@mcyt-yuri-week day 7: free day
Didn't know what to put here and I ended up making a swap au.
Hear we have Lady Gem, Guardian of the Overgrown, and the Wizard Katherine from the Crystal Cliffs.
Headcanons and ramblings under the cut:
Okay, I gotta be honest. I actually hate this trope in AU making. What do I mean by this? I hate AUs that's centered around shipping, even though I'm also guilty of this. And I'm always very particular when it comes to swap AUs.
But, this swap led me to swap the others and the idea of fWhip being the ruler of Rivendell was already funny to me. I have many ideas for this AU, especially since I have a lot of headcanons on world building from the OG version.
So let's start with,
Gem
Gem here is still twins with fWhip. Both of them are instead from the royal family of Rivendell with their mother being a fairy coming from the Overgrown.
Them being fraternal twins, one was more elven and the other was fae.
Originally, Gem was gonna inherit the throne of Rivendell. But, at age 14 when the council from the Overgrown were to choose their next guardian, the Spring chose her.
This led to a change on their father's line of succession and now fWhip was next in line.
This led to the two of them being educated separately for the rest of their teen years as future rulers.
As the Guardian of the Overgrown, Gem does her best to keep the nation free from conflict. Especially while being sandwiched by two nations of the Wither Rose Alliance.
Katherine
The Crystal Cliffs, a nation that was formerly autonomous to the Grimlands was the nation that Katherine was born and raised in.
She lived an average life being one of its citizen, yet a student of flora magic in the most prestigious academy in the nation.
But by age 16 she was approached by Gandalf, the immortal cat as the next Head Wizard. This surprised her but gave her a sense of responsibility for being chosen.
However, being the ruler of the Crystal Cliffs is not an easy task. Katherine tries everything in her power to avoid war for her people. But the nation being part of the notorious Wither Rose Alliance, proves this to be difficult.
So how did they got together?
A part of me wants it to happen earlier compared to the OG version where they got together after Gem got cured from corruption.
In this AU, they got together while they were looking for a cure for the corruption mid-Xornot arc.

Pearl the bard!
Tumblr media
Yay more Pearl!! As requested by @ilexdiapason (not on an ask tho-)! I was gonna draw her like. Actually fretting the guitar but. No. It was too hard. So enjoy Pearl just kinda holding the guitar. Also I think I made her left handed looking at it half an hour later, bc that's the way I play guitar so it's natural to me- Oh well! Also tagging @pearlthebard bc it is fanart of that character-

Right. That’s it. Pearl has got to do something drastic, and she’s got to do it now.
She has no idea how Scott - how Not-Smajor, because it’s not him, it’s not - how he managed to hit exactly on some of her worst memories and her least proud qualities, but she won’t be standing for it. He’s - look, obviously he’s trying to be a good guy, she can tell that... but he was so familiar, and she was so achingly ready to lean into it, and then he had to go and ruin it. Things were nice for a second there. He gave her an amethyst.
This damn amethyst. Pearl holds it up to the light, squinting at the sun-glare, twisting it back and forth and watching it refract bright facets on her hand. It’s small and incredibly pure. Would have made for a great spyglass.
Shame she’s got no copper, and she’s not planning on heading back to Pix’s any time soon. Not when he could still be there, or be returning. Who knows what that llama of his will want next. Nor does she have glass, or really know who’d sell it to her. There might be a village somewhere, maybe, where people buy? Or she could go home, and dig up some of the beach around her settlement?
No. Better to give up on the spyglass.
(Of course Pearl can’t have the one thing that she thought might come in useful. Of course she’s got to give up her dreams and her desires wherever she goes. Nothing lasts - not the beautiful, not the hopeful - nothing stays.)
Which leaves the question of what to do with it, because she can’t just leave it knocking and scratching around the bottom of her satchel forever or it’ll lose that purity, the smoothness and shininess it’s clearly prized for. Maybe she could sell it on - but she doesn’t want to undermine Scott’s business, not really.
