I dunno if this is like the most 'productive' ask to send as it is very much me continuing to have a "FINALLY SOMEONE SAID IT/GETS IT" reaction irt being exhausted with ppl having to "headcanon" characters as lgbt to relate to them, though I've no doubt this happens in the atla fandom, I've just at least in my most current interactions with the show avoided it by almost exclusively interacting with your content, but a thing that exhausts me beyond comprehension related to the mindset of 'every character I like has to be lgbt' is when there's a character that isn't presented as and doesn't need to be lgbt, but in the end there are in fact some thematic parallels that you can string together that gives a particular lgbt interpretation a somewhat reasonable argument to exist... but instead the vast VAST majority of the fandom chooses a "headcanon" with the most SUPERFICAL reasoning possible and won't even begin to consider that it's not actually a valid headcanon and also assumes everyone shares that headcanon while ignoring the headcanon that actually has a foot to stand on

sigh...... yeah. i totally understand the urge to be like "i like them so they are [identity i relate to]" even if it that isn't explicitly supported by the text (or even contradicted by the text). people participating in fandom don't always (or even often) feel the need to refer to the text as the immutable locus of discourse, and of course it gets more complicated once you factor in paratext, such as additional media or even official commentary from the creators. often what fandom does is create its own text, which refers less to the original text itself, and more to the conjecture from the text, that is then passed on throughout fandom in a game of neverending broken telephone, in which the original text barely even serves a purpose within the fandom itself. granted, this phenomenon is far more common in fandoms wherein the source material has little to offer in the first place, and canon basically becomes a buffet of content rather than a cohesive work to be appreciated as a whole. i try not to participate in those kinds of fandoms, because i tend to enjoy art that is...good, but i have been known to be tempted by the tantalizing sins of inconsistent writing and fascinating paratextual lore (i am of course referring here to nbc's community). i understand the urge! sometimes a cool, appealing concept can simply have terrible execution (lok i'm looking at u girl) and people do go nuts for that. as for my engagement with atla, i firmly believe in referring to the text because a) i actually like the text and b) so much critical analysis of this show falls flat because people refuse to explore its nuances in favor of promoting their own, singular interpretation, a lot of which has basis only in their personal subjective tastes. (and yes, i will admit to also being guilty of this, specifically in the context of intentionally reductive, flippant jokes i've made that have gotten blown out of proportion. sigh.) so yes, i agree with you that "headcanons" ought to have basis in the text (or at the very least, the paratext), and that just because you like an idea doesn't make it true! but then again, all criticism, whether academic or...fandomized, is ultimately subjective (though the level of subjectivity within that criticism varies), which means that we are constantly surrounded by dumb stupid idiots with wrong opinions, and we just have to live with that.

ludo and getting the wand from eclipsa plotline went nowhere, the treatment of tom as a character, toffee was just a callback, episodes focusing on the spells were pointless, all of kellco? or why did jenna keep that tiny millhorse? marco getting stabbed and tom brainwashed by magic fixed instantly.. basically why did that happen if not only for hype

oh yeah and they thanos snapped all sentient beings created by magic but it's fine they used the mhc leftovers as comedy relief

-I don't know what I expected s2 to open with. but danny portal incident in more detail was not it. (also, I hate to break it to you, sam, but danny's parent's bigass ghost hunting rv def chugs more gas than those vehicles, lmao. unless it runs on ectoplasm or something...)

-WHY WAS DESIREE IN THE SEWER? HAVING TEA WITH IT DOWN THERE?? Her making the giant cow come alive is a boss move, we've almost had all of my fav animals as ghosts now <3 I also don't like how sam was expecting danny to just, haunt the place so the cars wouldn't get sold? I KNOWWW I know she's 14 (and I had a very annoying phase like this, I think I mentioned in a previous post, I GET IT) but they're HIS powers, and messing with (1) dealership will not really put a dent in sales overall because they can just move the cars to another sales lot, and it certainly wont change the industry anyway, it's more of a minor annoyance for (1) location. Also, usually people who work at car sales places work on commission, so if they dont make a sale, they don't have money to pay bills, or eat. sam baby if u wanna be an activist you need to like, actually look into these things. with as much money as her parents have, she could be doing a lot..more useful things for causes she cares about? it's frustrating to see someone with resources who doesn't know how to use them. but shes 14 so again. cannot be really upset :/

I know, he also agreed and walked into the portal. but. she made the choice to redo it SO quickly (even if it was because someone had to beat desiree) and danny, during their fight, brought up a lot of stuff sam's done in the past, meaning he was holding onto those memories and resentment was building. (I KEEP SAYING HE LOWKEY NEEDS THERAPY, BUT I THINK MOST EVERYONE IN THIS SHOW KINDA DOES) which...is a red flag? and then they didnt even GO to the party URGH I know she tried to make up for it, but it really felt like Sam fucked up and barely faced any consequences and got everything she wanted in the end. I KNOW it's a kids show obv they aren't going to go too in depth, and she undid the damage, kinda, but...I DUNNO how to articulate it but it rubbed me the wrong way.

SHIT DESIREE IS SO POWERFUL. rewriting reality powerful, basically!! appreciate her. respect her.

