What’s Usagi’s relationship like with each of his siblings? Are they close? Do they know about him and Leo, and how Leo treats him?

If so, how do they feel about it, and do they/have they try/tried to stop it or do something about it?

Chizu: they were never really like. CLOSE close, but they get along the best overall. Both Chizu and Usagi repress and don't often talk about stuff that's bothering them, but that kinda means they'll never really pass that final barrier to BE close. Plus, Chizu blamed herself for Usagi leaving, so there's that thin sprinkle of fear/sadness that hangs. Very awkward, the two of them. Chizu knows about him and Leo (Leo told her about it probably before he even ever said 'hello' to her, lol) but she doesn't have much idea of what goes on. She thinks that Leo is a bit pushy, and feels a tad awkward when he constantly begs her for Usagi stories. If Chizu knew, she'd wage hell and earth against Leo.

Ishida: Ishida always tried to be a good brother and very vehemently defended Usagi if Tomoe was giving him crap or something. Usagi often treated Ishida as a bit 'fragile' which would annoy Ishida, but they get along very well and love eachother. Ishida tries to always be supportive, and he trusts Usagi. Which. Causes issues. Ishida kinda feels uncomfortable with the relationship, but he trusts Usagi when Usagi tells him that it's fine or something along those lines. So he doesn't get involved. He's kinda like 'well ig some people are like that? Plus we haven't seen Usagi in years, he just changed a lot. That's all. I trust him to tell me the truth'. If Ishida knew, He'd wage war. He wouldn't stop defending Usagi until he was 20 ft under.

Kenichi: they were close when they were kids! Now, Kenichi and him are still close but like. Kenichi really wants it to be like 'old times' and that. That's just not happening. He feels very responsible for Usagi, like he has to defend and protect him (white knight syndrome anyone?). Kenichi is often the one making plans for all the brothers to hang out ('no turtle' days, if you will) and Usagi... when they work out, he likes them. Kenichi HATES Leo and is very very sure that he's doing harm to Usagi, but he can't PROVE it and also Leo would snap him like a twig. Kenichi is working on trying to help Usagi in any way he can, though! Varying levels of success.

Riko- She was the one who saw him when he ran away. She was always very vehement that he wasn't dead. They didn't talk much, she was more often around Mari but they got along OK :] she likes Leo well enough, she gets along with Mikey better.

Mari- she was very emotionally wise even at a young age, so she caught onto Usagi struggling very often. They enjoyed eachothers company and Mari missed him a lot. Mari doesn't like Leo a huge amount, but she's shy in general. Her and Donnie get along very well tho :] autism buds 🤝

Jotaro: Usagi tries to be present now but its awkward and Usagi just. Has a lot of baggage and it's hard for him to bond. Jotaro loves Usagi, he finds him fun and nice and very patient. Jotaro also LOVESSSSS Leo, Leo is so fun and always plays games with him and he gets to call Leo dad (tho Usagi doesn't like it :((((() and Jotaro loves it!!! He's sad he can't stay with Leo all the time!

Usagi's family loves him, and he loves them. Just... a lot of baggage. And Leo made sure to dig his fingers into every single soft spot until you would be able to see his fingerprints indented in it, if you get what I mean.

Boy, this is the kind of thing I would lose my shit for if she did in fact give her life for this.

And before anyone yells at me, "IT IS A SHOW FOR CHILDREN" great fine whatever, it was recommended to me as a 30-something lesbian with a mortgage and adult tastes in media. I was not asked to evaluate it as a child. (nor would I probably take that commission except maybe in an odd fun one-off)

Anyway, I know she cannot die, and while MOST protagonists have plot armor, the skill really comes in how deft one makes the plot armor. If a story is good enough it doesn't bother me that the protagonist is always safe. I have to feel it isn't so, though. I just finished reading a book that was in a lot of ways just fun fantasy story, I'm not talking about life-changing literature here, but when they threatened the protag, though I knew they wouldn't kill him, it felt 'dangerous' to me.

I THINK part of why my brain resists these sort of moments, is that, like here, they are often SET UP as "Ahiru is making this grand sacrifice and Usagi is told "NO DON'T DO IT USAGI YOU'LL DIE" and so the narrative is drawing ATTENTION to it, in a way that something like a split-second decision or something going wrong does not draw attention to. So it can be galling to me for a narrrative to tell me, "You are really emotionally invested in this, be really sad" and it's like I have a fucking 12 year old pointing a gun at me and it's not even fucking loaded. Big talk, what are you gonna do with that?

How long have you been creating works in fandom spaces? How long have you been active in the SM fandom?

If reading fanfic counts as being active in the fandom, I've been active, on and off, for a little over 20 years, but I didn't actually start writing fanfic until 2 years ago.

What type(s) of creative works do you usually make? (fanfics, digital art, cosplay)

Fanfics are my #1 contribution, but I also crochet. I made @linlamont's Sailor Rex plush based on her amazing artwork for her adorable story "Treasures", and I am currently working on a custom Sailor Rex for my 6 yo daughter. There are plans for a Tuxedo Rex and Tuxedo Kamen

What do you enjoy about creating for the SM fandom?

I love the sense of community and making friends within the fandom. Discussing and theorizing all things Sailor Moon is one of my favorite things! Plus, there is just so much to explore, both in canon and fanon

Are you strictly UsaMamo or do you create for other pairings as well?

I wrote a Kunz/Venus fic for Heavenly Pearl's/@kaleidodreams' first ever Rare Pair week, but I otherwise exclusively write for UsaMamo. Who knows, maybe I'll be inspired to create for another ship in the future. Never say never!

What inspires you to create works for Usagi and Mamoru?

The emotions! Everything these kids go through is dark, scary, intense, etc etc, and I love to explore how it affected them, how they're feeling in the moment, and how Usagi and Mamoru support each other through it.

Do you tend to work on multiple projects (WIPs) simultaneously or try to finish one at a time?

Ideally, I would work on one WIP at a time, but with my ongoing story Once More, with Feeling!, I always have multiple going on. While I normally don't mind putting OMwF aside for a OS or two, I haven't updated it in almost a year, which I feel really bad about, so I am trying to put any new ideas on hold right now so I can get Chapter 13 done. OMwF will eventually update, I promise!

Do you prefer large projects (chaptered fics, webtoons/zines, highly detailed art) or small projects (one-shots or simple art)?

I love how much of a story can be explored and fleshed out in a chaptered fic, but, for fans, they can be daunting to start reading if you aren't there from the very beginning (depending on length), and there is always that ever present nemesis: time. As a writer, I like the regular engagement with the community that posting new chapters allows, but writing as I go can be very stressful, especially when motivation just isn't striking. For OSs, I love that ability to focus on one small part of the characters' lives without needing to generate a lot of backstory or lore. Will I do another Chaptered fic once OMwF is finished? Probably, I do want to continue into R, but I will hopefully take everything I've learned working on OMwF (it's my very first ever fanfic!) into the sequel so I'm a little more prepared.

Are there any common themes, situations, tropes, or mediums in your work?

Angst and Romance are probably the most common as I love the emotional impact the angst imparts and how Usagi and Mamoru support each other through it. Honestly, I find the original anime (and the manga to a lesser extent) a bit emotionally stunted, so I absolutely love fics that elicit emotions, in me, either happy, sad or anything in between!, and I strive to do that for my readers. With any luck, I succeeded!

Is there anything you haven’t explored artistically and would like to try?

If I could draw, I would totally do art. I am in awe of what artists can create through their medium and would love to be able to visually see what so many of us use words to describe, but, alas, I'll stick to crocheted dinosaurs with odangos! Regarding writing, I have more OSs in mind for stories and ideas I haven't explored yet, and maybe I'll actually learn some restraint and create chaptered fics that aren't 12+ chapters long at 5k-12k words each. Anything is possible! (Except for me and art. Not gonna happen)

The crux of the drama, finally, is that they were "protecting the princess," and I guess the inners got thrown into that for free for some reason, except for the part where they got powerful attacks thrown at them to scare them away or whatever.

I would like to argue once again that using their words instead of physically attacking or running away from the inners would have been not only a more reasonable course of action to establish this as a Problem but also a lot less frustrating to watch and more emotionally effective? Like all of the "Usagi is sad and windswept because Haruka and Michiru are avoiding her" stuff would have been so much easier to care about if I knew why they were doing that and had any faith that the reason made sense.

Also since Usagi is the main character it did NOT feel like Uranus and Neptune were Handling it Themselves while scaring away the younger senshi from getting too close to the danger, it felt like they were spying on the younger senshi while THEY handled it and then making a weird fucking scene about it and leaving.

Monday...I’ll hate this Sept. 24th Forever.

This late afternoon on my facebook account, I heard the unfortunate and saddest news concerning one of my longtime best friends “Chrissie” from her fiance/longtime boyfriend Nathan...Chrissie had been in the hospital due for a week to a weekend for a sort of cold flu infection and her longtime bad health concerning heart issues she’s had from her family’s side of the family on her late Mother’s side.  Nathan told me the bad news that, sadly...Chrissie passed away yesterday on Sunday in the hospital due to respiratory heart issues and from being sick from that possible cold or cold virus she had.

I knew Chrissie for years since our love for the love metal band H.I.M. brought us together to cross paths on the HIM fan club online on MySpace during the early 2000′s MySpace days when we crossed paths on social media. We kept in touch, via AIM on AOL/YIM Yahoo Instant Messager, exchange snail mail addresses to become goth/love metal/HIM pen pals. We had so much in common with art, music, the love for The Nightmare Before Christmas, Tim Burton, Horror Movies, The Crow, Metal Love music, the band HIM naturally, Jackass/Viva La Bam MTV Series, being both foodies, crafters/knitters, and art lovers. Always snail mail packages without warning to each other.