... Not-Smajor’s business, that is.
A thought occurs to her. An awful, selfish thought, honestly. Pearl’s no stranger to selfishness, to thinking that she could - and ought to - have the things that she doesn’t deserve, but knowing that she’s guilty of it doesn’t make it any easier to shake the urge. And god, she wants to do this - to give herself this one selfish thing, knowing that it’s a fool’s errand, that she’ll never have what she really wants.
She pulls something else from the bag. A ribbon. Red, satiny, with faded bloodstains and frayed forked ends. The ribbon she’d been wearing around her arm in the game, to mark her lives when the rest of her was red from the beginning, and which had come with her to the new lands. A reminder of that final life she’d lost.
Just long enough to loop around the points of the amethyst and then knot around her neck.
It’s such a bad idea. She feels so, so shamefully comforted with it sat against her sternum.
Right. She’s gotta get out and she’s gotta get free, and she can’t do that if this stupid connection keeps leading Not-Smajor (it’s not him) exactly to her. There are not a lot of ways of getting yourself into a situation where you can’t be randomly encountered by another person, and far fewer where that specific person seems to have the unnatural talent for figuring out where you are without even meaning to do so.
There is one idea that Pearl comes up with on her journey west, though.
She’s going to do something drastic, because the alternative is letting herself get in too deep with someone who’s never going to be good for her, and she can’t have that. Better to lock herself away than end up hurt again.
(Cold, smooth crystal warms against her chest. Pearl tries her best not to think about it too hard.)

Katherine (and who she's not)
Been thinking abt eswap. (Which you should all go check out btw it's great <3) Been thinking about Katherine. you get this. congrats
Everything was confusing.
Katherine had known that from an early age, but it had never felt so pressing. She hadn’t needed to understand everything then; and it was often more fun when she didn’t. She didn’t need to know why they weren’t born with already formed wings; she didn’t need to know why didn’t need to know why the sunborns rarely left Dawn; she didn’t need to know when her parents would decide her fit to rule and start her coronation ceremony.
Now—well, she still wasn’t sure she needed to know, or even wanted to. But she almost felt like she needed to know.
She couldn’t understand why Shelby and Joey had decided to fight for her hand, she didn’t know what her friend Gem had been so worried about the last tome they’d had tea, and she had no idea what to do with the bard living on the other side of her mountain.
She wasn’t sure why Shelby and Joey had gone to such extremes—she couldn’t imagine why they’d thought they could win her affections that way, or why their affections were even aimed towards her in the first place.
She wasn’t even sure could understand the emotions behind it.
Katherine had grown up seeing the romance of her peers—giggling from afar while watching someone else’s date or having some friendly gossip about the newest relationship.
That had never been her, though. Never her on a date, or her having a crush on someone else.
She didn’t think it had to be her. She felt bad that it wasn’t—that Joey and Shelby had left heartbroken because of her.
Though, she shouldn’t be responsible for making them happy at the cost of her own joy—right? That’s not how that worked. Katherine was free to live her own life, and she didn’t have to shove aside her own wants for theirs.
She didn’t. She was sure of that. Mostly.
Besides, she had more important things to worry about. The new bard—Pearl, that was her name—seemed to have some sort of issue with Scott, their fights escalating and Scott seemingly refusing to give the poor lady any peace. Katherine wished she could help—she worried about Pearl running off alone, and how she seemed almost afraid of Scott. Or, maybe not that. Less afraid, more… wary. Cautious. Mistrustful.
Maybe one day Pearl would tell her why. Until then, she’d watch over Pearl’s home in the mountains. Perhaps she could tidy the place up for Pearl? But, then again, maybe that wasn’t a good idea. It might spook Pearl if she came home and found her place rearranged. Katherine could leave a note, though. And maybe something to eat? Pearl didn’t seem to have any farms or almost any source or food.
