Ex-Hartford Wolf Pack/New York Ranger Sylvain Lefebvre. After being hired as an assistant coach for the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets, he leaves the San Diego Gulls. Lefebvre is the second assistant coach to leave former Hartford Whalers' great, Kevin Dineen’s staff. Ex-Pack, David Urquhart, returned to Montreal to be the head coach at McGill University (OUAAA). Alex Tanguay, an Iowa Wild assistant coach signs with the Detroit Red Wings.

KRAKEN AND CHECKERS WORKING TOGETHER

The expansion Seattle Kraken announced they would have a dual affiliation arrangement with the Charlotte Checkers for their first season in 2021-22 while building a new facility in Palm Springs that's currently under construction. The irony is that current Seattle General Manager and Whaler great, Ron Francis, had a six-year relationship with Charlotte while he was with the Carolina Hurricanes. The Checkers were the Hurricane's AHL affiliates up until last season. They and are now in Chicago with the Wolves. The Kraken will likely send 8 players, but that number could climb to as many as 12 players to the Checkers. Francis has been operating at his North Carolina home since the COVID pandemic started. The team will supply the Checkers with an assistant coach who will likely become the first head coach of the Kraken's Palm Springs (CA) affiliate when they come on board in their brand new 10,000 seat arena in 2022-23. It will be the second straight year that the Florida Panthers will have a dual affiliation. Last season the defending Stanley Cup champions and current finalist, Tampa Bay Lightning, shared the Syracuse Crunch.

NHL DRAFT

The Seattle Expansion Draft is set for Wednesday, July 21 at 8 pm and broadcast on ESPN2 in Seattle. The entire NHL Draft is held and broadcast over two days, with the first round covered across the US by NBCSN. For the second year in a row, the draft will be done remotely. On Saturday, the NHL Network will broadcast rounds 2-7. NBCSN is going to be closing shop soon. The draft broadcast team will be composed of members of their staff and ESPN/Turner Sports, where hockey coverage is going to be moving forward, as well as TSN in Canada talent.

KARMANOS NO LONGER AN NHL OWNER

The NHL announced Carolina Hurricanes majority owner Tom Dundon completed his acquisition of the remaining minority ownership stake of Peter Karmanos. As a result, Dundon is now the sole owner of the team. The transaction formally ends Karmanos' relationship with the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers that began in 1994.

AHL NEWS

The AHL Board Of Governors (BOG) approved and announced the sale of the Rockford IceHogs to the Chicago Blackhawks. Read more about that HERE. The AHL BOG then announced that the City of Abbotsford and the Vancouver Canucks had finalized the lease for the AHL team and that the Aquillini Investment Group (AIG) arena management portion of the deal. AIG is the parent company of the Vancouver Canucks. The Abbotsford Centre is a multi-purpose entertainment and sports facility. Aquilini Investment Group will manage staffing, event bookings, ticketing, and food and beverage management.  More on that deal HERE. Revenue sharing is also included in the contract. The city benefits from enhanced financial gains by sharing profits if there are an average of 5,000 tickets sold per regular season game.

MOVEMENT

Ex-Pack Brian Gibbons (Salisbury Prep) leaves Lausanne HC (Switzerland-LNA) to play for Linköping HC (Sweden-SHL) next season. Adam Musil, the nephew of former Whaler and Ranger Bobby Holik, switches teams in the Czech Republic, going from HC Liberec to HC Dynamo Pardubice. Ex-Bridgeport Sound Tiger (now Islanders) goalie Kevin Poulin leaves IF Bjorkloven (Sweden-Allsvenskan) and signs a one-year AHL deal with the Laval Rocket. The UCONN Huskies will be getting defensive depth next season in Jarrod Gourley, a grad transfer defenseman from NCAA Divison-1 independent Arizona State University (ASU). He is the 51st NCAA grad transfer in the hectic college hockey off-season that has seen 108 players switch schools via school or grad transfers. Gourley is a left-handed shooter who hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He will be in Storrs in a few months. The 22-year-old is undrafted, and his younger brother, Connor Gourley, is currently playing with Camrose (AJHL) and will be at ASU next year. Quinnipiac University (ECACHL) added veteran coach Mike Corbett as the new assistant coach for the Bobcats. Corbett coached Alabama-Huntsville (WCHA) for the last seven years.

