i respect people who are like "its just a career fuck ur boss get paid ur job shouldn't be ur life ect" but unfortunately im in that small fraction of ppl who chose to pursue a career solely out of my passion for the field. and this is why academia desperately needs to be unionized

okay I spent all day making a comprehensive planning doc (housing, logistics stuff, budget, annotated list of jobs I’m applying to, some initial resume/cover letter stuff) and I feel sooooo much better. like one million times calmer and ready to move forward. @herstrionics was so right that just choosing a path and proceeding as if I was 100% going down that path was IMMENSELY clarifying—it helped me clear out space in my brain so I could think about what I wanted and whether the path was feasible for me. I also think that having an option C (the Bay Area) briefly thrown in there this weekend was weirdly helpful because it became apparent SO quickly that the Bay Area was NOT feasible, not even a little bit, and that gave me a different perspective on the other options. I have so much work to do still!!! my resume and cover letter templates need so much work for the admin jobs in particular (really I just need to read like 20 good examples so I can get more comfortable with the format). I also want to sink a solid week of work into building a professional website with a portfolio of teaching materials/projects, which is something I’ve been putting off doing for ages now. I still have ongoing work with students too, but it’s mostly relaxed grad school application coaching and a little bit of project wrap-up, so it should be easy to balance.

here’s an extremely rough timeline of the next four weeks:

this week: finish & post fest fic; gather and study a bunch of resumes/cover letters in my field; see if I can produce 2-3 different updated versions of my own resume; talk with AP, KC, and LP about career stuff; rec letter for AG; draft grad SOP prompts for ML; drive back to Austin this wknd

next week: cover letter week, baby. I know that if I sit down and think about this I can come up with a system for substituting and tailoring blocks of cover letter material that will enable me to spend less time on each individual letter. I can make this more efficient goddammit!! my goal is to have a cover letter draft for each of my four career tracks (CC faculty, higher ed admin, private school, educational nonprofit) by July 1 so that I can get feedback and begin submitting the next week.

first week of july: I may need to spend at least part of this week finishing cover letters or drafting equity statements esp for the teaching jobs, but hopefully I can submit for the admin job ones if I haven’t already! I also want to be gathering sample materials for a professional website. also ok to take a break and hang out with austin friends… I have time! enjoy the time!

second week of july: build website, maybe? and continue updating job list (possibly expanding this week to looking at ed tech/ed consulting or other roles that still feel loosely values-aligned). no idea if I’ll get interviews or how fast that’ll happen if so but also maybe do interview prep.

#inquiry #Anonymous #my hair so thick tho so containing it under wigs are an Ordeal #verm story: had a post-doc in my lab in undergrad meet me on the day i decided to go from orange to dark purple hair #'wow verm 2 for 2 days you have different hair color' he said as a joke #so on day three i pulled out a silver-blonde wig in approx the same length and hid the styling under my typical baseball cap #bc most of the people in my lab were not going to think 'WIG' legit had them 'oh wow 3 for 3 you're really committing to the bit verm' #esp the boys bc idk what's it with them and silver hair that has them going OOOOOOOOOOOOO #(in second year grad school i heard through the grapevine that most of the guys called me 'girl that looks like an x-men') #('and eats taco bell during lecture' which was when i learned that the whole class could see the distance learning classroom camera :|) #so after hours of hard work; machining shit; checking on samples; running the mechanical stress tests; cleaning up #everyone was basically tongue out dead and panting hard in the harsh summer heat #'ugh it's so hot' 'man i wish i brought a hat today too' (machining composites requires outside ventilation) #me 'yeah it's so hot even my hat won't help' and i pull the hat and wig off #my professor ran into the lab bc she thought shit caught fire from how loud everyone screamed #^i say boys bc the gender ratio in my major was... 28-3?? 20+ to 3 at least #there was more in the mechanical engr dept but it was usually guys that had the balls to ask to join labs in ug #gender disparity + mentality + ugh i don't wanna get into it #point is none of them need to blow dry their hair #and as a result they almost threw out a perfectly good table saw bc they thought it broke #and didn't realize to check the outlet for a 'reset' switch

1. What is the color of your hairbrush? it’s like a blueish/greenish color and has moana on it! i usually comb my hair so i bought that brush just bc it was moana themed a few years ago lol. i don’t use it often

Have you ever been to a professional sports event? yes, quite a lot actually! my mom is super into sports, so i grew up going to a handful of pro sports games - mlb, nba, and nhl. never nfl tho bc my mom said the price of tix wasn’t worth it LMAOOOO. also when the olympics are here in la in like 8 years i wouldn’t mind checking out some events here !!

7. What is the last thing you said out loud? i asked my roommate if she wanted me to close the door as i was leaving her room bc she was abt to hop on a zoom call

48. Favorite job you’ve ever had? honestly my job at my school’s mail center this past year was rly cool! my boss was so great and the other student workers were chill, so it was a nice environment and i enjoyed learning all these mail-related skills

49. How did you get your biggest scar? i have no scars ;))))

50. What did you do today that made someone else happy? i had my final appointment with my therapist from my school since i graduated, so i thanked him for working with me the past year and a half!