The love we had for stupid shows like Jackass, Viva La Bam, South Park, then anime classics to even Pee-Wee’s Playhouse and Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure the movie. She’d always lose her shit whenever I’d randomly mail her drawings or illustrations I’d make for her portraits of her favorite musicians, artists, icons she adored like Ville Valo of HIM, Edgar Allan Poe, Janis Joplin, to even collages of elemental nature/witch-themed spooky Halloween things she got a kick out of and would plaster her walls with them all hung up, sending me pics via social media and on our blogs/social media accounts for me to see. We both were cat lovers, owned/had cats. Gave each other encouragement and advice all the time, even calling another to just at random cheer the other up when we’d read a MySpace or LJ post to know one of us had a shitty day and clearly needed some cheering up or someone to talk to/vent to just to feel better. As we’d often joke, “Christine! Chrissie! You are the Frank Iero of MCR to my Gerard Way!” “Cassandra! Cass-Cass! You are the Gerard Way of MCR to my Frank Iero!!! Never let us change!!!!”

Two Goth Shitty-Teen Young Adult College Girls who lived across the country in the states from each other who never met in person/IRL connected/bonded in friendship over the same hobbies, music, art, and band...WTF right? I suppose our friendship made sense to the two of us and those in our lives who knew/know us personally.

One time after the hell I had gone through in my past of ending a bad relationship with my then ex-boyfriend in 2007 (I had left him after a summer visiting him out of state where he and his family lived after things ended very badly between him and I concerning...him cheating on me and him having been verbally/physically abusive towards me.) When I had arrived home in CA, Chrissie had mailed me a package. Opening it, I discovered band shirts of MCR and HIM she had gotten me when she had attended in PA or NY the Projeckt Revolution Tour earlier that summer, as well as sending me zines, art supplies to make a ‘recover after leaving asshole loser ex’ zine journal, junk food of my favorite treats, soda, band merch from Hot Topic of HIM things she got me. And even a giant Throw blanket Gothic Fairy for my June Birthday. (Which I still have to this day.) She even had once surprised me once Christmas with a HIM alarm classic clock that I’ll always cherish and mixtape cds of our favorite Helsinki Love Metal, Metal, and Gothic Bands and rare HIM songs as a surprise gift out of the blue she had given me. In exchange, I always sent her awesome stuff in the same things.

We’d send each other surprises always. We always talked about once we got our adult-life college shit together done with, both of us saving up with our boyfriends/long term life-mates/guys, and all of us having our legal passports ready, that we’d both jetset from our home turfs in KS and CA to duo group travel together to vacation in Japan, Canada, the UK, and Europe together to go to Estonia and Finland which was our geek goth girl goals. As well as her coming out to CA on the one day I’d plan for my one-day future goth-geek themed wedding, asking her to be apart of my bridesmaids in my wedding party since we’ve known another for ages/years as longtime HIM-besties. 

Right now, I don’t know really how to feel about this news, I’m devastated and just sad knowing Chrissie’s not here anymore and poor Nathan, what he’s going through with everything along with Chrissie’s family in KS and PA. I’m going to miss Chrissie, and our once a week/weekend online and skype/phone conversations/talks/chats. I hope where ever she is now that she’s alright. XO

When she did want affection, she would have trouble having confidence to just straight up ask to cuddle, worried that she’ll annoy you

But you’d be able to tell when she did, because she would follow you around and try to keep your attention on her

She’d be the most loyal and trusting best friend

She’s definitely the mum friend when she’s in a group, always trying to make sure no one gets into trouble and always checking if everyone’s eaten

She would be so friendly and trustworthy, probably spends a lot of time with you on free days and go out on little dates together

But she is so protective of the ones she loves

If anyone tried to hurt you or offend you, she would be so angry

Would become more mad than you at the person

Just don’t come between her and her best friend

After having a really tough day, or maybe missing her father, the thing she would adore more than anything is a really long cuddle session with you

You two would flop onto the couch and snuggle into one another, talking about your day was and pressing kisses on one another every now and then

You’d probably end up falling asleep, because her cuddles are so relaxing

Brushes her hand through your hair and scratches your head like a cat

Her favourite way to cuddle would just be lying next to each other while facing each other

She would like it because she can see your face and can cuddle as close to your as possible while still being able to kiss your face

D - Domestic

She’s such a mum, she would literally act like a wife the day you moved in together

She wouldn’t be incredibly fast to want to move in with you

Like maybe one and a half years together before you both even started thinking about it

I feel like she would love house plants, and also fish

You’d have a huge fish tank in the lounge room, and sometimes she would just sit and stare at them swimming around

She knows how to cook, so she would mainly cook the meals

Probably ends in a food fight though with cracked eggs on both of your heads and Usagi complaining about the mess

She seems incredibly mature, so I think she would handle a breakup in the most healthy way possible

But if you didn’t give her a proper reason as to why you wanted to split up, she would get really upset and possibly struggle to act friendly with you again

If she broke up with you, she would feel so guilty about it, even if she had a really good reason to

She has such a big heart, so making you feel upset would crush her

She would dream about marrying you

She would be so gentle with you both physically and emotionally during the first few months of the relationship

But as time went on, she would become more confident and less careful in her actions

But she would always win, because she’s a climber with incredibly strong arms and legs

Sometimes she would run up behind you and jump onto your back in a surprise piggyback ride while laughing

Emotionally, she would always remain so gentle and understanding when it came to how you were feeling

Your comfort would always come first in every situation, so she would constantly check if you were feeling okay

Hugs 24/7

She can never get enough of them

Especially reunion hugs, like if one of you went away for a few days or even when one of your arrived back home from work, she would always love it when you run up to each other and jump into each other’s arms

Any chance she could get, she would wrap her strong arms around you and squeeze you as tight as possible

Her hugs are so sweet though

Every time she gave you one, it would send butterflies through your stomach

But it would also make you feel so comforted

She would treat the phrase like it would be committing her life to you

It would be such a big deal for both of you when she said it

But she would say it during a really sad moment actually

She had a bad day, being yelled at by her boss at work and it was also the anniversary of her father’s death, as well as her car broke down on the way home

She would come over to your house with tears down her face, searching for some comfort from you

You would make her a hot drink and sit on the couch for hours, just letting her cry into your chest and comforting her

She would realize then how much she loved and trusted you

Seeing you become so protective and concerned about her would make her realize that she wanted to spend her life with you in that moment

So it would just slip out, and you would say it back without hesitation

She would be somewhere in the middle in terms of jealousy

She wouldn’t be overly jealous, because she trusts you a lot

But if someone was too get a little too comfortable, she would put herself between you two

If you were to flirt with someone else, it would upset her more than anything else

She’s confident in your love for her, so most of the time she wouldn’t ever think to worry about being jealous

But if something was to happen, I think her reaction would just be to pull you away from the person she’s jealous of

Random little kisses all the time

Even when just passing each other in the house, she would give you a quick peck on the lips

Her kisses are really delicate and gentle

Like she very much takes her time when it comes to loving you

Usagi loves the thought of having a happy family that she can look after and watch grow up

So if you have little siblings/nephew or nieces/cousins, she would literally melt every time she saw them

She has such strong motherly vibes, I just think all kids would love her so much

M - Morning

(How are mornings spent with them?)

She usually wakes up early and goes on a jog or to the gym

So most of the time she wouldn’t bother you and just leave you sleeping

But if she got back and you still hadn’t woken up, she would have a quick shower then crawl over you and stroke your face softly until you woke

Would sometimes wake you up with a hundred kisses all over your face

On the days you wake up early with her, you would go jogging or to the gym together to spend the time with one another

But then you would get back home and laze around for the next few hours

I feel like she wouldn’t often stay up really late, so most nights she would be asleep before you

But it often takes her a while to fall asleep, so most nights you would stay up with her and talk and kiss

Would probably read a book before sleeping sometimes

The nights she would stay up light would be only due to you watching a movie together or if you went out on a late date

But most nights with Usagi would be really chill and cuddly

(When would they start revealing things about themselves?)

She would take a while to open up, because she has an introverted personality

But when she eventually does, she becomes so much more confident in showing her affection for you and acting like herself

Opening up about deep subjects wouldn’t be a problem for her after a while, because she would love and trust you with anything

Like if something was bothering her, she wouldn’t hesitate to let you know

Unless she thought she was being a bother, which could never happen

Sometimes she would worry that she was reflecting her problems onto you

So you would have to reassure her that her feelings and worries always come first

She’s super chill, nothing could ever anger her

She handles most situations incredibly maturely, so she wouldn’t have a reason to get mad really

In terms of arguments between you two, she prefers to see it from your side as well, so she can understand why you might be upset

She would always have a solution to frustrating issues

The only reason she would ever get really upset was if you stayed out later than usual and you didn’t tell her

If your phone died, she would understand

But if you just didn’t think to let her know, she would get angry mostly just out of worry

Her favourite memory would be when you went to a cute little coffee shop together

I know it sounds simple, but she remembers every single detail of the date

It was one of her most fun days with you, and you also went to a park together and had a little picnic

Just little simple memories like that would always stick with her

Because I feel like she would value the small things in life that make her happy

She’s actually very protective

Just in terms of your safety though

Like if you were even in the smallest bit of danger, her mother instincts would explode

That’s why she gets annoyed when you don’t tell her when you would be home longer than usual

When in public, she would never let go of your hand

She’s more of the silent protector than the shout in someone’s face protector

Like if she thought someone was going to hurt you, she wouldn’t drag you away without saying anything

But if they kept testing you she would probably kick them in the stomach

I think she would like it if you got protective of her

She would appreciate if you did the same to her, because you should always protect each other equally in a relationship

She would put so much effort into everything

Every anniversary would honestly feel like a mini Christmas

Would buy and make you way too many gifts

You’d be so spoiled by her

On dates, she always tries to find really exquisite things for you to do together

Like you’d never be able to guess where she suggested to go next

It could literally range from a huge aquarium to a really fancy candle lit dinner together

She was full of surprises when it came to pleasing you

Sometimes she can act a bit too much like a mother to you

Like you feel like sometimes she forgets that you are an adult and you wish to do things yourself

It would make you feel bad more than anything, because she would try to do everything for you

Sometimes she would also tire herself out

She seems like she would be a workaholic, so you would have to tell her to stop working and come to bed

Pushes herself a bit too hard, which a lot of the time ended with her having a cry in your arms from stress

V - Vanity

She wouldn’t be too concerned

Like she would at least want to look decent before leaving the house

But in general she wouldn’t really care

If you were to go out on a date though, she would put so much effort into making herself look gorgeous for you

So mainly only on special occasions would she be really concerned with her looks

But just like everyone else, she can sometimes get insecure about her body

In general: Rick x Negan, Buffy x Spike, Usagi x Seiya, Jon x Dany, Prue x Andy, Hannibal x Will, Lightning x Snow, Harry x Hermine (sorry 😂). But I’m only very invested in Regan, the others are just ships I imagined while watching but never read or wrote anything about it. 

