the fluorescent lights were starting to hurt your eyes. monotonous beeping was ringing through the air as you scanned item after item. why people would shop at 2 in the morning was unbeknownst to you. but people did shop at that ungodly hour. and you were there to work.
if you had known you would be a cashier at twenty-two, barely able to pay rent, you would’ve offed yourself rather than live what your living. yet here you were. beep. beep. beep.
awkward small talk was your friend and orthopedic insoles were your lover. one more hour, you thought. then you can go sleep. not for long though. days pass and life goes on, to miss it would be tragic.
“miss?” a low voice said from the other side of the checkout. you realized you had stopped working and had been zoned out for a moment too long. luckily, there was only one person in line.
“oh, sorry about that,” you said reaching for the first item, and continuing to scan.
“that’s okay, i imagine working the night shift is tiring,”
“sure is. that’ll be $14.39,” he handed you a twenty dollar bill and you handed him the change. you made eye contact as your hand touched at the exchange and this was the first time you got a good look at him. his hair was messy and dark circles settled under his eyes, his lips looked soft and pink and you wanted to see how they would feel against yours. boyfriend, (y/n), boyfriend.you shook the thoughts away, blaming it on the tiredness. he smiled slightly before nodding his head.
“well then, have a good night, and take care of yourself,” he said before putting up the hood of his black hoodie and walking away with a quick stride. you sighed and looked up at the large clock on the wall. 2:57, 3 minutes until your shift was over. you could’ve cried in relief. the shifts seemed to get harder and longer and more annoying. but you needed money.
you changed quickly and clocked out, stepping outside of the store, breathing in the cool autumn air. it was refreshing and you took your hair down from the ponytail it was in. now, to wait.
you sat on the curb by the parking lot and rested your head on your knees, letting the wind cool you down. you reached into the black tote bag by your side and pulled out a cigarette and a lighter. you would have to quit one of these days, but at the moment, that thought was the farthest from you. you let the smoke hang from your lips, you let out a breath watching the way the grey smoke wrapped around the stars. then, a car pulled up, headlights blinding. you smiled to yourself as you got up and ran to the passenger side.
you climbed in and attacked the driver with many, many kisses, missing him from the hours you were stuck in that grocery hell.
“miss me?” yoongi asked, chuckling.
“always, forever,” you said, throwing the cigarette out of the open window.
“such a sap.” he teased and you leaned into him as he began to drive. cool wind filled the car.
“how was it?” you asked referring to the show he had earlier that night. yoongi was an aspiring rapper, mainly doing underground shows. he’s been doing many lately, in hopes of getting signed by a label. you crossed your fingers tightly as he spoke.
“it was good, no luck yet though… soon baby,” he said, stroking your thigh, your body deflated at the bad news, “hey, no pouting.” he scolded and you smiled.
“the odds are against us, huh?” you asked.
“beating the odds is part of the fun,” you laughed at his words.
as you pulled up to the run-down apartment building you quickly jumped out and ran upstairs, he followed.
“what are you so excited for?” he asked following you into the small, sim apartment. you grabbed the collar of his shirt and brought him towards you, your bodies pressing together. you kissed him hard and fast and lead him to the bedroom.
“i missed you.”

days melded into weeks and weeks ran into months. months of barely being able to pay the bills. months of the monotonous scanning. one after the other. it was torture. the only solace was yoongi, and his soft-spoken words, and his calming touch. luckily, good news was about to come.
“you up?” he asked, and you rolled over to face him.
“of course, my sleep schedule is all messed up thanks to my stupid job,”
“speaking of, i have some good news,” you perked up at this, “someone from I.N records went to one of my shows and they’re thinking of signing me.” you sat up in the bed letting the sheets fall from you and shouted with joy.
“this is it! yoongi, i’m so happy!” you squealed and hugged him, while kissing him, happiness radiating from you.
“i was invited to a banquet they’re hosting. they want me to go to get a feel of the people and see if i mesh well. the best part is, i get to bring a guest!” he said happily, kissing you again. you smiled and then it fell from your face, a look of worry passing over you.
“what is it?” he asked.
“nothing, it’s stupid,” you mumbled, rolling away from him.he rolled you back to him and held you. he waited. “i have nothing to wear,” you said cringing at your words, but they were true. you didn’t own anything that would fit for this fancy banquet. tears began to pool in your eyes. you couldn’t even afford a new dress.
“who lives like this, yoongi? why do we have to suffer this much? we can’t even afford our bills,” you said, trying to contain your tears. he sighed and pulled you to him.
“we’ll get through it, we always have. i know,” he said, “let’s go to the mall tomorrow before the banquet, you’re off right?”
“yeah, it’s okay though,”
“let me do something nice for my girlfriend,” he mumbled looking at you, kissing your forehead, ending the conversation.

the dress fit perfectly. it was red lace and flowed down past your knees. it hugged you in all the right places and the material was soft and of good quality. you turned around and looked at yoongi expectantly. he looked you up and down multiple times while biting his lip.
“we’ll take it,” he said to the store clerk.
“wait!” you shouted before she walked away, “how much is it?”
“$140,” she said. your heart dropped, there was no way you would let yoongi waste his money on you like this.
“it’s okay, we’ll shop around,” you said quietly, smiling at the clerk, trying to hide your disappointment. yoongi asked the clerk to leave and he stood, walking towards you. he placed his hands on your shoulders.
“(y/n), what’s wrong?”
“you can’t afford this. I can’t either. this dress could be a bag of groceries, a payment for our utility bill. it’s not worth it,” yoongi frowned at your words and took money out of his wallet. he went to the front desk of the store and handed the lady the money.
“i said, let me do something for you, you do so much for me.” you nodded at the words, ignoring the guilt worming its way into your heart. you hugged him.
“thank you.” he smiled as he hugged you back.
“now, the banquet starts soon, let’s get going.” he said happily, excited to see what the future would bring.

