Helios’ Astrological Angle on Jupiter Direct in Capricorn– These are the Demon Days, Heretics. Hell has come to Earth; the skies burn red as our cities and forests burn, our oceans die and the world cries out for someone to save it from its suffering. The people cry out for a hero. Trouble is, there are no more heroes- the world doesn’t make ’em anymore. No, when we need thousands of heroes to save us from our millions of problems, all coming to a head all at once, we have broken souls who fear to act and don’t believe in their power anymore. All we have is us.

And Jupiter. This is the moment of activation, the Catalyst. When all seems lost and the situation most dire, that is when The Lord of Olympos and the Original Hero is at his strongest. He is a foil of the darkest forces imaginable, and represents the heroic potential residing in us all. Wherever you have Jupiter, there you are your absolute strongest. It is the point where you never give in, where you stand up and say “No More!”. It is your greatest potential- But it needs a challenge.

We face incomparable and overwhelming odds, and fear to take action against those who seek our destruction. The situation is hopeless. The urge to give in and give up is strong and seductive. It would be so easy to write off the urge to give up in the face of this time, and hell even to self-sacrifice. Anything would be better than the true end of the world, right? Well, it’s a valid feeling. I’m right there with you in it- but what if it’s something more, the true clarion call of your soul, after struggling to be heard for so long? The urge for your death is an honest one. Lean into it and you will see its true message- That you want to stand up and grasp your future with both hands, snatching it from the grubby hands of the thieves of time. So what is stopping you from truly being in this moment?

You were once so vibrant. You could have done anything. God, those were the days! You were so full of fire and wanted to burn the world with it! But time took you down. You had so much to give, so you stopped trying so hard. You gave a bit more away than you should have. You found distractions and different ways to avoid your destiny. Then one day you woke up and just… didn’t feel like yourself anymore. You lost that spark, that soul-fire, but tried to make peace with it and keep going because… what else was there? Now, when you need it most, you couldn’t be further from who you used to be. You’re lost, tired, and have given up on the idea of your heroic moment- but it’s coming regardless of if you feel ready or not.

Over the years, you have taken on too much- the expectations of others, personality traits you found successful or admirable, their ideals and values. You have clouded your judgment, your sense of self. You have forgotten who you are and what you are meant to be. You have gotten sidetracked and forgotten your mission, why you are here now at this time. You must take these crucial days, hours, and seconds to purge yourself of these unnecessary parts of yourself. This will hurt and you will resist it, but deep down you know it must be done. You must give up who you are not to actualize who you truly are meant to be. This is where you come back, where you remember who you really are.

You must make peace with your past, end old fights with the enemies you still carry within you. Learn from your battles, remember why you fought so hard rather than giving in to them back then. It would have been easier by far to do so, so what was different? How were YOU different? What changed along the way? Identify these pain points, these crucial moments. Understand them, and regain what you lost from your losses. You need to restore your soul from its fractured state to wholeness. To do this, you must do the unthinkable- You must be willing to give up that shard of who you once were, surrendering it to your true higher self, as a magnet calling back the scattered pieces of your soul. You must be brave now, and allow the fears- of this moment, of the loss of your Self for good, and for the future- to pass over you. You are the rock in the river, the fears are momentary currents passing by.

Surrender is terrifying. The loss of control, when you have given everything to preserve and defend the last vestiges of your heroic heart, at the cost of so much? Unthinkable. Yet it is exactly what must be done. Hearts cannot survive in a vacuum, and souls cannot be hidden forever from the world. You must show that you are willing to emerge once more, that you are brave enough to face the world and take your rightful place. You must be brave, not fearless. Face your fears, name them, embrace your trauma so that it can be healed. Shutting down only blocks your progress and saps your vitality.

This is not an easy time. It will take all you have, and it will be painful- but it is why you are here. Come back to us. Stop trying to avoid your destiny and grab your future with both hands. No more hiding. You must stand and take action.

After all- If not you, then who?

Lilith in Taurus: The Agony of Hope

Helios’ Astrological Angle on Lilith in Taurus– Heretics, I wish I could take these times away from you. Truly, I wish I could make this stop. Wishes aren’t actionable though, and these times can only be endured. What we can do is alleviate some of the pain, with the help of Lilith- the Black Moon Goddess and Self-emancipated Woman. I can’t promise you’re going to like what she has to say, but that is the beauty of Lilith in Taurus- uncensored, unrestrained truth without bias or spin. She is real- and you must become real too. So real that no falsehoods can touch you, especially those of your own heart and soul.

Okay, so to endure the struggles of this age, we have held our ideals, truths, and our deepest wishes close to our hearts to keep them safe. Lilith is here to take them away, or at the very least test them. You see, holding on so tightly to what we want with our whole hearts is costing us dearly. It is causing us so much pain, and putting our hopes in the future is robbing us of our present. Yet you are still holding on to so tightly that it feels like if you let go you will die. Lilith will show you that it is not in your best interest to hold on to what, in the end, are illusions.

These days are made even more difficult by the subjective nature of reality. The world is changing all around us at all times, and we are changing rapidly along with it, often in ways that we don’t fully understand until much later when we are brought face-to-face with parts of ourselves that no longer serve us. Lilith will play this role, bringing external situations that force us to examine our internal landscape, and just how we have changed. With Uranus in Taurus as well, this will feel chaotic and will not be comfortable, especially since Taurus is a sign that resists change at all costs, and isn’t prone to introspection when they have literally any other option to take.

It is important to note that this transit is not meant to destroy or overwhelm you- What Lilith wants is to free you from the mental and emotional shackles you have put on yourself. She wants you to reject the authority that you have submitted to so that you can be free to blaze your own path. Unfortunately, the price to do so now will be high. You may have to surrender more than you are comfortable with to find your freedom. After all, to blaze a trail you need something to burn- and this time, all you have left is what you have carried with you through your descent. Surrender it so that you can become truly free, once and for all.

It is crucial that you do not allow yourself to stay stuck in the idea of who you once were, and the life you once lived. to truly work with this transit, you must face the truth of who you are and what your life is NOW. Not potentials, dreams, or ideals- but only cold, pragmatic reality. All else is an illusion, and it will destroy you if you do not reject it. This will be difficult to face, but these are difficult days, and worse is ahead. Pretending that isn’t the case will not help you. Face the horror of the truth and let it liberate you from your self-imposed prison.

You must be brave. You must embrace the pain, there is no avoiding it. You will lose things you love and you will need to surrender more than you think is fair. You will feel empty. You will need to do this for yourself, as no one can do this for you. This is your path to walk, and it is high time that you owned that. The way ahead is fixed now, and the only way out is through. You must endure. You must become indomitable. You must find a way to face the truth of your existence and what it demands of you to be truly free.