On here: I love all my ships! But of course everyone has favorites, right? Most important are: Kevin x Rick, Charlotte x Rick, Ivy x Rick, Nahvee x Rick, Em x Rick. But it always depends on how much you write and how you click on your style. I also loved Beth x Rick a lot but sadly our Beth is not active anymore 🥺 it always depends on your portrayal and how we click so everything is possible to develop ♥︎

Favorite threads

So many... I love everything drama and angst related. There was an angsty scene with Kevin I really enjoyed, also the new threads with Em are so much fun. Ivys thread in the bar where they fight and make out is incredible and Nahvees sex scene in the office was hot af 👀 Charlotte gives me all the fluffy feelings which my Rick needs for his comfort and Beth introduced me into topics I didn’t even know I like to write (bad Rick hehe). But I love all my threads otherwise I wouldn’t write them, angst is just my favorite especially when it turns into dirty smut.

Oh god YES. Some people would probably say I’m TOO invested in rp since I really can’t distance myself from Ricks feelings properly. If he’s sad, I’m sad. If he’s happy, I’m happy. That’s why drama or angst threads influence me so much that I sometimes can’t sleep because I wanna solve the situation first, or when his heart gets broken it feels like my own breakup even if we planned it. But I want this pain and the love coming with it! I just try to distance myself more and don’t write every day on here, cause if you have a private rp where you write every day, I’m so emotionally invested that I can’t think of anything else. That’s why I try to keep things more slow on here even if I love to be invested. But it’s better for my mental health to step back, cause whenever someone leaves the rpc, it hurts me incredibly, even if I don’t blame them. I just feel so very deeply for Rick that it breaks my heart.

I just finished Fruits Basket Another and I have some Feelings, okay? Under the cut, because spoilers.

THE CHARACTERS

Hoooo boy let’s unpack here. Furubana is about Sawa Mitoma, a nervous first year in high school. She firmly believes that she’s basically human trash, and resolves to take up as little space in the world as possible, and that’s not even me paraphrasing. She says within the first few pages she wants to take up as little space as humanly possible. We find out that she’s the daughter of an extremely abusive mother - emotionally abusive. Sawa’s mother never hits her, but she’s also never once nice to her in any of her appearances. She isolates Sawa from any and all friends, she constantly drags Sawa down, and she’s rarely even at home, even back when Sawa was a little girl. How long has Sawa been looking after herself? Sawa is what Tohru could have become if Kyoko had been involved with a gang member rather than Katsuya. 

The main trio of characters is rounded out by essentially the same trio as before: Mutsuki Sohma as the son of Yuki and Machi and Hajime Sohma as the son of Tohru and Kyo. Visually, they look nearly identical, which is why I chose that ^ picture. But they could not be more different. Sawa is every Sohma insecurity rolled into one, and the Sohmas are what their parents could have been without the curse and the constant abuse. Hajime is one of the oldest of the cousins, smothered with love and affection by his entire family, and is lovingly referred to as Dad and Papa (which annoys him), being one of the few in the family who cooks, cleans, or is, y’know, responsible. (Good job, Kyoru! Teach your boy right!) He is unwillingly elected student council president, and manages it easily. Unlike his father’s life, things come easily to Hajime, but he doesn’t let that make him conceited. He’s a down to earth character who trades biting remarks with Mutsuki. Mutsuki, on the other hand, I love. I adore. I want to erect a shrine to this boy. Poor Yuki, his wife hath birthed him a miniature Ayame. Mutsuki is trouble under a beautiful exterior, subtle snark and gentle teasing, but over the top in other aspects (like his thing that was once a desk and complete inability to do the most basic of tasks like buy laundry detergent, his utter willingness to let other people do things for him). He is also a deeply caring individual, and has an extremely close relationship with his cousin Shiki which is the complete opposite of his father’s relationship with Shiki’s mother that I nearly cried right there while reading volume three.

Kinu Sohma is the daughter of Hatori and Mayuko (a pairing of which I am not fond), and I actually was not fond of her until volume three, at which point she became a treat. A college student, Kinu seems to have no real ambitions or life goals (much like many college freshmen), spends much of her time sleeping, and only really sweeps in at the last chapter to comfort a very distressed Sawa in the way only a fellow woman can, delivering a wonderful speech right up with Kyoko’s Words Of Wisdom about how no one has the right to treat you badly, even your own family. No one has the right to abuse you, demean you, hurt you. That is a curse. She actually uses the word curse, and it makes me wonder what her parents told her of the Sohma curse, if Hatori ever mentioned how Akito used to be, or how Shigure was such a piece of shit about the seahorse, and it made me love Hatori all over again, for teaching his daughter such a powerful thing. Volume three also gave wonderful interaction between Kinu and the entirely deranged (but perfectly appropriate) Hibika Sohma, the daughter of Ayame and Mine. Just like Hatori is the only one who has any sort of control over Ayame, Kinu is the only one who can reign in Hibika. I believe these two are the oldest, out of all of the cousins, because in volume two, Hibika just fucking jets off to Paris with no warning, at the top of one of her tiny tophats instead of setting up her parents’ second store, because she needed inspiration to create new dresses. I don’t think a high school student could do that. Hibika may possibly be the oldest (Kinu is still a minor at 19 [Japan’s age of adulthood is 20]), because I don’t think a minor could do that either. She’s obsessed with Sawa and playing dress up with her, something Kinu is able to reign her away from doing with ease. She’s only the tiniest bit toned down from Ayame. I love her.

Michi Manabe is the daughter of Kakeru and Komaki and is sometimes at odds with Hajime. My biggest complaint with Furubana is that she is not in it enough!! Despite not being a Sohma proper, Michi is included in nearly all Sohma activities and all the Sohma cousins know her. She and Mutsuki were raised as siblings and address each other as such, which is precious because awww, but also because Kakeru has a deep sibling bond with his half sister as an adult, Komaki (who I view as another Tohru in a way, from how she was introduced) made an effort to keep Yuki and Machi in their lives and comfortable, and Yuki and Machi both created a family unit with the one family member who wanted Machi around, a bond so strong that their children saw each other so much growing up that they refer to each other as siblings. How precious is that?? Poor Hajime is probably the only voice of reason Mutsuki ever had in his life because you know Michi is to Mutsuki what Kakeru would be to Ayame. God I need a Kakeru-meets-Ayame-centric episode right now. Yuki would DIE. Riku Sohma is one half of the twin siblings born to Haru and Rin, and while he looks like Haru, this boy is a lot like his mother. He doesn’t have the anger issues his parents have, not really (except for instance of punching out Hibika’s brother), but he can be a bit spacey, he’s very serious and literal, and he likes to sleep. Everywhere. This family and their sleep. It kills me. He also gets himself a cute little girlfriend, and because of his crush on this girl and his watching of her, he notices her wanting to reach out to Sawa, and Sawa makes her first friend (mostly) on her own in nearly her entire life! On the other hand, Sora Sohma, his twin sister, is cute and spacey, a bit ditzy, and looks like their mother but is 100% Haru. She has nicknames for everyone in the family, and never calls anyone by their actual name. She’s my second favorite character after Hibika. Sora reminds me very much of Usagi Tsukino: instead of seeing a person, Sora sees a friend.

