Titanic Flooring Collection
Due to reasons relating to practicality and durability, most of the flooring in the common rooms on all clases, where made out of a brand new and resistent material: linoleum!
It wasn't seen aa tacky as we see it today, but rather groundbreaking and an elegant solution to the constant problem of worn-out floorings due to the constant use by several different people during the various voyages that were planned to take place. It was water-proof, rat-proof and pest-proof making it an excellent option for IIIrd Class Passenger that weren't exactly the cleanest of passengers for obvious reasons.
Not all public areas were covered in Linoleum, but Axminster Carpeting was found only in first class staterooms and public rooms, such as the Reception Room, the Lounge, the Reading and Writing Room and the À La Carte restaurant (the last two were covered in Pink DuBarry Carpeting that I could not find anywhere, if anyone has the textures I'd be really thankful) aswell as in its sister ships, the Olympic and the Britannic.
Water-proof flooring was vital in rooms such as the Turkish Baths and Swimmimg Baths, aswell as the private and comunal water closets.
This set contains 18 patterns, of:
The Axminster Carpeting on the Ist Class Reception Room
Linoleum of the Ist Class Dining Saloon (Large)
Linoleum of the Ist Class Dining Saloon (medium)
Linoleum from the Ist Class Hallway
Linoleum from the Ist Class Smoking Room
Linoleum from the Turkish Baths
Axminster Carpeting from the Ist Class Lounge (Historically Accurate)
Axminster Carpeting from the Ist Class Lounge (and Reception Room) (Movie Accurate)
Linoleum from the Swimming Baths
Linoleum from the Ist Class Lifts
Linoleum from the IInd Class Smoking Room
Linoleum from the IInd Class Dining Room
Linoleum from the IInd Class Staircase
Linoleum from the Firemen's Spiral Staircase Landing.
Linoleum from the IIIrd Class Smoking Room
Linoleum from the IIIrd Class Staircase
A Bonus! Axminster Carpeting from the Grand Staircase of the Britannic After WWI!
Found under Plastic and Rubber and Carpeting in Create a Style Mode.
Disclaimer!
Most of the textures found here were courtesy of the Encyclopedia Titanica Archive and Forum, except from the Swimming Baths Linoleum, I drew it myself.

An extra titanic gift!
Since all of tankuz' links are either dead or severely broken, downloading her creations is impossible, so I reuploaded the Veranda Set in my Drive so your edwardian sims can also enjoy the elegance onboard the Titanic!
If you want some more Titanic cc, check out Dot's 1912 Grand Staircase Set that includes the First Class Grand Staircase Linoleum (that's why I didn't make the texture)

What is it about the RMS Olympic that makes it stand out from other ocean liners?
For me it's a lot of things. I'm going to start with a weird one. Her engines.
The RMS Mauretania was the biggest ship in the world until the Olympic was completed in 1911, and the fastest until 1927. She was designed for speed first and foremost. She had 4 propellers powered by steam turbines, which were the new hot thing at the time. Cunard built 2 "test ships," the Carmania and the Caronia. Carmania had steam turbines, and Caronia had traditional triple expansion steam engines. Carmania was faster, so Cunard used turbines. Mauretania had a top speed (at the time) of about 27.75 knots. Which is impressive. However, her service speed, the speed she went at when she crossed the ocean, was 23.69 knots. Mauretania was designed for speed. This was an impressive speed. The fastest way to cross the ocean for 20 years.
Meanwhile, Olympic was built with comfort in mind. Steam turbines were a relatively new technology and not well understood. Ships that had them had really bad vibration issues, and White Star didn't care about speed. They weren't looking to compete with Cunard on that front. So, they equipped the Olympic with traditional triple expansion steam engines. However, after the steam was exhausted from the final cylinder, it was redirected into a low-pressure turbine. This strange combination engine system gave the Olympic 3 Propellers. Without the turbine, she probably wouldn't have gone above 18 knots. But with that little extra push, her top speed became competitive with Cunard. Her top speed was 21.75 knots. So even without the new fancy turbines, she was effectively only 2 knots slower. But that's not the impressive part about all of this.