You can do this because you must. The only alternative is to allow this time to destroy you by rejecting the truth of Lilith. She sees you in the darkness, begging for help and release from the pain. This is the way. Face her, and accept her gifts of undiluted truth and the pain of freedom. Choose to love yourself enough to embrace liberation.

Mars Retrograde in Aries: The Pyre

Helios’ Astrological Angle on Mars Retrograde in Aries– Hate. Rage. Sorrow. Loss. Regret. Fear. These are the emotions permeating the air as we enter this transit, like so much smoke in the air from a world on fire- both within and without. Looking around, it is easy to think that this all is leading to the end of… well, everything. It’s easy to feel like there is nothing that can be done to save us. That our situation is hopeless. That it would be so, so much easier to just… step aside and let it all happen.

To give up.

It would be so easy, wouldn’t it? Just to roll over and die, so that you don’t have to deal with the harshness of this reality- how it seems hell-bent on breaking all of us in the most creative and devastating ways, tearing away every single thing that brought us the slightest bit of respite. Most astrologers would say that is the proper way to use Mars Retrograde; to stop pushing, stop striving, stop trying, and just stay still. To retreat so that you can live to fight another day. Except… deep in you, there is a quiet, tired voice. One that reads that sentence and recoils from it. The part of you that is indomitable.

Mars is a warrior. He never gives up, not truly. Whatever else he is, whatever the sign or house or aspect, he is a warrior. He is where YOU are a warrior. In transit, he is a call to arms. He is passion, he is force, he is the application of will to affect change- real, true, material change. He is the knife that slices the throat of the corrupt leaders, the guillotine coming down to end reigns. He is the radicalized farmers with nothing but pitchforks who overthrown the King who only seeks to enrich himself off their blood and sweat. He, at his truest expression, is a Hero. Mars dares. He is the enforcer of limits, who is there when there are no options left but conflict. When all else fails you, you turn to Mars.

And so you must do so again. This time, you must go within. The battlefield of the heart must be won before you can win any victories in this world. Your heart, however, is tired- tired of losing, tired of seeing those you love taken before their time, tired of seeing your friends revealed as your hidden enemies. Tired of betrayal, tired of everything you love going up in smoke. You are alone on this battlefield, and you have no backup coming- Not this time. Who is your enemy, though? Who are you facing here? For that answer, you must feel- and, more importantly, you must understand why you are feeling what you feel.

Once you explore the pain and anger you will find that the root of the feeling is Fear. This fear can wear many masks, and take many forms, but it is the same fears and pain as you have been dealing with since Chiron went into Aries. Look to whatever house Aries falls in your chart for this. Your fear tells you that you are not good enough, that you don’t deserve to achieve, overcome, succeed- reach your highest potential. Your fear hides behind a mask of sensibility, that it’s just not the right time for you- be logical, sensible, you can’t actually expect anything good for yourself. Worse still, you are selfish for even allowing these thoughts to come to you. You should be ashamed of your egoic desires and push them down, separate yourself from them. I say this is wrong.

During this Mars Retrograde, your mission will be to reawaken the part of you that has fallen victim to the fears that beset you. You must not allow it to rule you. You must identify it, and allow yourself to feel it without falling victim to its whispers. The awareness of fear allows you to overcome it. Separate yourself from your fear, not your ego. Release it. In the face of everything falling apart before your eyes, what sense does it make to allow fear to tell you how to live and what you are allowed to do? No, truly now is the time to fully deny fear any inroads into your mind and your heart. Right now, what we need are fearless warriors, with hearts indomitable, who are willing to do the work in order to bring us back from the brink of disaster.

As you see everything you love break up around you, losing all you love, you must accept it. You will not be able to hold on to what is already gone, what has turned to ash in your hands. You may mourn, but you must move on, for there is more to defend that needs you. As it burns, you will be freed from it. The burning is a gift. Let the flames wash over you and remove the impurity that holds you back. This will purify and re-energize you. Your attachments that no longer serve you will be removed so that you can focus on what remains. Stop fighting to defend what is already lost to you. Your only path forward is accepting your present, your reality for what it truly is, no illusions. That is the only way you will be able to fight for a future worth living. That is how you restore yourself.

Trial by fire- Leave it all on the pyre, and let the flames wash over you so that you can be reborn anew.

Asteroid Files: Psyche

Helios on Psyche: Hey, so this one was one studied by my teacher, the incomparable Karen from Ravenesque Tarot. She no longer practices, but I did preserve and build on top of her work. It didnt seem right to retrod old ground so here is her take, unedited and unchanged. All credit to her. She was the one who set me on the path of minor planets and asteroids, so her influence on me is massive.

Without further ado….

SCIENCE

Asteroid 16 Psyche is massive in size and her weight is one percent of the entire main asteroid belt.  Discoveries have shown that she is completely metallic and has no water components whatsoever. It is also claimed that her massive size does affect the other asteroids in an uneasy manner. Discovered on March 17, 1852 (a Pisces) by Annibale de Gasparis, Psyche spends near five years orbiting the Sun, spending roughly three or so months in each sign, orbit dependent.

MYTHOLOGY

The mythology of Cupid and Psyche, Amor and Psyche, Eros and Psyche, has become legendary and it is the common archetype of many the romance and romantic expectations. Psyche was mortal and beautiful, the perfect creature and the complete envy of Venus.  Completely jealous, Venus finally convinces her son Cupid, to cast his magic over Psyche so that only the ugliest and vilest of creatures would find her attractive. Turning himself invisible, Cupid flies to her whilst she is sleeping and takes pity on her, feeling she has been born too beautiful for her own safety.  Still prepared to fulfill his task, he leans over and to his surprise, she wakes up and stares him straight in the eye. Despite his invisibility, she sees him and in his shock, rather than scratch her shoulder with his arrow, he scratches his and falls madly in love with her.  From this moment on, he cannot continue his mission and reports back to his mother, Venus, who is furious and casts a curse on Psyche. It was final, there would be no husband for Psyche and Cupid brought about his own retribution in his disgust, with the refusal to shoot any more arrows of love. As the Earth starts to grow old due to the lack of marriages and mating, Venus finally rescinds and reluctantly gives into Cupid’s demands. He wants Psyche for himself, end of story.

