Jenny Humphrey
sloppily stitched together
The original plan was to use my playlist from 99 songs that Remind Me of Jenny Humphrey (with a few revisions.) But the further I got into this project the more I knew that wouldn't stand, hers needed to be overhauled so I could solidify the sound.
It would have been easy to say that Jenny's sound starts as pop and ends as rock. But that would discount the rockstar who raised her and the pieces of hope that the hard exterior was designated to cover. Jenny moves between the 2 genres all the way from beginning to end.
in my dreams i have a plan
Pity Party by Melanie Martinez samples It's My Party by Leslie Gore, which appears at the beginning of Blair's playlist.
standing alone at the top of the stairs
I specifically used The Beatles and The Traveling Wilburys for Jenny's brief flirtation with emancipation to tie her sound back to Rufus and his record collection. Despite how much she fights it, she's a Humphrey at her core.
smacked in the face with a silver spoon
Unlike the first phase that used love songs to link Jenny's desire for Blair with her desire for power, this one keeps them separate. I don't think her feelings for Damien were more genuine the show just stopped acknowledging that she was queen of Constance after she and Eric made up.
shattered edges glisten
I'm actually so proud of the progression from 25 ("and still alive") to You're Dead to dead girl in the pool to Zombie. all in a row

I finally caved and wrote a YouTube AU, and tbqh this whole fic wouldn't even exist without the blessing that is @krisrix. Thank him for this.
There were a couple art inspirations behind this, first and foremost being this piece by Kris which set this whole thing off and made me need to write a 'verse where Baz has a fashion channel.
And another of Baz's shirts in this piece was inspired by this art by @thehoneyedhufflepuff.
Kris's brilliant mind also gave Simon his channel name in this 'verse, and he and @annabellelux shouted this perfect title at me on the discord because I'm awful with naming things. (This is why I can't have kids.)
I also wanna give a really big HEY THANKS to @sbazzing & @thehoneyedhufflepuff for being my wondrous, enthusiastic betas.
And now, without further ado, please enjoy the first installment in whatever this YouTube AU 'verse turns out to be.
BAZ
“I just think … it could be a fun way to grow your channel, get more subs, you know.”
Snow shrugs, sat across the table from me, looking devastatingly perfect with his golden curls falling over his forehead and his blue eyes shining in the sun streaming in from behind me. I want to clock him, sometimes, because he’s so beautiful and it’s no wonder he’s got one of the fastest growing channels on YouTube right now. I subscribed solely to look at him. I can’t imagine I’m alone in that.
“Baz?” Snow is waving his hand in front of my face and I realize I’d completely zoned out staring at him. Again. I’ve done that an embarrassing number of times since we started meeting, but I hope he takes me for one of those socially awkward YouTubers and not madly in love with him.
In truth, I’m probably both. But I’m definitely madly in love with him. I just can’t say it, because for all I do know about Simon Snow thanks to his inability to stop running his mouth in front of a camera, I don’t know if he’s queer.
“What d’ya think?” he asks again, and I have to physically keep myself from shaking my daze away. I blink and refocus on him.
“I don’t do challenges,” I say firmly. “I think they’re… hokey. They take nothing to make, and they’re solely stunts to build a followership.”
“Well, yeah,” Snow huffs a laugh. “That’s what the whole platform’s for, Baz. Building a followership, entertaining subscribers.”
“And I do that well enough without doing those pointless sorts of videos.”
“Come on , Baz,” Snow sighs, and I could drink in the way he says my name all day. He’s watching me, looking at me so fondly, and I have to drop my eyes down to my drink before I do or say something I’ll quickly regret. “Just one. Do one challenge, for me. I’ll even help you! From - from conception, to filming, to editing.”
And those were the magic words, right there. For me. I think I would do anything for him, for that smile, and the way it wrinkles up his freckled cheeks. He’s smiling at me right now, he’s always smiling at me, at everyone. Sometimes I put his videos on mute and just watch him talking and smiling.
Because I’m disturbed. And I’m apparently completely infatuated with this curly-haired Adonis sat across from me.
I heave a dramatic sigh, shaking my head and finally saying, “Alright.”
“Seriously?” Snow’s grinning at me wider, somehow, his eyes squinting with glee. Squinting with glee, have you ever been able to actually describe somebody with that? No one is that goddamn happy, except Simon Snow is. Right now, talking to me, about working on a video with me. I nod, and he shoots up in his seat, even thrusts his fist into the air a bit. “Brilliant! Oh, Baz, this’ll be brilliant, I swear.”
I can’t help but laugh—he’s so astonishingly happy, it rubs right off.
“Sure thing, Snow.”
“You know you can call me Simon, yeah? I mean, that’s my name.”
Simon is his name, but he goes by ‘Snow’ on the internet. At least, he did when he initially started his channel, ‘SnowMercy’. He is called Simon more often now, Simon Snow, though his actual surname is still rarely mentioned save for ridiculous internet articles about content creators.
“Is ‘Snow’ not? Where does it come from?”
“Well, I mean…” Simon shifts in his seat, and I’m afraid I’ve made him uncomfortable in some manner. He’s still smiling, but does it have an edge of awkward energy now? Have I ruined this already? We’ve met up a total of three times since we first actually met each other in person, back at a London creators conference — have I ruined this within three meetings? “Snow’s my middle name, so, I s’pose that is also my name.”
He laughs, and maybe the discomfort was in my head because his grin is suddenly back on me and I feel warm, as if I’m standing directly in a beam of sunlight.
“We’re even then,” I say, lifting my cup up to drain the last of my coffee. “Baz is my middle name.”
“That’s not your given name? What is it, then?”
I chuckle, gripping my cup with both hands. “Can’t spoil all my mysteries up front, can I?”

