Bomb Cyclone (CNN) A “bomb cyclone” is expected to batter the Northeast this weekend with heavy snow, wind and coastal flooding. More than 75 million Americans are currently under winter storm watches and travel advisories. Some forecasts remain uncertain, but most are showing that Eastern Massachusetts, including Boston, and Rhode Island could be hit hard with 12 to 24 inches of snow combined with wind gusts up topping 60 mph. The storm is expected to form off the coast of the Carolinas, and once it reaches the East Coast, it may dump as many as 14 inches of snow in portions of Connecticut and New York, where wind gusts may reach as high as 55 mph. Portions of northeastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia could also see up to 3 inches of snow and high winds.

Mexican resort town near Cancún sees second deadly shooting in a week (Washington Post) Authorities in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo are investigating the shooting death of a man who worked as the manager at a popular beachfront bar, the second fatal attack within a week in the resort town of Playa del Carmen. The Tuesday killing at Mamita’s Beach Club followed an assault the previous Friday on three Canadians at a resort less than six miles away. Officials have said last week’s shooting at the Hotel Xcaret was the result of an argument between guests, and that the Canadians who died both had criminal records. Tourist destinations in the Riviera Maya region, including Playa del Carmen and Cancún, have been trying to combat news of violence for months, after several shootings in popular areas since the fall. In November, tourists south of Cancún ran into resorts for safety after gunmen shot at each other on the beach. Two men died in the incident, a clash between gang members over drug territory, authorities said.

Argentina faces billion-dollar IMF trip wire as protests simmer (Reuters) Argentina is facing a billion-dollar trip wire of debt repayments to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) coming due with uncertainty over whether the South American country will pay amid tense talks to revamp around $40 billion in loans. The grains-producing country, which has been battling currency and debt crises for years, is due to pay back $730 million to the IMF on Friday and another $365 million on Tuesday next week, though officials have not confirmed plans to pay. On Thursday, hundreds of people took to the streets of Buenos Aires to protest against the Fund, which many blame for austerity measures that worsened a major economic crisis in 2001/02 which plunged scores of Argentines into poverty. “What we are proposing is not only to stop paying the debt and break with the IMF, but to restructure the entire economy according to the needs of the majority,” said Celeste Fierro as she marched in the city outside the central bank building.

The familiar gripes include a tradition of low pay, a public service career structure that thwarts ambitions to get ahead in life, the nagging enticement of going to work abroad instead of staying at home, and politicians’ broken promises of improvement, especially for health workers like Orfao who have weathered the coronavirus pandemic. Russia says it won’t start a war as Ukraine tensions mount (AP) Russia’s top diplomat said Friday that Moscow will not start a war but warned that it wouldn’t allow the West to trample on its security interests amid fears it is planning to invade Ukraine. “There won’t be a war as far as it depends on the Russian Federation, we don’t want a war,” Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in a live interview with Russian radio stations. “But we won’t let our interests be rudely trampled on and ignored.” Lavrov noted Friday that the U.S. suggested the two sides could talk about limits on the deployment of intermediate-range missiles, restrictions on military drills and rules to prevent accidents between warships and aircraft. He said that Russia proposed discussing those issues years ago—but Washington and its allies never took them up on it until now. While he described the U.S. offers for dialogue on confidence-building measures as reasonable, he emphasized that Russia’s main concerns are to stop NATO’s expansion and the deployment of the alliance weapons near Russia’s borders. Entering Beijing’s Olympics bubble is a surreal experience (AP) For the thousands of athletes, journalists and others descending on Beijing for the Winter Olympics, China’s strict pandemic measures are creating a surreal and at times anxious experience. China is isolating everyone coming from abroad from any contact with the general public for the duration of the Games, which open next week. That means being taken from the Beijing airport in special vehicles to a hotel surrounded by temporary barricades that keep participants in and the public out. The experiences of AP journalists who have arrived or are preparing to depart offers a glimpse into life inside a bubble. Photographer Jae Hong said he had been warned about the bubble but seeing it in effect in Beijing was still a shock. He described seeing passengers met by workers in white, full-body protective gear. Everyone is tested for COVID-19 at the airport before being transported to their barricaded hotels, the entrances protected by round-the-clock guards. Everyone is tested daily—failing to get tested the previous evening means being stuck in your hotel the next day. Those who test positive are taken to a hospital if they have symptoms or a quarantine hotel if they do not. Tokyo also had strict rules for the Summer Olympics last year, but participants were allowed outside of the bubble after two weeks.

Report: 5,000-plus deaths under Ethiopia’s Tigray blockade (AP) Nearly 1,500 people died of malnutrition in just part of Ethiopia’s blockaded Tigray region over a four-month period last year, including more than 350 young children, a new report by the region’s health bureau says. It cites more than 5,000 blockade-related deaths in all from hunger and disease in the largest official death toll yet associated with the country’s war. “Deaths are alarmingly increasing,” including from easily preventable diseases like rabies as medicines run out or expire, the head of Tigray’s health bureau, Hagos Godefay, told The Associated Press late last year as the findings were being compiled. “This is one of the worst times of my life, I can tell you.” His report on the findings, published Wednesday by the independent Ethiopia Insight, says 5,421 deaths were confirmed in Tigray between July and October in an assessment by his bureau and some international aid groups.

