Assassin Chapter One
Pairings: (eventual) Mad King x Reader
Word count: 4012
Summary: You and your stepsisters Lindsay and Meg are Assassins trained by their mother Madame Sorola. And you guys have a nice little system going people who need help come into the dress shop that your stepmother owns and hire one of the three of you. That is until one day someone comes into the shop and offers up a job that ends up fucking everything up.
It was late in the evening and the marketplace of Achievement City was all but abandoned except for a few people still milling around the area with no real intention of buying anything. A hooded figure was currently making their way through the marketplace their head down, shoulders hunched forward as they all but ran down the street. Some people gave the figure a weird look but they mainly ignored them. The person paused at an alleyway looking over their shoulder eyes dancing rapidly over the area before they stepped into the alleyway. The alley connected the main street of Achievement City to the marketplace and it was the only way to get to the main street from the marketplace.
They paused at the end of the long alley worrying their bottom lip as they scanned the street, it was a lot busier than the marketplace. Several people were walking up and down the street coming in and out of shops that were going to start closing any minute now. Reaching up they tugged their hood further over their face before stepping out onto the street. People who had been walking past stopped and took one look at the figure before hurrying on their way a cloaked figure in the middle of Achievement city was never a good thing not with the current Mad King. The figure stood there looking around at the shops before finding the one that they were looking for.
~(Y/N)’s P.O.V~
You hummed softly to yourself as you swept the floor of the dress shop that your stepmother owned.
“Hey (Y/N) do you know where the purple fabric is?” Lindsay asked as stuck her head through the curtain that leads to one of the workrooms out back and you glanced up at her.
“Yeah, bottom drawer of the leftmost stack over there.” You told her as you motioned towards the wall directly across from the counter at the stacks of drawers. Lindsay gave you a thankful smile as she walked out from the curtain and to the wall that she motioned to.
“Thanks, Meg suddenly decided that the new disguise she’s making needed to have purple in it in some fashion, and I checked outback but for the life of me I couldn’t find it, I thought I was going crazy,” Lindsay told you and you chuckled bending down to sweeping the dirt into the dustpan.
“Oh yeah no I switched around all the inventory around because the seasons changed and when the seasons changed so don’t the fashions so I moved what I knew would be most wanted by the public, purple’s up here because it’s also party season and anyone who wants to attend a party will want to do it in purple.” You said as you dumped the dirt in the trashcan and leaned the broom against the wall behind the counter.
“Oh, that’s smart, that’ll save us time later. When did you do it?” Lindsay asked.
“When you and Meg left to go get more fabric the store got slow and I got bored so I went around doing that.” You shrugged as you walked over to her intending to walk into the workroom with her when the bell above the door rang. The two of you stopped talking and look over at the doo as a cloaked figure rushed in nearly slamming the door closed behind them. You both shared a look at that but didn’t say anything for a second letting them get there barring before you spoke up.
“Good evening ma’am how can we help you?” You asked still standing by Lindsay. The figure jumped slightly their head whipping up to look at you and Lindsay staring at the two of you for a bit before reaching up and pulling the hood of their cloak down. You sucked in a sharp breath at the sight of the woman’s face. She looked like she had just gotten out of a bar fight. Her right eye was almost swollen shut, her upper lip was busted and her nose was broken, and she had nasty finger-shaped bruises on her neck.
“I’m...I’m looking...I’m looking for Madame Sorola.” The woman stammered out her good eye darting around the room, jumping at every little sound. You gave her a sympathetic look before schooling your expression back into a more professional one. You could already tell what she was here for.
“I’ll go get her, may I ask who is calling for her?” You asked. The woman was silent for a bit her eyes darting around the store again before she answered.
“Ashley… my name is Ashley.” She stated and you nodded glancing at Lindsay before walking away and through the curtain behind the counter which leads to your stepmother’s office. Your stepmother was currently sitting at the table going through paperwork, she looked up when you walked through the curtain an eyebrow raised. You walked up to her desk before saying anything.
“There’s a woman named Ashley here to see you and she does not look good.” You spoke in a hushed tone and her brow furrowed in worry as she set down her paperwork.
“Do you know what she wants?” She asked already moving to stand to go talk to the woman.
“No, but if I had to guess it has something to do with what’s happened.” You told her and she nodded walking t0 the curtain and you followed her out.
“Hello Ashley, I’m Madame Sorola, I was told that you were looking for me.” Her voice was kind as she spoke to Ashley. Ashley glanced at you and Lindsay before nodding her head shifting nervously.
“Yes. Can we speak somewhere more private?” Ashley asked looking pointedly at you and Lindsay. You and Lindsay shared another look but didn’t say anything just pretended that you hadn’t noticed. You turned to the register and Lindsay opened the drawer she had gotten the purple fabric from and pretended that she was organizing it.
“Yes, my office. Girls if you could please close up the shop that would be lovely.” Your stepmother said as she turned and walked into her office. Ashley followed her after a moment of hesitation. Once they had walked through the curtain you waited a couple of seconds before sharing a look with Lindsay before the two of you sprang into action. Lindsay grabbed the role of fabric she had put away before hurrying into the workroom while you quickly locked the door and flipped the sign over so it said closed before going about back to the workroom as well.
“What took you so long?” Meg asked taking the role of fabric from Lindsay and setting it down on the table next to her before she went back to pinning the fabric she had draped across the mannequin. You rolled your eyes at how Meg had completely gotten lost in the zone while pinning.
“A woman came in and wanted to talk to mom,” Lindsay said as she jumped up and sat on the table next to Meg and you took a nearby stool.
“Really what about?” Meg looking up from what she was making, now interested in what was going on.
“Well, she looks like she just got out of a bar fight one of her eyes is swollen and her nose is broken so I would assume it has something to do with that.” You told her as you looked at the maid disguise that Meg was making and so far, it was coming along nicely though you couldn’t figure about where the purple was going to go but hey Meg usually found a way to make it work.
“Oh, Jesus.” Meg breathed out her eyes widening slightly. “That bad?” She asked and you nodded.
“Yep, my guess it was her husband,” Lindsay said leaning back on her hands, crossing one leg over the other.