GUITE AND OTHER MOVES

Ex-Sound Tiger Ben Guité, who has been with his alma mater an assistant and associate head coach with the Maine Black Bears (HE) for eight years, did not have his contract renewed. Guite was named the interim head coach in May after the sudden passing of one-time Yale assistant Dennis “Red” Gendron. UMASS assistant coach Bill Barr was hired in early June as the new head coach. Sadly, the WCHA Men's Hockey conference is shutting down after 70 years. They lost seven schools to the new CCHA and saw the University of Alabama-Huntsville and the University of Alaska-Anchorage went dark this year. The University of Alaska-Fairbanks will play as a Division-1 independent next season. It's possible that in the next couple of years that the WCHA will return as a true Western-based US college conference. The WCHA women’s conference will continue as is.

PLAYERS CALLING MOVING VANS

Nic Pierog (Canterbury Prep/Sound Tigers) leaves the Indy Fuel (ECHL) and signs with HKM Zloven (Slovakia-SLEL) for next season. Leaving HKM, the defending Slovak league champion is ex-Pack, Allan MacPherson who departs for HC Kosice (Slovakia). Ex-Sound Tiger, Jesse Graham, leaves KalPa Kuopio (Finland-FEL) and signs with Augsburger (Germany-DEL). On his new team and also switching clubs is Marek Bartunas. He is the cousin to Matej Baca, the nephew of former Whaler Jergus Baca. The younger Baca is returning to HK 32 Liptovsky (Slovakia-SLEL) after being traded last year in mid-season. Ex-Sound Tiger Tomas Malec, who nears the end of his career at age 39, drops down from the Czech Elite League HC Brno to HC Brno-B (Division-3). Former UCONN Husky, Spencer Naas, departs Tranås AIF (Sweden HockeyEttan Division-1) for HC Amiens (France-FREL).

US WORLD JUNIOR TEAM NEWS

The 44-player tryout camp for the United States World Junior Team is set to play July 24-31 in the World Junior Summer Showcase at the USA Hockey Arena in Plymouth, Michigan. Included on the roster for defense is Scott Morrow (Darien). He will head to the defending national champion, UMASS-Amherst (HE), in the fall. Morrow, has played for the Shattuck’s St. Mary’s program for the last three years. A WJC returnee from the Bronze medal-winning squad from last year is Jake Sanderson, the son of former Whaler great Geoff Sanderson. He skates for North Dakota (NCHC). Another returnee, but at forward, is Rangers draft pick Brett Berard of Providence College (HE). He is the son of former UCONN head coach David Berard, now the Director of Administration at PC. The elder Berard played as an undergrad, graduated from PC, and was an assistant coach for twelve years. He is no relation to former NHL’er Bryan Berard. There is also Matthew “Mackie” Samoskevitch (Newtown). He is heading to the University of Michigan (Big 10) in the fall and is NHL Draft eligible this year. Lastly, a sophomore from Quinnipiac University (ECACHL), Ty Smilanic, a draft pick of the Florida Panthers last year. The WJC tournament will run from December 26th through January 5th in Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta, Canada. USA Hockey named its roster and coaches for 2021 Hlinka Cup in Breclav, Czech Republic, and Piestany, Slovakia. There is just one local name associated with the team, Assistant Coach Jared Walman, from Hamden, Connecticut.

CHL DRAFT NEWS

The 30th annual CHL (Canadian Hockey League) Import Draft that involves the three Canadian major junior leagues was held early this year. Normally it's held a week after the NHL Draft. 85 players were selected, including 52 forwards, 26 defensemen, and seven goalies were chosen by 57 teams compromised of the OHL, QMJHL, and the WHL. The top three countries to have players selected were Russia with 16, the Czech Republic with 15, and Belarus taking 11. Just two players had Connecticut connections. UCONN defenseman Yan Kuznetsov, who left school two years early after signing an entry-level deal with the Calgary Flames, played six games with the AHL Stockton Heat, who, because of Covid-19, played their games in Calgary last season. Kuznetsov was taken in the first round (22nd overall) by the QMJHL Saint John (NB) Sea Dogs. Kuznetsov is 6’4 and 225 lbs. He will not be turning 20-years-of-age until March 2022. He is still Russia WJC eligible, so he could wind up in the Q getting valuable playing minutes depending on the organizational depth in Stockton. 6' tall defenseman David Spacek is the other player selected with a connection to Connecticut. He was taken in the second round (67th overall), is a right-hander, and was selected by the QMJHL Sherbrooke Phoenix. Spacek 18, is the son of former Beast of New Haven defenseman Jaroslav Spacek. He played last year for HC Litomerice (Czech Republic Division-2). He is signed to play for HC Plzen (Pilsner) in the Czech U-20 league this year and is WJC eligible. His father is the national team assistant coach and is also an assistant with HC Plzen with the Czech Elite League (CEL) team. He could play in the Q get playing time like Kuznetsov, but the NHL Draft in three weeks will likely play a factor in where he goes if he is drafted. this time on spot rambles their ass off: tisos (weaver ants) colony and spencer!