Tropical Storm Ana: Nearly 80 dead in southern Africa (AFP) The death toll from Tropical Storm Ana that struck three southern African countries rose to 77 on Thursday as emergency teams battled to repair damaged infrastructure and help tens of thousands of victims. Packing torrential rains, Tropical Storm Ana made landfall Monday in Madagascar before ploughing into Mozambique and Malawi. Rescue workers and authorities across the three countries were still assessing the full extent of the damage. Madagascar has reported 48 dead, with 18 others killed in Mozambique and 11 in Malawi. In the three hardest-hit countries, tens of thousands of homes were damaged. Some collapsed under the heavy rain, trapping victims in the rubble. Swollen rivers washed away bridges and submerged fields, drowning livestock and destroying the livelihoods of rural families.

What Is All This Isolation Doing to Us? (Vice) A tiny studio apartment in the city centre of Birmingham was Katie’s universe for much of the COVID-19 pandemic. With little greenery outside her windows, no family in the UK and almost all social interaction limited to phone calls and delivery drivers, anxiety quickly festered. The uncertain months of isolation experienced by the 33-year-old university lecturer—whose name has been changed to protect her identity—created fertile ground for catastrophic thoughts, particularly those around her health. With no one near to keep her distorted thinking in check, things began to spiral, and she was diagnosed with depressive anxiety, something she puts down to constantly being alone. Katie was not alone in being alone. Scientists have described the pandemic as “the largest isolation study in history”. Based on reported cases of COVID-19, it is likely that upwards of 16 million people in the UK have experienced self-isolation since March 2020. During one week in January 2022, one in ten adults in Britain reported that they were in self-isolation. Then there are the more than 2.2 million clinically vulnerable people who were advised to shield for months from mid-2020. Self-isolation’s impact on our mental and physical health is yet to be fully observed. Scientists have gone so far as to study data from astronaut missions to find relevant parallels about the possible consequences. A previous study into the effects of isolation on workers at polar research stations found that 60 percent of subjects reported depression, irritability and sleep disruption.

The American circus is in decline, but performers thrive on TikTok (Input) While the American circus is in serious decline, performers are thriving on TikTok, where the hashtag #circus has 4.2 billion views. Influencers and performers have won over millions of followers. In the 19th and early 20th century, the circus was the premiere form of American entertainment, and days that the touring shows visited towns and cities were considered akin to a holiday. Over time, the circus slowly became less relevant, with radio, television, and other forms of entertainment taking precedence. By 2017, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey, America’s largest circus, was forced to close up shop amid dwindling audience numbers and concerns about animal welfare. When the pandemic hit in 2020, circus artists, unable to perform, were ready to dazzle folks on TikTok. “We had nothing else to do and all of this pent-up creative energy. I was throwing that into videos,” says Grace Good, 28, a self-trained circus artist from Tennessee with 2.7 million followers. Her videos include hula hoop performances, fire-eating displays, and complicated airborne tricks. “Reading comments from people who looked forward to my videos and livestreams, it would make me cry,” Good says. “It kept me going.”

Arnon Grunberg: ‘Ik ontspoor alleen nog met gelijkgestemden.’

Arnon Grunberg schreef een aangrijpende liefdesroman (De Dood In Taormina) en werd vader van een bijzondere jongen (Alyosha). Twee kanjers van mijlpalen, in een leven dat toch al niet rustig voort kabbelde. "Hoe dichter bij het paradijs, hoe dichter bij het onheil."

"Ik probeer je link opnieuw. Houd moed." Het is in Manhattan nog maar half tien 's ochtends en Arnon Grunberg moet al een stressaanvalletje afweren. Een vroeg bezoek aan de mondhygiënist eindigde later dan gepland, in het New Yorkse stadsverkeer zat evenveel beweging als in het wereldbeeld van Filip Dewinter en de Zoom-link die beloofd had om de oceaan tussen ons te overbruggen, toonde zich pas na een hele tijd inschikkelijk. Video-interviews: ze brengen je geen stap dichter bij Boeddha.

Arnon Grunberg heeft New York nog maar een paar dagen geleden heroverd. De reünie met zijn flat vlakbij Grand Central Station zorgde voor een acute opstoot van adrenaline. Thuis is waar je hart ligt. Ook al verdeel je dat hart al een kwarteeuw over twee continenten. "Het is fijn om na drie maanden Nederland weer hier te zijn. New York heeft zich duidelijk prima hersteld van de pandemie. Al had ik ook niks anders verwacht. Deze stad heeft al vaker getoond dat ze veerkrachtig is."