“Could have been her boyfriend.” You countered and Lindsay shrugged and nodded in agreement. Meg returned back to her work half paying attention to the conversation at hand.
“Well, either way, she must be incredibly done with whoever it was to be coming here,” Meg stated pinning the fabric.
“That is true,” Lindsay said as she handed Meg a strip of white fabric that she pointed at.
“I just hope I’m the one to kill the asshole.” You muttered as you stood up from the stool and both of them nodded in agreement.
“Well, I’m going to go finish closing up the store if you guys need anything to let me know.” You said as you walked out of the room.
“Will do!” Lindsay called after you.
Walking behind the counter you picked up a clipboard and pencil before moving to the shelves that displayed squares of different fabrics and there were a few squares that had different types of embroidery stitched into them. Looking over the fabrics you wrote down each one and then how much of the fabric was left already starting to prepare the next trip to the market to get more fabric.
“Thank Madame Sorola. Thank you so much, you have no idea how much you are helping me.”  Ashley said as her and your stepmother walked out of the backroom. You kept taking inventory as the two of them walked to the door, though you were paying more attention to them than to actually taking inventory. Looking up at the fabrics you looked out of the corner of your eye to see Lindsay and Meg peering out from the curtain and the three of you shared a look before you went back to pretending that you were taking inventory.
“You’re welcome Ashley, I’m always happy to help someone in need. Just make sure that you’ll be able to pay I’ll need the money by the end of the month, that’s three weeks.” Madame Sorola stated and Ashley nodded her head.
“Yes, yes, of course. You’ll have your money. I swear to you thank you so much.” Ashley said as they stood in front of the door. Looking over you noticed that Ashley was far less jumpy now than she had been when she first arrived, though her good eye kept darting around and twitching at every sound from outside.
“I have no doubt, now take this and head to its address you’ll be safe there for the night.” Madame Sorola said as she handed Ashley a card and Ashley looked between the card and Madame Sorola before taking the card and bowing her head her good eye starting to water.
“Thank you. Thank you so much.” Ashley said and Madame Sorola gave her a small smile.
“You’re welcome, Ashley.” Madame Sorola said and Ashley bowed her head again throwing her hood back up and then leaving. Madame Sorola locked the door behind her and there was a moment of silence as she stood there in front of the door. You set down the clipboard and turned to face your stepmother as Lindsay and Meg came to stand beside you as your stepmother turned to face the three of you.
“Well?” Meg asked breaking the silence and your stepmother sighed as she walked up to the three of you her hands clasped together in front of her.
“She wants us to assassinate her husband who’s been beating her the entirety of their marriage and she’s finally had enough. She’s giving us 200 hundred gold to get it done as soon as possible.” She informed you all and you all nodded.
“So, who do you want to take care of this?” Lindsay asked and she looked between the three of you, in turn, her eyes fell on you.
“(Y/N), if you could take care of this preferably tonight that would be fantastic.” Your stepmother said and you nodded standing up a little straighter.
“Got it do you want me to do it now or should I wait to till later?” You asked.
“Whenever you want to you can go.” She told you and you nodded.
“Alright I’ll go get ready then I want to take care of this as soon as possible.” You said as you started walking towards the office and your stepmother nodded.
“Alright, I’ll tell your father that you’ll be home a little later than normal.” Madame Sorola said and you gave her a grateful smile.
“Thank you.” You said as you walked through the curtain and into the office.
You walked up to the bookshelves that lined one of the walls of the office, looking down you stared at the carpet for a second before stepping on the hidden pressure plate and bookshelves slid apart revealing a stone stairwell and one red stone torch. Taking the torch off the wall you started down the stairwell, one hand on the wall to steady yourself. The stairs led to what you, Lindsay, and Meg liked to call the war room only because it was where you all kept your weapons, disguises, assassin outfits, and where you would plan the bigger jobs. At the bottom of the stairs you pushed open a heavy wooden door and into a large torch-lit room, you hung the torch up on the wall by the door as you walked into the room and up to your cabinet. Pulling out your assassin outfit you changed into that and you had just finished getting it on when Lindsay walked into the room.
“Alright, we’re heading home now, you going to be able to handle this alone?” Lindsay asked and you looked up from tightening your hidden blades making sure that they wouldn’t slip.
“It’s just one guy Lindsay, I’m pretty sure that I can handle it. Thanks for the concern though.” You said as you pulled down your sleeves covering your blades and then reaching to your waist tightening your belt. Before grabbing a couple of throwing knives and sliding them into their holsters at your waist.
“Alright as long as you’re sure. When do you think you’ll be back?” Lindsay asked and you shrugged buttoning up your long coat and then flicking your hood up hiding your face.
“Don’t know it depends how long it takes to get rid of the body. I’ll try to be back before it gets too late.” You told her walking towards the other door in the room that leads to another secret passage that would take you to a less populated section of the city.
“Alright, good luck,” Lindsay said as she turned and left the room and you left through the passage.
You were crouched down on a tree branch that was just inside the fence surrounding Ashley’s house. One of your hands rested on the tree trunk as you glared at Ashley’s husband through the windows of their living room. He was just sitting there drinking beer and loudly shouting about how his wife wasn’t home yet and the asshole was extremely lucky that their neighbors weren’t close. ‘Or unlucky’ you thought as you looked at the front of the house where there were several monsters beating at the fence staring at the house drawn by the man’s shouting. You rolled your eyes when the man shouted more explanative about his wife and you stood up on the branch looking back at the monsters that were trying to get at you. Jumping off the branch you landed on the roof with barely a sound but you stayed crouched down there listening to the man continue to shout about his wife. Standing up you walked across the roof to the front of the house and dropped down in front of the door standing up you turned to face the door. The lock was ridiculous to pick as you stepped into the house, and immediately he started shouting.
“Where the fuck have you been?! You ignorant bitch! I told you to be home several hours ago!” Ashley’s husband shouted as he barreled out of the living room like a bull who saw red. He froze when he saw you and you resisted the urge to smirk at him as you met his gaze. There was a moment of silence as his alcohol addled brain worked through what he was currently seeing.
“Who the fuck are you?! And how the fuck did you get in here?!” He shouted pointing a threatening finger at you. You didn’t answer him at first choosing to be silent and then deciding to answer just as he was about to speak.