In a single day, the Mauretania burned on average 1,000 tons of coal to go 23.69 knots. Meanwhile, Olympic, with her weird engine Mish mash, only consumed 650 tons in a day. And she was only 2 knots slower! And with the turbine propeller right behind her (comparatively) large rudder, she was a really good turner for a ship of her size. I just love the engineering here.
Anyway, that's only one reason I love her so much. Her career was another great thing about her. After Titanic sank, White Star refitted Olympic to make her even safer (she was objectively the safest ship in the world both before and after this refit) and White Star pulled the biggest PR comeback in history. Her return to service in 1913 was widely celebrated. During World War 1, she served as a troop ship, and she is the only Ocean Liner to have ever sunk enemy tonnage in either World Wars. A German U-Boat was trying to torpedo her, but because she could turn so well, they were actually able to swing her around, ram the U-Boat and sink it! She also survived a separate torpedo attack because it failed to detonate when it struck. After the war, when they put her in dry dock, they found the hole. They didn't even know they were hit! The double hull contained the flooding. After the war, she returned to passenger service and became extremely popular with the rich and famous, earning herself the nickname of "the movie star liner." By the 1930s, White Star's new flagship, the Majestic, was having some extreme problems. She was a German ship given to them as compensation for the loss of Britannic. She began having some electrical problems that caused frequent fires, and her hull plates were tearing. Even though she was 10,000 tons bigger than Olympic, and she was a newer and safer ship, Olympic was still in fantastic shape, suffering from none of these problems.
Next, is her interiors. I love the Edwardian wood paneling. Ships before Olympic like the Adriatic are a bit too sparse for my taste, and ships like the Aquitania just don't look comfortable to me. Her interiors are gorgeous, but it's kind of imposing. I wouldn't want to sit on the furniture or get close to the walls. It's like a work of art, but that doesn't make her comfortable. I have the same problem with the Normandie. Beautiful, but not comfortable. People nowadays forget that you actually had to live inside these ships for about a week at a time. We can only look. Occupying these interiors is very different. Meanwhile, I feel like the Olympic gets that perfect balance between looking gorgeous, but not being imposing. I can imagine myself sitting comfortably on a chair in the grand staircase and watching the people go by. I like the pseudo art deco of the Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, and Mauretania 2, but I just prefer the Edwardian decor of the Olympic.
Next is her exterior. She's not my favorite in this regard, that title goes to the SS United States. But the Olympic is still gorgeous. I like the height to width ratio of her funnels, I think they're a good size relative to the rest of her. For an example of funnels I don't like, I think the Normandies funnels are way too thick and tall. The Olympics superstructure is appealing and isn't too tall. The rounded bridge atop the flatter lower decks has just an incredible effect. The Big 4 had the bridge separate from the rest of the superstructure, and it looked kinda goofy to me. Olympic is just all around really good in this regard. Not the best, but really good.
I think it's such a shame that she's been reduced to "Titanic's sister." She was so much more than that. I can talk about the Olympic for hours, but this post is too long already.

Can I request more Olympic,,, like some fun fact about them? I love them, they're great
sure thing!
When Olympic was serving in the war, sometimes she’d return to the base damaged and would need to pass by the medical ships. There she’d usually come across her rival, Mauretania. They always greeted by flipping the bird in silence at each other;
She has a personal dislike (read: hate) for icebergs and can get a bit too invested in destroying them during winter (since they were the reason she almost lost her first sister);
She still lowkey blames herself for not being fast enough to save Titanic;
She’s pretty damn awkward when it comes to any kind of affection;
The “scarf” around her neck can actually be removed. It was added to serve as an extra vent set (the vents are located on its back), but it wasn’t added to Titanic or Britannic because they were already built with extra vents on their body as an improvement;
If the scarf is removed, Olympic may overheat faster;
As the first of her class, Olympic is supposed to be physically weaker than her sisters. However, since her sisters suffered accidents that prevented them from developing properly, Olympic managed to rise as one of the best ships in the Base not because of physical strength, but because of pure skill and experience;
Olympic managed to hit three different ships (which one of them she willingly ran over) and never even came close to sinking;
She easily loses track of her age;
She likes bears;
Much like her sisters and a good portion of the older ocean liners, Olympic’s vision is slightly blurry and composed of dulled colors, like an old camera.