De aanleiding voor ons gesprek is De Dood In Taormina: de mooie nieuwe roman van Grunberg. Het verhaal, in een zowel resumerende als reducerende notendop: een jonge regie-assistente (Zelda) knoopt amoureuze relaties aan met een ouder wordende acteur (Jona) en een ongekreukte Zweed (Per). Nadat Zelda haar mannen een tijdlang apart heeft gesavoureerd, brengt ze hen op de hoogte van elkaars bestaan en reizen ze met z'n drieën naar Taormina om met ingehouden adem de grenzen van een driehoeksverhouding af te tasten. Al doende trakteren ze elkaar op bespiegelingen over 'liefde en rechtvaardigheid', 'vergiffenis en pragmatisme' en 'acteren en oprechtheid'.

De Dood In Taormina had geenszins De Dood In Beveren-Waas kunnen heten: Zelda, Jona en Per verwachten veel van hun menage à trois en een Italiaanse kuststad is nu eenmaal 'een beter decor voor geluk' dan een Oost-Vlaamse fusiegemeente. "Taormina staat voor de schijn van paradijselijkheid", zegt Arnon Grunberg. "De Middellandse Zee en de Siciliaanse sinaasappelbomen doen dromen over ongecompliceerde gelukzaligheid. Maar vaak geldt: hoe dichter je bij het paradijs komt, hoe meer je ook het onheil nadert. Dat is in deze roman niet anders."

Nog voor ik Grunberg met gespeelde schroomvalligheid kan vragen of het polyamoureuze thema van zijn boek autobiografische wortels heeft, heeft hij de vraag al voor me beantwoord. "Ik ben in het gezelschap van mijn vorige vriendin, Roos, en een minnaar van haar ooit zelf naar Taormina gereisd. Dat was zo'n ingrijpende belevenis dat ik ter plaatse al tegen Roos zei: 'Dit wordt een roman. Dit wordt De Dood In Taormina.'"

Met je geliefde en haar ontuchtige sidekick op reis gaan: is dat wel een goed idee? "Ik ben als schrijver misschien meer dan andere mensen geneigd om het avontuur op te zoeken. Om te denken: 'Waarom niet?' Ook al besef ik dat ik misschien een pijnlijke ervaring tegemoet ga."

Is het dat ook geworden? In De Dood in Taormina gaat de driehoeksrelatie alvast met de nodige strubbelingen gepaard. "Een seksuoloog heeft me ooit gezegd dat een driehoeksverhouding enkel kans op slagen heeft onder homoseksuele mannen. Omdat zij beter in staat zouden zijn om liefde en seksualiteit van elkaar te scheiden. Ik weet niet of dat klopt. Maar ik begrijp wel waarom de meeste mensen kiezen voor een meer conventionele relatievorm. In een driehoeks-verhouding bestaat altijd het gevaar dat je het derde wiel aan de wagen bent. Een monogame relatie verschaft je minstens de illusie van geborgenheid. Ook Zelda, Jona en Per snakken naar een zekere vastigheid, maar zoals alle mensen hebben ze tegenstrijdige verlangens. Ze willen niet enkel veiligheid, maar ook spanning. En dat is precies wat ze in Taormina vinden. Het machtsevenwicht tussen hen verandert voortdurend: ze bespelen elkaar met overgave, niemand heeft permanent de bovenhand. Die instabiliteit maakt hun driehoeksverhouding boeiend en aantrekkelijk."

Zelda staat erop dat Jona toekijkt wanneer ze met Per vrijt. Ze wil dat hij alles ziet en meemaakt, dat hij 'geen deserteur is van zijn eigen verlangen'. Maar is het soms niet verstandiger om wél weg te lopen van je verlangens? "Dat denk ik niet. Als je je verlangens te vaak onderdrukt, doe je jezelf tekort. Je kan je verlangens, ook de obscure, beter proberen te aanvaarden. Of dat lukt, hangt af van hoe je jezelf ziet. Als je denkt dat je een heilige bent, is het accepteren van je duistere begeertes moeilijk. Maar als je er vrede mee hebt dat je niet uitsluitend goed bent, lijkt het me perfect mogelijk om je bij je verlangens neer te leggen. Zelfs al zijn ze ontoelaatbaar. Ik kan me eigenlijk niet voorstellen dat er mensen zijn die géén ontoelaatbare verlangens hebben. En als ze wel bestaan, vrees ik dat het ontzettend saaie mensen zijn."

De kunst bestaat er natuurlijk in om je ontoelaatbare verlangens niet te doen uitmonden in ontoelaatbare daden. "Uiteraard. Maar dat je bepaalde verlangens hebt, betekent niet dat je er automatisch ook naar handelt. Noem mij naÏef, maar ik denk dat kunst een uitweg kan bieden om op een toelaatbare manier met ontoelaatbare verlangens om te gaan. Neem nu de religieuze schilderijen van vroeger. De maagd Maria werd daarin vaak afgebeeld als een aantrekkelijke vrouw met verleidelijke borsten. Dat gaf mannen de mogelijkheid om te denken: 'Ik mag eigenlijk niet naar andere vrouwen kijken, maar het is de maagd Maria, dus het is goed.' (lacht) Daarom vind ik ook niet dat er een verbod moet komen op getekende pedoporno. Zolang er in pedoporno geen echte modellen gebruikt worden, zie ik niet in wat er verkeerd aan is. Verantwoorde pedoporno helpt wellicht om te voorkomen dat pedofielen tot pedoseksuele daden overgaan."