“Through the front door.” You stated which only seemed to piss him off and suddenly he was getting in your face. You crinkled your nose at the harsh stench of alcohol coming off of him but that was the only reaction that he was getting out of you which only added fuel to his fire.
“Are you one of that bitch’s friend? I thought I told her to stop hanging out with you idiots. Did she send you here? Too afraid to come home? That bitch.” He grumbled. You clenched and unclenched your hands glancing over him preparing to kill him.
“Well, are you?!” He shouted reaching out to grab you when you didn’t respond to him. You caught his wrist before he could twisting his arm around forcing him to turn around as you did. Pinning his arm behind his back you and you forced him towards the wall his drunken state making this only slightly difficult.
“Let go of me, you bitch!” He snarled digging his heels into the ground trying to worm his way out of your grasp and you struggled slightly to hold his arm back while dodging his other hand and push him towards the wall at the same time. You caught his other hand with your other hand pinning that behind his back as well gripping that wrist in the same hand.
“Let go of me!” He shouted again still struggling and you grabbed a fist full of his hair and shoved him into the wall slamming his face against the wall. Pinning him to the wall.
“Listen asshole what I’m about to do to you is an act of mercy compared to what you really deserve.” You told him in a monotone voice tightening your grip on his wrists and hair.
“Oh yeah? And what’s that?” He growled not at all deterred by the grip you had on him, in fact, he was still fighting you which only prompted you to push him further against the wall. You pulled his head back and slammed his face into the wall again with as much force as you could, and he screamed in pain.
“You… You bitch.” He forced out, blood spewing from his now broken nose. He spit some blood out on to the wall and you smirked as you raised your free hand so he could see your hand. Flicking your wrist back your hidden blade sprung forward and you peered at his face watching as it paled and fear filled his eyes though he did a good job at pretending he wasn’t scared He started fighting, even more, attempting to spit blood at you but you leaned back avoiding it, you pressed the blade against his neck glaring at him.
“Like I said this is an act of mercy compared to what you really deserve for what you did to your wife.” You said as slit his neck blood spraying the wall in front of you. Letting go of him you stepped back watching as he reached up grabbing his neck and turning around to face you, some blood spurted out from between his fingers catching you in the face and you flinched away. He took a step towards you and you didn’t move to watch as he chocked on the blood coughing it up, he fell to his knees his hands fell away from his neck and he fell forward. A puddle of blood quickly forming underneath him, and he twitched a couple of times before falling still. Sneering at the body you wiped your blade off on your pants before flicking your wrist and retracting the blade. Reaching up you wiped your face off and took a step towards him avoiding the blood as you nudged his body double checking.
That was when you heard the sound of fighting coming from outside and instantly you tensed up freezing where you stood straining to listen to the sound of fighting coming from outside. Dropping into a crouch you moved over to the window by the door, a hand resting on one of your knives while the other rested on the wall. Standing up slightly you peered over the window sill out front to see what exactly was going on out there only to see a familiar figure chopping and slashing their way through the monsters that stood out front narrowly avoiding a creeper explosion. Standing up fully you lowered your hand from your knife and walked out the door just as Michael killed the last monster.
“Michael, what the hell are you doing here?” You asked him as you walked up to him causing him to spin around his diamond sword raised ready to fight but when he saw that it was you he lowered his sword a relieved look on his face.
“Taking care of these monsters what the fuck did it look like? What are you doing here?” Michael asked as he flicked his sword attempting to clean off as much monster guts and blood.
“Just finished a job when I heard what was going on out here.” You told him and he nodded sheathing his sword. Michael was one of the few people who knew about what you and your stepsisters did for a nighttime job partially because he was a close friend and Lindsay’s boyfriend, the other reason being that he was also a mercenary/monster hunter for hire too. At your answer, he raised an eyebrow at you glancing at the house behind you.
“Abusive husband, wife finally had enough and came to us for help. I just killed him when I heard you, he didn’t hire you to take care of this, did he? Cause he is not going to be paying you.” You said glancing at the scattered skellington bones, gunpowder, arrows, and rotten flesh.
“What? Oh no I just saw this on my way home and decided to take care of it, damn good thing he didn’t hire me though can’t get money from a dead guy.” He chuckled and you shrugged.
“A very good thing, anyways I better go take care of that before the blood starts to stain and he starts to stink.” You said as you turned around and started walking back to the house.
“You want any help?” He called after you and you spun around walking backward watching as he started picking up any useful gubs.
“Nah I got it, thanks for the offer though.” You said stopping with your back against the door one hand on the doorknob.
“Alright, you guys coming over tomorrow?” Michael asked looking up at you as he finished shoving the gubs in his bag and you nodded. Tomorrow was the one day of the week that your stepmother had the shop closed leaving you, Lindsay, and Meg free to do what you wanted for the day.
“Yeah, we’ll be over in the afternoon, or at least I will be anyways, Lindsay and Meg will either be early or late all depends.” You told him and he nodded in understanding.
“Alright, I’ll see you tomorrow then.” He said as he turned and started walking away waving over his shoulder at you and you waved back even though he couldn’t see it before opening the door and walking back inside. Sighing you pursed your lips looking over the mess you had made for a couple of seconds before bending down and picking up his body to move him outside. It was going to be a long, long night of cleaning.

You had a busy week at work, and you haven’t had time to think about what Antonio said about moving on. And unfortunately, you ran out of time to think, today was the 2nd anniversary of Ryan's death. Waking up this morning, you already started to feel like you were going to cry. While taking a shower, you had some time to think about moving on and how to do that. After showering, you went to the flower shop that sat on the corner of your block before heading to the cemetery. As you walked through the cemetery, you carefully stepped over the headstones as you made your way over to his headstone. The gravesite looked untouched like it always does. Ryan had no family that was close by to take care of the site, expect you.
Kneeling you placed the flowers on the ground and cleaned up the grass and leaves. "I know I haven't been around in a while and I'm sorry, but I'm been struggling a little more than usual.” You whispered as tears formed in your eyes causing blurriness. “It’s been two years and I still feel like it was yesterday when I got the news.”