Despaired at the lack of mortal male interest in marrying their daughter, Psyche’s parents consult an oracle to see what the holdup is. They are told to take Psyche to a mountain top, where she is swept away by the west wind and taken to Cupid’s palace. Here, the marriage is consummated and hot love is made under the cover of darkness, with Cupid’s insistence that Psyche never leave the lights on. He wanted his identity kept quiet until he was ready to reveal his true form. On returning from a visit with her two sisters, Psyche was told by her sisters that her husband was a repugnant serpent and that she should see for herself by lighting up the room at night. She took their words on board, fired up the lantern, and saw her gorgeous, winged God. Pissed off at her defiance of his wishes to maintain the secrecy of his identity until HE was ready, Cupid takes off into the shadows, never to return.

Thus begins Psyche’s journey to find the love of her life.  After seeking assistance from Ceres and Juno, who both tell her that she must face Venus, she runs about like a mouse in a wheel, fulfilling the impossible quests set forth by the furious Goddess. Thanks to the assistance of the other Gods and Goddesses, she passes her quests until the very last one – taking a piece of beauty in a box from Persephone to Venus. Not able to resist, Psyche opens the box to take a slice of beauty’s pie all for her but finds no beauty, just sleep, which rushes over her immediately.

Cupid rushes to her side, finally finding forgiveness within and brushes the sleep away. It is then that Cupid faces Jupiter with their plight and after a big meeting of the Gods and Goddesses, Psyche is brought to Olympus and partakes in the magic drink of ambrosia and becomes an immortal. Over time, and after the birth of their daughter, Venus and Psyche forgive each other and there is happiness ever after.

Apart from the intricate and romantic mythology/fairytale -Psyche means, spirit, breath, animation of life and her form is portrayed as a Goddess with butterfly wings and she is the deification of the human soul.

ASTROLOGY

To locate asteroid 16 Psyche in your natal chart, head over to astro.com and input the number 16 in the additional objects field. Keep your aspects major – conjunction, square, opposition – and your orbs tight, within 1 degree.

In the natal chart, Psyche symbolizes so many things. You have the romantic, you have the dedication to the one you fall in love with, you have the running through hoops to prove that love and you have the harsh feminine figure that is jealous and manipulative, a standing force of disruption on the path of love. The problem with Cupid and Psyche is his attempts to keep his true self a secret. The first crack in that desire started during the task of casting his magic when Psyche woke up and saw through his invisibility. She also took on-board gossip and went against his wishes, exposing him once again, cutting through everything he had in play, seeing him, despite his efforts to maintain the facade of his life role. He is displeased with this, annoyed with her and there is turmoil, but ultimately, the process to the end is worth it as everything comes out in the wash and there IS a happily ever after.

Individuals with natal aspects to Psyche have the natural ability to see through the surface garbage with new attractions. They are in search for ‘the’ individual, where the complexities of the attraction are intricate, where there are huge forces to surmount and toils to be dealt with to find that moment of pure, passionate love.  When this connection is found, there is turmoil at the beginning and much heartache involved. Yet the Psyche individual will refuse to give up, much to the annoyance of everyone else and continue to fight for the happy ending that they know is well deserved. The good thing about the natal Psyche individual is that they do gain support with their unwavering dedication within their quest to find their true lover. Whilst they face resistant from some level of parental, or authority figure, there is also the hands of guidance from those they meet on their quest. Despite the difficulties attached to natal Psyche, it is a mind blowing and ‘fated’ path to love.

In transit however, it can be a bit creepy, dependent on rulership. Everything and all of the above can apply with transiting Psyche, but only works when the feeling is mutual. Meetings whilst Psyche is on the move can have a one-sided element, where one party feels fated and the other does not. This obviously opens the door wide for stalker types and can become quite messy. Individuals can misread ‘fate’ and continue to bash their heads against a closed to romance door. By ignoring the obvious resistance and failing to take on-board the lack of support they are receiving in their chase of the disappearing individual matters naught, they continue, convinced they are meant to be together.  Obviously, this leads to continued romantic discontent and where the planets and relevant aspects would unravel more detail regards these matters.

Another element of consideration with Psyche is that of the affair expression – entering into a romantic relationship where one, or both of the parties is already committed.  There is the obvious excitement of the unknown, the clandestine darkness, the harsh, negative reaction from other parties, gossip, and more often than not, strong feelings beneath the surface attraction that can lead to a more permanent commitment at a later stage.

In considering your personal manifestation of transiting Psyche, look at romantic connections when Psyche is in Scorpio, your 10th House or the Nodes and Nodal rulers. These connections have a ‘fated’ feel about them and even if they fail to have all of the vital elements for long term connection, they are gateways for following, more placid connections with transiting Psyche.

All in all, Psyche transits are a fine indicator that it is a positive to open the door to love, or to peel another layer off your present romance. Especially when in favorable rulership. It is a great time to connect with romantic others on deeper levels and to reassess the ‘love’ agenda – decide what aspects of your approach and expression need a breath of fresh life.

Helios’ Astrological Angle on Juno Retrograde in Libra– A lot of you are feeling stuck right now, languishing in a quagmire of indecision. You don’t know which way to go, which way is RIGHT because god help you if you go the wrong way, right? Everything seems so massive, so out of reach- your goals and wants too pie-in-the-sky to ever come true. Well, that’s an illusion, and it’s mainly down to Juno, Queen of Heaven, turning retrograde in her home sign of Libra.

Juno rules quite a narrow focus of factors: Marriage, Adultery, and Power Struggles in relationships- But she also rules something even more important that isn’t as well understood or discussed: Commitment. Here’s the thing. Many of us (myself absolutely included) struggle with the concept of Commitment, and typically resign it to relationships- with settling down, a sense of finality and giving up. That’s an illusion too.

You are struggling right now because you do not want to overcommit yourself to any one path because you are looking out for one that might end up being better. You are terrified of making a mistake and it proving terminal, becoming locked into a path that you hate- whether that be a relationship, job, business venture or life change. Even if you don’t have other options yet, you are worried that something better might come along, and all of a sudden you are stuck. This is human, but it is working against you- By never fully committing to the path that you are on, you are ruining your chances for success and happiness. You can’t live in the moment and get what you want by always waiting and holding your breath for something better.

This may feel like a time to pull back and walk on eggshells but it isn’t- This is a time where you need to move forward and make progress, even if you feel you aren’t ready. We become ready as we go. This life makes us what we need to become. Start where you are, commit to your Self and your ideal future. The road will open to you, and heaven help anyone who gets in your way. You will become centered as you make your mission to become the truest version of yourself.

