'Tis Time For Torture, Princess Episode 1: You Need To Be Watching This
Tumblr media
Do you like food? Do you like shenanigans and humor? What about great animation and direction? I'm sure most would say "that sounds like Delicious In Dungeon", and you wouldn't be that wrong. However, and this is a potentially really hot take, I think that the first episode of 'Tis Time For Torture, Princess is considerably better than Delicious In Dungeon's, and I'll explain why.
Let's lay some groundwork though. The staff on this series is surprisingly fresh. The lead director, Youko Kanamori, is a first timer in the position. Similarly, Hasegawa Mami is also brand new to being the director of photography for an entire series. There's also staff like Narumi Konno who are somewhat fresh in terms of their experience with color design. Then there's the 4 character designers and 2 cuisine designers, plus the rest of what you'd expect.
There's a lot of new talent on this series, and they're hungry to prove themselves. I really really love seeing new staff members, especially women (because of the nature of the industry), get a shot at big roles like this. And I mean, they're proving why they should be here.
Narumi's color design is very striking and full, always finding the right balance for each scene.
You'll get traditionally colored (yet still satisfying) scenes like this, but then you'll get a wonderfully novel approach to coloring in a dank and dark prison.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love the coloring on the floor, it reminds of what oil spills end up looking like, and that idea of it being "dirty" and the ground and walls being covered in that layer of grime adds a lot of fun color to the episode.
Narumi just has a lot of range, though their second ever series being The Vampire Dies In No Time certainly helps with that. However, it's a pretty clear difference in color design between the two. Where The Vampire Dies In No Time leans heavily into its fantasy and simplicity, 'Tis Time For Torture, Princess makes a case for a more believable fantasy style- idealized, even. It's far less noisy of a color palette, but it has such intense range. I really really love it.
I also really really love Hasegawa's composition. The vast majority of the time you don't really notice it there, but when the humor or situation calls for it, Hasegawa breaks out some incredible composition work which wonderfully highlight the characters involved.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, they choose a slightly different style for the color shifts in their images. You can't really tell in the above so here's some better examples.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rather than the more typical Magenta-Green shift you tend to see, Hasegawa opted for the less common/likely Blue-Red shift for their chromatic aberration. Of course, you can still pick out some greens and magentas in the more glaring aberrations, but it just shows Hasegawa's attention to detail, which I really love.
I mean, they're pulling out composition work that looks like it came from a high budget Gacha Game trailer.
Tumblr media
And the praise doesn't stop there, just look at the food. Makes complete sense why they'd have cuisine designers on board, this food looks irresistibly delicious.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then there's the incredible character acting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think it's arguably the most interesting aspect of the episode, truthfully. Largely because there's a total of 4 character designers (two main and two sub) in charge of the designs, and there was a total of 8 animation directors on the episode (1 chief, 7 regular, 1 food). Of course, 3 of those animation directors comprise half of the character and cuisine designers.
And that's interesting for two reasons. It's likely that the designers are rotating episodes. That is, 3 on episode one and then the other 3 on the next episode. And secondly, 7 animation directors is a surprising amount considering how "inconsistent" the Princess' model is (just look at all the different images in this one post). However, I strongly believe that it's 100% intentional. The designs look too good to be the product of simple off model issues, and their appearances too well timed with the events of the episode.
So we arrive at the conclusion that the animation direction and designers for this show are pulling some seriously cool stuff.
Finally, we can do storyboards. Gosh, it took long enough haha. I'll make it quick, Kanamori really prefers the super close ups to mask facial expressions and leave a lot of interpretation up to the viewer, and that sort of close up work pairs effortlessly with the obsessive focus on food.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But that's hardly the half of it. Kanamori also loves strong perspective in her layouts, and she makes that very evident when playing into the humor or intensity of a moment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
That of course also means that she imparts a fair amount of first person perspective to the episode as well. It's really amazing, Kanamori, much like many of the other high level staff members, is perfectly aware at how fluid Torture Princess is, and she expresses that wonderfully with all the different ideas employed with her boards.
