*4/10/2019

*henlo, i woke up around 12:30pm but it took me a while to get up because i felt very blah. i put a little bit of money into my checking yesterday so i wanted to buy something. i want to buy a dnd book but they’re expensive and i didn’t put that much money into my checking. i ended up buying fallen hero: rebirth on steam instead. it’s a text based rp game and i kept seeing ocs for it on my dash so i thought it might be a game i would like and it sure is. the main character that you play as is an ex-hero current villain living in an alternate timeline in which some people have superpowers. when you first start the game, the game tells you there are two love interests and that you can choose their genders, and i literally?? just picked random and the game made them both ladies which i’m ?? excited about. i’m using my self-insert oc that use in most games, but she’s usually a heroic character so playing her as a villain is interesting. i didn’t get too far into the game but i like it a lot

*today in the sims, hestia became a teenager. she looks like her aunt hera more than her mom, like she has her aunt’s round body type instead of demeter’s twig body lmao. she looks absolutely nothing like her father which is honestly a good thing. he’s not horrible to look at, but his head is very large and his body is very skinny. in other news, artemis is now a global superstar despite retiring a long ass time ago. she became famous on tweeting four times a day every day since retirement. now that zeus has passed away, his twin brother poseidon is next any time now and i’m so sad. it’s the end of generation 5.... finally.

7. what’s a negative thing about your character that you enjoy writing?

okay well not really negative but i love how pure-teenage-awkward he is. pathetically awkward. it’s not just girls ( although put him in front of his crush and watch him make an embarrassment of himself ), it’s just that he is and what he is is sort of pathetically A Mess.

on a more serious note. jim thinks he knows what’s best for everyone. long before all this started, his teacher/mentor-figure dubs him ‘ young atlas, ’ and that’s really what it comes down to. he believes he can, and should, carry everyone’s burden, and he will go behind their back and do anything in his power do this. he uses his authority ( “ the amulet chose me ” // “ i’m the one who destroyed your soul ” // “ i can’t lose any more of you ” ) to keep the people he cares about safe, to protect them. his heart’s in the right place, but what he ends up doing is needlessly risking himself and hurting those he cares about even more. he takes responsibility for things he didn’t do, puts himself directly in danger.

at first he takes on these burdens, takes care of the people he loves, in being close to them – i mean, this is the boy who makes his mother breakfast & to-go meals for work before he leaves for school. but he learns to take on their burdens by pushing them away, by building that cold wall of distance and responsibility. he truly does think everything is his responsibility.

and he gets to lying, to keeping secrets – he has to, of course, in order to protect the hidden world beneath his feet. but it also makes him cunning. it’s incredible character development.

10. what’s the hardest thing for you to write?

i try to be able to write everything; i went to arts school for this shit, and burnt out in arts school over this shit, and found the passion again & used it to pursue publication. with jim, the challenge is to balance his softness with his fierceness & his endurance, his cold compassion with his warm compassion, his sense of responsibility with his just want to have a good time, get by, get at least a b on my exams, play video games with my best friend & dream about riding a motorbike, andd literally the stars with the world around him & his ordinary teenage world.

24. what’s your favorite AU?

spoilers for the season finale. for jim, undoubtedly any au where jim goes into the darklands with a half-enemy on a shaky truce – with strickler or angor rot. the dynamic between the three of them as the series progresses fascinates me, the endless shifting of alliances, truces, the mortal danger each of them poses to the other, right down to jim waiting in the back of strickler’s car with full intent to kill him.

jim locks his friends out, closes a tremendous vault door between them, crying. but the trollhunters team meant for his to be a bittersweet hero’s journey, and as season 1 comes to a close, jim is at the middle step of campbell’s hero’s journey, the step of ordeal, death, and rebirth, the point where he gets his first taste of the change he’ll have to face again at the climax. ( i have a post in the works about this tbh the campbell’s hero thing fascinates me. )

so he cannot bring his friends. sure, they might find him in season 2 – they probably will. but he can certainly bring his enemies. and he’s going into unknown territory, into an underworld where trollhunters before him have fallen, hardened warriors of stone ( literally ) and decades, centuries even, of training. he is going to face gunmar, the beast of the night, ( the eater of flesh and chewer of tongue thanks to the book rip ), a troll so powerful and so dangerous he had to be locked away in the darklands to keep both safe and whose return is so feared that the darklands cannot be opened more than a pinch so as to not risk freeing him. our boy goes in alone, but imagine if he didn’t. imagine if he went in with someone he can’t trust on a personal level, but he can thanks to the principle that the enemy of my enemy is my friend.

52. what’s a trope or plot you think is overdone in roleplay?

i dunno man i love cliches like man cliche me the Funk Up. plus i’m still kind of here in my tiny little bubble in the far corner of tungle rp so i can’t really say i’ve found much that’s repetitive yet

✔: A plot you would love to play out with your character

Probably not news but I’ve been saying forever that I want Caoilhain to go through the second half of the Heroine’s Journey. It’s just hard to find someone who wants to RP a “redemption” arc rather than a drama fest of angst.