Poor Chizuru Sohma should’ve been Yuki’s kid. Honestly I’m surprised Ayame and Mine don’t have more kids, given how passionate I’m sure they are. And while Chizuru loves his father, he does declare the man crazy (as does every other character, minus Mutsuki, who says he’s “the most terrific of all uncles”) on more than one occasion. Chizuru is the more responsible of the Ayame/Mine Sohma children, setting up the Ayame II shop essentially on his own until Mutsuki offers Sawa’s help as a part timer (because remember, Hibika decided to go to Paris for the week).  He hates that others view his family as eccentric and him as normal and especially hates when they comment on it, and he tends to be a bit foul-mouthed and outspoken. A bit like Hiro. Poor kid. Rio Mosca is Saki Hanajima’s boy and he is NOT KAZUMA’S SON AND THIS MAKES ME SO SAD. His parents’ love story is rather cute, however. His father is a foreigner (Italian, given that his surname is Mosca), and the two met on a plane, making this a cute little callback to when young Megumi prayed for a someone for Saki to “get on a plane and meet her.” Mina Sohma is the most precious baby and is the daughter of our boy Momiji! Although, look at her - could she be anyone else’s child? She is sweet and cute and seems to be without Momiji a lot - Momiji inherited his father’s business (which seems to be international?), and he travels all the time. Mina has a great talent for batting and rather than be privately tutored and follow her father all over the world, she stays behind in Japan to play baseball for her school. Her dream is to take over the family business from her father like he did from his. It seems Momiji’s terribly tragic story ended happily, as it seems he reconciled with his father enough to inherit his business... (more on this later). And then we have Shiki Sohma, who is surprisingly the son of Shigure and Akito! :O Shiki seems to inhabit two worlds, much like the Sohmas of Furuba. On the one hand, he is part of a generation who was raised by those healed by Tohru Honda. Loving, caring parents who love and adore their children. He has friends who care deeply for him - his best friends, despite all being in different grades, are Chizuru and Rio, and they all play Go together in the school club. His family are all deeply committed to him - Mutsuki especially is close to him, as seen in the first volume where Shiki was teased at but not seen, as Mutsuki called him to come to the house where he, Hajime, Kinu, and Sawa were having a hot pot with Michi, Riku, and Sora.  His parents both are and aren’t the Shigure and Akito we know from Furuba - Shigure is still the immature jokester and Akito is still the serious head of the family, but they both love their son immensely, totally and completely in a way that Akito remembers being loved as a child by her father, in a way that Shigure’s parents probably loved him. On the other hand, in volume three, it is shown that, being the son of the head of the family, and living in the Sohma compound, with the old servants, the “old timers,” and Ren, subjects Shiki to some truly horrific abuse the likes of which no other second gen Sohma child has had to go through. Shiki would greet guests who would give him gifts, only to find that within those gifts were notes badmouthing his mother. Ren attempted to stab him as a small child, something the old Akito would and has attempted on the first gen Sohmas, and it’s implied the only reason was because Shiki was Akito’s child. Akito threw herself in front of Ren’s knife and took the blow for her boy. Shiki is a quiet and withdrawn child, one foot in each of these worlds, and seemingly paralyzed over how to act. Much like Sawa, especially once she meets the Sohmas.

Remember I said we’d come back to Momiji’s happy ending? See that woman in the top left? That’s Momo Sohma, Momiji’s sister. In Furubana, Momiji has reconciled not only with his father, but with his sister as well! Momo appears to pick up Momo from the Sohma house; she is Momiji’s assistant and Mina seems to stay with her sometimes when Momiji is out of the country. Momiji has his family back!!! Speaking of families, Hinata Sohma, Hiro’s little sister, is all grown up and makes her own appearance in the third volume (and is a slight alcoholic, lol). She also mentions brothers - did Hiro did another sibling after his curse broke?? Megumi Hanajima makes an appearance as a teacher at Kaibara High School, and this is my second complaint about Furubana - there is not enough Megumi!! He grew up sexy! Second best glow up in the series after Momiji! It’s Megumi who tells the romantic story of how Saki met her husband on the plane. Also making an appearance is Makoto Takei, former student council president, unwilling witness to Haru’s natural hair color explanation. He is now a teacher as well, and Sawa and Riku’s homeroom teacher. He’s also still in love with Yuki, and lets Mutsuki get away with anything. He is often at odds with Ruriko Kageyama, the daughter of Motoko Minagawa of the Prince Yuki Fan Club. Ruriko has inherited her mother’s obsession, though unlike Motoko and Makoto (god those two would’ve made a great obsessed couple), Ruriko loves ALL Sohmas. I don’t understand how the worship of an entire family to stalker levels is an official school club but whatever. Ruriko is actually pretty cool, and while she’s pretty strict, she’s also on somewhat friendly (like, “person I talk to at school but nowhere else” type friend) terms with Sawa. 

THE STORY

I feel this can best be summed up in five sentences and in reverse: When Sawa was little, she fell down the stairs. She was found by Shiki, who simultaneously called an ambulance and fell in love with her. Her piece of shit mother sued Shiki because he was rich as shit. Ten years later, no Sohmas harbor any grudges against Sawa, her mother is still a piece of shit, the Sohma children are full of Tohru-and-Kyoko wisdom passed down from their parents, and try to help Sawa. And also they all hardcore ship Shiki/Sawa. The end. 

No seriously, that’s the story. It’s beautiful. I wish there was one or two more volumes, a cameo featuring the adults, it would be perfect. Could you imagine the terrible awkward jokes Shigure would make? “Honey look, Shiki’s in love with the girl he pushed down the stairs as a kid. Was marrying her one of the terms of the lawsuit? Hahaha.” And Akito would just be like “....baby, you and Sawa go outside while I smack your father, you don’t need to see this.” And the two go outside and we then see Shigure fucking fly through the paper door and a loud “YOU FUCKING MORON” follow him out with the classic -_- “did I say something wrong?” Shigure face. And Shiki is just a fascinating color of ruby fire about the cheeks and mumbles, “so yeah... that’s my father....” and Sawa is a similar color and staring at her shoes like “he seems nice...” and Akito opens the ruined door as though she didn’t just beat the shit out of her husband and calls out to them, “come and have tea, your father had to step out for a bit. Sawa, dear, I’d love to hear more about you. would you prefer jasmine tea or green,” because Akito has done a complete 180 and become a decent human being since becoming a mother and Shiki is EVERYTHING to her and if her son loves this girl then GODDAMNIT SO DOES SHE.

I’m really tired of people saying that the only reason why she didn’t get with Seiya because she didn’t want to change the timeline since she knew she supposed to marry Mamo and have Chibiusa..

Seiya fucking annoyed Usagi for the majority of that damn season! She really gave two fucks about them while her “friends” keep pushing them up on her cause their rock star status… The only time that shifted was when she found who they was and they took a shot for her in their civilian form.  Which they was hurt and acting like a sad drama case for two episodes while she got blamed for it by the other lights…( which the shift was rushed as hell) 

Usagi still would have married Mamo even she didn’t know about the future cause she fucking loves him and Mamo loves her.

I may not like the Break Up arc but that damn arc fucking proved it.

People dislike for Chibs and Mamo really shows with that damn statement.

Seiya transferred all their feelings they had for their Princess onto Usagi which was complete unfair to Usagi.  Especially  when she needed a friend shoulder to cry into while she was finally breaking about missing Mamo. While this fuckboy was thinking about their damn selves and turn the whole situation to be about them and not her. Am I not good enough is not fucking romantic at all but emotionally manipulative at it’s best. .

OCCUPATION.         Chibiusa  is  the  CROWN  PRINCESS  of  Crystal  Tokyo  when  she’s  at  home.  However,  in  my  main  verse  she  lives  with  the  Tsukinos  in  present-day  Tokyo,  Japan.  There,  she’s  an  EIGHTH-GRADER  at  Juuban  Middle  School.  Aside  from  this,  she  keeps  the  city  safe  under  the  guise  of  ETERNAL  SAILOR  CHIBIMOON,  a  pretty-suited  soldier  of  love  and  justice.  As  she  gets  older,  this  carries  over  and  Chibiusa  takes  up  the  mantle  of  Neo  Sailor  Moon  when  she  returns  to  Crystal  Tokyo  permanently.    Later  in  life,  she  ascends  the  throne  as  Queen  Lady  Serenity.

FAVOURITE  DRINK.         Chibiusa  is  a  big  milk  drinker.  Her  favourite,  of  course,  being  strawberry  milk.  When  she’s  not  drinking  milk,  she’s  either  drinking  tea  or  water;  but  she  always  tends  to  default  to  milk  if  she  can  help  it.  Despite  her  love  for  sweet  things,  she’s  not  a  huge  soda  drinker  as  the  carbonation  tends  to  upset  her  stomach.  

FAVOURITE  HOBBY.         Chibiusa’s  biggest  hobby  is  ART.  You  can  almost  always  find  her  with  a  sketchbook  in  hand  and  some  kind  of  pen  or  pencil,  drawing  away  in  her  notebook.  School  notes  are  often  littered  with  doodles  in  the  margins  and  even  her  diary  has  artistic  drawings  throughout  the  pages  to  accompany  whatever  event  happened  that  day.  Besides  drawing,  she  loves  to  paint  and  has  a  particular  fondness  for  watercolour.  Besides  art,  Chibiusa  is  also  very  fond  of  VIDEO  GAMES  and  is  very  good  at  them.  Living  for  over  900  years  has  given  her  plenty  of  time  to  practise  and  she  can  beat  just  about  any  game  you  give  her.  

FAVOURITE  SCENT.            Flowers;  specifically  roses.  One  of  her  favourite  places  in  the  Crystal  Palace  is  its  gardens,  where  she  spends  most  of  her  free  time  just  sitting  among  the  flowers  and  sketching  the  day  away  in  her  sketchbook  or  diary.  On  a  more  personal  note,  she  loves  the  smell  of  her  mother’s  perfume.  The  backpack  she  carries  when  she  travels  to  the  past  is  often  spritzed  with  this  perfume  so  that  any  time  she  feels  homesick,  she  can  smell  the  perfume  and  feel  like  she’s  close  to  her  mother  again.  

FAVOURITE  PERSON.         It  would  be  impossible  to  ask  her  to  name  her  favourite  person,  as  there  are  numerous  people  who  hold  a  special  place  in  her  heart—Usagi,  Mamoru,  her  parents,  Hotaru,  Pluto.  Even  Helios  has  taken  up  valuable  space  in  her  life,  despite  the  briefness  of  their  meeting.  

T E N   F A C T S  —

Besides  her  interest  in  art,  Chibiusa  is  also  active  in  the  GARDENING  CLUB at  Juuban  Middle  School.  She  loves  working  with  different  flowers  and  planting  them  around  the  school  with  the  other  kids  in  her  club.  Because  of  this,  she’s  developed  quite  a  talent  for  naming  flowers  and  their  meanings,  a  feat  she’s  accomplished  with  help  from  Makoto.

