Is your life what you expected it would be five years ago?

More or less? I probably expected myself to be better functioning (I don't think I actually was more functional 5 years ago but I was certainly in much more denial about not being so) at this point, and I definitely did not expect my love life to take the direction it did (five years ago I still thought I was straight!) But I did expect to be getting a degree then, and I think I was already leaning pretty solidly towards maths as a subject.

....the global pandemic was a surprise.

Do you know what you want out of life?

Eh... no? I mean, I have some general idea of which directions I favour and which I don't, but not in any detail.

Alternatively I go hide out in a cabin in the mountains with my partner for the rest of my life. Is that a plan?

1: how would you describe your relationship with your parents?

Pretty positive, actually! I think we're much closer than the average parent/child bond because I'm an only child who had a lot of trouble bonding with peers so they ended up having to kind of... occupy the role of friend/confidante for me along with the parental role. My idea of "much closer" probably still seems distant on the surface because I'm very bad at giving or receiving affection in openly "warm" ways, but I trust them probably more than anyone else and am very grateful for them. There's still some tension there because of difficulty with communication on both sides, especially with my mom who can be very... critical in a way she doesn't realise hurts me (though I think she's starting to), and also tends to take things I say as criticism when they aren't meant as such. There's also the fact that they're the only people in my life who will/can keep pressing when I try to retreat completely from everyone, which may have led me to explode at them once or twice in a "leave me alone" way because I didn't know how to communicate that I absolutely couldn't handle people at the moment, and also may have increased my avoidant tendencies as I found more and more ways to, well, avoid them, when I needed to. (Also the fact that my mom has in the past snooped on things I asked her not to and still doesn't quite get why I'm so upset about it). But on the whole I'd say our relationship is pretty great.

2: when was the last time you cried?

Probably one of those "difficulty communicating with my parents" instances I just mentioned? They were quizzing me over why I wasn't doing better academically and I was trying to explain the whole "it's not even about how I approach the material, it's that my brain broke and wouldn't let me approach it at all" thing, except I don't even fully know how to explain that to myself. It got kind of heated and yell-y, but then my mom said something... idk, vaguely positive that indicated she believed me, or maybe I said "I know you think I'm just too stubborn/don't really want to try/something like that" and she reassured me she didn't think it, and I just... started crying.

Which is pretty typical of me honestly - I don't cry when I'm sad, I cry in arguments when someone turns it around and is unexpectedly nice.

6: how is your life different now from two years ago?

On one hand, I'm living alone now, and have far fewer friends (basically... no friends in the actual place I live, all my friends are from before I left for uni. I was scared I wouldn't be able to make new friends and... look where we are.) This has probably exacerbated my mental health issues somewhat. On the other I know more about myself? Like knowing they are issues and not just me generally sucking at being a person in some vague way. Which means I can do something about them. I've gotten a lot better at observing myself and actually noticing when something's a problem for me, and also at... communicating that. (Which also means I've gotten a lot more honest, because sometimes in the past I would lie to people because they demanded some explanation for why I fucked up and I had no idea, but now I feel like I can... at least take a vague stab at potential reasons.)

I'm also probably a lot more... subdued. Which has its downsides (see: failure to make friends, dashed hopes about future academic achievements) but also upsides (less arrogant, more patient), so it evens out I guess?