To elaborate a bit, because it’ll be hard to understand where I’m coming from without this, The Heroine’s Journey is an alternative narrative plot structure to your standard Hero’s journey. @flutiebear made one of the best analyses on the subject that I can really find on the internet that I’ll totally link when I can put in hyperlinks.

In general your basic plot will follow the standard hero’s journey. Ordinary world > Call to action > Refusal of the call > Meeting of the Mentor > Crossing the Threshold > Tests, Allies, Enemies > Approach to inmost Cave > Ordeal > Reward >The Road back > Ressurection > The Elixer. This is a somewhat more indepth version that what we’re usually taught in school and while I could spend time elaborating on the differences that’s not what this post is for. I might if anyone really wants to listen to that nerd rant. The point, really, is to note that the Hero’s journey is almost always a battle with some kind of external force. While this can happen in RP with Story arcs and whatnot, it’s very difficult to structure a character’s journey like that for any real length of time. While many people try, and sometimes succeed, the Heroine’s Journey feels like a better alternative to me because it is primarily about an inner journey and transition rather than external forces that make them.

In contrast to a Hero’s journey the Heroine’s journey is thus: The Illusion of a Perfect World > The Betrayal or Realization > The Awakening, or Preparing for the Journey > The Descent, or Passing Through the Gates of Judgement > The Eye of the Storm > Stage 4 and 5: Redux > Death: All Is Lost > Support > Rebirth: The Moment of Truth > Full Circle—Return to a Perfect World, Stage 4 and 5 can sometimes redux many. many times before the desired endgoal is reached, which, I believe, it what makes it most suitable for writings of an episodic nature or RP. While a hero is built up through repeated victories and gains his tools through his journey, the Heroine tends to start out with all these things and have them repeatedly fail her until she is stripped bare and ready for the transformation. Another thing I like about a Heroine’s Journey is that it sets itself up for more. Traditionally at the end of a Hero’s journey the protagonist is now the absolute best at everything and can go no further. The Heroine has gone through this great inner journey and changed for the better, but she is always able to take another.

So without Further ado, I’ll explain how this relates for Caoil.

The Illusion of a Perfect World

The Heroine is happily ensconced in a “perfect world” that may not be so perfect. Rather than acknowledging these flaws the Heroine relies on coping mechanisms or external objects to make it through.

Caoil was born the moment I began to play her due to my somewhat misguided belief in how I thought saplings acted in the wee beginnings of Gw2. While I was never one who wanted to play the oddly popular, completely ignorant Sylvari sapling stereotype, Caoilhain was still very naive. She was overly kind and helpful. She believed the best in everyone and everything. She understood danger and was capable enough to keep herself out of obvious ones, but she was still woefully unworldly.

When Len left her for the Nightmare Court she clung even harder to this belief that love and kindness would heal the most damaged of souls. Namely the soul of Zephel, whom she had fallen in sapling love with.

Caoil was not blind to the fact that Zephel and Len were falling further and further away from her but she believed her love and kindness could save them.

The Betrayal or Realization

An external force shatters the Heroine’s perfect world and she is forced to choose between passive victimhood and direct action. This stage is not so much about the change to occur, but the motivation which causes it.

Len left Caoilhain in the middle of the night to spare her feelings and told Caoil that she still loved her. Zephel, on the contrary, tried to kill her and told her she was too stupid to live. While she had tried for them both to nurture and understand, it hadn’t worked either time. The Nightmare could not be defeated with simple kindness. Love was not the most powerful force in the universe. If she stayed this way, she was going to be hurt and used for the rest of her life.

For narrative fluency, while all the enemies are meant to appear at the end of this stage we’ll call the enemies that appear here the conflict in Caoilhain between her softer, more merciful personality, and the harshness of her more ruthless and determined side.

The Awakening, or Preparing for the Journey

The Awakening is about the choosing to change and the mental strength necessary to do so.

This is about the time Caoil felt the pull of her Wyld Hunt. I had always toyed with the idea of giving her have a Wyld Hunt but I was wary of the one I wanted to give her bc it seemed pretty morbid and couldn’t really be completed. (tbh I always expected there to be some kind of reveal on what Nightmare was and maybe a way it could be cleansed. Joke’s on me.)

While many of Caoil’s friends and associates at the time cautioned her not to take any hasty steps, She knew she could neither return to the naivety of yesterday nor ignore her calling. So Caoil sets out to begin fighting the Nightmare with Skoryy at her back as her first ally and supporter. This is also where she joins The Inflorescence.

I feel like it’s important to note here, that Skoryy fits the literal definition of the Heroine’s Journey’s Support role quite well. He has never once really come in to save the damsel in distress but he has always built Caoilhain up so she can make choices of her own volition and use her own power to wade her way through the circumstances of her life.

The Descent, or Passing Through the Gates of Judgement

So the Betrayal provides the motivation to change and the Awakening makes the choice to change. This stage is where the actual changing occurs.

This is the point where Caoil goes from a bubbly, helpful sapling into the sarcastic, foul mouthed mercenary that she became today.