Unlike  Usagi’s,  Chibiusa’s  hair  is  very  thick,  meaning  that  it  takes  longer  for  it  to  grow  out.  Usagi’s  hair  was  already  ankle  length  by  the  time  she  was  fourteen,  but  it  will  take  Chibiusa  several  more  years  before  her  hair  reaches  the  same  length.  

As  a  child,  Chibiusa  would  often  go  to  the  park  to  sit  on  the  swingset  when  she  was  particularly  upset  or  sad  about  something.  Several  times  throughout  the  manga  and  anime,  she’s  depicted  sitting  on  the  swingset  during  moments  of  duress.  This  becomes  somewhat  of  a  tradition  as  she  gets  older;  the  swingset  becoming  her  own  quiet,  personal  space  to  think  about  things  that  are  troubling  her  and  unwind.  

Though  she  remembers  Wiseman  approaching  her,  Chibiusa  has no  recollection of  her  time  as  Black  Lady.  There  is  a  gap  in  her  memory  from  the  time  Wiseman  approached  her  to  her  awakening  as  Sailor  Chibimoon.  No  one  has  brought  it  up  to  her,  and  so  she  remains  oblivious  to  her  actions  under  Wiseman’s  control.  

Chibiusa  has  a  varying  degree  of  fluency  in  FIVE  DIFFERENT  LANGUAGES,  including  Japanese,  English,  French  and  reading  and  writing  fluency  in  Latin and  Greek.  Given  her  age  and  the  sheer  number  of  years  she’s  had  to  study,  she  finds  languages  fascinating  and  would  certainly  be  interested  in  learning  more.  She’s  particularly  interested  in  learning  Korean,  and  has  picked  up  bits  and  pieces  from  listening  to  music,  but  isn’t  fluent  enough  to  hold  any  level  of  conversation.  

Chibiusa’s  Ennagram  is  Type  4,  The  Individualist.  Fours  are  self-aware,  sensitive,  and  reserved.  They  are  emotionally  honest,  creative,  and  personal,  but  can  also  be  moody  and  self-conscious.  Withholding  themselves  from  others  due  to  feeling  vulnerable  and  defective,  they  can  also  feel  disdainful  and  exempt  from  ordinary  ways  of  living.  They  typically  have  problems  with  melancholy,  self-indulgence,  and  self-pity.  At  their  Best:  inspired  and  highly  creative,  they  are  able  to  renew  themselves  and  transform  their  experiences.  Type  Fours  have  a  desire  to  create  an  identity  for  themselves and  fear  having  no  personal  significance.  

Chibiusa  ascends  the  throne  of  Crystal  Tokyo  as  Queen  when  she  is  20  years  old,  taking  on  the  title  of  QUEEN  LADY  SERENITY,  or  SERENITY  III.  By  this  time,  King  Endymion  has  passed  away  and  Neo  Queen  Serenity  has  either  sent  her  Star  Seed  back  to  the  Galaxy  Cauldron  to  be  reincarnated  with  Endymion,  or  has  chosen  the  path  of  becoming  Sailor  Cosmos.  Regardless,  Neo  Queen  Serenity  worked  tirelessly  to  create  a  kingdom  that  would  love  her  daughter  once  she  inherited  it  and  thus,  Chibiusa’s  reign  as  queen  becomes  known  as  the  AURORA  MILLENNIUM.  

Each  of  the  Inner  Senshi  had  a  hand  in  personally  training  Chibiusa  as  a  Senshi  during  her  time  in  Crystal  Tokyo;  Mercury  taught  her  battle  tactics  and  basic  first  aid,  Mars  handled  the  humanitarian  side  of  things,  Jupiter  physically  trained  with  Chibiusa  to  build  up  her  strength,  and  Venus  mentored  her  in  the  ways  of  diplomacy  and  leadership.  

While  Chibiusa  no  longer  holds  the  fear  of  never  being  able  to  grow  up,  she  still  struggles  daily  with  INSECURITY  over  whether  or  not  she  can  really  live  up  to  Sailor  Moon’s  legacy.  Chibiusa  understands  that  she  is  her  own  person,  and  therefore  doesn’t  need  to  emulate  Sailor  Moon  or  her  mother;  but  making  her  proud  is  very,  very  important  to  her.  Often,  when  she  isn’t  sure  what  to  do  in  a  situation,  she  asks  herself  what  her  mother  would  do,  what  Usagi  would  do,  what  Sailor  Moon  would  do,  and  can  usually  find  her  way  from  there.  

Regardless  of  whether  they  end  up  together  or  not,  Chibiusa  more  or  less  considers  Helios  to  be  her  FIRST  LOVE.  He  was  one  of  the  few  she  felt  comfortable  enough  confiding  in  about  her  deepest  fears  and  concerns  and  he  never  treated  her  any  less  for  how  young  she  was  or  how  little  she  was.  Though  their  time  together  was  short,  she  will  always  be  grateful  for  the  way  he  treated  her  like  a  normal  girl  and  not  a  princess  who  needed  to  live  up  to  impossibly  high  expectations.

COMMON  WORDS / PHRASES  THAT  ANNOY  THEM.          Anyone  insinuating  that  she  can’t  do  something  because  she’s  too  young  or too  little  is  a  sure  fire  way  to  dampen  her  mood.  Chibiusa  is  fiercely  independent,  and  will  make  it  a  matter  of  pride  to  prove  that  she  can  do  anything  she  sets  her  mind  to  regardless  of  her  age  or  size.  

PERSONALITY  TYPES  THEY  PREFER.         Chibiusa  gravitates  towards  calming,  reserved  personalities  like  Hotaru,  Mamoru,  or  Helios.  Boisterous  personalities,  like  Usagi,  she  tends  to  butt  heads  with  a  lot  because  of  their  personality  similarities.  She  needs  someone  to  balance  out  her  own  loud  personality.  In  other  words,  Chibiusa  can  dish  it  out,  but  she  can’t  take  her  own  medicine.  

PERSONALITY  TYPES  THEY  AVOID.         Chibiusa  immediately  avoids  anyone  with  discriminatory  or  offensive  views  such  as  racism,  homophobia,  sexism,  etc.  She  also  tends  to  avoid  people  who  are  openly  arrogant  or  conceited  as  that  kind  of  behaviour  grates  on  her  nerves.  For  the  most  part,  Chibiusa  can  get  along  with  just  about  anyone;  but  these  personality  types  are  definitely  people  she’d  rather  stay  away  from.  

WHAT  DO  YOU  FIND  DIFFERENT / DISTINCT  ABOUT  YOUR  PORTRAYAL?          I  think  I  definitely  take  to  exploring  Chibiusa  as  a  teenager/adult  way  more  than  the  average  person  in  the  fandom  does.  Most  of  the  information  and  interactions  on  this  blog  are  centered  around  a  post-canon  setting  that  lets  me  flesh  out  Chibiusa’s  life  beyond  what  Naoko  laid  out,  so  I  think  that’s  pretty  unique.  I  also  don’t  equate  Chibiusa  to  Usagi  nearly  as  much  as  she  is  in  actual  canon  or  the  fandom.  Chibiusa  is  more  than  a  carbon-copy  of  Usagi,  and  I  try  to  portray  that  and  expound  on  their  differences  any  chance  I  get;  also  showing  the  ways  that  she’s  similar  to  Mamoru/Endymion.

⭐- What’s a scene/paragraph you’re proud of? - For both the Reveal and Nightmares, please ♡

Goodness! For Nightmares?! To pick out one scene or one paragraph from a 40k story! That’s SO HARD!!! I am so proud of so many things in this story. I love the way the premise developed in the story – how it is woven through everything. Like everything in this story has a purpose – like every element was chosen with intention. What I’m probably most proud of was being able to show how Usa and Mamo were both just hurting. I think this was one of the first times in my writing where I walked away from just using 90% dialogue, to including imagery/description, specifically and intentionally to establish a subtext to what the character was going through. I narrowed it down to four.

Scene 1: From Motoki’s perspective.

“Well then, can I get you something while you wait?” “A chocolate shake please? And can you make a strawberry one too for Mamo-chan?” “Coming right up!” He went up to the kitchen and came right back down with the requested shakes. He added an extra cherry to each and then slid them in front of Usagi. She smiled gleefully at the ‘show’.  “Thanks Motoki-oniisan!” “Anytime, Usagi-chan. I’ll be back when I can, but it’s super busy upstairs. If I miss you both be sure to give Mamoru-kun a stern talking to for me!” “Only for you!” she grinned before happily slurping away on her chocolate shake. He returned to work serving and taking orders, no longer worried at all. Usagi had a way of just putting all his worries to rest, especially when they concerned Chiba Mamoru. He wasn’t able to make it back to the arcade floor for a whole thirty minutes. When he came back and found Usagi still there, now spinning forlornly on her stool with her tall glass long since empty, while the strawberry shake still remained untouched.“Usagi-chan?” he said in concern. “I thought you’d be long gone by now.” “Motoki-oniisan, may I use your phone?” she asked stoically. His heart went out to her. It was unlike Mamoru to ever leave her waiting and his worries plummeted to new depths. Could something have happened to his cynical friend?

What I’m proud of – the description of the milkshakes and what it represents to Usagi who has essentially been stood up. But that’s never said!

Scene 2: From Mamoru’s perspective.

