Hannah Morrissey takes up back to Black Harbor in The Widowmaker. "A cryptic note lures Morgan Mori back home to Black Harbor. The same night she photographs a family Christmas party, she witnesses the fatal shooting of a police officer. Clues are revealed in the longtime disappearance of business mogul, Clive Reynolds. Is Morgan's dark history the key to finding answers?" This story from Morrissey is dark and gritty. Morgan has a horrible past of child abuse. The descriptions of Black Harbor are bleak. The characters all seem to be searching for light and unable to find it. There are family secrets - old and new. Morrissey does a nice job with the slow reveal. You never know who the killer is until the end - and you probably won't guess. Crazy ending to this one. Good performance from the dual narrators - Adam Verner and Xe Sands. Their voices add to the bleak atmosphere of the story. Some excellent crime fiction from Morrissey. #thewidowmaker #hannahmorrissey #macmillanaudio #minotaurbooks #stmartinspress #adamverner #xesands #blackharborseries #grittycrimefiction #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #readinglife #bookphotography #bookcommunity #bookblogger #sodacityreads #suspensebook #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #homelibrary #thrillerbooks #domesticthriller #crimefiction #thriller #characterdrivenbooks #mysterythriller #bookrecs https://www.instagram.com/p/ClyWiuYr0qg/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

My Darkest Prayer by S.A. Cosby is a re-release of his first novel. "Nathan Waymaker is a former marine and former deputy. He works with his cousin at the funeral home and knows how to get rid of a body. After a local reverend is found dead, an elder of his church asked Nathan to look into the pastor's death because the sheriff does not seem interested in finding out what really happened. Nathan starts asking questions and soon finds that there are many who want the real reason kept quiet." This is gritty crime fiction from Cosby. There is lots of violence, murder and sex. Nathan Waymaker is a man with violence bubbling just below the surface. It doesn't take much of a threat to turn him loose. He feels like a precursor to Ike/Riot in Razorblade Tears. (There's even a Plymouth Fury reference) And there's a cast of big characters - like Skunk and Shade and Rev Short. Sometimes you can tell this is a first novel (never use a big word when a small one will do) but Cosby's gift is putting the reader in the story. You can see and smell and hear everything going on. The narrator, Adam Lazarre-White, is phenomenal. His big voice is perfect for this story and these characters. Fans of Cosby or edgy crime fiction will enjoy this book. #mydarkestprayer #sacosby #macmillanaudio #audiobooks #adamlazarrewhite #2023rerelease #bookstagram #bookshelves #booknerd #readinglife #bookphotography #bookcommunity #bookblogger #sodacityreads #suspensebook #bookhaul #literarycrimefiction #homelibrary #thrillerbooks #domesticthriller #crimefiction #thriller #characterdrivenbooks #mysterythriller #bookrecs #grittycrimefiction https://www.instagram.com/p/ClbO4F6L6zV/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Unwilling is the new book from John Hart. "It's the early 70's in Charlotte, NC. Families are terrified about their young men being drafted for Vietnam - a war that no one wants. The French family has already lost one son, Robert, and another son, Jason, comes back damaged and angry and ends up in prison. Their youngest son, Gibby, is 18 and a graduating senior. When Jason is released from prison, he returns to his home town and seeks out his younger brother. An outing with two older girls turns bad. When one of the girls is found murdered, Jason becomes a suspect. He is caught and returned to prison. But Gibby knows he didn't do it and sets out to prove his brother's innocence. But people, including his parents, will stand in his way..." Wow - what a story from Hart. And what great characters! "X" is one of the scariest fictional sociopaths you will read. Reese was disturbing. Jason is a young man returned from war and scarred from what he's seen and done - and the lie he is forced to live. Gibby is tired of being kept in the bubble as the remaing "good son" and just wants to prove himself a little. Gibby's dad constantly struggles with being a cop and upholding the law and doing what's right for his boys. I loved Becky's line about "it's just a house, it's not who I am". She seemed to be the calming force for Gibby. This is a gritty story from Hart. There are several storylines that come together in a big smash at the end. Hart makes it work. Fans of character-driven crime-fiction should love this book. Thanks to @netgalley and @stmartinspress for the advanced copy. The Driver is the debut novel from Hart Hanson. This was published in 2017, but sadly no follow up novel. “Michael Skellig is a retired Special Forces sergeant (and Math PHD) who runs his own limo company staffed by an eclectic group of veterans and including his former Afghan interpreter. He stops an attempted hit on a client and gets hired as a permanent driver. Soon he’s mixed up with gangsters, corrupt cops and missing barrels of money. Mayhem ensues...” This is crime fiction that’s both gritty and hilarious. It is crime fiction and people get shot and cars blown. There’s a horrifying scene with some pliers. But then there’s funny. Skellig is a great character. His sardonic wit will have you rolling. I hope HH will give us more of Michael Skellig. A great book for the beach 🏖 when you can get there again. #thedriver #harthanson #bravethebacklist #backlistbooks #grittycrimefiction #bookstagram #bookshelves #bookswithcharacter #bookhoarder #bookworm #sodacityreads #bookreview #hardcover #bookcollector #bookhaul #bookspines #goodreads #homelibrary #fiction #crimefiction #thriller #bookcollection https://www.instagram.com/p/B_NZQDpgP1l/?igshid=mkwo1d22m0g6