"I still think that you are going to walk through the door and kiss me and tell you to love me, but you're not because you're gone. I'm mad at you for leaving me and I shouldn't because it's not your fault. We were barely married when you left, I wanted a life with you, I wanted kids with you and now that's not happening." Your voice cracked as choked out a sob. "The last two years have been hell and today is even worse, because I came here to tell you that I can't keep thinking you're coming home. I need to move on. You're not coming back, and I have to learn to live with that."
“I know it’s going to be hard, but I need to do it for myself. I need to be happy again because I am tired of being broken and alone.” You wiped your tears just as fresh ones formed. “I’ve read your letter again, and I think your right about letting go and finding someone else.” Taking a deep breath, you wiped the tears again, “last week one night, I spent the night eating take-out and watching a corny TV movie with a guy who cares for me more than a friend, but he would never tell me that because he knows I would just push him away. I think he could be someone to be more than a friend, but I will never know if I keep holding on to you." Taking a deep breath, you stood up and placed a hand on the headstone. "I love you and I always will, but I need to let you go and move on." Leaning down, you kissed the top of the headstone before turning around to see Antonio keeping a fair distance.
Antonio opened his arms as you approached him. You collided into arms and lot out a sob that you couldn’t hold back anymore. “It’s going to be okay," Antonio whispered as he rubbed your back as you wrapped your arms around his waist. “I know that was hard for you.”
You pulled away to wipe the tears, “yeah it was, but I have to move on. He’s not coming back.” Antonio wrapped his arm around your shoulder as the two of head back towards his car. Originally you weren’t going to go to work but staying at home and sulking around isn't healthy.  You needed to go to work.
Once the two of you were in his car, Antonio’s phone started to ring, which he took the call. You glanced over at him and you could tell by the look on his face that something was wrong. Once the call ended, you turned to look at Antonio, “what is it?” Antonio hesitated which caused you to worry. “Just tell me.”
“Jay’s security team was ambushed.” Jay was working his security job today and apparently while they were doing a deposit the team was ambushed and one of the guys was injured.
The whole car ride to the district you felt tense as you thought about Jay. Since the beginning of the year, you and Jay have gotten closer ever since you saved him when he was kidnapped while working an undercover op. Then when Jay took you home, and brought you food and stayed the night, you have just been feeling closer to him. Once the two of you got to the district, Antonio headed upstairs while you waited in the garage for Jay to show up. You paced the floor as your anxiety rose. You came to a stop when you saw Al walk in with Jay right behind him.
“Jay.” You immediately walked over to Jay and hugged him tightly.
"Y/N, I'm okay," Jay whispered against your hair as he wrapped an arm you. “Any word from Med about Terry?”
“No nothing yet.” The two of you pulled away and headed upstairs. Once the two of you made it upstairs your father looked at both and the two of you headed into this office.
“You are not taking me off this case.” Stood behind Jay as you closed the door. You leaned against the door with your arms crossed. Your father glanced at you then back at Jay.
“That is not your call to make.”
“This is Terry’s blood.” Jay pointed at this sleeve that was covered in blood. “I saw the guys. You need me.” Your father looked at you which you gave him a slight nod. After agreeing to let him stay on the case, he left the room to go clean up, leaving you and your dad alone.
“I know what-” Your father pulled you into a hug which you hugged back without hesitation. “I’m okay. I went to his grave this morning.” You pulled away and sat on the arm of the sofa. "You know the last 2 years, things have been a struggle, but I need to move on and learn to live my life. He’s not coming back, and I have to accept that.”
“Whatever you need to help you through this let me know.” Your dad squeezed your shoulder for comfort.
"Actually, there is one thing that I can think of right now." Your dad hummed in response. "I want to be with Jay on this one. I know you won't understand, but just trust me." Your father nodded his head in agreement as you pushed yourself off the couch and left the office.
Tumblr media
“Jay.” You walked into the room where Jay was watching your dad and Antonio finishing up question Brianna Logan, who was Jay’s boss at the marijuana dispenser. “I just heard from Med. Terry didn’t make it. Massive hemorrhaging.” Jay turned to look at you and without saying a word he left the room. After a few moments, the interview was over and you exited the room only to be stopped by Adam, who said that the lab was able to get prints on the gun they found at the scene. You nodded your head and went to find Jay, only to see him and Brianna talking as you rounded the corner.
You couldn't help but hear the last first things exchange between the two. "I can't help but feel responsible for what happens to Terry." There was something about this Brianna woman that you didn’t like. Maybe it’s because she was clearly into Jay. Not that it should bother you. He a single man and he can do what and who he wants.
“You’re not. I am.” You could clearly hear the guilt in Jay’s voice which caused your heart to sink.
“Please tell Terry’s wife that I will take care of all the funeral costs." Brianna reached over and placed a hand on jay's bicep causing your to jealously raise. Okay, why does this bother you so much?
“He was in the marines, so he’ll get a military send off.”
“Hey, Jay we got something off the gun.” You took a step closer causing Brianna to step back. Jay told Brianna to lay low and that they would call her if they needed anything else. Once she left, you and Jay headed back into the bullpen to find the rest of the team.
"Okay, so the lab managed to pull a partial print off the clip inside the gun that was left at the scene. They matched to a guy named Joseph "Joey" Ortiz." Adam taped up the photo on the board as he spoke.
"Ortiz? Yeah, he's a known member of the Insane King crew. They don't sell drugs. Their M.O. is to follow the cartel mules with a large amount of money after big drug deals then they rob them. I had a run-in with them once when I worked a joint case with narcotics a few years ago.” You explained it to the team.
“Okay, put an investigative alert on Ortiz.” You nodded your head as you sat at your desk and picked up the phone.
“Okay, I gotta ask. Are you sleeping with this woman?” You stopped what you were doing and looked at your dad who was standing next to Jay by the board.
“Who Brianna?” Your dad looked at Jay with a stern face. “What does that have to do with the case?”
“All right, one more time. Are you sleeping with her?” You held your breath as you waited for him to answer. You also weren’t sure if you wanted to hear the answer.
“No.” Jay came right out and said it and relief washed over you.