Terug naar uw boek. Voor Per zijn intrede doet, weigeren Zelda en Jona hun relatie liefde te noemen. 'We werden een stel door te doen alsof we het niet waren. We stonden in brand, maar we zeiden tegen elkaar: 'Ik zie niets, ik ruik niets. Is er ergens rook?' Waarom doen ze zo nadrukkelijk afstand van het concept liefde? Omdat er in een relatie die niet als liefde bestempeld wordt meer zuurstof zit? "Dat denken ze toch. Ze zijn bang dat ze zichzelf in een romantisch harnas opsluiten als ze hun relatie als liefde erkennen. Maar al gauw blijkt dat ze daar sowieso in terechtkomen. Zodra ze bang worden om elkaar te verliezen, beginnen ze elkaar te wantrouwen en te beteugelen. In plaats van bastions te zijn voor elkaar worden ze elkaars concurrenten."

De onrust neemt nog toe wanneer Zelda ook een relatie begint met Per, 'de jonge cowboy uit het Noorden'. Per confronteert de oudere Jona met zijn eigen verval. "Zo is dat. Maar ook de jonge Zweedse God is niet immuun tegen aftakeling: het is een jonge Zweedse God met erectieproblemen. Het verval begint soms vroeger dan je denkt." (glimlacht)

De trip naar Taormina eindigt voor alle betrokkenen totaal anders dan ze hadden voorzien. Na een noodlottige Siciliaanse nacht duikt in uw boek de vraag op: kan je ontsnappen aan je eigen verleden? Is de waarheid per definitie 'sneller dan alle grote en kleine leugens'? "Dat onderwerp fascineert me al lang. Films en romans zijn doordrongen van de idee dat - als je iets vreselijks hebt gedaan - je verleden je altijd wel inhaalt. Dat vroeg of laat gerechtigheid geschiedt. Maar wat als dat een romantische illusie blijkt te zijn? Wat als 'onvermijdelijke rechtvaardigheid' helemaal niet bestaat? Dat vond ik een intrigerende vraag."

En hoe luidt uw antwoord? "Het heeft er alle schijn van dat je je verleden wel degelijk onder leugens kan verbergen. Er hangt een prijs aan vast, maar het kan."

De prijs die je ervoor betaalt, is dat je voor altijd verder moet met je eigen leugens. En dat je bij gebrek aan een publieke veroordeling van je daden ook niet zo makkelijk met een schone lei kan beginnen. Je staat voorgoed in het debet. "Je kan natuurlijk altijd verlossing vinden in de biecht: de religieuze confessie of de seculiere variant ervan, bij een therapeut. Maar ik vermoed dat de meeste mensen zo'n schuldbelijdenis niet eens nodig hebben. Eén van onze grootste talenten is om onze eigen daden - ook al zijn ze gruwelijk - voor onszelf te rechtvaardigen. Zelden kom je iemand tegen die zegt: 'Ik heb geen enkel begrip voor wat ik gedaan heb.' Een paar jaar geleden gaf ik een schrijfles in een gevangenis. Mijn publiek bestond uit mensen die nog lange tijd in de cel moesten blijven en waarvan je bijgevolg kon aannemen dat ze een moord of een ander geweldsdelict hadden gepleegd. Wel, elk van hen beschouwde zichzelf als een slachtoffer. Er zaten geen daders in die gevangenis, alleen maar slachtoffers. (lacht) Dat zegt iets over ons vermogen om onze fouten voor onszelf te vergoelijken."

Naar goede gewoonte zet de realiteit het in de nieuwe Grunberg weer op een stevig ontsporen: de vader van Zelda gebruikt een eierwekker om de huilbuien van zijn dochter te timen, Jona blijkt jarenlang de minnaar van zijn eigen moeder te zijn geweest en Per neukt principieel enkel na de middag. Ik vraag Arnon Grunberg waarom hij er op staat om de werkelijkheid in zijn boeken keer op keer te laten derailleren. "Omdat ik denk dat in de ontspoorde realiteit de waarheid te vinden is", antwoordt hij. "De wereld om ons heen is voortdurend aan het ontsporen. Maar omdat we daar niet mee kunnen omgaan, hebben we geleerd dat te verdoezelen. Als schrijver wil ik de absurditeiten van het leven blootleggen. En er de waarheid in herkennen. Mij lijkt het heel aannemelijk dat een zoon seksuele gevoelens heeft voor zijn moeder. Niet dat ik mijn eigen moeder lichamelijk begeerde, maar het was wel de eerste vrouw op wie ik verliefd werd. En wat Per betreft: als je erectieproblemen hebt, is het ergens wel logisch dat je zegt: 'Sorry, ik neuk enkel 's middags.' Die ongerijmde gedragsregel is voor hem gewoon een manier om met zijn schaamte om te gaan. "

