Pinky Promise

Malleus Draconia x Reader

Summery: As a child you tended to wander off in the forest alone. Not that anyone minded. You were quiet and kept to yourself most of the time as long as you came back in the morning and stayed out of trouble. No one would look for you.

It was a sad thought but a normal one. One day you meet someone on one of your midnight journeys. A special someone you might even dared call a friend.

Based off the song YUBIKIRI-GENMAN by Mili.

“When did we realize?

That there was no way we could live alone?”

Cold winds nipped at your skin, further irritating your already redden nose and cheeks. Shrugging off the sensation. Urgency fuels each step as the threat of the winter cold chases your beloved lightning bugs away. A sparkle makes home in your eyes as the fleeting lights greet your vision.

“I’m so glad I didn’t miss you! Winter is gonna be lonely without you, you know.” Y/N scolded playfully, not aware of the curious gaze they attracted. “Then again, I’ll be able to draw pictures in the snow again. Shame I can’t show you.”

“I don’t believe they can understand you, child of man. Then again could it be possible you can speak to them?” A looming figure approaches you, making you crane your neck to meet firefly-like eyes.

Like a curious puppy, your eyes scanned the stranger with a tilted head. A quiet ‘whoa’ escaping your lips upon reaching his beautiful horns. Offering the stranger a sheepish smile while pushing aside your racing heart. You point at the dancing lights above the water.

“They don’t. At least, I don’t believe so. It simply feels less lonely, don’t you ever feel lonely mister?”

Flaming eyes blinked back at your tiny form. Upon a closer inspection, it seems you’re barely the size of his leg. Yet why didn’t you run? How strange people could be. Especially asking a somewhat personal question.

Deciding to humor the child. The tall stranger returned a smile, nodding a bit.

“Yes, I have actually,” before he could continue his thought, your cheerful voice interrupted him.

“We can be lonely together!” “Pardon?”

Taking your tiny hand into his. You cradled his fingers against your chest with a cheeky grin. Despite his daunting appearance. No one should feel lonely. Even scary horned people deserved friends! you rationalized.

“My loneliness can befriend your loneliness! Then we don’t have to be alone anymore! Here, let’s make a promise.” puffing out your cheeks. The fae couldn’t help but chuckle at the sight of you struggling to interlock pinkies with him. Patting your head with his free hand, the male wrapped his pinky around yours. Warmth filling his heart at the sight of your childish glee.

“There! Pinky promise! Now next time we meet, I’ll bring something so you can remember me. Oh! I’m Y\N by the way. It’s a pleasure to meet you-you…” Once again doe like eyes gazed up at him expectantly.

“You may call me anything you wish.” “Firefly!” You cheered. So suddenly, ‘Firefly’ almost stumbled backwards. “Like your eyes and my flying friends. You’re Firefly. My firefly watching buddy,”

This time Firefly couldn’t help but smile genuinely, a chuckle erupting from his throat.

It had been a few days since Firefly saw Y/N. ‘Did they forget about him already? It wouldn’t be that much of a surprise. Humans can be such fickle creatures.’

“Firefly! I got it. We can match now!” Before the fae knew it. There was a tiny being sticking onto his leg for dear life. ‘Did I ever do this to Lilia when I was younger?’ He cocked his head to the side, curious of why the small being insistently tugged him to their height.

“What do you have planned, child of man?”

“You’ll see it when you kneel down. I want to put it on you myself! I have one too, you know.” Y/N quickly stuffed something into their shirt, pouting. “No peeking, please. I want it to be a surprise.”

Somewhat annoyed, yet amused by the tiny human's actions. Firefly kneeled down to the child’s height.

“There! Now you can look.” The raven haired male smiled at the sight before him. Balancing on the tip of his finger was a stone firefly pendant. The same one that Y/N was proudly showing off to him. “Now we don’t have to be alone anymore! We can just hold onto our fireflies and it’ll be like the other person is there!” Y/N stated proudly.

‘If only such things were true.’ Firefly thought, ruffling your hair. “Thank you, child of man. I’ll treasure it.”

Days turned into weeks. Weeks into months. Months to years.

The tiny human that once hugged his thigh can now happily nuzzle his chest during their meetings.

“I feel like it has been about twenty summers since we met, Firefly. May I please have your name yet or must I wait until I get married? You said when I became of age but that happened three years ago! Surely fifteen years of friendship means something to you!” His human friend sighed dramatically. Nesting themselves on his lap as their eyes looked up at him in disappointment.

“Of course it does. Though I never said when I’ll tell you. It could be tomorrow. A week from now,” he teased, smiling softly at his huffy friend’s reaction.

“I’ll be an old maid by then. Firefly, how you wound me so!” With a soft sigh. Y/N played with the firefly pendant, gently caressing the cracks and ware. “May I ask you something serious Firefly?”

Their change in tone caused the male to straighten his posture. His fiery eyes burning the same light and youth as when they first met. ‘Not even a crow scratch or wrinkle dared touch his face. Almost as if he were a living doll.’ Y/N thought to themselves with a soft hum. Only to snap out of their thoughts as they noticed their friend’s curt nod.

“There is no point in denying that I’ll be gone before you but what will you do? I don’t hear you talk about other friends. Only knights and a caretaker. Firefly, I don’t want you to live a life alone.” Y/N tenderly caressed their friend’s cheek, frowning at the usual unreadable expression Firefly wore.

“I won’t be alone. I’ll have you after all.” Even with the years growing on his friend. They still remind him of the child he met so long ago. ‘Still such fragile hands,’ he thought, gently taking Y/N’s hand into his as he pulled out his own pendant. “You are the one who said we will always have each other just by holding these.”

Feeling their cheeks burn. Y/N sat up quickly, hugging their knees to their chest. “I-I was just a child back then. I did not know the weight of my words.”

“That does not change the fact you uttered them and that is a fact I will treasure.”

When was the last time Malleus dreamed? Were dreams always this heart wrenching?

His head pulsed with pain as the image of a stone firefly being buried in dirt filled his head. A soft smile. A warm laugh. Everything felt so familiar yet foreign to him. It left his body trembling in the cold.

The pendant. It was his, wasn’t it? He couldn’t have buried it, for it was a gift from his- Tears burned his eyes as the memories came rushing back.

‘Where is it? Where did I place it after all this time?’

The fae scrambled through his drawers. Careful not to draw too much attention to his room. He can’t have the other’s coming in and seeing his frenzied state.

Cleaning his new mess. The prince sighed deeply, slipping his hands under his pillow only to feel something hard. Pulling out the object, tears rained upon the firefly.

“Pinky promise! With these, we’ll always have each other and never be alone again!” It was all a lie. He knew that, the second those words left their mouth but he wanted to believe. He wanted to hope.

Within all the years of his life when did he realize, there was no way he couldn’t live alone?