Tumblr media
This case has really taken a toll on Jay the last few days but thankfully it was over. Al and Adam went to sweep the dispensary for bugs, and they found a bunch of bugs throughout her office. They were able to get serials numbers off them it turned out that Brianna’s soon-to-be ex-husband hired a PI to get dirt on her. Then after questioning the PI, we found out that he was in on the robbery along with a guy them Brigs but turned out that a crew that worked for Brigs was the one who did it. After the case was solved, Jay went to tell Brianna that he was quitting which made you secretly happy.
“Hey, need a ride home?” You looked up from your paperwork and saw Antonio putting on his coat.
“No, I’m good.” You fiddled with the pen in your hand. “I’m actually grabbing a beer with Jay at Molly’s after he’s done talking with Hank. I decided to tell Jay about Ryan.”
“Yeah? Are you sure?” Antonio sat on the edge of your desk.
“Yeah. It’s time.” You stood up from your chair and tossed the pen on your desk. “Lately, I’ve just been feeling, I guess you can say, closer to Jay and I thought I would feel guilty about it, but I don’t.” Tears built up in your eyes and you had no idea why you wanted to cry.
"Yeah, I've noticed that. This is a sign that you are moving in the right direction. Remember letting go and moving on. I know the last two years have been a struggle for you, but this could be the first step to figuring things out." Antonio placed his hands on your shoulders and rubbed your arms up and down. “So, if telling Jay about Ryan is what you feel is right then do it and then figure things out from there.”
You nodded your head before hugging Antonio. “This is why you’re my best friend.” You pulled away just as Jay exited the office.
“Ready to go? I can really use that drink.” You nodded your head as Antonio left leaving just you and Jay alone.
20mins Later
"Hey, detective." Herrmann leaned forward against the counter with a smile on his face.
"Hey, Herrmann.” You smiled back as you ordered two beers along with two shots. “Thanks.” You grabbed the drinks and moved through the crowd over to were Jay was sitting. "Alright, here we go." You handed Jay his beer along with the shot of whatever Herrmann gave you.
“To Terry.” The two of you raised your shot glasses in the air before chugging them down.
“How your cheek?” You motioned at Jay’s cheek where he got into an altercation with one of the crew members.
“I’ll be fine.” Jay took a swing of his beer. “Are you okay? You seem a little off the last couple of days.” You picked at the label on the beer bottle while trying to figure out a way to tell Jay. You wanted to tell Jay, but your nerves were getting the best of you and you were having second thoughts. “Y/N, whatever is you can tell me.” Jay reached over and grabbed your hand.
“There something I need to tell you and I don’t want you to look at me like I’m this fragile piece of glass.” You looked up at Jay and when his green eyes locked with yours, you instantly felt at ease. “Two years ago, I lost my husband.”
“Your husband?” Jay looked at you with complete shock.
“Yeah. I guess I should start from the beginning.” You took a deep breath then took a sip of your beer. "Well as you know I was in the Army and the reason why the left was because during my last mission I was taken, hostage. It was days until the rest of the team found me. When they did find me, I was in bad shape. I had two broken ribs, a broken wrist, a concussion, and a collapsed lung. I thought I was going to die."
“It was about a 6-month long recovery and it was hell. I did half my recover overseas in German and the other half back home in North Carolina, that was my post was at the time. Then after I left Army I can back home to Chicago. I moved back in with parents until I was able to get back on my feet. Coming back and adjusting to living was hard and it just triggered things. My father sent me to therapy to help with the problems I was dealing with and I was diagnosed with PTSD and anxiety. Once I got things under control, I joined the police force, and then about 3 years into the job I met my late husband. I was working my first case in Vice and he was working security detail for one of the victims." You stopped to take a sip of your beer than taking a deep breath.
“His name was Lieutenant Commander Ryan Campbell. He was Navy Seal before he decided to join the reserves. We dated for about 2years before he asked me to marry him and of course, I said yes. We were engaged for a little while before he got the call telling him that he was needed for active duty. We deiced to get married at the courthouse because we didn’t want to wait until he came back home because we didn’t know long, he was going to be deployed for. It was 6 months later when the officers showed up at my step and I knew.” Tears started to form in your eyes as you thought back to that day. Two Navy Officers stood at your door and you knew the drill. You knew Ryan wasn’t coming back.
“Hey,” Jay squeezed your hand causing you to come back to reality. “How did it happen?” Jay spoke low almost a whisper.
“IED overseas in Iraq. Getting that news was devastating, but deep down I knew that it could happen. My PTSD was triggered again, and I need time off to deal with everything. I eventually got onto some medicine and seeing someone once a week and it helped but I struggled to deal with the loss of Ryan. I still struggle, but I’m learning to accept that he’s got coming back and I need to move on.” You looked down closing your eyes to stop the tears, but it was too late. Jay removed his hand from yours and walked over to your side of the table and sat next to you and pulled you into a side hug. “Sometimes I feel so broken that I don’t know if I can put myself back together.”
"You are not broken," Jay muttered into your hair. “I don’t think you realize how strong you are. You may feel like your broken, but I don’t think you are.” You pulled away and Jay looked at you with a soft smile. “This doesn't change the way I look you. I don't see you as a fragile piece of glass." Jay reached over and wiped the tears that were rolling down your cheek.
After the two of you finished your drinks, Jay drove you home, walked you to your door, and to be honest you felt great that you were able to tell Jay about everything. You felt a weight lifted off your shoulders. “Thanks for listening tonight. I really need to tell you.”
“Always. If you ever need to talk about anything. Just know that I am here.” You grabbed your keys from your purse, turned to unlock the door, and once you unlocked the door you turned back around. Looking at Jay, a smile formed on your face and something inside of you sparked. Without thinking, you leaned over and connected your lips to his. You could feel Jay was hesitant at your sudden actions and causing you to pull away.
“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that.” You whispered as you turned back around and opened the door to head inside your apartment. Jay was about to stop you but decided against it, not wanting to make the situation worse. Once you were inside, you locked your door and leaned your back against before sliding down to the floor. What have you done? Did you misread the signals over the last couple of months? Maybe he found someone who wasn’t broken. For the first time in a long time, you thought you could be happy but you guess you were too late.

Assassin Chapter Two
Pairings: (eventual) mad king x reader
Word count: 4440
Summary: You, Lindsay, and Meg go to Michael and Gavin’s house where you guy see a friend you haven’t seen in a while, and learn some unsetteling news.