BIOGRAPHY
olivia olympic was born in a golden crib, meant to have everything ( and more ) than what any girl could ever want. living in the family's countryside estate, olivia was practically designed from young age to be a proper lady. as the eldest olympic sister it is no wonder that she is the most level headed &&  responsible of the three  ------ which becomes a handy trait years later, after their parents die.
after the three ladies are left to manage the shipping company && fortune on their own, olivia naturally takes the lead of the company ------ trying her best to make their business grow and maintain their expensive && luxurious lifestyle.  although the rival, cousin, company tried to buy the olympic's company, olivia  was quite vocal about her refusal  ------ not even considering the idea of giving away the only thing that reminded them of their parents.
after her graduation, olivia started to write books && journals as a pastime ------ sadly, she never dared to publish them. prior to her parents deaths, she considered taking a teaching career. strong, determinate && patient, olivia leads her life as kindly as she can, despite the rough years && the loss her family would go through. as a gift to her sisters, and to continue her father's projects, three sister ships were built and named after them: the Olympic, the Titanic && the Britannic and, for some time, happiness returned Olympic family.
but alas, life was not a dream && all good things must come to an eventual end. tatiana's death in the sinking of her ship's maiden voyage caused a big impact on olivia, who turned to her work to ease away the pain of the loss. with the eruption of the war, olivia made the decision of withdrawing the Olympic from civilian and commercial services to convert it into a troopship.
after refusing the prior two marriage proposals of charles, a member of the rival company owner of the ship that rescued the Titanic victims, olivia eventually accepts. although the couple was the most unusual, due to their clashing personalities, their marriage worked better than what was expected.
unfortunately, death knocked on the olympic family's door once again, this time taking the youngest. had it not been for charles,  olivia would've given up on everything after brianna's death. her ship eventually returned to civilian service after the war && served successfully as an ocean liner throughout the 1920s and into the first half of the 1930s, yet she was no longer the lively, strong willed, woman she had been for, when her sisters died, part of her heart died with them.
with the increasing competition && the great depression, olivia's company ended up joining her husband's company in order to survive. in her later years of life, olivia became ill and eventually died in 1937. charles took care of her through her last years and published olivia's notebook of letters to her deceased sisters, fullfilling his wife's last wish to publish a book.

The Rubber Hits the Road (Leftism at work)
Tumblr media
Mark Steyn, 9 September 2019
On becoming Zimbabwe's first Prime Minister in 1980, Robert Mugabe told Ian Smith, the stubborn leader of white Rhodesia who had defied Harold MacMillan's "winds of change" for two decades:
You have given me the jewel of Africa.
Mugabe took the jewel and shattered it, leaving a few splinters and shards strewn across a wasteland. A thuggish and evil man, he had also been given an advantage over the first generation of post-colonial leaders from the Sixties and Seventies: The mistakes were well known and he didn't have to repeat them.
But he did anyway. And he managed to hang on longer than Nkrumah and Nyerere, Kenyatta and Kaunda and the other Afro-Marxist kleptocrats, holding even more deranged and capricious power until he was forced from office at the age of ninety-three two years ago. He negotiated a very generous departure deal and died this week at the Gleneagles Hospital in Singapore, a medical facility beyond the reach of his unfortunate subjects.
I wrote about the old monster over the years. In 2017 I noted, notwithstanding the mountain of corpses he'd piled up, his abiding status with the "international community". The World Health Organization, ostensibly one of the least nutty operating units of the UN (compared with, say, the Human Rights Council), had announced that Robert Mugabe was being appointed a WHO "Goodwill Ambassador":
Mr Mugabe's idea of "goodwill" is to send his goons round to your farmhouse to announce he's stealing your land - and, if you're minded to object, kill your farm workers or wife or kid. When Zimbabwe's nonagenarian monster goes Goodwill hunting, best not to stand in his path.