Katherine should check on Pearl when she got back. Maybe invite her over, ask how she was doing, see if she needed anything. She could disguise it as a picnic just in case Pearl got suspicious.
That would be fun! She’d love to go on a picnic with Pearl. The idea sparked a warmth in her chest that spread to her face, almost the way the sun shone on the lands. She clasped her hands together, already excitedly planning it. She could bring some of their best honey, perhaps some of Aunt Mary’s cinnamon bread, maybe even something she’d cooked herself…
Oh, she was getting off track wasn’t she? She should worry about the picnic when Pearl got back. She could do at least some planning, but it would have to wait. Pearl wasn’t the only concern on her mind.
She had to get some supplies and head back to Sanctuary. Gem was still unconscious, and it worried Katherine. Gem had been such a good friend to her, always there to chat when she needed to talk or rant. The visits always made her day, often turning a bad day into a good one, much the way the sun arrives to pierce through the night and bring life to the kingdom.
Katherine wouldn’t leave Gem alone like that.
If the problem wasn’t solved soon, she’d have to contact Joey. Katherine would prefer not to risk such a potion, but Joey could create intuitive solutions with potions, even if they didn’t always work the way she would have liked.
She really hoped Gem would wake up soon. Katherine couldn’t bear to think she might never see her friend’s bright eyes again, that she’d never hear Gem’s tinkling laugh.
She’d do whatever it took. Whoever she had to ask, whatever she had to give up, whichever place she had to go.
Oh, goodness. She was making herself sound frantic. It wasn’t that dramatic—she’d have done the same for Pearl if she’d been in the same situation, and she’d known Pearl for less time.
Because that was normal. That was what friendship was, after all!
And if it wasn’t, well, she wouldn’t know any differently, would she?

She’s spent a fair few nights in woods like these before. Admittedly, the circumstances are not so different now to what they were back then, if you account for the fact that the shoe’s on the other foot now. Before, Pearl would do anything if it gave her a chance to get closer to Scott. Now, well...
The night’s clear and warm, at least. That’s been the one saving grace of this whole journey so far - the trip south has made for a lot more warm nights than anything they get up in the Archipearlago. It’s a lovely beach, all shells and white sand, but goodness knows it’s not warm year-round like the jungle climate of Sanctuary or the blue-bright docks of the Eversea. Cogsmeade, too, is warm enough that the old black cloak-tent is serving her just fine through the evening.
These woods are big, though. The curse of the borderless world has returned in the form of a sprawling forest that feels as thick and heavy as a bad memory. It’s not like Pearl feels unsafe, per se, just... uncomfortable.
Not for the first time, she wishes she’d brought the dogs.
It’s a selfish wish and she knows it. Tallulah and Tito are nice, well-mannered things, and they wouldn’t have done well being dragged around a dozen different empires in Pearl’s attempt to keep herself away from Not-Smajor and whatever the heck he wants from her. (Ignoring the fact that her stupid mouth went and made the stupid choice to ask if they could start anew, because she’s been equal parts relief- and regret-filled since she said it, and she’s got no clue what she’ll do next time she’s unlucky enough to cross paths with him. Seriously - it’s like the universe is drawing them together or something. Which it’s not supposed to be doing. Not any more, at least.)
They’re lovely dogs, and she misses them, and she can’t wait to pick them back up again when all this is over, but -
Look. At the heart of it... they’re just not Tilly.
Tilly was fierce and scrappy and she never backed down from a challenge. Tilly bit Pearl more times than she could count, snapping at her fingers for the scraps of rotten flesh that were all that Pearl could scrounge out there in the wilderness. Tilly wrapped herself across Pearl’s chest at night and kept an ear to her doubled heartbeat, keeping her warm through the freeze of the loneliness and her soulmate’s best attempts to ice her out of things.