Juno doesn’t want you to move through this life with trepidation and FOMO, she wants you to live with passion, to give yourself over to what you want, no matter it is. Once you actively commit to your path and start walking it boldly and without fear, then and only then will you find the freedom and confidence you think you will find by hedging your bets. This is a time when you will struggle with this, and you will undoubtedly be tempted with whatever shenanigans Mercury Retrograde has in store for us this time. You will be confronted with choices that you have made in the recent past, and will have to face up to the people you have hurt with your choices. Every choice made becomes a million lives not lived, and that realization will weigh heavy on you during this time. You MUST actively work towards centering yourself and living in the present by owning the choices you have made and accepting the consequences. Be brave, Heretics. You will have to say “No” to people and situations you have outgrown, and this may be painful. You may love what you need to leave behind. Eros in Pisces: Lost in Love

Helios’ Astrological Angle on Eros in Pisces– Heretics, I know you are tired, overwhelmed, burnt out and frustrated right now. You feel lost, unbound from reality and have no idea how to get back to what you want. I would love to tell you that this transit will help you escape from that feeling, but unfortunately, it is one of the contributing factors to it- Eros, asteroid God of Passion, Sexuality, and Lust is lost in the doldrums of Pisces right now.

During this transit, you will feel aimless, worn out, and without direction. You feel disconnected from your deepest desires, and as such you feel like there is no point in living this life any further. Remember that this is a temporary transit, and this will pass into Eros in Aries, where we will feel more alive than ever. While Eros is well-placed in Pisces, this transit is a melancholy one. Eros in Pisces wants you to plumb the depths of passion and lose yourself in it, dissolving your identity and becoming so much more. There will be a pronounced desire for what you cannot have, what is out of reach or what you should not want. This includes those you have loved and lost or loved and hurt badly through your actions. Helios’ Astrological Angle on Venus in Aries– Heretics, in the past I have been… harsh on all things Venus. I didn’t like what she represented- Beauty, Pleasure, Ease and Comfort. Venus is where you feel good about yourself. For a long time, I used my badly placed Venus to hide the fact that I really haven’t liked myself or who I was… well, ever. Thankfully, after quite a lot of inner work, my views on Venus have evolved- because I’ve evolved my views on myself. I still have a long way to go, but at the very least, this is my public peace with Venus. No more bias against her.

Venus in Aries isn’t considered a good placement. Venus is all about softness and pleasure, things that are out of place in Aries’ rough and raw world of reality. In Aries, Venus brings us passion. She ignites our hearts on fire, giving us the courage to get back into the world. It can be easy to stay safe in our little bubbles sometimes, but that’s no way to truly live. You have to live with vibrancy and meaning, to stand for something and wring every last ounce of emotion out of life. Otherwise, what’s the point? Life is meant to be lived with love, and that love is meant to make life worth it.

Speaking of worth it, this is the transit when you need to not look for love from others. Focus on giving love to yourself instead. Self-love is the most crucial lesson you can learn during this transit. Hell, its how you survive the harshness of this world. It is far too easy to write off all things Venusian in the face of all that sucks about this world and our current time, but we must always try to do things that make the harshness and cruelty more bearable. You must honor your need to be happy and satisfied. Seeking happiness can feel hollow or shallow right now, but you must do it. You cannot cut off the part of yourself that wants to enjoy your life so that you can fight for a future you might hate. You need to do more than just survive. You need to live.

Relationships can be tricky during this time (for those in them) because both partners will want to put their needs first and will fight to make them honored when they feel they have been slighted. Boundaries must be clearly defined and respected by both of you.  You must remember that you are together as equals and that neither of you has more valid needs than the other. Both parties (or more) must be respected, even if they are in opposition to each other. If nothing else, both of you being slightly unhappy is better than one feeling satisfied while the other resents them for it.

Find and focus on your own worth right now. Love begins with you, and you must love yourself before you can love anyone else. Seeing and respecting your worth is self-love. This might mean leaving behind people and situations that do not respect your worth. You do not have to stay in situations that hurt you. Leaving might hurt, but staying can hurt even more. Helios’ Astrological Angle on the Lunar Eclipse in Cancer– Here we are, Heretics- on the brink of chaos, an eclipse to rival any other, in a year where fate hangs heavy around our necks like an anchor. What else is new, right? The world still turns, regardless of who is in power, and whether or not we are here to mark its turnings. We lived through the Cardinal Crisis and Mutable Meltdown, and all that came after… all of that feels like so long ago. Things felt more important and desperate then, so much bigger. The Sun and Moon, Mercury, and Saturn– Yes, it feels like the world is ending and everything that you have built is falling down around you. Accept that- but it does no good wailing and moaning about it, wringing your hands in consternation. Your choice with this Astro is to fully stand in your own personal power and accept the burden of changing the world to suit your vision or to own your impotence and accept that you cannot stop the worst of what can come; so you must, therefore, shrink your focus to what is under your purview and within your control. Helios’ Astrological Angle for Mercury in Pisces– Here we go again y’all: Time for everyone’s favorite transit- Mercury Retrograde! As if we didn’t have enough going on…

Look, it already feels like we’ve been in one long Mercury Retro since about late 2018, so this is just icing on the cake. And it will be LONG. Mercury in Pisces already tends to make us feel like we’re walking into a Dreamworld, but this retrograde will bend our perception of time itself. Days will feel like weeks, weeks will feel like minutes. Truth becomes fluid and relative, instead of fixed and objective like it is in Aquarius. For some, this will be difficult, as you like KNOWING where you stand. What is true? What is real? Where is the ground beneath your feet? Well, with this transit, you will have to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. Everything will be shifting, at all times. It will feel as though you are Alice, on the other side of reality through the looking glass.

This is an opportunity, however- Impossible things can happen now, and for the better! Again, reality is fluid at the moment- Anything can be changed, especially during Mercury Retrograde. Take this chance to make the changes that you so desperately want in your life. Yes, Mercury Retrograde can be awful and disruptive to your plans, but if your intent is not to stay the course but to make changes in the way you live your life, this is an ideal time to do so. All is not lost to you yet- You have the time to change EVERYTHING, if you are willing to drop what you already have. That is the essence of Mercury in Pisces, and the retrograde as a whole- Surrender. You can’t change the world while clawing desperately to hold onto it as it is.

Speaking of change, as always, the ability to change your surroundings must come from changing yourself from within first. So, the question must be asked- What are you holding onto in yourself that you need to surrender for good? What paradigm no longer serves you? Look to whatever house you have Mid-Pisces to Late Aquarius for more clarity on this if you are stuck. It will come to you as a whisper of consciousness, one that your knee-jerk reaction will be to dismiss outright. “Certainly not THAT, of all things” you’ll say- but it’s exactly that. That small voice that suggests something that you never dreamed of letting go of, something small and nearly forgotten within yourself- that is the ticket here.