Dreigt het absurdisme in uw boeken soms geen rem te zetten op het inlevingsvermogen van uw lezers? Maakt u het hen soms niet moeilijk om zich met uw personages te identificeren? "Je moet natuurlijk wel bereid zijn om de absurditeiten in jezelf en je omgeving te zien. Er wordt mij weleens half verweten dat de ontsporingen in mijn boeken enkel het product zijn van mijn verbeelding. Dat ze in de werkelijkheid niet voorkomen. Maar dat laatste klopt niet. Eén van de redenen waarom ik literaire reportages ben gaan schrijven (o.m. over de Amerikaanse soldaten in Irak, red.), is dat ik wilde aantonen dat de ontsporing overal zit. Het volstaat om de beelden te bekijken van de Afghanen die zich aan de wielen van een opstijgend Amerikaans vliegtuig vastklampen om te begrijpen wat ik bedoel."

Zoekt u ook in uw persoonlijke leven de ontsporing op? Moet u zich op tijd en stond kunnen laven aan ongewone, uitzonderlijke ervaringen? "Ik ben daar wat voorzichtiger in geworden dan vroeger. Maar het verlangen naar roekeloosheid is nooit helemaal weg. Met Roos en haar minnaar naar Taormina gaan, was een roekeloze daad. En toch ben ik in dat avontuur meegegaan: ik hou nu eenmaal van spelen. Wat ik echter niet meer doe, is mensen in naam van de literatuur misleiden. Ik speel alleen nog met mensen die zich bewust zijn van het spel. Noem het: ontsporen met gelijkgestemden." (glimlacht)

Wie ook graag speelt, is Jona. De wereld is zijn podium en hij verlaat het nooit. Voelt u zich aan hem verwant? "Niet echt. Tegen Jona zou zelfs ik regelmatig zeggen: 'Vanavond even niet, jongen.' Maar dat neemt niet weg dat ik de energie die hij uitstraalt erg aantrekkelijk vind. Als iemand zoals Jona de kamer binnenkomt, denk je meteen: 'Er gaat iets gebeuren.' Dat vind ik spannend."

Wilt u dat mensen ook over u zeggen: 'Ik ga met Arnon mee, want dan gaat er iets gebeuren'? "Ik wil dat mensen zeggen: 'Ik ga met Arnon mee, want dan weet ik nooit wát er gaat gebeuren. Misschien gebeurt er niks, maar evengoed kan het volledig uit de hand lopen.'" (lacht)

In De Dood In Taormina staat de mooie zin: 'Het leven is geen plicht, geen geschenk, geen test, het leven is een avontuur.' Hebben we de literatuur in het algemeen en de boeken van Arnon Grunberg in het bijzonder nodig om ons daar af en toe aan te herinneren? "Ik moet mezelf daar ook weleens aan herinneren. Het is niet zo dat mijn leven één ononderbroken avontuur is. Maar ik vind inderdaad niet dat we onszelf voortdurend moeten straffen voor het loutere feit dat we bestaan. De vader van Zelda doet dat in zekere zin wél. Hij ziet het leven als een plicht, hij is altijd maar aan het werken. En toch vraagt hij zich op een gegeven moment af: 'Waarom heb ik nooit met mijn dochter gespeeld?' Dat is voor hem een bijzonder pijnlijk moment."

U bent onlangs zelf vader geworden. Gaat u de zin voor avontuur in uw zoon aanwakkeren? "Het is hoogmoedig om te denken dat je je kind kan kneden. Maar ik hoop wel een vader te zijn die zijn kind een brede kijk op het leven meegeeft. Ik wil Alyosha laten zien dat er heel veel levens geleefd kunnen worden. Dat je van het ene leven naar het andere kan fladderen. Dat je niet altijd en overal dezelfde persoon hoeft te zijn. Misschien zijn dat wel de essentiële kenmerken van een avontuurlijk leven. Eigenlijk wens ik mijn zoon toe dat hij zijn verstand verliest zonder dat hij in de gevangenis of het gekkenhuis belandt." (lacht)

Alyosha Inigo Ayal Grunberg werd na een pijnlijke bevalling van ruim dertig uur geboren in een Amsterdams ziekenhuis. Een dag later schreef zijn vader hem al een brief: 'Als het leven begint met zoveel pijn, ben ik in mijn boeken misschien te mild geweest. In het ziekenhuis zei ik tegen je moeder, die op dat moment kermend onder de douche stond: 'Als je ziet hoe het leven begint, begrijp je een hoop.''