He sat unshowered and unshaved, leaning against the wall next to the answering machine. The particular space on the floor had somehow become his usual spot. He took a swig of the beer in his hand before hitting play on the machine. “Four saved messages,” the robotic voice reported. “Hi Mamo-chan! I miss you!” she said brightly. “Give me a call and we’ll do something fun to celebrate the end of finals. Love you!” Beeeeep. “Mamo-chan? Are you okay? I haven’t heard from you in awhile and was getting worried. Please call me when you get the chance.” Beeeeep. “Mamo-chan?” He could hear the unexpressed hurt in her voice. “Have I done something wrong? Why aren’t you calling me back?” Beeeeep. “Mamo-chan,” she sniffled. “I’m sorry I just barged in the other day. I didn’t r-realize you were having a bad day… Whatever… whatever I did… to make you angry… I’m sorry… Please forgive me,” she begged through her tears.  “End of messages,” the robotic voice finished. He pushed play again. “Hi Mamo-chan! I miss you! Give me… A knock at the door interrupted his self-pitying episode of the afternoon. “…a call and we’ll do something fun to celebrate…” He forced himself to his feet and opened the door without thinking. Halfway through the action he realized his mistake and prayed that it wasn’t Usagi. He couldn’t face her – not right now. “…the end of finals. Love you!” He breathed a sigh of relief to see Rei standing stoically on the other side of the threshold already glaring daggers at him.  Beeeeep. “Mamo-chan? Are you okay? I haven’t heard from you in awhile and was getting worried. Please call me when you get the chance.”Beeeeep. Rei raised her eyebrows as the continued recordings played through.“End of messages.” He met her glare stubbornly with one of his own, daring her to say something about it. He would love the opportunity to scream at someone. But much to his own disappointment, she did not comment.

What I’m proud of – honestly, the voicemail messages. How the tone of them changes and how that shows what Usagi is experiencing even though she’s not in the scene at all. And how Mamoru’s listening to them over and over again – what that shows about his state of mind.

Scene 3: Mamoru thinks it’s over and Usagi is going to die.

The worst part of it was that he knew he wouldn’t die. The non-corporeal creatures would pass straight through him. Harm only coming to his beloved. She would leave him here alone. He didn’t want to survive without her. “Mamo-chan,” she whispered looking up at him calmly, “kiss me.” He squeezed his eyes closed against what he recognized as her last request, as her acceptance of death. “Don’t give up me Usako…” he whispered.“Trust me!” she screamed at him.He didn’t need to be told twice. He crushed his lips against hers desperately.The music stopped and for a split second everything was perfect. They were the only two people that existed.He deepened the kiss, allowing their tongues to dance, sharing the same air. He breathed in her essence. A second later, the silence seemed deafening. He turned, glancing around. Everything froze in perfect stillness.He tried to convey all his regrets and his love in the simple contact. If this was going to be the last time he tasted her sweet lips he had to make it memorable enough to last a lifetime. Then the world exploded in sound and heat. The ground itself ripped itself apart, directly under Usagi’s feet. She began to fall into the chasm seemingly in slow motion.Mamoru dismissed the vision of his beloved’s demise, losing himself in the kiss that he never wanted to end.Usagi pulled away gasping for breadth. He felt like the sun had just disappeared.She squealed in delight. “It worked!”

What I’m proud of – this takes place right after their confrontation with one another now that they both know what’s going on. And I really like that they really talk in this scene about things that they should have talked about forever ago. And then, of course, right when they’re getting somewhere, everything goes to hell. I love this moment, I think I really built up the tension here with the flashing to the desperation for one final kiss that may have to last a lifetime inbetween the scenes of the nightmare that’s been plaguing him. I again, just think it’s shows where Mamoru is emotionally in this moment without actually just saying it!

The whole last chapter. I won’t include it all here. But this chapter is so important to me! I wanted to show, that just because they both know what happened, doesn’t mean it didn’t leave scars and it certainly doesn’t mean that they’re both just over it! So, this chapter was so slow in its pacing, especially compared to the previous chapter (which probably was the actual climax), and that was intentional in trying to show that rebuilding a relationship that has been broken by a breach of trust, takes time and work!

One thing I did super intentionally. There are like multiple scenes that end with Mamoru saying “I love you” in which Usagi doesn’t say it back. Like she acknowledged it, but didn’t say it. So, when she finally does say it, it feels significant to Mamoru yes, but hopefully also to the reader, if only subconsciously.

For a Reveal:

Okay, this may sound awful, but I actually don’t have one that I’m super proud of…? Don’t get me wrong - I think it’s good! Like I LOVE the series because it is SO FUN! It’s where I get to just write because it’s enjoyable to do so (and not stressful). And I totally get why so many people love it too! And I love seeing how creative I can be with the gimmick, but the series also sort’ve serves as my morning pages. It’s my “junk writing” or “drabble series” so to speak where the goal is just to get stuff down on paper as quickly as possible when I’m stuck everywhere else. The point is to get words flowing again. It’s not to obsess over diction and metaphors, or quality of writing in general. And if I make someone laugh, groan in sympathy, or cry… well, that’s a huge bonus! It’s interesting to me how there doesn’t seem to be a popular one that pops up over and over – that so many people like different ones! But I don’t feel like it usually represents my best writing ability.

If I have to choose, I’d say my favorite one is probably the “Touch” one. Like this one is sad, but also hopeful, and I feel like it was so powerful for that. But I also had dreams of turning it into something more! And I just never could take it anywhere. And eventually, I got tired of sitting on it, so I eventually posted it as is.

But I love my multi-chapter stories more. I love depth! And change over time! And a drabble just doesn’t allow you to do that as much. And the multi-chapters take so much more effort, planning, and forethought. They really really stretch me as a writer. So, the reveals are fun, but not where I feel super proud....Thank you for the ask Flora Dearest! I always appreciate getting the chance to dive back into my own work and really look at it critically and reflect!

Usagi Drop (Bunny Drop)

Usagi Drop is a breath of fresh air from the copious amounts of fan service, placid character structures, and excessive more that permeates anime series of recent times. It’s a rare series (from my limited knowledge) that touches upon issues in a serious and honest manner, while simultaneously having the ability to subtly include right amounts of lightheartedness and humor that prevents the series from adopting too heavy an atmosphere. There exists a synergy and expert balance rare in such a form that weaves an empathizing and heartwarming tale.

The series ultimately follows the interactions and time passing by two characters, Rin (6-years-old) and Daikichi (20-some-years-old). Rin’s father, who happens to be Daikichi’s grandfather, passes away and leaves Rin an orphan. Beginning with the funeral, the series uses the strange relationship between Daikichi and Rin (who met for the first time at the funeral) as a device to bring these two characters together, not as some scandalous drama tool.

What carries the series through every episode is the priceless bond Rin and Daikichi share. Rin is modest, caring, independent, and responsible. She’s very mature but then not without those traits which you find ever-present in kids around her age. Joyful, curious, and downright adorable! Needless to say, her expressions are genuine signs of love and appreciation, even for something like a poor attempt at tying pigtails. How she feels shows on her face clear as a sunny day, and boy does it knock me off my chair. But the most essential role in bringing out all these sides of Rin is Daikichi.

Daikichi’s a very straightforward guy, both in personality and appearance. On top of that, he’s nurturing, compassionate, and protective. A little awkward at times, but it comes with the job. He juggles his new responsibilities well with work and still manages to maintain a good relationship with those around him through his earnest and kind disposition. His fondness for Rin is apparent, but only in a fatherly kind of manner. Though Daikichi is just as inexperienced in caring for a young girl as the next “first father,” what you get is a middle aged guy just trying to do his best to provide for himself and his new little house warmer.

I consider the greatest strengths of Usagi Drop lie in the series’ attention to minute details and micro-decisions that attribute to the overall feel. Usagi Drop definitely is not a show driven by grand plot twists or high production values. Rather, the series comes across as down to earth, easy to relate to, and warm. This is mainly seen through two forms: the artistic form and the background music.

Most notably, soft watercolour-esque scenes start out each episode before the opening song rolls. It’s really a nice way of preceding the bulk of the episode. Character designs are markedly simplistic but there’s no need to fuss over it. With some added touches of realism, it’s nice knowing they do change clothes each day and night and that Daikichi does grow a stubble if he doesn’t shave every day like any other grown man. The backgrounds are subtle yet detailed; from pavement cracks to packaged market meat, everything in view is easy on the oculars.

Music-wise, Usagi Drop expertly deals with various renditions of both the opening and closing songs as well as numerous piano melodies and environnmental acoustics that constantly match and support many, if not all, occurrences on screen. It is this fundamentally understated role that the BGM upholds that makes it so valuable. Though the BGM is not always the most fun or melodious soundtrack to listen to sans-visuals, composer Matsutani Suguru sacrifices the “listen-to-my-epic-music-like-hans-zimmer” factor to solidly act as sentimental and emotional base for Usagi Drop. The opening/ending songs, on the contrary, are quite different. Both a intrinsically very cheery jingles, where the opening was catchy enough for me to warrant listening to it every time biked to class.

Neither the art or music are really the strengths that propel this series to be so wonderful, though both must be given due credit since they are both significant and great contributors. What really shines through every episode is the dialogue, both in its spoken and written forms. Ayu and Tsuchida’s performances as the voices of Rin and Daikichi leave little more to be asked for. Thanks to them and all the other seiyuus, the talking that goes on in the show becomes one of its strengths. For example, in one episode, Daikichi and Harumi, Reina’s mom, have a serious discussion about Harumi’s marital problems which is eavesdropped on by Rin. But noticing this, Reina takes her aside and shows her how she copes when mom and dad don’t get along. Not something seen every day, you get both the child and parent’s perspectives of when things aren’t going so smoothly at home. Really, kids are keen in times like that and it’s great to see that the anime picks up on this detail. And it’s not only those I’ve listed who have depth of character but everyone has their own charm about them and grows, if just a little, in their own way in the span of only a year.