And just one last little piece. The big troll/monster fight at the start? It absolutely lives and breaths Kanamori's experience in storyboarding for Ousama Ranking. You feel their incredible awareness of scale and size and it creates the feeling of a monster of unbelievable size that the Kingdom is forced to fight against.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyways, this is all to say that 'Tis Time For Torture, Princess has an all around incredible first episode that promises viewers that the series desperately wants to be one of the best of the season. And I wholeheartedly believe that.

Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill - Review
First review! This manga is an isekai manga that focuses on food and cooking, with a recent anime adaption release.
Tumblr media
The basic premise: Tsuyoshi Mukouda, a 27 year old salaryman, is accidentally summoned to a fantasy world at the same time as the intended “saviours” of said world. The others are given fantastical powers, but his only skill is the ability to access his home world’s goods through an online shopping system. He uses this skill as he travels across the various lands to cook delicious food and live a fun life!
My review: I absolutely love this manga, it’s a must-read for anyone who’s a fan of delicious food and of cooking in general. The main things that set this manga apart are a very slow-paced and chill story progression (it’s a slice-of-life!) and a heavy focus on the food itself without any significant overarching plots as of yet. I really enjoy reading a chapter or two of this just before bed, even if it does make me hungry, because the story is easy to follow and there’s no sense of “scary” tension present.
The characters are appealing, too; Mukouda is an average man but he’s definitely not without personality, and he’s someone who you think you would enjoy having a drink or two with. He also has some great interactions with the mercenary party he hires to escort him, to the point that I felt sad too when he parted with them. He travels with a great wolf companion who is a great bossy foil to Mukouda’s more plain and honest personality, as well as a slime (Sui!) who acts as a sweet childish cousin to the two. Later on, they gain other companions, but these are the two first encountered and they fill out the party enough to feel alive and exciting.
Again, if you’re looking for something with intricate plot or real stakes, this isn’t the manga for you. This manga primarily focuses on delicious food and the means of obtaining the ingredients for said delicious food, with very few snafus in between. Characters are generally honest and good in this story, and it’s mainly these fun interactions between said characters and the food that bonds them together that fuels the enjoyment of this manga.
The art style is appealing with clean and tidy lines and beautiful stylization of the food, it’s quite well paneled and I enjoyed the little gags the mangaka put in with their little doodles.
Overall: I highly recommend this manga if you enjoy slice of life and food! One of my consistent favorites, I always find myself going back to this manga, especially if I’m hungry. The anime adaption has some equally delicious food and some fun additional voice acting, too, if you’re more of an anime person.

'Tis Time For Torture, Princess Episode 2:
While not many, I heard some voices express concern for the longevity of the humor and story of this series. Obviously that concern was for naught when you have a Smash Bros parody skit in the series about torturing a princess via food. Because of that, I want to express just how much variation and potential this second episode provides for the lifecycle of this series (while also showing off how damn good it is).
So first and foremost, the pair of new characters introduced in that clip- they aren't the only ones. Alongside this devilish duo of torturers (Youki and Inki), we've also got the Beastmaster Krall, and even the Giant, well Giant. Alongside Tortura, each brings a unique form of torture and extortion to their time with the Princess.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It adds a massive amount of dimension to the running jokes of the series, really. Food is no longer the sole avenue of torture for the Princess, and her ability to relate to the torturers and expose parts of her history through their interactions expands further as well. For example, we get introduced to another character from her past in this episode, the knight Jimochi, who may or may not be a little childish.
Tumblr media
It's just a lot of groundwork and effort being put in place to ensure that the story remains fresh, funny, and enjoyable, all the while helping set the stage for character development and story progression.
Speaking of the idea of fresh, the Princess actually won a round of torture in this episode. Very inconsequential since she gave out the secrets anyways, but it allows viewers to accept the idea that the Princess has the potential to persevere and win out in various rounds against her torturers.