Yesterday the WHO was forced to back down. But how did it ever get as far as an official announcement? Mugabe's greatest contribution to "world health" has been to raise the comparative life expectancy of every other country by dramatically reducing his own over his first quarter-century:
Life expectancy in Zimbabwe, 1980: 59.39 years
Life expectancy in Zimbabwe, 2005: 41.76 years
In fairness, this wasn't accomplished merely through killing people. He also starved his hospitals of basic drugs and materials, while jetting off to Singapore and Kuala Lumpur for the world-class medical treatment that kept him remarkably spry at the age of 93. And thus the monster outlived all those who delivered into his hands that "jewel of Africa". As I wrote in The National Post in 2002:
After two decades of Mr. Mugabe's stewardship, per capita income has fallen by half, inflation is running at over 100% and unemployment at 60%, and the government has no idea how to correct any of these lamentable developments except by forcing white farmers off their property and turning productive land to dust. The official position is that the present situation is the fault of the white minority and of Britain.
Indeed. Mr Mugabe accused Her Britannic Majesty's Government of a secret plan to impose homosexuality throughout the Commonwealth. There's a conspiracy theory we can all get behind:
Robert Mugabe subsequently warmed to his theme and called Tony Blair a "gay gangster" leading "the gay government of the gay United gay Kingdom". A Downing Street spokesgay denied the charge:
'The Prime Minister is not a gay gangster.'
Back in 1980, Robert Mugabe was a cold but courtly Afro-Marxist. He liked cricket for its "civilizing" influence, he had English hunting scenes on the place mats at Government House, and he spoke in the elegant vowels of a post-war London drawing room, not the flatted tones of the veldt settler. But he had a lot of blood on his hands, and a taste for more than the usual casualties of a "liberation movement": In 1978, in the Vumba mountains, Mugabe's plucky "freedom fighters" slaughtered nine white missionaries, after raping the women and their four children - one a month old and another found with a boot imprint on her shattered skull. He was always a vicious killer, and an economic illiterate, and was quite happy to use the former skill to punish victims of the latter. But he was not, as he later appeared to be, stark staring nuts. Many have speculated on the reasons for this. In Zimbabwe, it is widely believed he was driven insane by tertiary syphilis. ....
And yet he endured, almost to the end. While Britain and other former colonial powers turned a blind eye to Africa, the likes of Mugabe looted their governments' treasuries, their countries' resources, their peoples' wealth and western taxpayers' bountiful "development" funds. You still hear African leaders demanding to know why the US won't set up a "Marshall plan for Africa", which conveniently overlooks the fact that since 1960 the west has sunk the cost of the Marshall plan many times over into the dark continent with nothing to show for it other than a few extra zeroes on the Swiss bank balances of the dictators-for-life. While the west snoozed complacently, the Afro-Marxist kleptocrats helped themselves, and ransacked a continent: to grease his departure from office, Mugabe insisted on two separate payments of ten million dollars. Public service, Africa-style.
Robert Mugabe knew nothing but how to destroy: he inherited a considerable something, and left a rotted and diseased nothing. … He beggared Rhodesia and faute de mieux turned it into what it is today - a de facto Chinese colony - merely swapping one colonial master for another.

In Defence of J Bruce Ismay
Tumblr media
It’s the 105th anniversary of the Titanic’s sinking, and I want to commemorate it by defending this guy, J Bruce Ismay. You might recognise him from the 1997 movie – the man with the moustache, the evil one who forced the Captain to make some fatal decisions. You might have heard this all before, but I want to show you why he’s been misrepresented.
Joseph Bruce Ismay was the owner of the White Star Line, the company that produced Titanic and her sister ships, Olympic and Britannic. He was 52 at the time of the sinking, a passenger on board; he travelled for the maiden voyages of all his company’s ships. Unlike Captain Smith, Thomas Andrews and many other unfortunate figures on board, Ismay survived the disaster, and received an unjust amount of backlash for it.
One of the main things the public blamed him for was his pride in labelling the Titanic unsinkable. While the Titanic was a textbook case of pride coming before a fall, it wasn’t just Ismay who had confidence in the ship. The Shipbuilder, a respectable trade journal, called her ‘practically unsinkable’; Captain Smith and Thomas Andrews also maintained this idea. In fact, Andrews was likely the one to convince the Captain of it in the first place. So while pride was a factor, the matter doesn’t wholly lie with Ismay.
It was said that Ismay cut corners with the safety measures of the ship in trying to save money, however this was also false. The aim with Titanic was to offer an ocean experience as luxurious as possible, and no expense was spared in carrying this out. It is true that they decided against carrying extra lifeboats to save decking space, but this was viewed as a reasonable choice at the time. The Board of Trade didn’t require ships to carry enough lifeboats for all passengers; besides, the disaster was such that adding more lifeboats wouldn’t necessarily have allowed more lives to be saved.