Tallulah and Tito are lovely, but their fur’s too shiny and their eyes too light to really compare to the memory of her old best friend. They’re not as skinny, don’t need to huddle at night to keep the shivers at bay; they don’t dig in the dirt when they’re bored of sitting around and get mud all built up in their paws. Their barks are never really angry, their swipes never really land. It’s like a replica, a photo-memory of the dog she used to love more than anybody else on that wretched server.
Of course, right now, Pearl’s got no dogs at all. They’re still in Gobland, with the best babysitter that money couldn’t buy. She hopes they’re treating Sausage well.
She hopes that, wherever her baby girl is, Tilly’s happy.
The night is warm, and though sleep does not come easy, Pearl finds some familiarity in the crowding of the trees on every side. There is no dog curled across her chest, but there is an uncaring wood to keep her hidden from her hauntings.
At least, if she’s alone, she’s got nobody to protect.

bard pearl is living in my brain . right now. i. i know you're not even considering the rift right now, and i absolutely don't mean to overwrite your lore, not even METNIONING whether you'd bring hermitcraft members in, but. i cannot stop thinking about.
what if someone remembers her when they come?
..by now pearl would be used to what it looks like when someone doesn't recognise her. hell, she's had more than enough time to (basically) (almost) (kind of) come to terms with it. she's not expecting scar to recognise her, or bdubs, or ren. (she barely holds herself back from attacking them, if she's honest; half muscle memory, half burning hatred. it's a miracle she doesn't see cleo, all things considered.)
and then grian looks over her, and she's SURE she sees his eyes fucking stutter. no, more than sure, she knows he fucking hesitates. knows that that gap before he says his name shouldn't be there. pearl wouldn't claim to know what recognition sounds like, but she knows a liar when she sees one.
and, look, she knows that not everything's quite right in her head anymore. knows that this paranoia and jumpiness isn't something that had been there all her life; knows that, honestly, logically, there is every chance she has made this up. but she can't.. god help her, she can't just sit down and take that! she can't lose the only hint she's had in months! hell, she'd been halfway to convincing herself it was all made up, and he's here and he won't give her any answers, and--
--and he knows! she knows he knows! everyone has glanced right over her and come on, pearl may be angry and careless and a hunter but she knows a liar when she sees one! and not that she even trusted grian, they weren't friends, or anything, but-- but they're not there anymore! they both know, and they're both here, and goddamnit even if they're not safe, pearl thinks by this point she's owed some fucking answers!
...just . okay. just take this as a fanfiction of bard pearl because . g o d wgFJDKS
(i hope this isn't weird to send you ! :"D but she's . MAN)
no its not weird! i appreciate you rotating her she needs the love honestly maybe if enough people say it then it'll finally beat itself into her brain that she DOES deserve affection
if she saw grian and he Knew. well she'd be angry first of all, as is her natural impulse. that she's spent all this time as a certified girlstruggler thinking it was all a fluke, that nobody else could possibly understand, except for maybe scott once he's had things explained to him... to see the same grian from the worst six weeks of her life come back and act like the glint of recognition in his eyes doesn't even exist... she'd be furious. he has no right to just come here and be HAPPY. didn't it MEAN something?
and it's different, okay, it's different with jimmy and joel, because the canary and the red menace are clearly new people now, if the height and the hair length didn't give them away. same with tango and scar and impulse and (she bites back all her screaming) cleo. they're here from the rift, sure, but they aren't the people she laughed at and hid from and ran swords through and swung axes at until they snapped like sticks.
grian CLEARLY is.
he won't approach her, is the worst part, certainly trying not to give up the power he holds over her, the knowledge of what was meant to happen when it ended (the mercy of forgetting kept back from her, because saint oli couldn't just grant her sweet release, he HAD to put her here instead). pearl hates when people hold things over her head.
so pearl will not approach grian either, and either he'll give in or she'll stand resolute in spiteful victory.
but every time their eyes meet while he's running around the empires... well, she'll wonder about it.