A live-action version of Usagi Drop was announced recently, and the film’s promotional video admittedly looks good (not only in terms of acting/casting, but also the COLORS. I am curious to see if similar emotions and atmosphere can be achieved with real acting and cinematography. An advantage that is partially (not solely) given to the animated form of storytelling through it’s flexibility and ability to present artistic renditions of any scene. Though live-action productions have that option in set design and character make-up, certain creative choices are limited by the fact that if we stray too far from what we can naturally perceive as “real,” we become emotionally detached from the experience (btw, Mana Ashida is way too cute as Rin).

What truly makes Usagi Drop successful lies in the way it captures life, even with all of its insignificancies. Natural happenings such as waking up irritable and half alert, washing your teeth, brushing your face, and fumbling to find your valuables are daily occurances that are more often than not, omitted in popular entertainment in trying to create an idealized pseudo reality that is far more attractive. These normal experiences, however, are things that everyone can relate to (but are often not shared with others, because who actually cares?). Compiled and mixed with moments in our lives that are boring, we come to appreciate the novel manner in which our lives are interwoven, and how the patchwork of both happy and sad thoughts. Usagi Drop thus personifies ‘life,’ not neglecting the special moments that we treasure, but remembering that special moments are special because others are not. Through this, we as viewers are able to really connect with the characters and their story on a more personal level.

Then of course, spliced in between those bits of irrelevance are the undoubtedly meaningful moments to be remembered. And we want to save those precious moments by documenting them. It’s in our nature to try and preserve the best times of our lives in some form or another.

Personal deep thoughts that make me ponder people sometimes and makes me cry silently alone.

So, something’s been on my mind the last couple of weeks that I’ve tried keeping to myself, that I’ve only told a few of my friends privately in my personal life...it still feels so weird and puzzling to me...warning, you might breakdown crying as I had over time, grab tissues, or want to hug me tight nonstop after you read this...it’s that intense of feels, so don’t say I didn’t warn you.

So, I have this friend in fandom, cosplay, the arts, etc. who I will not personally name, let’s call her “J”. J has lately gone through many phases of changes that just seems to shock everyone in our life who have known her for quite some time...one minute she’s emo scene kid, next minute goth, emo, goth kawaii, emo again to suddenly lolita goth. Then she goes from rejoicing of saying she’s at some point bisexual, to making us all assume she’s a lesbian but then suddenly tells us she’s bisexual to suddenly without warning or my LGBT Gay-dar going off becoming this negative moodly beyond rage claiming, “I’m trans, but not like normal cist or mixed Trans men or women, I don’t want any physical or visual change of going from female to male. I only feel mentally/emotionally a man not no longer a Woman. You all better get used to accepting me suddenly as Trans Identifying as Male, no longer calling me by my born female name, start calling me by my brand new male name or else I won’t be happy. I will not be disrespected because I am now a male, so get used to it, don’t screw up trying to get used to going from female pronouns to male pronouns.” You can imagine that’s been...quite the roller coaster of having to deal with suddenly, going through this major “change’’. The messed up part...She now “He” never once told me one of “his” closest friends ever about this sudden change of no longer Identifying as Bisexual/Lesbian to suddenly this, especially when he knew my boyfriend and I are all pro-LGBT everything, I myself having trans friends fully going through all the phases of changing their gender/etc. So this was a surprise...especially when this friend of mine is/was my best friend...who only during my time visiting me this summer for short of a week only dressed in very highly feminine gothic clothes, full on normal female make up, not transgender clothes, or drag makeup, or even gender neutral clothing like my normal trans friends did. Prior to this, to visiting, he J had made this whole big thing of telling me, “To please privately inform your mother and family that I’m no longer going by my prior used female name and I’m now a male with a male name and educate them about LGBT Trans Rights, etc. and make sure no one messes up calling me the wrong gendered pronouns or names or else I’ll not be tolerated to be disrespected as a mixed race black/asian transgendered man.” Again, quite the angry aggressive response he gave me when I was like, “I’ll do that, mind you my family is traditional hispanic-mexican-native american but they aren’t homophobic or transphobic as you automatically assume. They’ve only known you as your past female name so, it will take them time to adjust to suddenly calling you a new name etc. Especially since you barely had told me about this all of the sudden change barely in the last year dropping this bombshell on your own Mother, Myself and my boyfriend when we’ve been bff’s for years man...you haven’t even come out male to all your real life family/relatives and friends.”   So after all that lecturing me, like I was an idiot bisexual woman, what happened...”He” refused to go by He or his male name, instead told me to not say anything to anyone, and went willingly, so willingly by his former female gender, female pronouns of a name...it made me feel frustrated, upset, confused as well as my boyfriend by this act he/she was playing with us and my family and his family who are all accepting of all races, religions, LBGT too.

  I hate to say or admit it, but I started questioning if J was confused by this sudden change of sexual or gender identities mixed up, because she went from being straight, to lesbian, to bisexual, to lesbian, to bisexual then a mixture of lesbian/bisexual to suddenly out of the blue now saying she’s a transgendered male but refuses to go through any of them if not “normal” steps a transgendered female to male or male to female person does. She still demands to be called female pronouns/names but at the same time demands to be identified as male pronounces/names? And dresses/acts fully female heterosexual woman wise? It’s really confusing for us, even to my other Trans friends when I privately sought out their advice on the matter. They told me either J is confused by identities with what transgender she wants to be, or she’s faking her gender identity trying to fit into the LGBT lifestyle or her/his circle of friends who are trans male to want to belong. I’m honestly not sure since J’s continuing to be so confusing in her contradictions, moments of episodes, identities that she/he probably isn’t sure either. I really don’t know but telling me a bff bisexual you’re this then that, then this again, hollering rage wise “I want to be known as a man!” but then claim, “I want to be identified as a woman” is very beyond confusing and messed up to act like this towards your own ally in LGBT.

But this stuff, beyond J’s episodes of emotional yelling outbursts, incidents that happened when J was visiting me for a short week, couldn’t compare to something J shared with me that just threw me into an emotional loop as He or she kept insisting suddenly “she�� threw on me surprise wise...concerning J’s feeling concerning kids/babies...

When you're told something so shocking by someone in your life not long ago, how they really feel about children/babies in general to the point where their literal cold honesty without remorse shocks you to the core. They say really hate children/kids that much negatively.  I honestly don't know how to feel about this, really I don't. I know sometimes some people can't stand to say certain/specific things about children/babies or don't like certain types of kids. But to literally dislike/hate children that much to where they can't stand to be around any sort of child, kid, baby, infant, toddler or much less a pregnant woman or woman who just had a baby/ have a baby in public. Without really giving me an actual reason to really 'why' they feel this way of hate/dislike to babies/kids disturbs/troubles me. Is that normal for an individual to feel that way, or have any sort of legit phobia, or raw honest hatred for children? To the point where they'd refused to be near loved ones who are pregnant or want to see them even if they ever had a baby/child on purpose to avoid them? 

I don't know honestly how to feel about this after someone in my life told me how "they truly felt'' along with adding, "Our world's too overpopulated enough. Anyone who has a child intentionally or not is fucking selfish. To have a child in this world is selfish. I hate kids." It just makes me question a lot more things, makes me feel sad hearing this, makes me want to pity someone being that so hateful/being willing to negatively hate babies/children that much. I question whether the day I become a Mother hopefully one day in a few years if... The day I become a Mother one day to a child, I can't help but question if whether or not I would want that person in my life around me when I'm pregnant, after I have my child, if I'd allow/or want that individual around my child if they hate/dislike kids that much intolerance. The screwed up fact is that J knows that I and my guy love kids, we would like to be parents in a few years once we move in, get things in order in our lives to provide for one, have our own place, etc. That we would be happy whether having a child naturally or adopting one either way. What really upset/hurt me is this little factor, J claims she/he hates kids to the point where *points above quote J said feelings of kids* That he/she doesn’t want any of his/her own her/his self. But J had the nerve to tell me, “Well even if you get pregnant by planning to have a kid with your partner, let me make it clear not to friend include me in anything. I’m not even comfortable being at a baby shower celebration or the hospital if you give birth, or even adopt etc. I feel you want a kid with your health issues of Lupus is selfish. But maybe you’d make an alright Mom...but I hope at least you’re responsible enough to once you have a kid to raise that child, not as the sex it’s born but either gender neutral or non-gender sex assigned pronouns of she/he. I believe kids shouldn’t be classes at the gender their assigned, and parents need to educate themselves of gender-neutral ways or Trans ways to let that child be “it” not he/she or a girl or boy how people handle their kids from birth forcing the sex-gender on them in pinks or blues or toys. I hope you do that so your kid isn’t screwed up in this girl/boy society, raise it genderless or trans.” It really bothered me...a woman/trans male who hates kids/doesn’t want kids telling me how to raise my future one-day fetus/infant/baby/child. If my child was a boy or girl I wouldn’t care, would still love it. I’d dress it in either colors, rainbows or hell either gender mixed clothes because it’s just clothes! If my child when they're older, more mentally developed to understand everything, told me they feel they are possibly transgendered. Then okay, let’s see a specialist doctor or therapist who helps parents and kids educate about Transgender and LGBT positively to make sure you really feel this is what you are and no one is trying to force it on you. If my kid wants to be straight or LGBT or Identify as whatever they want, I will love them still regardless. As for others like J demanding to “educate me” on how I should raise my child when they hate kids themselves or don’t want any...that’s hypocritical b.s. and beyond hurtful insulting to me

Since then, I haven’t really talked to her/him...I’m still confused, hurt that he/she feels this way with so much hatred...hell, even told me if I were to have a kid pregnant wise/raised a kiddo of my own that they couldn’t see me due to hating kids in general that much, so she/he purposely avoid me, not want to visit/see me or my family because of a hate that much and beliefs? Seriously?!