De moeder van Alyosha is de drieëndertigjarige Nederlandse schrijfster Niña Weijers, die luttele dagen voor haar existentiële martelgang nog in Humo liet optekenen: "We houden het voorlopig bij één kind, dat is overzichtelijk.” Moeder en kind bevinden zich momenteel in Amsterdam: zelfs dubbel gevaccineerde partners van greencardhouders geraken zonder trouwboekje niet voorbij de Amerikaanse coviddouane. En trouwen om aan die onrechtvaardigheid te ontkomen, willen Grunberg en Weijers niet. Er zijn grenzen aan wat een mens wil doen om de administratie te behagen.

Toen ik Arnon Grunberg drie jaar geleden in Brussel sprak, hadden noch Niña noch Alyosha zich al in zijn leven aangemeld. Toch zei hij: 'Falen als vader is het ergste wat je als man kan overkomen.' Heeft hij als prille vader last van faalangst? "Nee, helemaal niet. Ik voel veeleer een zelfvertrouwen dat niet echt op de werkelijkheid gebaseerd is. Maar dat is goed: je moét jezelf overschatten om een kind te maken. Als je er niet van uitgaat dat het allemaal goed komt, hoef je aan het opvoeden van een kind niet eens te beginnen."

Drie jaar geleden was u bang dat het vaderschap op gespannen voet zou staan met uw schrijverschap. Zijn de vier eerste maanden sinds de geboorte van Alyosha in dat opzicht bemoedigend geweest? "Zeker. Toen ik een paar dagen geleden naar New York vertrok, zei Niña tegen me: 'Ik vind dat we het tot nu toe heel goed hebben gedaan.' En dat was behalve een mooi compliment een vaststelling die ik alleen maar kon onderschrijven. Ik maakte me vóór de geboorte van Alyosha meer zorgen over het vaderschap dan vandaag."

Een week na de geboorte van Alyosha werd u geïnterviewd. Toen de journaliste u vroeg hoe uw zoon heette, antwoorde u: 'Nikolajevitsj.' Zullen we dat uit naam van uw imago maar het gevolg van een grotesk gebrek aan slaap noemen? (lacht) "De waarheid is dat ik de naam van mijn kind écht even was vergeten. 'Hoe héét die zoon van me ook weer?', dacht ik. 'We hadden hem toch naar een tsaar genoemd?' En toen rolde de naam Nikolajevitsj over mijn lippen. Ik ben benieuwd naar wat een psycho-analiticus daarvan zou maken. (lacht) De enige verzachtende omstandigheid die ik kan inroepen, is dat je altijd even moet wennen aan een naam. En aangezien Niña en ik niet op voorhand wisten of we een jongen of een meisje zouden krijgen, had ik nog niet de tijd gehad om me de naam van Alyosha eigen te maken."

Alyosha is een Russische naam. Hij betekent zoveel als 'beschermer'. "Het is een naam die opduikt in de boeken van Dostojewski. Maar ook J.M. Coetzee gebruikt hem in zijn Jezustrilogie. En aangezien Niña en ik allebei Coetzeefans zijn, moesten we weinig moeite doen om Alyosha een mooie naam te vinden. Dat Alyosha 'beschermer' betekent, was meegenomen. Ik vind het een mooie gedachte dat je een kind op de wereld zet dat andere mensen wil beschermen."

Uw eigen vader stierf dertig jaar geleden. Is hij voor u nog een voorbeeld? In positieve dan wel negatieve zin? "Ik heb in de aanloop naar de geboorte van Alyosha heel vaak aan mijn vader gedacht. En dat bracht meer herinneringen aan hem naar boven dan ik voor mogelijk had gehouden. In die zin kan mijn vader, ook al is hij al erg lang dood, wel degelijk nog als een rolmodel fungeren. Al lijkt het me vanzelfsprekend dat je als debuterend ouder vooral je eigen accenten legt. Dat je zegt: 'Ik ga niet doen wat mijn ouders gedaan hebben. Zulke goeie ouders waren ze nu ook niet.'" (lacht)

In een podcast zei u: 'Ik ga al vijftig jaar improviserend door het leven en dat wil ik ook de komende vijftig jaar blijven doen.' Zou het kunnen dat Niña dat geïmproviseerde leven van u met een bang hart tegemoet ziet? In een interview met deze krant voorspelde ze 'emancipatoire conflicten'. 'Straks zit ik met alle huishoudelijke shit', zei ze. "Ik had met Niña nooit een kind gemaakt als ik had gedacht: 'Dit wordt een vreselijke strijd.' Maar ik dacht precies het tegenovergestelde: 'Niña en ik gaan dit al improviserend heel goed doen.' En dat vertrouwen heb ik nog steeds. Ik denk niet dat onze huishoudelijke ideologieën zo ver uit elkaar liggen dat we ze niet met elkaar kunnen verzoenen."