Tumblr media
Past all of this though, Pine Jam's efforts remain sublime in terms of expression. One of my favorite things through these two episodes is the idea of Ex as an unreliable narrator, for example. Just look at the different faces of the Princess during his retellings of her adventures. There's plenty of variation vs the more consistent styling of the present Princess. Also, I find it interesting that the variation in her face largely comes from how Ex describes the Princess in relation to whatever story he's telling.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of course, the composition is perfect at giving each moment the most emotion and impact as well. Really, all fronts of this production are so good that I just want to share the entire episode.
Tumblr media
But, sadly, I can't, so I settle for what I can get across effectively here.
Yes, it's a rather short post, but there's only so much to talk about without creating a tangled mess of thoughts and opinions when it can be summarized with one paragraph:
'Tis Time For Torture Princess is proving to be another grand slam of a series from Pine Jam. Though a risk based on the adaptation of a narrative rather than an original like DIY!!, the team behind this series has provided incredible work on all fronts to make the most of a unique and refreshing comedy series. Frankly speaking, it's a must watch.

Isekai Omotenashi Gohan - Review
This manga features a pair of sisters who get isekai’d into a fantasy world--with a twist. The younger sister is the destined hero, while the older sister happened to tag along for the ride. Her only “real” skill is cooking delicious meals!
Tumblr media
The basic premise: Two very close sisters get isekai’d into another world, with the destiny of saving the world! This manga focuses on the older sister as the main character, however, and not the destined savior younger sister. As she cooks delicious meals, she manages to grow closer to the people of this world and make some powerful allies along the way.
My review: It’s a slice-of-life cooking manga, as a lot of my reviews tend to be. The main characters are charming and pleasant, the two sisters are close and loving, and the side characters are somewhat interesting. The food looks delicious too, I especially loved how they didn’t just stick to Japanese dishes when cooking. Seeing how the main character has to make do regarding certain ingredients was also one of my favorite parts of the manga; I rarely see isekai manga like this really acknowledge how the available ingredients might be different in another world.
That being said, I really just couldn’t get into this manga. It objectively hit all the marks, but I could never really grasp a sense of the main character’s personality beyond just a “sweet helpful older sister who cooks”. She does get somewhat of her own arc regarding feeling useless and worried for her sister, but it rang weirdly hollow for me when they did try it. I unfortunately dropped it at around volume three. They seem to start plotlines with important plot-relevant characters (even a god at one point!) out of nowhere that similarly go nowhere, and it’s difficult to sense any chemistry even with the main male lead.
Overall: I recommend this if you just want to look at some good food and not pay attention to the plot or characters. Otherwise, look elsewhere.

Rokuhoudou Colorful Days Live In is Adorable!
Nothing can, and I mean nothing can beat the cosiness and comfort of a lighthearted Jdrama adaptation of manga that revolves around food! So glad to see my four idiots from manga pages come alive! Here are my favourite quotes from the series!
Tumblr media
“Because this cafe itself is like a dessert.
This cafe?
Yes.
For example, when you want to take a break at work, you’d grab a cup of coffee or some sweets. Essentially, I think its the same. You can live without it, but you’d feel a little relieved with it.”
Tumblr media
“As we get older, we say goodbye to more and more things. I knew that every living thing would come to an end eventually. But still I feel lonely. However, I’d like to think that the time we spent together and being together itself is happiness.”
Tumblr media
“Is it okay for a man to give a Valentine’s day gift?
Of course! It has nothing to do with your gender. You can give gifts to whomever you love whenever you want.”
Tumblr media
“I think it is a very positive and wonderful thing to love someone. No matter the shape or form. It’s amore.”
Tumblr media
“A cafe is not an absolute necessity for survival. If you’re just thirsty, water is fine. However, people go to all the trouble of drinking tea and coffee in a special place. It is not a necessary, but it enriches, heals, and makes you smile. I think people need places lie this to move forward in life.”— Netflix Translation.
Tumblr media
Other translated version of the same dialogue:
“This is where I belong.
A cafe isn’t necessary to live, certainly. You can just drink water to quench your thirst. But people go out of their way to drink coffee or tea in a unique atmosphere. We don’t have to exist,  but because we do, people feel enriched, soothed and have smiles on their faces. I think a place like this is necessary to keep people going with their heads held high.”
