2024 is a really future sounding year. 2023 didn't sound as futurising but 2013 did, imo. 2015 doesn't but 2025? Boy howdy. 2026 doesn't sound like a real year just a number string. 2027 is pretty futuristic, 2028 should be but isn't. Considering the year 2029 makes me feel old, stretched thin like butter over too much bread.

I had been introduced to Afrofuturism a couple of years ago through a music video director Chelsea Odufu at a school event. Her works focus on Afrofuturisism andd she carries those elements in various different visual aspects. She focused on a video she directed for Masego, an artist I have listened to before. She showed us the music video and discussed Masego’s percussion being an old African instrument that was integral to his music and to the visual she created. It was very small details that she focused on, it was fascinating to see the explanations for her creativity. Her discussion of Afrofuturism and how she has made a career out of it piqued my interest. I remember she said that afrofuturism allows for Black people to express themselves freely without the fear of judgement and connecting back to their ancestors. As I’m a spiritual person and Mexican, I found the statement of reconnecting with their ancestors incredibly moving because in my culture, we try to do the same by honoring the foods, activities, locations, etc that our past ancestors loved. That’s why I enrolled into this course when I saw it was open. I keep hearing Afro-futurism be used online so I know it’s important to people and the expression of African stories in science fiction realms. I have little to no background on futurism aside from what I learned that day, which was the intersections of history and future.
With the few weeks of being in this class, I have realized that Afro-futurism isn’t only shown in visual aspects, but it is in music through sounds and in literature by words and thoughts. It’s also in movies through actions and behaviors, it is a lot bigger than what I thought it was. We were told afrofuturism is not exclusive to African people only, which I found interesting as that is what I mostly see online but I do understand the main concept of it being used cross cultures.
I’m excited to learn more about how Afro-futurism has helped with the expression of stories in the past and in current times. Science fiction has always been one of my favorite genres of movies and books, so I’m excited to add in another element to sci-fi media that I engage in. Although I will have to learn to manage time as though this class gives us the luxury of being asynchronous, it is heavy in content that it has been hard to balance with my research courses. However, I’m excited to learn what I can for the remainder of the quarter about Afro-futurisism so I can become a better analyzer of media I consume.

A subjective collection of film score composers (2/4): Wendy Carlos, an electronic music pioneer in cinema
Born Walter, Carlos was early in her life attracted to music and above all to crafting objects such as computers and other electronic devices. She studied physics and music at the universities of Brown and Columbia. Afterwards, she assisted Leonard Bernstein in 1965 and met Robert Moog in 1968, with whom she worked on the development of the modular synthesizer.
Released this same year, her debut album Switched-On Bach sold more than a million copies and became the second classical album to go platinum. She won several Grammys in 1970. It consisted of pieces of Johann Sebastian Bach played with a Moog synthesizer. This use of synthesizer can announce bands such as Electric Light Orchestra, which combined electronic and classical sounds.
Coming out in 1979, Wendy Carlos is one of the first public personalities to disclose her physical transition and to assume her transgender identity.
She started to composed for cinema with A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess’ novel adaptation from 1971, directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film deals with Alex DeLarge, the leader of a gang who participates in “ultra” violent activities. During one of their operations, Alex is arrested and condemned to fourteen years in prison. Two years later, he volunteers for the experimentation of Ludovico technique, which consists in aversion therapy. The films of sex and violence he is forced to watch are accompanied by an electronic version of the 9th Symphony, by Alex’s favorite composer, Beethoven. His brutal revulsion confirms the effectiveness of the treatment.

A Clockwork Orange, Stanley Kubrick (1971)
Of course, the well-known opening shot effectively sets the pace, as the camera does a reverse travelling, from the face of the protagonist staring at the audience to the whole extremely bizarre set up. And on the top of all, we experience an electronic version of Henry Purcell’s March for the Funeral of Queen Mary.
This work is fascinating in the sense that it is atemporal. Each piece of music identified as from the past is futurised by the synthesizer. The world depicted in the film is also in this breach. The way violence manifests seems unreal, as well as Alex’s destiny. Still, the whole scenery is really anchor in the known reality of the era. In between anticipation and satire, the film is crossed by Alex passion for classical music. That is why the fact that Alex is disgusted by the electronic version of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony seems to suggest it’s rather grotesque than avant-garde.
After that, she collaborated for a second time with Kubrick on Shining, which is also an adaptation; here from Stephen King’s horrific novel. Nevertheless, on the global soundtrack she proposed to the director, he only kept one score. Indeed, the film opens on Carlos’ memorable reinterpretation of Berlioz’s “Dies Irae” segment of his Fantastical Symphony. Actually, it seems to encapsulate the essence of the film: as the little car progresses through the Going-to-the-Sun Road, Montana, the music accompanied by some curious sounds foreshadows the haunting of the vast Overlook Hotel.
Nonetheless, their artistic disagreement put an end to their work together.

The Shining, Stanley Kubrick (1980)
Her last work was on Tron, directed by Steven Lisberg, produced by Walt Disney Company and released in 1982. Her composition for this one is really interesting: most of the film takes place in the ENCOM mainframe cyberspace, but some scenes are in a realistic setting. Therefore, the orchestration is differentiated, by the addition of the synthesizer for the virtual world. Indeed, she didn’t wanted to propose uniquely electronic music, which led to a collaboration of digital synthesizers with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Thus, the music tend to calm the rather innovative aspect of the visual, creating the ideal balance for the audience.

