Von der Götterspeise zum Unkraut

Nektar und Ambrosia haben ihren etymologischen Ursprung in der griechischen Mythologie. Abgesondert von jeglichem realen Bezug, werden sie darin als Götterspeisen beschrieben. Den realen Entsprechungen zugeteilt wurden sie erst im 17. Jahrhundert, als sich Gelehrte die Natur in Arten und Gattungen einzuteilen aufmachten. So ist aus der einen Götterspeise der Ausgangsstoff des süssen Honigs geworden, worin sein etymologischer Ursprung noch nachklingt, während er bei der anderen, als Bezeichnung eines eingeschleppten Unkrauts, das allergische Reaktionen hervorruft, völlig verklungen ist. Es ist als ob Ambrosia von seiner ursprünglichen, und damit wahren (?) Bedeutung gekappt wurde – und zur reinen Spielmarke, zur Bezeichnung eines bestimmtes Dings, verkommen ist. Dass dieses Ding den Namen einer Götterspeise trägt, erscheint dabei völlig willkürlich – und ein Zusammenhang, der angeblich im intensiven Geschmack des Krautes liegen soll, erschliesst sich einem nur schwer – wenn überhaupt. Auch dass sich der Namensgeber wichtig machen wolle, reicht als Erklärung nicht hin, weiss heute doch kaum jemand irgendetwas über den „Entdecker“ jener Pflanzenart. Es ist als ob Ambrosia vom Göttlichen in ein Weltliches herabgesunken ist und dabei jegliche Erinnerung an seinen geistigen Ursprung abgeworfen hat. So wie die Sprache überhaupt – frei nach Benjamin – sich von seiner onomatopoetischen Bedeutung losgelöst hat und zur reinen Zeichensymbolik verkommen ist. Der Klang von Ambrosia, der allein noch diese ursprüngliche Bedeutung transportiert, steht dabei im unüberbrückbaren Widerspruch zu seiner realen Bedeutung, die das ursprünglich Göttliche wie das Unkraut, das es bezeichnet, überwuchert hat.

Was der etymologische Ursprung im Mythos ebenfalls zu Tage fördert, ist ein gewisses Primat des „A priori“ im erkenntnistheoretischen Bereich. Nicht das dieses das „A posteriori“ vorweg zu nehmen vermag; dies wäre eine reichlich vermessene These, aber das „A posteriori“ bedient sich des „A priori“ um seinen Erfahrungsgegenstand zu bestimmen. Und so wirft das Beispiel von Nektar und Ambrosia ein Schlaglicht auf den Ursprung aller Erkenntnis im Mythos. Dieser ist, als erste Erklärung von Geist und Welt, allein im ersteren angesiedelt – und weisst damit auf den geistigen Ursprung von Erkenntnis schlecht hin. Zuerst war das Wort, wie es in der Bibel heisst, und damit  der Geist, der die Welt schuf. Dass dies empirisch betrachtet Mumpitz ist, tut nichts zur Sache. Die geistige Prägung dient allemal als Namensgeber und damit auch als Schlüssel des zu Erkennenden – auch wenn dieses, im modernen Sinne, der Empirie entstammt – und bedarf  –, um überhaupt als solche gelten zu können. Erkenntnis ist immer Erkenntnis von etwas – und setzt damit seinen empirischen Gegenstand voraus, auf den sie sich bezieht. Nicht allerdings ist der Bezug selbst – die Wissenschaft – Produkt der Empirie; sondern diese stellt sich jenem viel eher entgegen – und es ist die Wissenschaft selbst, die als Mass und Einheit des zu Erkennenden dient.

Will further fee freezes call for a new model of education in Dubai?

We already know that the Dubai Schools Inspection Bureau takes its education model straight out of the OFSTED playbook in England and that the UAE Unified Inspection Framework is modelled and run in a very similar way to UK inspections. With the recent fee freeze putting a squeeze on school providers will we see even more parallels with the UK state sector going forward?