“Fuck where did they go?” You mumbled to yourself as you spun in a circle in the clearing you now found yourself in. You were straining to hear over the sound of your own labored breathing and the sound of your blood rushing through your ears as you scanned the tree line searching for where everyone had gone. You had lost them in the scramble to get away when you had heard the hoard of zombies coming your way catching you all with your pants down essentially. The sound of footsteps beating against the forest floor and a body crashing through the bushes and tree branches that surrounded the clearing caused you to jump. Instantly you were pulling out your bow and notching an arrow as you spun around to face the sound just in time to see a hooded figure come crashing through the tree line and into the woods.
You froze where you stood your body tense and ready to let the arrow fly as you stared at the person. They were bent over their hands on their knees panting heavily, their hood blocked the majority of their faces. For a long moment neither of you moved, though to be fair you weren’t too sure that the person even realizes that you were there that didn’t matter to you, they’d notice soon enough and notice they did. They lifted their head slightly and instantly they noticed you, jumping back from you they turned their face to meet your gaze piercing blue eyes staring at you as their hand moved to reveal the hilt of a sword. A snarl started to form on your lips as you glared at them your body tensing more as the two of you entered a stare down neither of you moving.
~Earlier~
“Lindsay come on we’re gonna be late.” You whined as you stood outside her door with Meg who looked just as annoyed as you felt with how long Lindsay was taking to get ready. The longer that Lindsay took the more likely the three of you were going to get caught when you left the house, or the three of you would end up being roped into doing something ladylike.
“Maybe we should just leave without her, she can catch up she knows where it is,” Meg suggested and you cast a look back at Lindsay’s door before shrugged. Truth be told you’d rather that all of you went together because then you didn’t have to worry about Lindsay getting lost because even though the three of you had been to Michael’s house a million times at this point that wouldn’t stop Lindsay from getting a little confused on how to get there.
“No, no, I’m ready, come on guys let’s go,” Lindsay stated as she walked out of her room wearing a man’s riding outfit. Both you and Meg stared at her for a second that was not the outfit that you had thought she would walk out wearing with the amount of time that she had taken to get ready. You and Meg shared a look before you held your hands up in defense and turned around.
“Alright, we’re already so let’s just go.” You said eager to get out of the house for a few hours and away from proper society for a few hours.
“What? What’s wrong with my outfit?” Lindsay asked as the three of you walked through the halls of the mansion heading downstairs to the garden.
“You’re wearing men’s riding clothes Lindsay, you tell me,” Meg commented.
“So? (Y/N)’s wearing men clothes as well, why aren’t you judging her?” Lindsay asked and I looked back at her as we paused at a corner.
“Because I’m not wearing men’s riding clothes, I’m wearing hunting clothes which is a lot more fit for where we’re going. You look like you’re supposed to go for a spin around the town.” You commented before peering around the corner checking for any maids. When you saw no one you motioned for Meg and Lindsay to follow as you stepped out from around the corner swiftly making your way towards the back stairs.
“Exactly, at least if we run into anyone in the woods (Y/N) will look like she belongs, you’ll look like you lost your horse,” Meg added as you all descended the stairs and then took a sharp left into a hallway that would lead to a large sunroom and then out into the garden.
“So? Then I’ll still belong in the woods because I’m looking for my horse, besides you're the one in a dress and you’re talking about how I look like I’ll be out of place.” Lindsay pointed out and you shook your head as the three of you walked into the sunroom and out into the garden.
“I’ll have you know that the dress I’m wearing is a perfect commoner dress who would be out walking in the woods traveling or searching for mushrooms and berries.” Meg’s tone was confident and you glanced back at them an amused look on your face. In all actuality, it didn’t matter what any of you were wearing because you’d all be too far out in the woods for anyone other than Michael and Gavin to be there. So it wasn’t like wearing the proper disguises was necessary hence why all of you were in different clothing. You knew Lindsay was wearing the only real boy outfit that she had in her room, and Meg was only wearing the dress because of the way it complimented her and because she wanted to impress Gavin, and you were wearing the hunting outfit because it was comfortable. It also felt like you were wearing your Assassin outfit, the freedom of movement that came with not wearing a dress or a corset was was one of the best feelings in the world, that and it gave you an excuse to carry your bow an arrow. A weapon that you were still trying to master completely, it came in handy when you had to deal with skeletons and creepers.
“Ladies, either way, we’ll stand out if someone sees us two of us are dressed as men.” You told them as the three of you walked through the flowers, hedges, and sculpted bushes of the garden heading to the back where vines had grown along the wall enough to climb up and over.
“Fair point,” Lindsay said and Meg nodded in agreement with her.
Once the three of you were over the wall and officially in the forest the three of you feel silent and moved even quieter. All of you were on edge as you made traveled through the woods, there was a reason that people avoided the woods and stayed within the relative safety that was Achievement City no matter the time of day. That was because even if it was the middle of the day the monsters that filled the night with their horrible bone-chilling sounds still roamed around, the trees providing just enough shade that some would still remain. Not enough to cause any real issues should you run into them but enough that it still kept the three of you on edge and jumping at every little sound.
It took the three of you maybe an hour and a half to get to Michael and Gavin’s house and that was with only running into a few monsters. Either way, the familiar sight of their house filled you with a calming sense of relief and before you could say anything to Lindsay or Meg the two of them were racing off towards the house. You rolled your eyes as you followed them a small smile on your face, the two of them were so in love with those too you almost found it comical.
“Hello?! Anyone home!” Lindsay yelled as she knocked on the door and seconds later it was opened by Michael who stopped and did a double take of Lindsay’s outfit.
“What are you wearing?” He asked and Lindsay groaned dropping her head back so she was looking up at the sky.
“Not you too, first Meg and (Y/N) complain about my outfit and then you. If Gavin says anything I’m going to slap him.” Lindsay muttered to herself and Michael chuckled stepping aside and letting us in. You smiled and nodded to Michael as you stepped through the door and he nodded back closing the door behind you and following you into the rest of the house. The house wasn’t much it was a simple two-story house with the kitchen and living room sharing the entirety of the downstairs with their two bedrooms and the one guest room upstairs.