Australian F1 driver Daniel Ricciardo and his Olympic snowboarder mate Scotty James say they always think long and hard about the risks of promoting the wrong thing. And as brand ambassadors for crypto exchange OKX, that no doubt was at the forefront of their minds when FTX collapsed and markets crashed — mere months after they signed on.The risks then became all too apparent in the acres of negative publicity and lawsuits over comedian Larry David and NFL quarterback Tom Brady’s endorsement deals with FTX. Even Hollywood nice guy Matt Damon faced blowback from everyone from South Park to Stephen Colbert as a result of his Superbowl commercial for Crypto.com, encouraging normies to buy crypto right before the market crash.Daniel Ricciardo, Haider Rafique and Scotty James onstage at Token2049.Crypto already had a pretty mixed reputation when Ricciardo signed up in May 2022, and he admits it took a while to get comfortable with the idea. "I've been in the sport a long time where for sure, a lot of things get put in front of me, which is exciting.”“But you kind of also learn when to say ‘no, that's not right for me,’" he told Cointelegraph at Token2049, nursing a fractured hand that has taken him out of Sunday’s Singapore Grand Prix.Ricciardo is one of the most popular F1 drivers in the world and has a team that ensures he doesn't get into hot water. Minders struck out direct questions about FTX ahead of the chat, required approval for photos of the interview, and bustled him away after ten minutes for his next appearance. Trust in crypto wavered after FTX blow-upOKX’s strategy to become the “first crypto lifestyle brand” was driven by Chief Marketing Officer Haider Rafique. The cryptexchange signed multi-million dollar sponsorship deals with sports franchises like F1 team McLaren and United Kingdom Premier League team Manchester United. The streets of Manchester have officially been futurised by OKX and @mancity fans Explore Manchester and check ‘em out Arndale and 60 ShudehillBetter Future: Game On! #OKXManCity pic.twitter.com/Hae3Ug4n1f— OKX (@okx) August 28, 2023 "We certainly get those calls," Rafique said, "from McLaren or Man City. ‘Hey, is everything all right over there? Like the industry looks a little shaky?’ And we have to understand and put ourselves in their shoes and respond accordingly." He says the exchange’s monthly proof of reserves reports are a big factor in gaining trust. But even after getting his old team on board (Ricciardo now drives for AlphaTauri) Rafique still needed to gain the F1 driver's trust. “It wasn't a transactional relationship, it was a personal relationship,” he said. Ricciardo explained it worked as Rafique did “a really good job to bring us in on personal level to educate us and inform us.”“I was curious and wanted to learn — I had a lot of comfort going in with them. I've seen enough now to know that this is good for me and it's safe for me to kind of get involved in this." Unfortunately, as Damon’s ill-fated Crypto.com deal shows, due diligence can only take you so far. The exchange wasn’t accused of anything and didn’t collapse but Damon’s reputation took a hit as markets crashed. "The thing that was probably blowback for them was the message and it was poorly timed: ‘Fortune favours the brave’ and then the brave crashed," said Rafique. As a mate of Ricciardo’s, four-time Olympian Scott James already had a personal connection when he signed on with OKX and was already interested in NFTs. But it still would have been a shock when FTX collapsed a month later. Fans line up to get pics with Daniel Ricciardo and Scotty James at Token2049 Until you understand something 100% at its full capacity, naturally you're going to have reservations," he said, but added that the platform's attempts to simplify and educate about crypto and trading put him at ease. "I built trust over time with doing that and we feel pretty good about it,” he said. “But to say 12 months ago, I would say the same thing? No.
"James said that snowboarding was a lifestyle choice that appeals to a "young demographic" and crypto is too due to its decentralization.I think my generation and younger than me are the ones that are really going to change that narrative for investing whether it's in cryptocurrency or other investments moving forward. While the pair joked about releasing NFTs during their onstage appearance at Token2049, that’s not going to happen until markets recover, said Rafique."For their NFT's it's certainly not going to be about a speculative asset. It's going to be baked into how we can bring their fans closer to them through this asset that they can own. So I don't think it's going to happen anytime soon.” Source

Day Eight - Friday, March 31
Regrettably, we finally left La Foce this morning, but the wine trip just got better. We drove 2 hours to Ornellaia. Ornellaia is an Italian wine producer in the DOC Bolgheri in Toscana, known as a producer of Super Tuscan wine. Ornellaia is considered one of Italy's leading Bordeaux-style red wines. Now, the wine game just got elevated. They specialize in art and wine, similar to our previous visit to Mouton Rothschild in France, and their winery is almost futurisic. They took us on a tour of their grounds and their winery, including a visit to their art musuem. The wine tasting was definitely one of the best Super Tuscan wines that I have tasted.
After our tour, we made the short drive to Volterra, our city for the next 3 nights. Like most hill towns in Tuscany, it is a medival city meaning that large walls surround the city up on a large hill. The views are incredible. Laura took a much needed nap and I walked around town to survey the city.
For dinner, we had reservations at Ristorante Enoteca Del Duca, a Michelin rated restaurant. The food and service was fantastic. The owner's daughter ran the dining room and all of the staff was very friendly and attentive. We ate wild boar pappardelle for our pasta and we shared prawns in a brandy sauce. We finished our meal with Grappa and a trio of metaphysical panna cotta balls with different jams. The balls exploded in your mouth. For our wine, we drank a 2020 Dalleo from Bougheri. It was 80% cabernet sauvignon, which is closer to the Super Tuscan wine. A great price point wine.
We thought we might get to bed early tonight, but it was nice to stroll home in the City, rather than get in our car and drive back to the country.
Tomorrow, we will go to the Volterra market and then drive to San Gimignano.
Ciao.