Serena van der Woodsen
gilding melting off a red hot interior
Serena, more than anything and anyone else, needed a pop sound: after all - she's fun, she's bubbly, she's energy. Most of the playlist ranges from 1960s to 2010s pop, but the sound does veer into rock - a symbol of her wanting to break away from the UES life.
parents won't be coming home 'til late
A combination of her pre-series exploits, her reputation, and her return to the upper east side. I'm proudest of finding Richie Tozier by Ok Otter. Who knew those two were so similar?
i'm falling, won't you catch me?
This section, centered around Dan, has it's fair share of pop, but I wanted more distinctly vintage songs than other sections to better meld with Dan's sound.
moments i play in the dark
Sound wise, this section is a poppy return to her pre-series party ways, but with a distinct understanding of the dark underbelly and exploitation of it all.
you say "when we're married" 'cause you're not bitter
This phase is all the bad romance decisions she made. I love her with Nate, but they weren't together that long and she was a terrible girlfriend toward the end, so he unfortunately gets folded in.
nothing was right and nothing's wrong
The four friends in Runs in the Family are, in order, Dan Nate Jenny and Blair. Eric could have also fit a few but his mental illness definitely runs in Serena's family.

Nate Archibald
peeling off the gold point
Nate's sound was only ever "easy" to me. he moves through emotions and genres (depending on his love interest) - but it all needs to be something that could play in background while smoking with friends. Nate's is also the playlist I had the most fun with, pulling 2 songs from the Barbie soundtrack.
make me feel and believe that we in paradise
I considered doing a Chuck playlist as part of this project (if only because I'm a completionist.) I knew if I did Super Rich Kids would be the opener. Once that idea was nixed the song went to Nate.
heal the holes in me
I made a (half joking) post a while back about Unwritten being a Nate Archibald song, then immediately added it to this playlist because it is, actually.
through the night like an ember
This is about where the show ran out of ideas for what exactly to do with Nate. I can tell because, as long as this section is, I have nothing to say about it.
deep in quicksand
This phase, where's Nate the furthest from himself, is the only album cover that couldn't be handwriting. He's so casual until he can't be--until he's in deep with the Spectator and Diana.
we could escape sometime
This phase of Nate's life is potentially speculation on my part (I mean, the last one used a screenshot of him in the flash forward.) But the show didn't give him much, and he was more at peace in season six than season five. Let's just pretend the love songs aren't about a teenager.

Dan Humphrey
the outsider yearning to get in
Dan's sound was one of the hardest to pin down (topped only by Eric.) I wanted to pull from his rockstar father, his pretentious indie sensibilities, and his old world romanticism. He ended up sharing genres with all 3 of his main love interests - but they run through the playlist instead of being confined to when he's dating them.
While his status as Gossip Girl isn't explicit - themes of being an outsider watching (and waiting) do run through the playlist.
what is so wrong with me?
The only entirely instrumental piece in this project, Dan's opener The Typewriter was too good to pass up. I pulled wordy quotes from most of his other songs to make up for it (and because he's a writer.)
my girl, my girl, my girl. you will be my girl
A lot of this section is songs by women about women. It's the outsider looking up at the girl he feels doesn't notice him and that he's forbidden to touch. What a lesbian of a man.
cheap wine in expensive glasses
I always knew Keep an Eye on Dan would be on here - but placing it chronologically was a challenge. Ultimately, I'm satisfied with it's spot at the end of The Milo Interlude
my blood runs red
get it? bc he's not a blue blood?
Like or Like Like by Miniature Tigers is the song on this playlist that reminds me the most of Joe Goldberg - more than any of the songs from when he was on outsider.
leave me standing in the hall or let me enter?
This section opens with an old union song, tying Dan to Vanessa, and closes with Daddy Sang Bass (very nearly lived in the first phase) which ties him back to his family (with a banished sister being equated with a dead brother.)

Blair Waldorf
a waxing and waning sense of self
The image of Blair's playlist presented itself to me pretty early on. It needed plenty of songs from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. It needed to be sung entirely by women (nobody else has a gender restriction.) It needed to be partially in French (she's the only bilingual playlist.)
supposed to be mine
A whopping 5 of the 8 songs in this section came from a playlist of all the songs featured in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Thank you to Eric Gorfain and Sam Phillips for giving me that starting point.
the devil divine
This section is the only one in the project that features songs by both Leighton Meester and Taylor Momsen (ie The Pretty Reckless.) I considered losing The Pretty Reckless song but the layers of Jenny's voice singing "You don't want me like I want you" was too good to pass up.
qu’importe ce qu’on dit de nous
The lyrics for You're in Paris from Ben Franklin in Paris don't actually exist anywhere on the internet, and transcribing them was almost annoying enough for me to replace the song.
could you love this?
I had a rule for myself that Dan's playlist wouldn't have any Taylor Swift (he needed a more pretentious indie sound.) But she has a few songs here because I have to admit she has some Dair Songs.
do i tell you? would you care?
How could I end with anything but Audrey Hepburn's Moon River?

I’ll let you keep what you stole

I thought of who you were beneath the clothing that you wore
I tried to tune you out, but you could never be ignored

Looking for your shadow in your light beneath the door
And I want you, oh, so badly, no, I've never wanted more

Keep my head nice & quiet
For you

And I just need you here beside me

And you don't seem the lying kind
A shame that I can read your mind

But you know that it means so much
And you don't even feel a thing
I am falling
I am fading
I am drowning
Help me to breathe