Voor De Standaard schreef Niña een essay over de koerswijzigingen in haar leven: 'Je ruilt het één in voor het ander. Jezelf vermenigvuldigen, jezelf halveren.' Ervaart u het ook zo? Dat u zich sinds de geboorte van Alyosha zowel vermenigvuldigd als gehalveerd hebt? "Ik voel me zeker niet gehalveerd. Maar ik heb dan ook niet negen maanden lang een bolle buik gehad die plots weer weg was. Tegelijk heb ik ook niet het gevoel dat ik mezelf vermenigvuldigd heb. Als ik naar Alyosha kijk, zie ik een jongetje dat me ontroert en aan het lachen maakt. Ik denk niet: 'Ziedaar mijn vlees.'" (lacht)

Ik dacht na de geboorte van mijn zoon: mijn hart is nu dubbel zo groot. "Dat begrijp ik heel goed. En ik herken het ook: ik voel ontzettend veel liefde voor Alyosha. Maar evengoed kan ik hem tijdens het schrijven ook tijdelijk vergeten."

In De Dood In Taormina moet Zelda haar vader op een gegeven moment beloven om 'niet roekeloos door het leven te gaan', om 'er alles aan te doen om niet vóór hem te sterven.' Een mooiere belofte kan je je ouders nauwelijks doen. "Dat vind ik ook. Ik ken een vrouw die de belofte van Zelda écht aan haar vader heeft gedaan. Dat vond ik heel aangrijpend. Zeker omdat ze die belofte op puberleeftijd deed. Wat bewijst dat ze al vroeg besefte dat een mens geen eiland is. Dat je niet alleen voor jezelf leeft."

Tot slot: in uw boek zegt de vader van Zelda goedbedoelend tegen zijn dochter: 'Als je wat op de opvoeding hebt aan te merken, moet je het zeggen.' Zal Alyosha zijn ouders ook tussentijds mogen evalueren? "Ik kan me voorstellen dat ik ooit al grappend iets gelijkaardigs tegen hem zal zeggen, ja. Zoals ik mijn petekind ook al vaak heb bezworen: 'Als je het echt niet uithoudt met me, moet je maar de Kindertelefoon bellen.' (lacht) Humor maakt veel draaglijk. Je kan de zwaarte van het leven niet altijd vermijden. Maar je kan wel vluchtroutes creëren. En ik denk dat ik daar redelijk goed in ben."

We nemen afscheid: er moet van de onwillige ochtend nog wat tijd worden teruggevorderd. Bij wijze van taalkundige after party duik ik na ons gesprek nog even in de brief aan Alyosha die Grunberg vlak na de geboorte schreef. 'Tegenwoordig noemt je moeder jou 'lieve pruttelaar'. Wat mij meteen aan het werk van Charlotte Delbo herinnerde, die na haar verblijf in Auschwitz de mens een lijk noemde waarin diarree pruttelt. Lieve Alyosha, wij maken ons weinig illusies over de mens, toch ben en blijf jij ons licht. En hopelijk dat van vele andere mensen.' In mijn ooghoek welt een traan op. Ik weet niet zeker of het er één van ontroering of één van het lachen is. Dat zijn altijd de beste.

Eat your heart out, Khabib.

French outlet Mediapart report this morning as part of a new dump of Football Leaks revelations that AS Monaco owner and Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev attempted to hide a massive, illegal amount of funding into the team with a fictitious marketing contract and through the involvement of a series of offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands and Hong Kong.

The French outlet claims that Rybolovlev put in €326m into AS Monaco over a time period of two years, in direct violation with UEFA regulations, which since 2010, have stipulated that such cash injections on the part of club owners infringe upon Financial Fair Play.

Mediapart detail how Monaco agreed to a marketing deal in June 2014 that was in reality to be a yearly sum of €140m given by Rybolovlev, concealed by arranging the payment through the British Virgin Islands and Hong Kong. The scheme fell through when a disagreement occurred between Rybolovlev and Bernard de Roos, the Dutch head of Swiss-based sports marketing agency, AIM.

de Roos notably threatened to activate a “nuclear bomb”, which is understood to have been revealing the scam to UEFA, and so Monaco concluded discussions amicably to avoid any fallout.

Despite the club coming close to liquidation before Rybolovlev swooped in to save it and the subsequent attempted fraud, Monaco received a minor penalty from UEFA during that investigative cycle, of a paltry €2m.

Mediapart alleges that the CFCB Investigatory Chamber, charged with investigating FFP violations, omitted a series of disturbing findings when trawling through Monaco’s finances, in their final report. Behind the scenes, Monaco are understood to have executed a successful lobbying campaign that included a Michelin-star restaurant experience in Monaco, after which the head of UEFA’s FFP programme agreed to help prepare the club for their CFCB Investigatory Chamber hearing.

AS Monaco responded to allegations about its work with marketing agency AIM:

“As the project proposed by this company turned out to be too ambitious and ultimately unachievable, AS Monaco made the decision to terminate the collaboration with the AIM agency while informing the sporting authorities of this breach of contract.”

In the summer of 2014, Rybolovlev was uncertain about pivoting to a strategy of offloading players, which the club has since paid enormous financial dividends for ASM. In the face of FFP pressure and the fact that Monaco had run up losses of €170m in the previous three years, he decided to instruct his board to do everything in their power to abide by UEFA’s regulations.