Not to mention that it was Ismay who personally ordered, following the disaster, that all his company’s ships carry lifeboats to accommodate for all people on board.
Another myth perpetuated about Ismay was that he forced the ship to go as fast as possible, overriding the Captain’s decisions by keeping it at full speed after the collision. This version of events was portrayed in the 1997 film and other retellings, however the whole speed debacle really wasn’t Ismay’s fault.
Firstly, speed wasn’t the aim in building the Titanic. Again, they built her to demonstrate luxury and opulence, not practicality or speed. Despite this, it’s possible that they were trying to arrive in New York on Tuesday night rather than Wednesday morning as planned. Captain Smith and Ismay had previously said such a feat was impossible, but a number of people said they had overhead both of them talking with either the Engineer or one another about achieving it. It would have been feasible, though, by the way, to have made it on Tuesday night; in fact, the Olympic had proven this by doing so prior to the disaster.
So here’s the thing. It was said that Ismay was the one pushing this goal of getting there on Tuesday, and that he essentially forced the Captain to go as fast as possible despite ice warnings. However, not only is there minimal evidence to support this, but Captain Smith probably didn’t need much encouragement to go faster. He was known for his love of speed; in fact, both Ismay and Andrews were on board for Olympic’s maiden voyage, when she arrived Wednesday morning, but neither were there for the trip when she arrived early on the Tuesday night.
Adding all of this up, it’s quite unlikely that there was any action on Ismay’s part to keep the Titanic at a faster pace than necessary.
Ismay was also attacked by the press for escaping from his own sinking ship, branded a coward for surviving the disaster. But his decision to get into a lifeboat was one made spontaneously, after he had done everything in his power to save others around him.
Third Officer Pitman, Annie Martin, Katherine Gold, Fifth Officer Lowe and Billy Carter – just to name a few – were able to testify that Ismay had been extremely helpful in loading and lowering the lifeboats. He urged women and children to get on board when they might not have done so otherwise – for example, a pair of stewardesses who had discounted themselves as crew members, and Edith Russell, whom he pretty much threw down a set of stairs to get her on Lifeboat 11. At one stage he was so anxious to load the lifeboats that Fifth Officer Lowe swore at him and told him to calm down. Also worth noting is the fact that he was wearing very little for the Atlantic ocean – only his pyjamas, an overcoat and slippers, so he was observed to be blue with cold.
As for getting into a lifeboat himself, he eventually found his way onto Collapsible C, the last lifeboat to be lowered on the starboard side, at 2am, just 20 minutes before the ship sank. It was Jack Thayer, 19 at the time of the disaster, who wrote in his memoirs that Ismay shoved his way into a lifeboat; however, not only was this account written 28 years after the disaster, but Thayer’s writings tended to overdramatise the events of the night. A number of witnesses backed up Ismay’s claims that when he got onto Collapsible C, it was in the process of being lowered, and there were no passengers in sight. The lifeboat was far from full, although more than twenty women, five crew members and a quartermaster had boarded it before Ismay. Once the boat was lowered, Ismay helped steer it, keeping his back to the sinking ship.
He really had no obligation to stay on board. To all intents and purposes, he was a passenger, not a crew member, least of all the Captain, who was traditionally required to go down with his ship. The backlash he got about being a coward is absolute rubbish. There’s nothing shameful in living, especially after he had done everything he could to ensure others’ survival. Honestly, what more could he have done to change things?
Nothing. Nothing, is the answer. In the words of Lord Mersey, who defended Ismay in the inquiries, “Had he not jumped [into the lifeboat] he would merely have added one more life, namely, his own, to the number of those lost.”
On board the Carpathia, Ismay stayed in the doctor’s cabin all the way to New York, refusing to eat or drink. He was unable to face the 37 women whose husbands had been lost, making contact only with the White Star Line’s offices in America.
It’s probable that Ismay felt unjustifiably guilty for surviving anyway, and the press did nothing to help him recover from the mental strain he would have been going through. He was labelled ‘J BRUTE Ismay’ by some papers, called reckless and a coward, plagued by unfounded rumours that he had dressed as a woman to get on a lifeboat, or that he developed a drug addiction following the disaster. In actual fact, both the British and American Inquiries cleared him of all personal wrongdoing when they closed.