These messages can also come through in other ways- pay special attention to your dreams, as you will experience intense and potentially even prophetic dreams. Signs and portents will abound. The veil is screaming at you to try and pay attention, to wake you up to a truth you have yet to fully realize. Write them down, even the tiniest detail can be crucial to uncovering the message in the mire. It will be difficult to make yourself open during this time, but that is exactly what you must do. Cultivate time for yourself, time to decompress from the harshness of reality and clarity will come.

TNO Watch: Arrokoth

Helios’ Astrological Angle on Arrokoth- What are your boundaries in this life, Heretics? What lines will you not cross? Which Rubicon will you do anything to overcome? These are the questions posed by the most recently named TransNeptunian Object, which happens to have the distinction of being the furthest observed body with a human spacecraft!! We have literally been there! It is so far out, in the cold and the dark, out past the boundaries of the known- and we went and had a look. That is amazing and a testament to the best of what we can be. Anyway, without further ado, here’s Arrokoth!

The Astronomy– 486958 Arrokoth is a trans-Neptunian object located in the Kuiper belt. It is a contact binary 36 km (22 mi) long, composed of two planetesimals 22 km (14 mi) and 15 km (9 mi) across, nicknamed “Ultima” and “Thule”, respectively, that are joined along their major axes. Ultima, which is flatter than Thule, appears to be an aggregate of 8 or so smaller units, each approximately 5 km (3 mi) across, that fused together before Ultima and Thule came into contact. Because there have been few to no disruptive impacts on Arrokoth since it formed, the details of its formation have been preserved. With the New Horizons space probe’s flyby at 05:33 on 1 January 2019 (UTC time), Arrokoth became the farthest and most primitive object in the Solar System visited by a spacecraft. At the time of the New Horizons flyby, the object was originally nicknamed Ultima Thule and was referred to as such in the media from the time. Arrokoth was discovered using the Hubble Space Telescope as part of a search for a Kuiper belt object for the New Horizons mission to target in its first extended mission; it was chosen over two other candidates to become the primary target of the mission. With an orbital period of 298 years and a low orbital inclination and eccentricity, Arrokoth is classified as a cold classical Kuiper belt object.

The Myth– Arrokoth was named for a word glossed as “sky”, from the Powhatan language of the Tidewater region of Virginia and Maryland. The pronunciation and meaning of the word, however, are not entirely certain, as the language became extinct in the late 18th century and little was recorded of it. The only record of the word was collected in 1610–1611 by English writer William Strachey, who had a decent ear but bad handwriting, and scholars since have had considerable difficulty reading his notes. The meanings of the words are also often uncertain, as Strachey and the Powhatan had no language in common. Siebert used comparison with other Algonquian languages to interpret Strachey’s handwriting and deciphers Strachey’s records as ⟨arrokoth⟩ ‘sky’ and ⟨arrahgwotuwss⟩ ‘clouds’. He reconstructs these as the word /aːrahkwat/ ‘cloud’, pl. /aːrahkwatas/ (cf. Ojibwa /aːnakkwat/ ‘cloud’), from the Proto-Algonquian *aːlaxkwatwi ‘it is a cloud, it is cloudy’. Given that the first vowel is long (/aː/), that syllable would have been stressed, for ARR-o-koth.

Arrokoth’s name was particularly chosen by the New Horizons team to represent the Powhatan people indigenous to the Tidewater region which included the state of Maryland, where Arrokoth’s discovery took place. The Hubble Space Telescope and Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory were both operated at Maryland and were prominently involved in Arrokoth’s discovery. In analogy, the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland is significantly associated with the Powhatan people native to that particular region. With the permission of the elders of the Pamunkey Native American Tribe, the name Arrokoth was proposed to the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and was announced by the New Horizons team in a ceremony held at the NASA Headquarters in the District of Columbia on 12 November 2019. During the ceremony, New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern justified their naming of Arrokoth, stating:

“ The name ‘Arrokoth’ reflects the inspiration of looking to the skies, and wondering about the stars and worlds beyond our own. That desire to learn is at the heart of the New Horizons mission, and we’re honored to join with the Powhatan community and people of Maryland in this celebration of discovery. ”

In acknowledgment to the Powhatan people’s significance to the Tidewater region of Virginia and Maryland, Lori Glaze, director of NASA’s Planetary Science Division, asserted that Arrokoth’s name “signifies the strength and endurance of the indigenous Algonquian people” and that their heritage “continues to be a guiding light for all who search for meaning and understanding of the origins of the universe and the celestial connection of humanity.” Prior to the ceremony, the name was accepted by the IAU’s Minor Planet Center on 8 November 2019 and the New Horizons team’s naming citation was published in a Minor Planet Circular on 12 November 2019.

Why It Matters– Okay I could not have a better representative of this new wave of Transneptunians. There is so much to unpack here, and I love all of it. Arrokoth is the boundary of what we have known, and it was given a nickname with severe Nazi connotations, and we’re not going to dive into the Nazi prevalence in NASA (thanks, Operation Paperclip!)- but its amazing that name was rejected for a traditional word to honor indigenous Native American cultures. With permission sought from Elders too! That is massively Uranus in Taurus, and I love seeing it.

There is however some good in the original name, that carries over to the new one. Pushing the boundaries of the known and seeking discovery for discovery’s sake is probably the greatest aspect of humanity. We are curious, seekers, and we want to KNOW. We seek understanding of our universe, and we are willing to put in the work to understand our place in it. Of course, that can be taken to extremes, as the Nazis (god, what is with me and Nazis today?) showed us with the experiments they carried out. This could be something to watch out for with Arrokoth, “the ends justifying the means”. For instance, the medical experiments that were carried out were barbaric, inhumane and nothing but evil- but they advanced medical knowledge and led to breakthroughs that later saved lives. I am in no way defending these actions and they hurt my very soul to know they were committed, but it is inarguable that we benefit now for it. In a world where we benefit so much from the suffering of others (who do you think makes your clothes and puts together your iPhone that needs rare earth minerals which are mined in the poorest parts of the world?) is Arrokoth asking us to look deeper at what we build our world on? Or is it highlighting our tendency to look up with our head in the clouds rather than see what is happening all around us?