“Meg!” Gavin cried as soon as everyone was in the house and you looked over just in time to see Meg be pulled into a giant hug by Gavin, one that she happily returned with a similar cry of Gavin’s name. You, Michael, and Lindsay chuckled at the sight of them.
“Hey (Y/N).” You looked over in surprise to see Ray standing by the couch and a large smile spread across your face and you were quick to walk over to him and even quicker to hug him. Michael might have been your best friend but Ray was your favorite out of the three lads despite you never see much of him because he preferred to live elsewhere.
“Ray! It’s so good to see you! How have you been?” You asked excitedly, hugging him a little tighter before you pulled away from him. The easy smile that he had been wearing when you walked over was gone now and had been replaced with a forlorn look that caused a ball of unease to form in your stomach.
“Not good,” Ray said and your stomach sank as you shared a look with everyone else. The joy at seeing the three of you had faded from Gavin and Michael’s faces and had been replaced with serious looks.
“Why what happened?” You asked and a look of anger spread across Ray’s face the likes of which that you’d never seen and it caused you to take a few steps back at the fire in his eyes.
“They found me,” Ray stated and instantly you tensed. Very few people knew were Ray lived partially because he liked his privacy but mainly because the last time that you had checked Ray was harboring Geoff and Jack the rightful heirs to the throne. The people who should be sitting on those thrones now but were forced into hiding after the Mad King took it from them, it wasn’t a day that you remembered fondly. Or at all if you could avoid it.
“What do you mean they found you? Who found you?” Lindsay asked and you could hear the hope in her voice the hope that it was people who were meant to help the six of you, people who wanted the Mad King gone as much as you did. But you knew better. You knew that if it had been someone to help Ray wouldn’t be here, he wouldn’t have that look on his face, Michael and Gavin wouldn’t be pissed off with him, you knew that it couldn’t be anyone else but him.
“The Mad King.” You answered for Ray and he nodded not at all surprised that you’d already figured it out. No one gasped at the answer, but the flicker of hope that had shown on Meg and Lindsay’s faces quickly died out and were replaced with the determined looks they got when they were on a job.
“Are Geoff and Jack ok? They’re not… are they?” Meg asked unable to bring herself to voice what you were already thinking and god did you hope that they were ok.
“I don’t know we were lucky to get out when we did, the traps that Jack and Geoff had set up around the house actually managed to catch one of the Mad King’s men and we were able to get away. But it was dark and there was a fight at one point and I lost them.” Ray said as he looked down at the ground and you worried your bottom lip between your teeth. Walking up to him you placed a comforting hand on his shoulder and gave him a small smile.
“I’m sure they’re fine Ray they escaped the Mad King once they can escape him again. Besides Geoff wouldn’t let anything happen to Jack you know that.” You reassured him and he looked up at you a small, still guilty, smile on his face through some of the tensenesses in his shoulders did release a little.
“That’s what I told him, they’re probably just hiding somewhere until it’s safe to leave like in a cave or something,” Gavin said and you chuckled internally at the idea of Geoff hiding out in a cave.
“Exactly.” You commented and some of the guilt faded from Ray’s smile as he looked between you and Gavin.
“This is great and all but what are we going to do now?” Lindsay asked and you dropped your hand from Ray’s shoulder and instead leaned back against the couch.
“We were just talking about what to do when you guys arrived,” Michael stated crossing his arms over his chest as he leaned against a wall looking at us all.
“What did you guys come up with?” Meg asked and Michael cast a glance at Ray and you looked at Ray out of the corner of your eye.
“I want to go out and check the house and see if we can find any clues as to which way Geoff and Jack may have gone, and see if there’s anything left of the house, to begin with,” Michael told you and you nodded your head. That would be the smart thing to do because now the most important thing was finding Jack and Geoff again and making sure that they were ok.
“As much as I want to find them again I don’t want to do that because the Mad King could be watching the house, he could have men outside of it thinking that we’ll come back to the house.” Ray’s voice was firm and tense when he spoke so you were guessing that they’d been arguing about this for a while now.
“But that’s just it, he’ll never expect us to go back to the house so soon after he found it. He knows we’ll want to lay low for a while which is why we should go now and check it out.” Gavin said and a look of exasperation crossed Ray’s face as he looked at you, Lindsay, and Meg for help. The three of you shared a look you didn’t know what they wanted to do but you knew that you wanted to go look at the place even if the place was surrounded with the Mad King’s knights.
“I think we should go.” You said and a look of surprise crossed Ray’s face which was quickly followed by one of defeat when he glanced a Lindsay and Meg who nodded their heads in agreement.
“Going will be better than not going at all, besides even if we don’t get close to the house the perimeter can offer enough information as to where they went if we know what to look for. Which I do.” Lindsay pointed out.
“What if there are knights there? I don’t want you guys getting hurt.” Ray stated his eyes quickly darting to you first and then around the room.
“Then we’ll just have to be careful and not be seen. Don’t worry Ray it’s not like this is any of our first times sneaking around a group of dangerous people.” Meg waved her hand dismissively at the concern that was still on Ray’s face.
“Yeah, it’s like what our fifth, sixth time?” You asked looked at Lindsay who was smiling now.
“Oh, the tenth time at the very least,” Lindsay added and Ray groaned dropping his head back and looking up at the ceiling.
“Oh my god you people are going to get me killed.” He muttered and you chuckled reaching out and patting him on the back.
“It’s better to die with friends than to die old and alone at the hands of an enemy.” You stated in a mystic tone that made the others laugh and Ray shake his head.
It took a good few hours to get to Ray’s house the six of you only moving as fast as any of you dared which wasn’t very fast considering the number of times you all had to stop and take care of a monster that was coming for the six of you. That and you all wanted to make sure that you weren’t being followed by anyone who happened to see any you or if the Mad King had a scout out looking for Ray. By the time all of you got within a couple hundred yards of the house it was already late in the afternoon and you were all starting to get panicky. The way here had been easier than any of you expected and none of you knew if that was a good thing or if that was a bad thing.
“Teams of two, we’ll all circle around the house and then come back here. Ray, (Y/N) you two go together, I and Meg will go together, and Michael keep an eye on Gavin.” Lindsay said and all of you nodded. Getting into your teams the six of you broke apart, Lindsay and Meg went left while you and Ray took the right side leaving Gavin and Michael to go up the middle.