Ismay retired from the White Star Line in 1913, although this had been planned prior to the sinking of the Titanic. He moved to a large property in County Galway, Ireland, and gradually receded from society. His reclusiveness probably made it easier for people to surmise and build the false character people recognised as J Bruce Ismay.
During his later life he made charitable donations to a number of sea-related foundations, inaugurated a ship, and oversaw the rebuilding of his house when the IRA burned it down in 1925. He died of a stroke in England in 1937.
I get that the public needed someone to blame for the tragedy. I get that the whole ordeal was messed up. I get that writers wanted to add drama by characterising him a certain way. But Ismay didn’t deserve the legacy he’s been given. It’s likely that, had he died on board the ship, he would have been named a hero like Captain Smith or Thomas Andrews.
So let’s give the guy a break. No, he wasn’t perfect. Yes, he made mistakes. But he also did a lot of good things, ones that we owe it to him to keep in mind.
Okay. I’ve said my piece. Sorry this was so long and unwieldy. If you’ve made it this far, that is unbelievable, thankyou. Oh and if you have any information to add, please do - I'm not a professional, so I'd love your input. :) Have a good anniversary of the Titanic – hopefully I’ve helped convince you to join the ranks of the J Bruce Ismay Defence Squad!

Leaning to the left? von National Library of Ireland on The Commons Über Flickr: Good morning campers and welcome to a new collection for the photostream! Today we have an image from the Michael S. Walker Collection showing one of my favourite theatres in Dublin, the Capitol Cinema and Theatre. Let us see what you can make of this one. And our contributors "made quite a lot of it" :) Apart from the extra info on the La Scala (later Capitol) Cinema itself, the dating of the 'Flight of the Doves' film helped us pinpoint this (previously undated) image, to c.1971. Given its near ubiquity on Irish TV in the 70s and 80s, many of us may have watched the Flight of the Doves on a smaller screen. But several of our contributors caught other shows on the Capitol's big screen - while taking in the interior decoration (including perhaps the the Clarke studio stained glass and woodwork from the Britannic). This made us wonder what became of its architectural salvage, when the cinema was demolished in 1972. (Indeed, salvaged works by the Clarke family have turned up in stranger places). In any event, while I may be stretching, it seems plausible that Walker knew this building's days were numbered - and captured it shortly before it was lost to the Dublin streetscape.... Photographer: Michael S. Walker Collection: Michael S. Walker Date: Likely c.1971 (film signage). Certainly before 1972 (demolition) NLI Ref.: NPA WALK7 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

Expert: It is unfortunate that policies otherwise deemed middle of the road and social democratic tend to be seen in Britain as offspring of a lunatic mother long held in indefinite detention at Her Majesty’s Pleasure.  But such is the nature of the current electioneering round, which has seen a source, most likely a disgruntled Labour hack, leak the manifesto of Jeremy Corbyn’s party ahead of its debate by the National Executive Committee. Even Labour co-chair, Andrew Gywnne, claimed that the policies outlined in the document amounted to something akin to Clement Atlee’s radical programme commenced in 1945.  “We think we’ve got a package of policies that are genuinely transformational.” The Tory attack dogs were already snarling in anticipation.  A conservative spokesman was boringly apocalyptic.  “This is a total shambles.  Jeremy Corbyn’s plans to unleash chaos on Britain have been revealed.”  The element of risk was a permanent feature, suggesting that a pure nutter was behind the Labour wheel.  “The commitments in this dossier will rack up tens of billions of extra borrowing for our families and will put Brexit negotiations at risk.” While Tory sharp shooters are already readying their weapons, the revelations, in of themselves, reveal a range of policies that many voters will find appealing.  What it does is overturn any vestiges of New Labour market optimism, outlining a program that goes back to a pre-Thatcher era where governments and social welfare were considered inseparable. All in all, this is Corbyn’s document.  Specific areas of the market will be brought back within the state orbit.  According to the document, a Labour government would have a publicly-owned energy supplier in every region of the country. The government would maintain and control the transmission and distribution grids.  