so WHY would you have them do the “Abbreviated” versions?  It makes legitimately no sense because...I can play all the songs from the movie IN FULL and wasting $15 to hear a “Medley” of the shuffles is kind of dumb.  I think people need to really think about that and make a bit more of a stink about it because doing that makes it feel like its a rush job and the irony of that is that I don’t think we had any stages that were under 2 hours except MAYBE the first one ever.  The fact that they would make an Animated one shorter than a real one and at a real one they have an EVEN LONGER set list is kind of stupid in my opinion.  I came to see a concert and not people speedrunning songs You know what they took their time with though? THE MCs! Okay so to put this in perspective there was the MC that we have just about all seen the trailer for ,a series of MCs that dealt with each song (and I will tell you now:  When “Feather in the Hand” came up I legit checked out mentally) and then they did one after they did another medley of group songs Okay so I won’t gloss over this:  Here was the order that they did the two group medleys in (and I will tell you also the ones I liked the most in them) 1st Medley STARISH - Fantastic Prelude (I think that was the name of it right?  I played it in SL once) QUARTET NIGHT - World is Mine HEAVENS - GIRA SEVEN (This was legit my favorite of them all for this one) 2nd Medley HEAVENS - Secret Shangri-La QUARTET NIGHT - FLY TO THE FUTURE (This was my personal favorite of the three) STARISH - Ultra Blast Legitimately speaking:  These two medleys and the MCs were what took up the majority of the concert time.  I think I legit said this out loud in the theater “You know...if you didn’t have these long ass MCs you MIGHT be able to get more songs in...I hear HEAVENS had some singles not used” For almost all of the actual shuffle performances I audibly said “I don’t understand the concept they are going for here” I REALLY said this when Kira and Reiji did the motion where they were clawing at their arms...I had NO IDEA what the f**k that was all about Oh and I also said this during the MC for “Feather in the Hand” “F**k you Maeno” (Really I should have said “Camus” and not “Maeno” but I was still legit pissed at that trio) For reasons that still are lost on me they decided to replay things from Season 4 and especially one of HEAVENS’ lowest moments...not that any STARISH fan that was in that theater would have given a crystal s**t but they did and I was cluess as to why but then again I was still clueless why we had a long ass MC before the final song which was “Maji Love Kingdom”. I went in wanting to like this concert so much and I think if I get to see it again without trying to review it MAYBE I will like it more...still won’t be happy about the whole thing with the Eiji/Camus/Masa shuffle and between “Egoistic” and the one from Reiji/Ren/Kira those songs confused me greatly in concept and that is something I look for greatly when I have to watch a performance.  I can watch the Joker Trap one and get a better idea of what they were doing than damn near any of the MLKingdom ones Alright I have to give this highlight The first MC right:  We don’t get Camus calling us “Fools” BUT we do get something ELSE! When Reiji addressed the audience at one point he said “My Girls” AND “My Guys”!  The best part about that was Reiji made male members cheer louder when he said “My Guys” and it was awesome! Now...was this a “bad” experience for me?  No not really...just wasn’t what I was hoping for when you get a “concert” and instead of getting an experience where they are playing “full songs” it felt like a “Lighting Round” which made me wonder really “What did you do for 3 years?” I also have this issue with any of the groups calling the others rivals...STARISH and QN?  Okay that works but HEAVENS saying it is like SANADA in New Japan saying Okada was his...the difference there was in real life SANADA actually got a win and HEAVENS can’t buy one and have to lick STARISH’s boots from now to eternity...yeah that pisses me off! ANYWHO Go see this if you are dying to see a UtaPri concert Animated and if you are a STARISH or QN fan (and I am a definite QN fan) then you are in HEAVEN (Pardon the pun) If you are a HEAVENS fan...it almost felt like STARISH wants to have the door close on us so they don’t have to take the L on the way out...despite the fact that they DID lose in real life to HEAVENS in the Oricon but why sweat the details right?! Anywho you take care and I shall talk to you later

hot girl summer<3 bc this is my shuffle and i can do whatever i want this shuffle takes place after kaname wakes up, so one of the main parts of the shuffle unit is that himeru's dealing with the identity issues, also his birthday's int he summer and birthdays are their own level of identity crisis</3 soooo bc meru and naru are roomates she notices that himeru's been somewhat out of it and decides to try and lift his spirits by putting the two of them in a mermaid themed project!! similar to what mika did to her in her second year bc i love cheval live<3<3

rei center bc his specialty is jazz dance and i need to see him do it more. please god. anw i don’t want there to be any drama in this shuffle so the plots here is that they all have a listening party to a bunch of jazz cds that rei definitely has in his dorm room trust me he told me himself. i think kohaku would sound sooo good. i think the outfits would be suit adjacent but also i need 1920s flapper style dress on rei. for my mental health