With the growth in the number of schools set to continue in Dubai (10-12 new schools are set to open annually for the foreseeable future) the KHDA will soon need to seek a new inspection model. The DSIB is already struggling to find enough inspectors each year and increasingly they must rely upon ‘waking the dead’ i.e. drawing on a pool of retired inspectors from the UK without recent experience of life on the coal face. OFSTED itself faces a similar issue: Robert Hill, a former policy adviser to Tony Blair, warned that OFSTED’s diminished funding meant resources for inspection were “now very definitely finite”.

When we also consider the recent freeze on school fees in Dubai the parallels to the UK system become even greater. The financial viability of schools working on the basis of certain cash flow projections has now been left in tatters. Even GEMS, the most significant schools group in the emirate, has had to shelve plans for its $5 billion IPO, freeze teacher salaries and (if the rumours are to be believed) cut 75 jobs from their corporate head office. 

For new schools starting out in Dubai when many families are leaving the emirate, this economic stimulus could not be happening at a worse time. The blanket school fee freeze, coupled with an oversupply of school places which had compelled many schools to reduce their school fees or offer significant discounts already, seems likely to drive down the price of education in Dubai for several years to come.

No doubt this news is welcomed by some parents whose budgets have been stretched by the introduction of VAT and year-on-year school fees rises, yet schools often do not raise their fees simply to increase their surplus. More often than not a fee increase happens to enable leaders to keep pace with the rising costs of running an educational institution. In recent years schools have been asked to reshape their working week and staffing to accommodate the introduction of the national state curriculum, that is UAE Social Studies, Moral Education, Arabic and Islamic Studies; subjects which now account for about 20% of the curriculum, or one day out of five. 

In addition, schools have had to contend with regular inflation, VAT on those supplies related to the provision of the education services which are subject to the standard rate and the cost of teacher licensing for several hundred staff members. Fulfilling these national state education requirements alone is likely to be costing schools somewhere in the region of 2-3% more next year than this. This is before we consider any of the school’s own strategic development plans.

As such this year’s fee freeze is actually a zero-sum game. A parents’ personal financial gain is equivalent to the school’s loss, so the net benefit is zero. Since staff salaries and benefits are the single biggest cost to any school then it is clear that this is where most schools will look to make savings. Yet as the global teacher recruitment crisis accelerates (we will need every teacher in England to move abroad if we are to staff the growing number of international schools by 2025) we need to consider alternatives. 

If we look again at the UK we also see a state of economic uncertainty and what is clear is that school budgets will be significantly reduced in the years that follow. Consequently, since the introduction of the Academies Act in the UK in 2010, UK schools have begun moving towards multi-school collectives. First there were loose collaborations followed by umbrella trusts and federations and it now seems likely that all state schools will need to form or join a Multi-Academy Trust for one simple reason: financial viability. 

So what about Dubai? We have already seen the Indian and Pakistani schools form a loose association along with the British Schools in Dubai group. In order to capitalise upon the efficiencies which will be required by schools moving forward, both to compete with the economies of scale already afforded to the likes of GEMS and Taleem and to combat fee freezes, can we formalise these loose collaborations with other schools in order to centralise procurement, professional review, research and development and offer clearer career progression?

OFSTED’s current chief inspector Amanda Spielmark recently told MPs, “I think the view we can get just by looking at subsets of schools in a MAT is very significantly more limited than the view we would get by looking at the whole of a MAT”. MATs she remarked are “highly integrated operations” at which OFSTED needs to “look properly”. The intention is now to inspect the central services of trusts leaving trusts to self-evaluate.

Is the birth of multi-school groups in Dubai the solution to the burgeoning demands on the DSIB and the economic demands on schools? If so there are significant bridges to be built and egos to be massaged as principals running privately-owned schools learn to subordinate their own personal ambitions for the greater good of the Dubai education landscape.

What is certain is that there is great uncertainty ahead.

Dies meldete das Studio heute über den offiziellen Twitteraccount.