Pablo Vargas: Aries-1st April

Pablo is a total Aries and being the first in the zodiac sign suits him just well. Hot-headed, passionate and a willingness to lead (dictate). He’s also aggressive and pushy though he has the best intentions at heart.  I chose April 1st for April Fool’s day which I feel suits Pablo quite well.

Takito Narita: Aries/Taurus Cusp-April 20th

Takito is also an Aries though I feel like he’s more subdued than the typical intense Aries and embodies some of the male Taurus characteristics, such as being down to earth and being practical. He also has a hidden snarky side which can come out. I chose April 20th as it’s right on the cusp of both signs; though Takito is an Aries through and through.

Tamaki Ozu: Taurus- May 6th

Originally pegged as an Aries, though Tamaki is certainly passionate and dedicated to her craft, the way in which she exudes effortless and glamour places her firmly in the Taurus category. We see Tamaki able to be charming, diplomatic and even superficial, but it’s always done with a sense of irony and awareness, much like the Taurus. It takes a lot to anger and spur Tamaki into action, but once you do, the results can be disastrous for those on the receiving end. May 6th birthdays are noted as being extremely attractive, sociable, and charming. Tamaki is of course all these and more!

Yasue Temko: Gemini- June 12th

Gemini is often noted for having two sides and Yasue certainly fits this. We see the kind-hearted goofy side for the most part, though as things progress another side of Yasue, a much darker sombre side and this was exemplified when Bertrand died. I decided on June 12th as I know someone who is a beekeeper and that’s her birthday, so it fits quite nicely.

Chiyo Ando: Cancer- June 30th

Idealistic, morally pure and dreamy to boot, Chiyo is a Cancer woman who always fights for what she believes is justice. As the SHSL Magical Girl, Chiyo lives up to her name and often suffers for her ideals such as not showering and not wearing makeup.  June 30th is the perfect birthday, sharing it with Usagi Tsukino from Sailor Moon and Pekoyama Peko from SDR2.

Wataru Gensai: Cancer- July 4th

Crabby is certainly an adjective that can be used to describe the pyrotechnic. He’s an intense patriotic who always puts Japan on a pedestal. Can be critical, intense and moody though he seems to have a heart of gold. I chose July 4th as a birthday because it’s American Independence Day and there’s something hysterical about Wataru sharing a birthday with the independence of another country.

Okita Sugitani: Leo- August 9th

Our resident playboy, Okita is a charming social persona. We also see a narcissistic cowardly man who isn’t afraid to through others down to save himself. Smarmy could be a word to describe the essence of Okita. Charming is another. Though Okita is a Leo, there is no particular birthday which suits him. He’s not on the Cancer or Virgo cusp which is why I placed him in the beginning of August.

Nahoko Miyake: Virgo- September 4th

Intelligent, hyper-critical and a business mogul to boot, Virgo is a perfect fit for our SHSL Day Trader. Nahoko is certainly arrogant and she has the resume to back it up. She will also offer you the best advice and knows her lane inside out. I chose September 4th because that’s the same birthday as Beyonce and honestly Nahoko would be stoked to share a birthday with another business mogul.

Kotori Ijiri: Virgo/Libra Cusp- September 24th

Kotori is highly intelligent and analytical. Kotori is also harmonious and peaceful, wanting nothing more than unity for the group. She often serves as the voice of reason and acts as a makeshift counsellor for the rest of the students.  She was also the only one to stand up for Takito in the 1st chapter. While she has both Virgo and Libra traits, Kotori birthday falls on Libra as she is often able to work in harmony with others and fights for justice. September 24th is reported to be a caring and thoughtful individual which suits Kotori

Benito Kasai:  Libra/Scorpio cusp-October 18th

The Libra/Scorpio cusp has the motto “it’s my way or the highway!” and Benito is definitely this. While amicable, good natured and even hearty, don’t dream of getting in his way, otherwise you will be gutted skinned and served with a wedge of lemon! October 18th, 1851 was the release date of Moby Dick by Herman Melville. Benito has the same birthday and he couldn’t be happier.

Ryouta Miki:  Scorpio- November 11th

A lot of Scorpio’s work in journalism and news broadcasting. Ryouta proudly carries that tradition. Scorpio’s are also known for being intense, trustworthy and secretive to name a few. And secretive, oh me oh my if Ryouta is not the textbook definition of secretive, even going so far as to have a secret identity; Kibougaman. November 11th makes the date 11/11 which is fitting for Ryouta.

Hitomi Yunokawa: Sagittarius- December 17th

Vibrant. Lively. Optimistic. Hitomi Yunokawa is a great ray of sunshine and her character fits the zodiac sign Sagittarius so well. Often noted as excitable and warm, Hitomi takes everything in stride, even her SHSL Mutant title. December 17th was selected for her birthday because it was when the Wright brothers were finally able to achieve success with their contraption of an aeroplane. Travel and movement perfectly represents Sagittarius and in turn Hitomi.

Satoko Royama: Capricorn- December 26th

We love our snarky holier than thou polyglot. Capricorns are often noted for having a twisted sense of humour, as well as being hardworking and determined. Satoko does justice to these traits. December 26th is noted as being extremely hard working and tenacious and being fluent in so many languages, takes some serious determination, which is why Satoko has this birthday.

Akinori Kurokawa: Aquarius- Janurary 27th

Oh, Akinori. Our redhead child. Always a bit of a misfit and a bit of an oddball. You could call him quirky and that would be a compliment. Aquarians are often known for going against the grain and doing their own thing, and in all honestly being a SHSL preacher certainly encourages that. January 27th is noted as being a rare birthday, in fact Aquarius is often said to be the rarest sign.

Itsumi Jukodo: Aquarius - February 14th

Now we have our SHSL Archaeologist who has a fear of dirt. Who would have thought? The Aquarius woman is noted as doing her own thing her own way and Itsumi’s fear of dirt will surely mean she has to adapt and do things her own way to become the SHSL Archaeologist. She’s a paradox for sure. February 14th is none other than Tomb Raider Lara Croft’s birthday, though her and Itsumi could not be more different.

Ikkaku Kirigiri: Pisces- March 7th

And finally, we come to our mysterious student Ikkaku Kirigiri. When you first met him, he’s aloof, combative and generally hard to talk to. Astrology denotes that Pisces men are the most emotionally volatile sign of the zodiac. Astrology also notes that Pisces are suspectable to developing addictions which, given what Ikkaku’s true talent was, this is a sad but suitable match. March 7th was chosen because in Ikkaku’s case there is no particular birthday, just particular zodiac.

「虎は死んで皮を残す」 (Tora wa Shinde Kawa o Nokosu) “A Tiger May Die, But It Leaves Its Skin”

I wasn’t emotionally prepared for this how wholesome Ushii’s relationship with Tora was going to be! There was reason to believe that she was angry at Ushii because of something standard like vengeance, but I didn’t expect it to be because she wanted him to recognize her after he helped her improve herself. Although Tora fell into her vices hard, having Ushii be the one to aid her in rediscovering the “Bu” and “Michi” that had vanished does justice for both character by making them complex and multi-faceted.

It says a lot about Tora in particular, who comes to realize that she needed to face the emotional turmoil she is in, and the fact that her drinking did very little in hiding the sadness she was trying to drown out. However, many of her actions throughout the Zodiac War hint at how susceptible she is to breaking. After working so hard to shape up and make amends with her callous sensei to participate in the War, she is distraught by Ushii not recognizing who she is. From that point forward, she’s spent her time in the War angrily attempting to track him down only to get distracted by the city’s alcohol that she was more than happy to indulge in. Ushii’s forgetfulness possibly sparked the desperation that lead her to taking up drinking in the first place.

And then, you have the events in this episode that lead up to her demise. Tora jumped in front of Usagi’s knife, knowing he could’ve parried it with ease and that trying to take the stab for him would only get her killed. Later, when she had the chance to tell him who she was, and how much he meant to her, she sabotaged that by lying about never meeting and only wanting to challenge him because he looked cocky. Tora’s decisions in this episode were infuriating based on how easily her death could’ve been prevented and how she could’ve at least had him recognize who she was in her last moments. At the same time, the way Tora kept talking about how pursuing her own desires wasn’t her speed hinted that she didn’t feel like she deserved to get the closure she would’ve wanted. Telling him who she was or asking for a kiss seemed like requests that she felt weren’t her style, so doing things her way meant a tragic end paralleled with the pure luck of having Ushii deliver the final blow.

While Tora was the most emotionally compelling person in this episode, Ushii won a ton of brownie points for giving us insight on the emotional core and nurturing side to his character. I was extremely worried that Ushii was going to stab her along with the soldiers in her flashback, but seeing him show concern for Tora’s safety and health was a relief. On top of that, he was reassuring about her convictions, outlining his personal ethos about accomplishing goals and acknowledging the responsibility one should have when doing the wrong thing. Additionally, the unease he had about Tora sacrificing herself and requesting for him to deliver the finishing blow shows that he’s not always as composed as he comes off. The nobility he shows in honoring debts and duels is one thing, but his emotional range in this episode went far beyond how we’ve seen him up to this point. His role in helping Tora reignite the spark she once had, and tending to her after trying to rush her to safety adds a layer to depth to him as he isn’t merely the cold warrior who has killed systematically throughout the Zodiac War.

With Tora gone, we only have Nezumi, Ushii, Usagi’s zombified body parts, and Zombie Shuryuu left in the game. Those who predicted that Usagi wasn’t going to be killed that soon were right on the money, but it is baffling how Usagi would even be able to fulfill his wish if he were to win it in pieces. Nezumi popping up out of nowhere is all, but guaranteed, though I am wondering how everything is going to go down with all of the strongest combatants now pitted against each other.