Then we have to address the problems of the United States, which is built on the corpses of Native heroes. So many cultures just erased… and replaced with their conquerors. It is important to think of these things and address them as the United States goes into its Pluto Return under some horrifically dark and stormy skies while being led by a petulant tyrant who couldn’t truly lead if the perfect middle east peace solution was pissed out of Putin’s tiny shriveled dick on him. Our position in history has been attained by blood and suffering, and even if you have never committed an atrocity or killed anyone, you still directly benefit from what has gone before. There will be a reckoning, and its happening now. With the other Native Transneptunians, Sedna, Quaoar, Teharonhiawako and Sila-Nunam (Ice, Chaos, Creation, and Air respectively) in addition to Arrokoth, what will we see in the future? Uranus in Taurus will bring an awakening to the land, and as we see more awareness and power returned to its traditional stewards, anything is possible. Time will tell.

This is also one of those I would look to for a marker of astrologers, by the way. There is a certain long view that is needed, a love of the stars and planets and their stories. To truly tell them properly, there must be a love when you look into the darkness and see it made of diamonds. Mind you there is a fair amount of colonizing that happens in the astrological world, what with the army of white girls in floppy hats and secondhand tarot decks who just listened to Stevie Nicks for the first time calling themselves a Bruja on Twitter and claiming that they’re an expert in Vedic Astrology or descended from this ancient witch bloodline. This Transneptunian demands respect, so tell the stories with the reverence they’re due, and dont claim them as your own for clout. Stay in your lane, Becky.

Helios’ Astrological Angle on Juno in Virgo– Okay, let’s talk about the worst day of your life. I’m talking specifically about when you are betrayed, cheated on, or left for someone else. This is the constant subject of pop culture, I can name about 12 different songs just off the top of my head that deal with the emotions of this day. If you’ve felt it yourself, then remember how it feels. All the narratives that run through your head, and how devastated you are. Now think about Juno, Queen of Heaven and Goddess of Marriage, who is cursed to have a constantly unfaithful partner who has lived this day thousands of times. She has seen her husband (who is also her brother, but thats a whole different bag of dicks to unravel) cheat on her so many times that it cannot possibly hurt her anymore, right? Wrong, it still wounds and scars every time.

So that’s basically what you’re going to be going through during this transit. Think of this as aggressive therapy. You’re going to relive this day, or the equivalent to it, when you were brought face to face with the knowledge that no matter what you did you were not enough for someone else. Whether that is a partner, a lover, a boss or a parent, we all know this feeling. You’re going to dwell on it, obsess over it, make it your main focus. This is to confront it over and over again until you have at least made peace with it, if not completely gotten over it.

During this transit, Juno will make you feel as though your heart is being thrown in a blender. Daily, you will feel this. You will be steeped in your trauma until you are able to survive it. This will be cruel, but the answer to external cruelty is internal kindness, kindness to yourself- that is your survival strategy with this transit. This is going to be another one of those “do anything you need to in order to survive” type transits, but you will be challenged not to harden your heart right now. Your mission will be to do just that- survive.

Here’s the deal, you are never going to fully move past the trauma this transit will bring up. I’m sorry, but you won’t. But you can still heal, and learn to live with it. That will be the goal here. As it comes more and more into sharp awareness and your pain is brought up to the surface, you will find ways of dealing with it. The more engaged you are with this process, the better, and the more breakthroughs you will make. There are solutions to your suffering to be found, and Juno will help you in this- if you let her.

Helios’ Astrological Angle on Venus in Scorpio– That’s right edgy thots, fake witches, and spooky hoes, its time for your favorite transit- Venus in Scorpi-hoe! Last time this happened we all collectively lost our damn minds and had daily meltdowns, so im sure this time will be a walk in the park. During this transit, everyone and their sister will be presented with opportunities to act on their baser impulses and offered up the low-hanging fruit of their temptations served up on a silver platter. For some of you, this is no problem to indulge, as you have nothing else going on and therefore nothing to lose- so what’s the harm, right? …Right?

As a rule, you should be distrustful of anytime the cosmos just hands you something so obviously- looking a gift horse in the mouth is a survival strategy for some of these transits! But when you’re so blatantly given opportunities for indulgence when the whole rest of the year has drilled themes of denial and abstinence to further self-growth? Sis, this is a setup. Remember, Venus is opposite her rulership sign, meaning she’s in Detriment. This is not a comfortable place for her, no matter what she tries to tell you- and we all know how much Venus loves her comfort. This is not a good transit, I don’t care what some white girl on Tumblr with a floppy hat and a secondhand tarot deck tries to tell you.

Before you indulge, I want you to focus on the growth you have made up til now and think about all the ways giving in to your temporary pleasure could derail that. Of course, the question comes up that if you could lose all your growth in a moment, is it really truly growth, and I suppose that is me blundering into the central theme of the transit, isn’t it? This is a hell transit, one of a torment- albeit one of temptation rather than outright torture. Focus on your greater goals and desires, not ephemeral pleasures. Venus WANTS you to give in, she wants you to fuck up. Let it not be forgotten that Venus can easily be the cruelest god in the pantheon, bar none. Jupiter WISHES he could match her cold savagery.

While this transit is not to be trusted, remember that it is a test- it can be passed. Passing is rejecting the temptation to pursue greater, more fulfilling growth. The reward for this is Liberation from the temptation in question. Being able to reject your Achilles heel now means its hold is lessened over you in the future, making it easier to prioritize your future growth. This is a boss blocking the way to your level up. What you have been working towards is right on the other side of what you crave. You must overcome the desire to give in to your selfish needs and find something greater buried in the mess. This is a time where you have to choose, knowing something will be lost- but now you have the awareness that what you lose doesn’t ultimately have any value more than what you personally place on it.

Listen, this is not a transit to be thought through and navigated mentally. You need to feel your way through, stumbling in the dark. With all the other potent Astro in the sky right now, everything can feel overwhelming, and outside your control. Luckily this is where Venus Scorpio actually helps, as it helps us feel more confident in our personal power by stripping away the illusions that we are lesser beings. This transit challenges us to remember that we are more powerful than we realize, having to forget our true magnificence in order to make it in this world. With Venus in Scorpio, it is temporarily easier to remember and reclaim our true power as divine beings living a human life.

Helios’ Astrological Angle on Mars in Libra– Oh good, this asshole. So, in a time when we need to make sweeping, drastic, and deep overhauling changes in our lives and personalities– we get Mars, God of Force, Action, and Effort in the sign of his detriment, where he can be lazy and tell us action isn’t really necessary. This is not optimal. I’m praying for a retrograde right now, but I know his isn’t till next year. Fine.

Okay, so the issue is this- as you were processing and healing from the end of last year and all its devastation and traumas, you wore your heart on your sleeve and you were open about the issues you faced. I’m sorry to say no one was supportive in the way you needed them to be, and you were punished for it in the early summer. This is past. Now we face a much harder task- facing our demons ourselves, choosing to descend rather than having it forced on us, and doing it alone… but this time you must also be outwardly fake about what you are dealing with. I KNOW, I’M SORRY. THIS IS NOT WHAT I WANT EITHER. I hate giving this advice because it’s terrible and Mars is being a dick.

