The temperature had dropped since he went out foraging, though he was sure he hadn’t been gone long. Even with fresh tinder the sparks from his flint were too stubborn to catch.
Flick.
Finally. The damp in the tinder smoked and spat, but that one, tiny spark clung to life, glowing like a fairy’s coal. He fed it more of the dry grass, nursed it from spark to flame between his hands, from flame to crackling fire. The light picked out the trunks ringing the clearing, like the golden bars of a cage, and—
Ashe’s scream rang out from the forest.
