Really wild how Paradox manages to create games that look so complex with a million different mechanics, but once you look past the convoluted UI you realize that all their games are actually just shallow map painting simulators. Even Crusader Kings, the game that's supposed to be a sort of medieval sims roleplaying your ruler is still all about building a big army and conquering everything around you. This is especially wild considering how shit and boring wars are in literally every one of their games. In every one of them you are either weaker than your enemy, in which case you just abuse the shitty AI to slowly kill them with attrition and win, or you are stronger and then you don't even have to fight because the enemy will just run away and let you siege all their castles/cities/planets. And somehow Paradox manages to absolutely dominate the grand strategy market.

wow i did not expect an austria game in eu4 to actually go well for me, however, somehow i managed to unite the HRE into one country, conquered spain and thanks to that took over their colonial nations, portugal fell under a PU with me at some point, the spanish declared a succession war when that happened, it was an easy win though, just took time.

I started out the game basically by just speedrunning getting a bohemian and austrian PU, then went for poland, while also doing diplomatic fuckery to spread the habsburgs. This led to a Swedish, Saxonian, Portugese and British PU eventually, saxony and the brits were a claim on throne war. did some conquering in poland to finish the mission that gets you a restoration of union CB on poland, it wasn't that helpful unfortunately, russia also took a lot of their lands. then after taking i think it was venice and Milan, i got the restoration of union CB on naples and did that as well :3

so there i was with 7 personal unions at once + some subjects from the HRE, the religious league war was pretty fast, catholicism won, i revoked some free cities to enforce the religion, and i was left with a HRE free from heresy, this in addition to the historical center of Prague and austrian national ideas made getting imperial authority easy, and soon enough i disallowed internal wars, making centralization of the empire even easier, yippee ;3

once i revoked the privilegia i declared a couple wars, the vassal swarm was amazing, first i took some provinces from the ottomans to finish an austrian mission that wanted me to get some serbian provinces, then spain, thanks to the way they choose how to declare wars (iirc they don't consider subjects of an overlord when declaring war on a subject of of said overlord, which gave them the amazing idea to start a colonialism war against Holland, which was my vassal, this called the entire HRE and my PUs into the war) It was fucking horrible. fighting countries that have colonial subjects is SO fucking exhausting, I've had your entire mainland occupied for >15 years and we're still only at ~40% war score because their fucking colonial subjects are untouched. horrible.

Anyways, I now own all of the HRE, most of france, all of the nordic countries, the british isles, iberia, hungary, bohemia, poland, half of Lithuania, all of Italy, morocco, 90% of the americas, australia and half of south africa.

monthly balance is at 4.5k, my manpower pool was into 3 or 4 million, I don't remember exactly, army limit was at 3 million, and navy limit at around 3k iirc, as of rn i only have 1k ships, and around 2.5m bitches in the army, and i have 155 absolutism

Final Fantasy VIII -- "Eyes on Me" by Faye Wong

I was never the biggest fan of FFVIII really, but this song always stuck with me and has only come to mean more years down the line as it became a staple part of my karaoke repetoire whilst living in Japan. I was able to sing it with old friends when they visited Japan, friends who also played the game when we were both in high school. I tried to sing it one last time in the days before leaving Japan last year, but I couldn't.

Final Fantasy IX -- "Crossing Those Hills"

Like a balm for the soul, I can't imagine a more relaxing theme than this one. It's so peaceful and gentle, puts me at ease and fills me with nostalgic wonder. Especially when it isn't interrupted by random battles.

21. Favorite theme from a strategy game?

Europa Universalis IV -- "Alba"

It was always going to be something from EUIV for me, as there are no other strategy games I've put 400+ hours into. There are some great songs in there, like "My Kingdom", but it almost feels my duty as a Scotsman to choose this one. It also helps that it's a tremendous rousing anthem, and perfectly suits the feeling of marching your soldiers over the English border to crush the Sassenachs.

Spitballing a Fire Emblem Jugdral mod for a Paradox Grand Strategy game + Some Alt History Ideas

This idea originally started off as thinking about a Europa Universalis 4 mod since that's the only paradox game I've played, but thinking about it later, Crusader Kings is almost certainly a better choice. I just don't know the mechanics as well so what follows is mostly alt history ideas with some EU4 mechanics that I think exist in some capacity in CK. The primary religion of most of Jugdral would be something resembling either the way different Islamic Schools work in EU4, or like Hinduism with every nation being locked into choosing patron Deities representing the founding Dragon of that country. Cult of Loptyr would exist in a few scattered provinces.

Grannvale would probably be something resembling the HRE, with Belhalla as The Emperor. Their heir dies at war with Isaach, and a regency council is implemented for Belhalla given Azmur is too sick to rule. This council would comprise of Reptor, Lombard, Arvis, Ring, Byron, Claud.

Chalphy would have a unique mission tree and events to subjugate surrounding territories and incorporate them into the Empire's territory, and Sigurd would be heir for the earlygame, with insane general stats. Event would fire giving him Consort Deidre of unknown Dynasty. Verdane probably has razing mechanics so Horde-esque government. Agustria probably has Eastern tech or some kind of boost to cav to infantry ratio. Artillery probably get represented by Mages depending on tech group and Archers (which are worse) are what you get if you don't have the right tech.

If Sigurd succeeds in subjugating Agustria, a event will fire with most members of Grannvale declaring a coalition war on Chalphy, Silesse will ally Chalphy but be having a pretender war rebel problem that has to be sorted out first.

Winning that war triggers the event where Arvis assassinates Sigurd and Revokes the Privilegia. Gen 2 then follows as you'd expect with state religion being changed to Cult of Loptyr for the Empire, and this leading to a revolution with Seliph at the head of it.

But, more interesting than this is the potential for alt history. What if Sigurd dies early?

Well, presumably, Grannvale descends into a Civil War. If Veltholmer comes out on top, the same broad plot will unfold, Arvis will just have to finish the subjugation missions himself before Gen 2 can fire.

If another Grannvale Duke wins, then we'll assume Julius has been born already and Manfroy takes him away. Manfroy can then start his own revolution with Julius at the head, and Julius himself would not be Literally Just Loptyr at this point, so he'd take a similar role to Seliph. There might be some kind of event chain that could be used to delay him falling to Loptyr possession, because it could get pretty interesting if he hasn't consolidated power yet but changes state religion to the Cult, you could get another internal conflict, possibly between him and Julia (religious league war).
