How’d Winston Do The Other Night? 10/22-10/23
WOW WE HAD SOME CRAZINESS FOLKS!!!! I got to do a show with my bff Paige Campbell on his birthday, and also got to do two mics on Tuesday. Wild and wacky shows both nights so let’s just get into it!
Monday night was sweet baby boy Paige Campbell’s birthday (@unclepaige). A great comic and even better friend! His birthday actually fell on The Southern open mic night so we knew it was going to be a doozy!
I get to the show early like I always do to set up my camera, move the tables and chairs,  and do a little writing. After a while the riff session starts once Paige C arrives. We are riffing, raffing, and busting balls and just celebrating the big lug’s birthday in style.
Some of my favorite people showed up to the mic. We had Colby Knight (deeply closeted gay liberty student turned deeply closeted stand up comedian), Jake Snyder (Abe Lincoln impersonator turned stand up comedian), JR, Abdulla, Keaton Ray, David Luzader, David McCallie, Dylan Vattelana (Richmond/touring comic very funny dude), Jesse Jarvis, and so many more I know I am missing out on!
The crowd is kind of light, but honestly the worst part is they were super tight! Chris went up first and because we had such a full lineup did a shorter set to open up the show.
It honestly felt like everybody was bombing on this show. I can’t remember the order and who went but I do remember that it felt like bomb after bomb after bomb. The first pretty good set I remember was Dylan was able to crack them open a little bit. He was working on some newer material, and that is always fun to see. Dylan is a super good joke writer, and a hard working comic. He’s at the feature level for a lot of clubs now, and proof that hard work and determination pays off.
I’ve known Dylan since I started doing comedy, and was/am always impressed by his work ethic, and ability to write new material. He had mentioned to me that like myself he had been going through a weird writer’s funk lately so it was dope to see him crack through that and work on some material. He had a pretty good set, especially for the crowd.
After that it went right back to bombing. Legitimately it was so weird. I think all in all maybe 4 out of the almost 20 comics had a good set and honestly nobody absolutely slaughtered.
I went up and opened with a roast joke about my boy Paige C! I said, “If Paige Campbell was a country his chief import would be cocaine and his chief export would be HPV.” That got a good laugh and got to transition into a brand new joke I wrote about gay conversion therapy. That joke definitely needs work, but based on the crowd reaction it definitely has legs.
I continued with newer jokes and honestly up to that point had the best set of the night. The jokes worked, and got a few big pops so all in all super happy with the set.
I’m excited to see where the gay conversion therapy joke goes. I know it needs a few more punches and the wording is sloppy af, but it is a good premise.
I’d give my set a C+/B- . It was a good fine set and super productive.
The last comic of the night was Paige. He got to do an extended set so that was pretty dope. The crowd had thinned out even more until a group of 4 people came in right before he got on stage. They were great audience members and changed the entire energy of the show.
Paige was pretty drunk, and was slurring his words. His jokes were hitting, and I was yelling older bits of his I wanted him to do. There was a five minute period where Chris Alan and I went on stage with him and messed around.
Eventually one of the audience members took off a wig. He didn't need to wear it. Its was just a weird blonde wig he had over top of his super long hair. We just thought he was crazy, but he said he was wearing it because he thought it’d be funny. Paige closed his set out by putting on the wig and doing his final 5 or 6 minutes.
It was a great energy, everybody was laughing and busting balls. It was a lot of inside baseball but everybody was loving it and was the perfect way to end the night. After the show we ran to Applebees for a birthday hang, and then headed out. All in all a super dope Monday!
The next night there were a couple mics on my agenda. We had Mojos which had Brian Mann and Kate Carroll substitute hosting and then Jesse Jarvis was running Fallout downtown.
I hit up Brian and asked if I could go first so I could hit both shows and he lovingly agreed. Now Brian is a super good dude and a unique/original comic. Sometimes the premises he uses have no rhyme or reason but honestly there’s a beauty to that. I would say that his style is legitimately the exact polar opposite of what I do on stage and honestly I think that’s why I like talking to him so much. A good, genuine, and sweet boy.
Also I love Kate. She is my pc, leftist, sad aunt. She is one of the few people that I can completely disagree with and then have a civilized conversation and not be upset at her at all. She’s opened my eyes to a lot and I like to think I have done the same. She’s always down to have her ovaries busted, and always knows I’m coming from a sweet place. Both funny, cool people.
Mojos is def the alt spot in town. I really like doing this room because you have to work super hard, and earn your laughs. It isn’t always the most fun show to do, but I really think if you want to be a good comic you have to do rooms of all types.
I went first and I think about half of my set went well. I got introduced by Kate and Brian at the same time and I did a small roast about, “there’s no way two comics could be worse than one Patrick Buhse (normal mojos host) said silently”. Then I went into my newer material. Not everyone was listening yet but I got laughs on most of the stuff I did. I screwed myself and misspoke a few times which really messed up the jokes.
I hate being at this point of working on jokes where they’re new, but not memorized yet. Getting the wording down is super important and I let myself down with this set. At least I got to do the newer stuff and I found a couple new roads to take on a few bits which is nice.
Kate went up and cracked one on me about being a teacher and screwing up my phrasing. I deserved it!
I’d give my set a C-. It was productive but I could have done better. It was another night of me letting my headspace mess with my comedy. I have just been so exhausted lately. I needed the adrenaline to kick in during the set and it just didn’t.
I grabbed my stuff, said goodbye, hopped in my car and headed downtown to Fallout.
Fallout is the local goth/fetish bar downtown. I always love doing the show even if the audience isn’t always into it.
I went up and did new material but also had a mini breakdown on stage. Sometimes in that room it is super cathartic for me to just try to work out how I feel. So I just talked out why I was even doing comedy with a few audience members. For the most part they vibed with my set. Half of what I did worked, and I got a couple big pops.
All in all it was a pretty underwhelming set for my standards.  I’d give this set a D. I didn’t feel as good after as I did on stage. It was definitely a good use of time, but I really needed rest and it showed. So I grabbed my stuff and headed home.
That’s it for Monday and Tuesday laydees!!! I’ll be back tomorrow with my shows from Wednesday! They were some good old fashioned fun. As always babes xoxo and I’ll see ya soon!!!!