-aww, sam helping tucker pass the nurse's office so he wouldn't see because he's afraid of medical stuff? very sweet. I also don't like medical stuff, I've gotten a lot better at handling it tho. but seeing blood and needles still makes me feel lightheaded x_x

I want to make my own perfume, that's so cool. even if his first attempt isn't good, he's pretty consistently shown to have an inventor/entrepreneur streak in the show, so like. I can see him inventing or making something (or several somethings) that make him $$$ when he grows up :) proud of my creative son

-I know the 'creepy abandoned hospital on the edge of town' is a joke and the creepy hospital trope is so Worn Out, but in my town we actually DO have a hospital like that! my dad was born in it, but its not in use and hasn't been for, like, 20 years! it needs to be torn down but I think the city doesn't wanna pay the money. the inside is horrible, spray painted and broken glass and shit everywhere. but there's still like, rusty equipment and fucking DOLLS all over the place. the cops drive by it pretty frequently to make sure no one is like, breaking in. (because of water damage, some of the areas really aren't safe. also, asbestos, but people still go in anyway) but also, some of my town was used in a filming for a stephen king show. So it's lowkey spooky all over. just a fun personal tidbit :) to lead into saying, any hospital abandoned for any period of time is NOT safe to quarantine these kids in JKSAHDKF like I KNOW it's a ghost trying to do this, but NONE of these parents are even like, 'well, why dont we keep them in the regular, working hospital'....YIKES. this hospital looks pretty accurate to the one in town. grungy and spooky.

(how did you DIE ALSO?? im always lowkey curious about that. we know desiree died at an old age, but her ghost form is young, probably mid-20s, so I wonder how that sort of thing works...its a more mental thing, isn't it?) but ghost team-ups are always cool to see, even if ember bailed after danny took her guitar. Everyone and their mum (especially their mums, probably) knows who David Beckham is, but did you know him when he thought that curtains were not just to make windows pretty but also for hair? Did you? Because curtain becks is almost as bad as half-alive mullet becks (although nothing can beat cornrow becks in the history of what the fuck were you thinking, let’s be real).

What can I tell you about Becks that you don’t already know? He has OCD and has to have an even number of coke cans in the fridge. He took cooking classes when he was at Milan and learnt how to make pasta (a far cry from his humble beginnings in Gary Neville’s kitchen). His middle name is Robert for Bobby Charlton. He’s honestly a more down-to-earth and clever bloke than people give him the credit for and he’s really just a little boy who’s loving what he does and works incredibly hard for it? A lot of people always remember the underwear modeling (for good reason, I mean, have you seen) but in doing so they dismiss his playing days, which is ridiculous because he was so fucking good. And hey, you can be good at both football and looking like a life-sized, anatomically correct Ken doll! His crosses were exquisite, his free kicks were sublime, and the partnership he had with Gaz is still guilty of murder for killing me through old, grainy youtube videos. Also everyone’s always keen to stress that he’s never really let fame change him or the way he deals with people, which is lovely.

If you wanna kill urself, watch his retirement interview with Gary, because it perfectly sums up who he is. Boy from Leytonstone who wanted to play football. He’s so insistent on being remembered as a player that it really breaks your heart that more people don’t. No one talks about how he tried that Wimbledon goal every day in training, or how he still hits exquisite free kicks aged 40plus because he practiced them for so damn long. He’s a beautiful talented hardworking boy and I lov him!! and he’s not arrogant or anything at all he’s just so cool!

Becks left United in 2003 after a bit of a bust up with Fergie, even though they remain on great terms nowadays. It broke everyone’s heart, it broke Gary’s heart, but it wasn’t so bad for Becks bc he found a Spanish goalkeeper to frolic around with. Still couldn’t watch us play for years, though, so there!!! In 2007 he moved to LA Galaxy, in 2013 he moved to PSG, and he retired then. It was great, he got thrown into the air and shit bc he was retiring so it wouldn’t matter if he broke his legs. ffs lads.

My other favourite story of him is him telling AC Milan’s president that ‘if you want me to play for you, you’ll have to buy this club’, because we’re the best club in the world. Seriously, his love for United is so great. Sometimes he’s described as an Oldham fan, but he’s said before that it was United first and Oldham second. Did I say ‘said’? I probably meant smoke-signalled it because this bitch is so hard to get interviews with. There’s this great one where he’d just retired or something so the BBC got him to do an interview and their first question was ‘is this a living hell for you, then?’ and his response was ‘it is, really, yeah…I’ve been thinking to myself ‘why the hell did I agree to this???’. ok phil is just the sweetest purest cinnamon roll you will ever meet, ever, I mean you probably won’t ever meet him but u know what i mean. Sometimes I think he’s too sweet bc he’s such a dumb pushover. Someone once said he was everyone’s favourite Neville just by virtue of being not Gary. Which is hilarious. ANyway he’s a fuckin sweetie pie and family man who constantly refers to his kids has his babies even tho Harvey is, like, old enough to drive I think?? and he’s an incredibly good dad to Isabella especially who has cerebral palsy but he’s so!!!! supportive!!! and god what did we do to deserve this dumb boi. Ok, so he’s not the world’s most exciting or greatest player, but he was honestly rly talented and people can forget that??