This is also accompanied by what is said to be an immediate “emergency price cap” on energy bills to keep the average duel household fuel bill below £1,000 a year. Interventions in the market in dramatic fashion are also proposed with plans for nationalising the railways and the Royal Mail, measures that are already seeing a lady famous for declaring she was not for turning jolt with startled horror in her grave. On the point of the railways, which have become legendarily expensive and inefficient in the United Kingdom – at least relative to the continent – Corbyn has shown himself consistent: “private transport operators cannot be trusted with having passengers’ best interests at heart.” Touchy areas, such as the continuing albatross known as Trident, show that keeping Britain’s fatuous nuclear deterrent will continue with promised renewal, but that a review would take place permitting opposition to be voiced against that measure.  The draft document insists that Britain pursue a policy “guided by the values of peace, universal rights and international law.” Corbyn, in a manner deemed admirable and suicidal in equal measure, has firmly stated that he would never use the weapon if asked to push the trigger.  The nature of nuclear weapons is such that he may never be asked to consider the problem in any case.  But Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson has still insinuated with sinister import that Corbyn was far from being a “benign Islingtonian herbivore”. Unsurprisingly, the manifesto is heavy on its social improvement agenda, alleviating the plight of rough sleepers (4,000 reserve homes to be supplied), increasing construction of council and housing association houses – up 100,000; and generally going strong on the side of education (a phased abolition of tuition fees).  There are big portions to be handed out on the care and medical front (together totalling almost £8 billion), and a strong focus on trade union rights with the repeal of Trade Union Act. Given the tenor of the document, corporations are the designated villains of the piece. With the private sector having shown itself to be inadequate in the provision of decent services, and such sweet favours from the Tories as persistent cuts in the corporation tax rate since 2010, it is time to give back.  A levy is also on the books for firms “with high numbers of staff on very high pay”. Naturally, the penny pinching and service slashing Conservatives will find these measures outrageous, a lunatic’s charter which goes against the Britannic spirit of pioneer cruelties and self-serving worth. These are mean, lean times, and the Brexit negotiations are set to dig them in, making May mutate even further into a monster of distinction before European colleagues who see her as unrealistic and cosmically distant. (The infamous dinner with Jean-Claude Juncker confirmed the trend.) Corbyn, as per theme, faces the greatest opponents from within his party. Labour supporter “Chris”, with actual name undisclosed for fear of abuse, insists that “normal, good people, who aren’t political anoraks like me, don’t have time to read hundreds of articles on politics – they read a few articles and base the rest of their opinions on gut feeling and general trend of the headlines/social media.” So, enterprising political anorak Chris decided to go ahead collating the facts, suggesting that the “good” people had simply missed the point about their dear cardigan loving leader.  A lengthy list of accusations and observations follow, a spiky list suggesting, amongst others, Corbyn’s love of the Russians (always a danger for the patriotic Brit); his tendency to dislike Zionists yet prefer other extremists; and the sense that the Falkland Islands (or Malvinas) should be shared with Argentina. In the unlikely event that Corbyn can weather this storm, win over Scotland, and neutralise the conservative momentum, Britain will witness another sharp twist in the annals of populism.  May, however, is padding and bricking up her case for an electorate she already claims to have bagged. http://clubof.info/

I was a sixteen year old rookie sailor when joining my first ship, RMS Britannic, the last of the White Star Liners. Not much had changed for passengers since the RMS Titanic of the same company met its tragic end. Progress was unhurried back then. The Britannic ended its Atlantic crossings with several weeks cruising Mediterranean ports. Many of our populous Costa townships would have been fishing villages then. Progress in cruising since has been nothing short of astonishing. To be honest, I prefer the old ways but I can't stop progress. When passengers embarked on those ocean greyhounds there was a long drawn out wearying process of registration and embarkation to complete long before one was shown one's cabin. Thinking of Cruising? Hooked On Sailing the High Seas by Claudia Looi I never thought I would love cruising. Our first short voyage five years ago to the Bahamas was all about shows and meeting Disney characters. The second cruise with Norwegian Star last year was all about the destinations and taking a leap of faith to go further (not just Bahamas) and we were not hooked on sailing the high seas yet. However, the last cruise with Norwegian Sun had us.