Listen, here’s the thing… no one wants to hear about your issues and traumas. That’s the harsh truth, everyone is fighting their own battles. Everyone has their own shit to deal with. No one wants to shoulder your burden right now, it’s yours to carry. Your mission is to carry all this and make it look effortless. Honestly, that is the hardest part of the current Astro configuration, not being honest about what you’re going through. Save it for your therapist (or, better yet- your astrologer!). This is important because NO ONE can do this without breaking down. A lot. Find someone you can break down to or somewhere you can go to safely do it. This will cause a lot of internal strife and I’m sorry I have to tell you to do this, but you will not be able to make progress if you can’t fake that you have it all together during this transit.

Think of this as a level-up from the Warrior God. You survived the last raid (albeit with 1 HP left) and now this is the next wave incoming, but with an added challenge. The game’s no fun if you have to do the same thing a million times in a row with no real change, right? Listen I know I’m grasping at straws but its all I got here.

Also, this is not the time to seek balance. That whole idea of Libra being balance is dumb anyway, balance is a lie- balance isnt growth. Growth comes from messy, imbalanced imperfection. It comes from trying. You have to try during this transit, but you will need to try to keep it together. That will be the struggle. If you approach this transit seeking balance you will fail. You must acknowledge some things have no balance, and require either maximum effort or limited ones. Your public face will need to be on, and when you are in public you need to be able to put aside your traumas and pain simply to survive. In private you will not need to keep a facade and in fact you must rip it off daily in order to heal within.

You will have to force yourself not to run from the deeper truths and experiences that Pluto, Saturn, and Mercury are trying to instill within you. Mars will want to avoid any conflict, especially self-conflict. You will be tempted to keep everything on a surface level, and that can actually be a boon to your person to person interactions, but you will want to shout out everything that you’re going through. Conversely, you will want to avoid going too deep within yourself because, god you’re tired. So, so, tired. Do you really have to keep delving like this? Yes, you do. Keep a facade outside and keep it real within. That is how you rock this transit.

Helios’ Astrological Angle for the Lunar Eclipse in Capricorn– Okay. You’ve been through a lot to get to this point. You are tired, angry, and in pain. I get it- I so get it. You can’t collapse just yet though, there’s more work to be done. This Eclipse demands a lot from you, and it is your job to rise to meet the challenge. Are you willing to answer the call this time? Or will you let your moment pass you by? One way or another, Heretics, this Eclipse will change you. Let’s dive in.

The Sun, Moon, and Pluto– This is going to be a motherfucker of an Eclipse y’all. Like it will make Oedipus blush. It will be the equivalent of an emotional Chernobyl for you wherever it falls in your chart- and this time I need you to give yourself permission to fall apart. You do not have to stay strong for this one; instead, you need to release what your gut tells you to hold onto with all your life. It is conjunct Pluto after all- are you really going to cling so hard to the dead parts of yourself that you are going to outlast the Lord of Hell? Just let go. Let go of your fears, release your insecurities of your worth, of how you are undeserving of what you want. What good are they to you at this point anyway? What good has holding yourself back from reaching your fullest potential EVER brought you? Surrender your desire to shrink back from the world, to hide who and what you really are. Its time to rip off your mask and shine, baby.

These times need heroes y’all, and it’s high time you stop acting like you’re not one. This Eclipse is the moment in the Buffy finale where they choose to go from one main hero to create an army of every person who COULD have been a hero, but fate hadn’t called yet. This is the call. This is the moment. We cannot wait for fate to get around to making us its chosen champions, we don’t have time for that. It is time we shove them out of the way to choose ourselves and become the heroes that the times demand. Everyone is sitting around, waiting for someone to step up and draw a line- They’re waiting for you. Show them the way. Make them see. Be the example. Give them someone to believe in so that they can believe in themselves. Be brave, and face the world with courage and pride in yourself, not with fear and insecurity. Remember that you are magnificent- inspire others to believe in their own potential.

Why have you been thrown all of these challenges and given no other option than to overcome them if not to make you see with your own two eyes that you are truly and utterly worthy of this life, of everything that you want and desire, and to believe in your deepest soul that YOU are magnificent? What other purpose could there possibly be for all of this? YOU are where you are supposed to be, you are WHO you are supposed to be, and you have DONE all that you have to bring you to this point. This is your life, it is your time, and all you have to do is close your eyes, become still in your soul without fear or pain and say yes to your destiny.

If you change the narrative (the entire point of Jupiter in Sagittarius, for the record) to give your pain a purpose, letting it shape you and expose your potential then you suddenly shift from victim to Hero. You are not a side character in your life. Do not allow your fears to shunt you into living a life that is less than you want it to be. Stand up, take responsibility for where you are and who you have become, and turn it into your superpower. Let it fuel your growth and transformation into who YOU want to become, not what the world says you should be. This life is your own and its high time you make it what you want. TNO Watch: Eris

Helios on Eris– So, somehow in my accounting of the Transneptunians, I managed to overlook the biggest, most prolific of them all (however not the first to be discovered past Pluto!)- Eris! Now I can’t rightly finish off the archive without her, now can I? So without further ado, let me formally welcome back the most controversial dwarf planet back into the party! Gird your loins, y’all

The Astronomy– Eris is the most massive and second-largest (by volume) dwarf planet (and plutoid) known in the Solar System. Eris was discovered in January 2005, and in September 2006 it was named after Eris, the Greek goddess of strife and discord. Eris is the ninth most massive object directly orbiting the Sun, and the 16th most massive overall, because seven moons are more massive than all known dwarf planets. It is also the largest which has not yet been visited by a spacecraft. Eris was measured to be 2,326 ± 12 kilometers (1,445.3 ± 7.5 mi) in diameter. Eris’s mass is about 0.27% of the Earth mass, about 27% more than dwarf planet Pluto, although Pluto is slightly larger by volume.

Eris is a trans-Neptunian object (TNO) and a member of a high-eccentricity population known as the scattered disk. It has one known moon, Dysnomia. As of February 2016, its distance from the Sun was 96.3 astronomical units (1.441×1010 km; 8.95×109 mi), roughly three times that of Pluto. With the exception of some long-period comets, until 2018 VG18 was discovered on December 17, 2018, Eris and Dysnomia were the most distant known natural objects in the Solar System.[

Because Eris appeared to be larger than Pluto, NASA initially described it as the Solar System’s tenth planet. This, along with the prospect of other objects of similar size being discovered in the future, motivated the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to define the term planet for the first time. Under the IAU definition approved on August 24, 2006, Eris is a “dwarf planet”, along with objects such as Pluto, Ceres, Haumea and Makemake thereby reducing the number of known planets in the Solar System to eight, the same as before Pluto’s discovery in 1930. Observations of a stellar occultation by Eris in 2010 showed that its diameter was 2,326 ± 12 kilometers (1,445.3 ± 7.5 mi), very slightly less than Pluto, which was measured by New Horizons in July 2015.