Auch wenn über das Ausmaß der Umtrukturierung noch keine Informationen veröffentlicht wurden, scheint sich das Studio dazu entschieden zu haben, einige Mitarbeiter zu entlassen. Im zweiten Absatz der Meldung verabschiedet sich das Studio von einigen Kollegen, die das Studio verlassen müssen:

Today at IOI, we had to make some changes to our studio, which will allow us to be better equipped for our future adventures. We're sad that great talent and good friends will be leaving the studio. We are doing everything possible to look after everyone affect. Thank you for your support and understanding.

Weitere Details zu den Gründen oder der Anzahl der betroffenen Mitarbeiter sowie die Auswirkungen auf die Spielmarke Hitman sind aktuell nicht bekannt. Es ist davon auszugehen, dass die aktuelle Entwicklung in Verbindung mit der jüngst bekannt gegebenen Trennung von Publisher Square Enix stehen.

Die Rechte an der Marke Hitman bleiben unserer Recherche nach beim Studio und auch eine zweite Season sei bereits in Arbeit. Eine offizielle Bestätigung dazu gibt es jedoch zum jetzigen Zeitpunkt nicht.

Call of Duty WW2 für Nintendo Switch?

Aktuell gibt’s einige Hinweise darauf, dass Call of Duty: WW2 neben PC, PS4 und Xbox One auch auf die Nintendo Switch kommt.

So posiert das Entwicklerteam von Beenox auf einem Twitter-Bild mit Call of Duty-Shirts und Soldaten des kanadischen Militärs. Beenox hatte under anderem die PS3 und Xbox 360 Version von Black Ops 3 portiert und an Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered mitgearbeitet.

Zudem ist seit Freitag auf der offiziellen Call of Duty-Website die Option zurückgekehrt, seinen Nintendo Account mit seinem Call of Duty-Konto zu verknüpfen. Die Option hatte man damals entfernt, als klar wurde, dass Black Ops 3 nicht für Nintendo-Plattformen erscheint.

Die Website BadFive will zudem von einer anonymen Quelle erfahren haben, dass die Switch-Version zur E3 angekündigt wird. Nintendo’s Livestream findet am 13. Juni statt.

Resident Evil bekommt Kino-Reboot

Von wegen The Final Chapter: Die Resident Evil-Filmreihe geht weiter. Das berichtet das Magazin Variety.

Erfahren hat man das vom Vorstandsvorsitzenden der Produktionsfirma Constantin Film, Martin Moszkowicz, auf dem Filmfest in Cannes. Moszkowicz zufolge plant man einen Reboot der Action-Horror-Reihe.

Finanziell ergibt das Sinn. 1,2 Millarden Dollar haben die bisherigen sechs Filme von Paul W.S. Anderson eingespielt – auch wenn Spiele-Fans und Kritiker nicht wirklich begeistert waren. Paul W.S. Anderson arbeitet übrigens gerade an der Film-Version einer anderen Capcom-Spielereihe: Monster Hunter.

Darsteller, Regisseur oder gar einen Termin für Resident Evil gibt’s noch nicht.

Bayonetta-Macher arbeiten an neuer Marke

Platinum Games, die Macher von Bayonetta oder Nier: Automata arbeiten an einer neuen Spielemarke. Dass hat Producer Atsushi Inaba auf dem BitSummit in Kyoto, Japan angekündigt.

Die neue Marke würde auch einen neuen Director bekommen und wäre eine komplette eigenproduktion. Zuletzt hatte das Studio etwas mit Square-Enix an Nier gearbeitet.

Mehr Details dazu gibt’s noch nicht, die neue Spielmarke wird nur kryptisch als »formlos« beschrieben.

Platinum Games hatte für Microsoft eigentlich am Drachen-Action-Spiel Scalebound gearbeitet, im Februar hatte Microsoft das Projekt aber eingestampft. Trotzdem hat der Publisher den Markenschutz für Scalebound erst kürzlich nochmal verlängert.