The closer the two of you got to the house the tenser you each became and the closer to the ground you each got until you were both crouch walking, using the bushes and trees as cover. Neither of you moved from one hiding spot to the other until you were absolutely sure that there was no one near either of you. It was slow progress just getting to the edge of the clearing that the house was built in, it did help that you had to stop and disable what traps the Mad King’s men hadn’t managed to set off, but it was progress nonetheless. As the two of you moved around the house you scanned the ground and surrounding area looking for signs of either a Knight or for where Geoff and Jack would have gone but you didn’t see anything. The longer you went without seeing a sign the bigger the pit in your stomach got, something was going to go wrong you could feel it, something wasn’t right.
Ray grabbed your arm and pulled you back into him and instantly your hand was on your knife and your body tense as your eyes darted around the area searching for what had caused Ray to do that. When you didn’t see anything you looked at Ray in confusion. He picked up a stick and carefully brushed away some leaves to reveal a wooden pressure plate underneath, your eyes widened at the sight thinking that it was something the Mad King had left behind. One look at Ray though killed that idea as he made a soft explosion noise and gesture, so it was a trap that Geoff had set up. Nodding you walked around the pressure plate and the two of you continued walking around the house.
The two of you got to the back of the house and came face to face with Lindsay and Meg. You shook your head at the sight of them and they shook their heads right back and that sense that something was going to go wrong grew as you looked around the area again. The Mad King was playing a game with all of you, you just knew it, what it was you had no idea but you knew he was up to something. You all wait in silence until Michael and Gavin join you Michael shaking his head to confirm what you were already thinking. There was no one here and there was no sign of Jack or Geoff.
“What should we do now?” Gavin whispered. Despite all of you know that it was clear none of you wanted to risk it in case someone came back.
“None of you saw anything? No footprints, broken branches, anything?” Ray asked and again everyone shook their head.
“Is there any other way they could have gotten out of the house?” You questioned casting a glance back at the house. Ray was silent as he thought for a minute before looking back at the house.
“Well there is one way that they could of gone, a secret tunnel that leads farther out into the middle of nowhere, but Jack and Geoff clearly ran out the door with me I just don’t know which way as soon as I got out of the house I sprinted for the tree line and then started for your guy’s house. I lost them at some point.” Ray admitted and you frown.
“Could it be possible they decided to go back in and take the tunnel?” Meg asked and Ray shook his head.
“No they were already breaking through the treeline on the side of the house by the time we had gotten a good distance away, it would have been suicidal to go back in,” Ray said and you purse your lips still looking at the house. Looking around you stood up and turned in a small circle before looking at the house.
“Can we go inside and look around?” You asked looking down at Ray who nodded.
“Yeah, I want to get some things anyway,” Ray answered as he stood up everyone following suit. Together you all walked towards the front of the house, as everyone filed inside you scanned the tree line squinting in concentration. Still unable to shake that feeling. For a fraction of a second, you swear you saw something move in a bush just to the right of a large oak, and you took a step closer to it trying to see what it had been. Again you saw something more and your hand was on your knife in seconds as you took another step towards the bush drawing your knife and preparing to throw it. A rabbit bounded out of the bush just as you pulled your knife free and instantly you relaxed releasing a small sigh at the sight of the animal, it had just been a rabbit. Maybe your bad feeling was all for nothing, putting your knife away you turned and walked into the house.
While the outside of the house looked perfectly fine the same could not be said for the inside of the house which looked like a twister had torn through the place.
“Wow, they left no stone unturned.” You commented as you tentatively stepped over some glass glad that you had worn boots today instead of cotton slippers.
“They found the passageway.” Ray murmured staring at the dark expanse that lay beyond a turned over bookshelf.
“Maybe that’s where all of his men are watching where the passageway comes out. The Mad King must have thought that none of you would come back to the house the normal way so he set up people to watch that.” Lindsay tried to offer an explanation as to why the house was ransacked but unguarded. You didn’t say anything as you stepped over a pile of books walking towards the stairs that lead upstairs.
“Yeah maybe,” Ray said but it was clear that he didn’t fully believe Lindsay. He stared at the passageway for a couple more seconds before turning and walking away.
“I need to get my weapons, hopefully, he didn’t find that,” Ray said as he carefully moved about the house. For the most part, everyone stayed on the first floor, well except for you. You had silently made your way upstairs to check the damage that had been done up there. The second floor was in a similar state as the first floor, the beds had been overturned and clothes were thrown all over the place. Again bookshelves had been knocked over onto the floor and any glass in the rooms had been smashed to bits, even some floorboards had been ripped up. Glass crunched underneath your boots as you walked around looking through all the rooms for anything that might stick out and take care to look out each window as you went. When you found and saw nothing you walked back downstairs just as Ray rejoined the others.
“Thank god they didn’t find my weapons,” Ray said as he tightened his belt securing his diamond sword to his waist.
“Hey Ray, is anything missing?” You asked causing everyone to jump slightly none of them realizing that you had left and come back until you said something. At your question, Ray’s eyes darted around the house trying to see if anything had been taken in the chaos eventually he shook his head looking at you.
“No, why?” He asked and you shrugged.
“Don’t know just wondering if there was anything of importance here that the Mad King might want.” You said and Ray shook his head.
“No the only thing of importance here was Geoff and Jack but they’re gone.” He said and you nodded looking around again. That feeling seemed to have just gotten worse the more you walked around the house and the longer you stayed here to the point where you had to stop yourself from looking over your shoulder every couple of seconds.
“(Y/N) what’s wrong?” Lindsay asked and again you shrugged.
“I don’t know I just have this bad feeling.” You said as you looked around the house again. Besides you everyone tensed casting their own suspicious looks around the place, they all knew you well enough to know that when you started feeling like something was going to wrong things usually went wrong. How though was the unnerving part.
“Alright on that note when I say we get out of here. If (Y/N)’s feeling turns out to be right I don’t want to be around when it’s proven right.” Ray said and he was already moving towards the door. In silent agreement you all followed him out the door prepared to make the long trek back to Michael’s.