The Myth– Eris is the Greek goddess of strife and discord. The most famous tale of Eris recounts her initiating the Trojan War by causing the Judgement of Paris. The goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite had been invited along with the rest of Olympus to the forced wedding of Peleus and Thetis, who would become the parents of Achilles, but Eris had been snubbed because of her troublemaking inclinations.

She, therefore (as mentioned at the Kypria according to Proclus as part of a plan hatched by Zeus and Themis) tossed into the party the Apple of Discord, a golden apple inscribed Ancient Greek: τῇ καλλίστῃ, “For the most beautiful one”, or “To the Fairest One” – provoking the goddesses to begin quarreling about the appropriate recipient. The hapless Paris, Prince of Troy, was appointed to select the fairest by Zeus. The goddesses stripped naked to try to win Paris’s decision and also attempted to bribe him. Hera offered political power; Athena promised infinite wisdom; and Aphrodite tempted him with the most beautiful woman in the world: Helen, wife of Menelaus of Sparta. While Greek culture placed a greater emphasis on prowess and power, Paris chose to award the apple to Aphrodite, thereby dooming his city, which was destroyed in the war that ensued.

Another story of Eris includes Hera and the love of Polytekhnos and Aedon. They claimed to love each other more than Hera and Zeus were in love. This angered Hera, so she sent Eris to wreak discord upon them. Polytekhnos was finishing off a chariot board, and Aedon a web she had been weaving. Eris said to them, “Whosoever finishes thine task last shall have to present the other with a female servant!” Aedon won. But Polytekhnos was not happy by his defeat, so he came to Khelidon, Aedon’s sister, and raped her. He then disguised her as a slave, presenting her to Aedon. When Aedon discovered this was indeed her sister, she chopped up Polytekhnos’s son and fed him to Polytekhnos. The gods were not pleased, so they turned them all into birds.

Eris has been adopted as the patron deity of the modern Discordian religion, which was begun in the late 1950s by Gregory Hill and Kerry Wendell Thornley under the pen names of “Malaclypse the Younger” and “Omar Khayyam Ravenhurst”. The Discordian version of Eris is considerably lighter in comparison to the rather malevolent Graeco-Roman original, wherein she is depicted as a positive (albeit mischievous) force of chaotic creation.

A quote from the Principia Discordia, the first holy book of Discordianism, attempts to clear up the matter: One day Mal-2 consulted his Pineal Gland and asked Eris if She really created all of those terrible things. She told him that She had always liked the Old Greeks, but that they cannot be trusted with historical matters. “They were,” She added, “victims of indigestion, you know.” Suffice it to say that Eris is not hateful or malicious. But she is mischievous and does get a little bitchy at times.

The story of Eris being snubbed and indirectly starting the Trojan War is recorded in the Principia and is referred to as the Original Snub. The Principia Discordia states that her parents may be as described in Greek legend, or that she may be the daughter of Void. She is the Goddess of Disorder and Being, whereas her sister Aneris (called the equivalent of Harmonia by the Mythics of Harmonia) is the goddess of Order and Non-Being. Their brother is Spirituality.

Discordian Eris is looked upon as a foil to the preoccupation of western philosophy in attempting to find order in the chaos of reality, in prescribing order to be synonymous with truth. Discordian Eris teaches us that the only truth is chaos and that order and disorder are simply temporary filters applied to the lenses through which we view the chaos. This is known as the Aneristic Illusion.

Why She Matters– Okay, its no secret that Eris is fantastic and I love her. Yes, Eris is chaos, but you know what? So is life. You can try and plan and make things nice and neat, but then the Universe comes through like a toddler who just learned how to walk, hellbent on getting to the other side of the room- consequences be damned. Eris is that universal action. Make no mistake, she is a destroyer and lives for the battlefield, but she also loves to dance, finding the beat in the deaths of men clamoring to prove that they are right to unseen forces (but most of all, themselves). If Mars ever did drag, she would look like Eris (and you bet your ass there would be death drops and shablams like you’ve never seen before!)

When people (read: hecklers) try to come at me with proof that astrology works (but who don’t have their birth time handy for me to utterly eviscerate them) I point to Eris. I remember when she was discovered, and the excitement that her unveiling brought to all of us. And then I remember, quite vividly, the fallout from the IAU decision after she was named but then relegated to dwarf planet status. It was a repeat of the Judgement of Paris myth! She was snubbed, yet again, by the authority, and Pluto was caught up in the fallout as collateral damage just because she was bigger than him (men and size issues, amirite?). And the authority paid for it in the end! Even total luddites who don’t follow the whirling and twirling of the planets (dwarf or otherwise) have a strong opinion about the decision. It made people care about these crazy space rocks, which brings me great happiness.

We aren’t all running around fighting all the time in this modern age, so how do we look at Eris now? A primal force of chaos doesn’t really mesh with our modern sensibilities- or does it? One of the more enlightening views on Eris comes when we consider her in terms of Justice, especially against any kind of oppressive authority. This can be seen in almost every major social movement to demand better treatment, to deny an oppressive ruling class its ability to exploit those below it- Stonewall, May Day, Ferguson, Rodney King, The Arab Spring…. Hell, even the Boston Tea Party! Eris is that urge we feel to stand our ground and refuse to roll over to the bad guys. Eris is the urge to fight for our rights. Yes, it can get violent- but better short violence that changes things for the better than the long, slow violence of inaction. Far better to live boldly and bravely. More commonly though, Eris spurs us on to fight with our racist uncles on Facebook or send petty gifs in the group chats calling out our friends for being slutty… but like, in an endearing way. In fact you could solidly call Eris the Goddess of Shade. Hey, not every action can be a revolutionary one after all- sometimes you just want to get brunch with your girls.

Eris isnt just Chaos, by the way- she also represents Strife. More specifically, what you are striving for. What do you want out of this life? If you are lost, look to Eris and she can help you find your way when you’ve lost it. Mind you, you’ll be in for a HELL of a trip with her (more Thelma and Louise than Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas- That’s solidly Arawn territory) and you might not survive, but at least you’ll know!
