some annie headcanons

pre games: annie had always been a softspoken, shy, and kindhearted girl. always soft in heart and person. she never had many friends, often kept to herself and spent most of her free time reading books, playing in tidepools, and living in her own imagination. she had always been seen as strange or quirky, but never with a mean bone in her body. i like to think her family has a small bakery and she often helps out there.

the break: its pretty easy to say that annie suffered a psychotic break during her games. she has always been a very nervous and extremely anxious individual and preparing for the games was a whole other struggle in itself; but then to be forced to witness her partner's beheading... it was the tipping point for annie.

survival: annie's break did help her to escape the other tributes as it started with a sudden outburst of fear, anger and confusion. this also causes her to run away and hide. in hiding, she experiences hallucinations, delusions, and catatonic states. she was often recorded carrying conversations with finnick (who she had a small crush on and attached herself to prior to the games), her mother, or relieving childhood experiences / memories / senses. things only seemed to get worse as she refused to sleep or close her eyes at times, swearing that every time she closed her eyes she can see the beheading all over again... the flood, in a way, woke her up ― however, not without almost drowning first. it took a while for annie to gather her senses and the mind to swim. she was tired, running off of little to no sleep for days and fighting the urge to give in... it didn't help that the gamemarkers just waited... making annie swim and/or tread water for gods know how long... until they decided to drain the arena, and annie, being the sole survivor, declared the winner.

post survival: contrary to what we saw in katniss' experience and the other victors, annie is not a fan favorite, and is quite frankly rather disliked by the capitol. this is truly simply because they find her boring. they thought her game was boring. and her win boring. the most interesting thing to them was seeing her break down. and that's gross. either way, not many people were excited to see annie crowned the victor. it doesn't help that annie is often triggered by someone reaching for her head and/or neck. any attempt they had at even trying to crown her resulted in a triggering event for annie.