The Decent is one of the stages that will be repeated throughout the narrative. (And in RP where all of the various story arcs one can go through in two years gets shoved) Caoil must face her fears. Her fears of being unlovable. Her fears of becoming a monster. Her fears of the duties that she, herself, has put upon her. But most of all, the one Caoilhain fears the most, her fear of being useless. Some of these remain unresolved, but that’s okay. The Heroine’s journey isn’t about perfection. It’s about change and strength.

In this stage all of her coping mechanisms and all of weapons she assembled and prepared in the last stage will be for nothing. They prove ineffective. She is neither able to kill Len or Zephel as she had promised, nor can she make headway with her Wyld Hunt. Cathal builds defenses to stop the Courtiers form getting in and they march right in anyways. Caoil hunts down her enemies and makes plans and traps, they prevail through them and bring her down anyways. No matter how prepared she is she is never able to get a leg up.

The Eye of the Storm

The danger is passed for now and the Heroine gets a bit of breathing room to process what;’s just happened. She realizes, hey, wow, I am stronger than I thought.

Caoil got this one when Skoryy and Oriaen sat her down after a particularly nasty fight and told her, “this needs to stop”. Bc of my reluctance to really engage in serious plots at the time, and some srs bsns going on in my life, Caoil was mostly going to social events and hanging out with her peers.

Stage 4 and 5: Redux

Stages four and five can be repeated as often as necessary. These repetitions continue to strip away the Heroine’s coping mechanisms and pre-conceived notions so she can learn to rely on herself.

The moment that, during a confrontation with Zephel, he told her she had done nothing wrong and had never deserved the way he treated her was probably the most important of this time period because it is the one that allowed Caoil to, perhaps not forgive Zephel, but move passed the hurt of his rejection.

Death: All Is Lost

The Heroine has now been stripped of all her weapons and must face down impossible odds. She is powerless and all of the agency in the world that she has built cannot save her. She accepts defeat.

This stage began with the Inflorescence’s Treaty with the Court of Thorns and solidified when Zainerys fell to Nightmare. Effectively everything she put her faith into had failed. She had fallen to further depths of depravity than she had ever wanted, with nothing to show for it. She leaves the Inflorescence, her Wyld Hunt, and even to some extent Skoryy and her friends behind.

This got extended as I didn’t really play Caoil very much between VINE and NSA. Sure, she did a few important things during this time, joined the Whispers, worked with the Wardens, but she didn’t ever really reach the level of Character development necessary to get to the next stage of the journey.

Even when she eventually finishes her Wyld Hunt it was not through letting herself trust and befriend others again. It is because she opportunistically sought the resources and people that could get the job done. She kills Zephel alone. She manipulates Caimhuel into becoming Len’s weakness. She makes The Sandford Cabal and the Tryrian Apple Company put forth all of the effort and manpower. She lets Kats strike the blow she was meant too. Caoilhain failed her Wyld Hunt because of cowardice, because she had accepted that she is nothing and she cannot do what she meant too. This is her lowest point.

Support

The Heroine is not, in this stage, saved from her lowest point by any other character. She must prove to herself her own strength of will and courage and begin to trust others again. I believe Caoilhain has started this stage but I don’t believe she’s yet been able to surpass it.

As Victoria Schmidt referenced in Flutiebear’s analysis “she can’t be betrayed again because she has her own strength and self-realization that can’t be taken away from her.” when she exits the Support Stage.

When Caoil joined Nexxus Solutions and began to trust the people there she hesitantly stepped into this stage. As she and Elidryn grew closer in particular, she started to think that, perhaps, life didn’t suck so much and she wasn’t such a piece of shit. What she had called stupidity, he called selflessness, and that was really the kind of praise she was looking for all along. She counciled Basrath even though they hadn’t gotten along well in TSC. She made friends with Reed and re-connected with Cu. She and Skoryy got married and in that she spoke again to quite a few of her former comrades she hadn’t planned too.

However Caoilhain still, ultimately, rejected Sagart as a mentor because she didn’t trust him. She still is not self-actualized enough to ask for help or accept it from a source whose motivations she can’t be sure of.

Getting tot he actual question (lol) what I’d LIKE to do is give Caoil that open, trusting mentor role with whom she can establish a strong relationship. A mentor that will not tell her what to do, or try to save her, but rather one that makes her think and begin to save/trust herself. Along with giving Caoil a nice, formal set of skills as opposed to the grab bag of talents she has now.

Rebirth: The Moment of Truth

Because the Nightmare Court has been so key in all of Caoilhain’s fears and past battles I would like her to eventually come back to it for one more fight. Only this time one against a set of NPCs and a plot so she can finally win and prove to herself that she is in fact, competent enough to defeat this particular enemy.

Not that I ever want her to get back into the Anti-Nightmare Vigilante scene. It’s not a place I find particularly inspiring anymore.

But it would be a rather nice neat ribbon tie on this part of her life, wouldn’t it?

Full Circle—Return to a Perfect World

And thus the Heroine’s journey ends right where it started, only this time she is stronger, sharper, and more self assured than she was when she went in. There’s more to come, but now she can face it confident in her own strength.

I think for Caoilhain the perfect end to this particular cycle would be to take on a student of her own. However I’d be happy with simply returning Caoilhain to her original theme of healing, love and kindness that I began with.