The difficulty in winning sponsorship contracts was highlighted by Monaco’s tiny population and the club’s 18.5k capacity ground – sponsors showed little interest, underlined by the fact that ticket sales & sponsorship deals made just €14.4m in revenue for the club in the 2013/14 campaign. This was in conflict with the club’s €125m annual budget and the CFCB Investigatory Chamber began to take notice and club Vice President Vadim Vasilyev launched a campaign to find “a political solution”with the body, much like PSG and Manchester City sought out.

Vasilyev wrote to middleman Filips Dhondt, to get the head of CFCB Investigatory Chamber, Jean-Luc Dehaene to agreed to a meeting, to “spend some time in Monaco together” along with the head of the FFP programme, Andrea Traverso.

Mediapart then go on to describe a meeting on March 13th 2014, when Dmitry Rybolovlev sat down with Michel Platini & Gianni Infantino at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, in which AS Monaco’s marketing director told Rybolovlev to “build a closer personal relationship with UEFA President Michel Platini, the big promoter” of Financial Fair Play regulations. This individual proposed to Rybolovlev that he should explain the club’s project and “obviously not even give the slightest indication” that Monaco had violated the regulation.

The marketing director then astonishingly added that the Rybolovlev might “only if appropriate and to show that our president is well-informed” mention to Platini that he knew that his son was an employee at PSG – “close to a conflict of interest”.

AS Monaco have since informed Mediapart that Rybolovlev did not follow the “inappropriate” advice.

AS Monaco clearly felt that the proposed AIM marketing deal was necessary after that meeting, drawing up a contract in June 2014 under which the agency was to manage sponsorship and marketing for the club, which was to rent state of the art advertising boards from AIM for €350k a year. In return, AIM was to ensure that the club received annual revenues worth €140m for 10 years – a crazy number, more than the club’s annual spending of €125m and five times larger than the largest sponsorship deals brokered by Real Madrid & Barcelona.

Monaco structured the deal whereby if their income (excluding TV rights money) would amount to less than €140m a year, then AIM would be obligated to pay the difference. This was particularly absurd as ASM in the year previous had made just €14.4m in income, which would have forced AIM to pay €125.6m to Monaco.

Rybolovlev’s lawyer Tetiana Bersheda warned Monaco VP Vasilyev that the deal “did not make sense economically” – but was ignored. The contract was signed between June 16th and 20th 2014, just in time to be able to include a down payment from AIM, allowing Monaco to reflect such a deal in the balance sheet, meaning they posted a profit of €11m instead of losses of €116m.

The CFCB Investigatory Chamber opened an investigation into the AIM contract with Monaco did not receive the first payment that they were due, on October 3rd, of €9m. They didn’t receive it quite simply because Bernard de Roos, the head of AIM, did not have it. The deal was set-up in Hong Kong, allegedly for reasons relating to Rybolovlev’s divorce proceedings, but the final stage of the offshore set-up is arguably the most shocking. Under the investment agreement finalised on 31st October, a company registered in the British Virgin Islands, called City Concept Ventures, agreed “to invest”in AIM Digital Imaging €140m a year for 10 years, exactly the amount that the company was to pay AS Monaco. The deal also stipulated that City Concept Ventures would pay €2.2m to de Roos’ agency, his personal profit for participating in the scheme.

Mediapart allege that City Concept Ventures was a front for Monaco owner Dmitry Rybolovlev, with its contract details managed by a law firm called Neocleous, which also manages his trusts in Cyprus. In other words, the allegation is that Rybolovlev was set to use AIM as a vehicle to pump more money into Monaco, using the front of fictitious sponsorship contracts to do so.

When Monaco officials travelled to UEFA’s headquarters for their FFP hearing on November 7th, Mediapart claim that they lied about their new partnership agreement, claiming that half of the €140m a year guaranteed by AIM was made up of real sponsorship deals, when in reality they made up less than 10% of that sum.

The scheme ultimately fell through as de Roos refused to participate, angry that Monaco had sold their top players and reduced the club’s brand value.

But Mediapart claim that the real reason for the deal’s collapse was that AIM did not receive the €140m it was due to receive from City Concept Ventures, because Dmitry Rybolovlev had just fallen out with Prince Albert of Monaco over other matters, and decided to suspend all investment into the club as a result. Football Leaks documents show that Rybolovlev had indeed stopped funding the club, and Monaco were months away from liquidation as a result, likely as a power move by the Russian oligarch.

The club was forced into looking at borrowing money against the guarantee of Champions’ League involvement payments. Macquarie, the Australian banking group, refused to lend any sum until AIM began making payments to Monaco.

In the end, Monaco reached a sweetheart agreement with UEFA over their FFP infringements, a fine of just €2m, on the basis that the club had pledged to introduce a new economic model based on the sale of players and the AIM scheme never took off, with UEFA never finding out that it was merely a front for Rybolovlev to invest more money into ASM, until now…