the building where the banquet was being held was something out of a fairytale. with high ceilings, marble floors and gold detailing, your breath was taken away. your mouth opened in shock as you took in your surroundings. important looking men and women were scattered throughout the room, flutes of champage in their hands, jewels dripping off of them. you held onto yoongi’s arm as you walked through the room. you stopped a waiter passing by, grabbing a glass of champagne, dowing it in one moment.
“you’re fine, calm down,” yoongi said lowly into your ear. you took a deep breath and tried to relax, “the owner of the label is over there, let’s go say hi.”
you walked arms linked, to the person who had the fate of your future in his hands. he was dressed in a black suit and was tall, with almost perfect proportions. he turned to face you and yoongi, and your mouth opened in shock. it was the guy from the grocery store, who you spoke to all those months ago. he smiled in rememberence as he greeted you both.
“yoongi! this must be (y/n), pleased to meet you sweetheart, i’m kim namjoon,” he reached out and kisssed your hand. you smiled shyly and tightened your grip on yoongi.
“now, how did a guy like yoongi get a girl like you?”
“he’s amazing, it’s as simple as that,” you replied, namjoon chuckled.
“the girls are at the bar, let me steal yoongi away to talk business,” he said and you nodded, making your way over to the bar. you felt their eyes on you as you walked away.
the girls at the bar were far past sobriety. the one girl squealed as you approached.
“you’re so pretty, i love the dress! is it designer?” she said pulling you over to sit.
“i’m not sure,” you said and she laughed.
“you’re so funny,” she continued to laugh in her drunken state, “let’s have some shots!”
you laughed along and nodded. she reached into her wallet and frowned.
“do you have any money i can borrow?” she asked and you looked in your own wallet. a lone five dollar bill was all you had. the only money you’d have for a while. you gave it to her silently, heart heavy, and she smiled ordering the shots for you two.
hours passed and you had no idea where yoongi went. you looked around trying to find his face, so you could tell him you wanted to go home. tipsy and helpless is how he left you. you scanned your eyes around the room once more, and what you saw made your heart drop. yoongi sat in a leather chair in a corner of the room, a beautiful girl sitting in his lap. her arms were around his neck and she laughed at every little thing he said. tears filled your eyes as you ran out of the building.
you sat on the steps of the building and let the cool wind dry the tears streaming down your cheeks. you wished you could leave but you had no money for a cab. so you were stuck crying while yoongi was having the time of his life inside. you pulled out a cigarette from your clutch and lit it. you should’ve quit by now.
“that’s not good for you, you know,” a voice said as someone sat beside you. it was kim namjoon. you wiped your tears and looked at him with wet eyes. he frowned slightly.
“what’s wrong?” he asked.
“looks like i’ve been replaced,” you said sadly, motioning to the building.
“impossible, yoongi loves you, he won’t shut up about you actually, makes me jealous almost,” you scoffed at his words and continued to smoke for a moment before stepping on the cigarette.
“he needs this,” you said suddenly, “he works so hard and he needs this,” namjoon nodded in understanding.
“good thing he’s getting signed,” he said and you smiled sadly. yoongi would be signed to the label and leave you in the dust.
“let me get a cab for you,” namjoon said.
“could you?”
“of course, this is my house, you know,”
“thank you, namjoon.”
a cab pulled up moments later and you got in waving goodbye. as soon as the cab pulled away, you broke down once more. still sobbing, you walked into the apartment and climbed into the bed you and yoongi shared, dress and all. then you waited for sleep to take over.

2:47am is what the clock read when yoongi finally made his way into your shared bedroom. he looked at you and you pretended to still be asleep. he climbed in beside you and looked at your tear-stained cheeks and flushed face. his heart pounded.
“(y/n), i know you’re awake baby,” he whispered, pulling you close. you pulled away.
“don’t call me that,” you said, wrath filling your voice.
“i’m sorry baby, it wasn’t what it looked like,”
“what was it then?”
“i was trying to fit in with them, the whole time i wanted to go home with you and show you how much i love you,” he said, you looked at him, tears falling down your cheeks again.
“you don’t have to lie, and now that you’re signed, you can leave me and live the life you want,” you mumbled bitterly. yoongi sighed and wiped your tears away, he looked in your eyes and spoke quietly.
“you are my life. i love you more than anything and if I didn’t have you, then i wouldn’t want to live. never forget that. you are the reason i’m alive,” he spoke with emotion and you let out a shuddering breath, “please forgive me, i need you.”
“you’re forgiven,” you said and he pulled you into his arms placing soft kisses all over your face and neck.
“if I had enough money right now, i’d buy you a ring and ask you to marry me,”
“i don’t need a ring,”
“we don’t have money for a wedding,” he said and you looked to him placing a soft kiss on his lips.
“then we don’t need a wedding,”
“i have to give you something, we have to have something,” he said, trying to reason with you.
“i have you and you have me. that’s enough.” he smiled at your words. as you both laid there, you realized that throughout all the struggles, the tears, and unknown outcomes, you had eachother. and in fact, that was more than enough.