Tisos colony (weaver ants):

- the colony had three queens which started off as friends before falling in poly lesbians with each other. this relationship was short lived, because of an attack from different colony - all three were presumed dead, but only two bodies were found - the kingdom of three queens was medium sized for the fact of how many queens there were, but then again, it was quite young for a kingdom - obviously, the place ran on autocratic monarchy, bc i feel like ants wouldnt be too political, tbh - weaver ants nests in hk style/universe would be interlocked by bridges that could stretch for impossibly long, most of the time theyd be there naturally, aka vines, but sometimes theyd be remade or redirected to suit the ants needs • these adjusted bridges would usually have some lamps on them, most of the time containing tiny fireflies - the nests were usually lighted up by lampions, instead of paper, silk of the larvae would be used • that means there were certain kinds of craftmanship thatd deal with decoration of these lampions (and, by extension, cloths as well) - mostly coloring and painting - a lot of culture would be more battle focused. ants weaponry couldve ranged from typical nails and shields to chemical sorts (acid) - guards would be on the outskirts of the kingdom at all times; every day ants change their posts and positions - dangerous roles would be guardians, food foragers and territory scouts (the colony wishes to expand constantly, as resources allow) - once per month every ant except the days guards would have a day off to celebrate the kingdoms development - constructions of nests doesnt differ from the irl style that much, except they use hooks to pull leaves together rather than each other (ants are WILDLY strong, okay, especially the bigger ones) - most of the ants know each other thanks to the whole smell thing they have goin on - quite aggressive, would start wars with other kingdoms, ant or not

Spencer:

- they were genderfluid, because fuck gender - they and tiso have been friends since they hatched Right next to each other. Do Not Separate Them 🔫👀 - weaver ants have two and sometimes three types of sized ants, Spencer was either middle sized or big sized, aka a defender, while Tiso was smol sized and was meant to stay in one of the nests - while Spencer usually tried to stay out of trouble and make Tiso do same, they,,,, usually helped him sneak outside of the nests - they trained a lot to be a good defender and everything they learned they showed to Tiso (thanks to that Tiso is actually a real good fighter) - Tiso repaid them by showing them all the neat tricks with tinkering that takes place a lot in the nests when the larvae and children do not require immediate attention - they were a NERD, but like the sort that could fuck u up in matter of seconds if they set their mind on it - since we are in them wondrous wanders, Spencer had a journal just like Ghost, where they wrote down notes about places while foraging food. sometimes, they even drew something but it wasnt That Good (in Tisos opinion all their doodles were beautiful) - Tiso and Spencer bitched a lot in the evenings before going to sleep in their room, telling each other stupid jokes or venting or just simply talking - while not big about "going out to drink" events, because they tried to be responsible, when Tiso went, they sometimes joined, resulting in both of them stumbling back home while laughing and hiccupping (backstreet back drunk vine eyyyy) - they were the one that introduced Tiso to "surfing" - their shield is the same that Tiso now wields. he installed the blades for them long before their death and together they were upgrading the weapon throughout years - Spencer was more liked than Tiso, but they made sure that Tiso would never feel abandoned - they were the level headed companion to Tisos complete foolery - they died by decapitation

In addition to proudly presenting an extravagant project featuring architecture, multiple bars and restaurants, a gym, a running track, two pools, a 360-degree lookout, the biggest sunbed in the world, and more… concrete is most proud of designing their first-ever traveling project: The Scarlet Lady cruise ship for Virgin Voyages.

Scarlet Lady is ready for her guests to arrive and will soon set sail in the Caribbean. Three additional ships will follow the same blueprint; the second, called Valliant Lady, is almost ready to explore the Mediterranean.

concrete completely changed the blueprint of traditional cruise ships by adding an actual running track and a two-story F&B pavilion as the beating heart of the Aquatic Club. The red loop floats elegantly over the upper deck and functions not just as a promenade, but also as a visual connection between the Perch at the very top of the ship and the Athletic & Aquatic Club on the decks below. It is the perfect spot to see and be seen.

Athletic Club Designed with the aesthetic of athletic social clubs of the past, our club incorporates not just an active Training Camp room and boxing classes, but also a basketball court and cold-pressed juice bar. The best of both wellness worlds just a few feet apart. The Athletic Club is where activity meets leisure, and sweat and support mingle. The club extends across both sides of the aft of the ship as an active outdoor lounge and adult playground. Topped by a sundeck, it features the largest daybed at sea as the perfect place on board to sunbathe or gaze at the stars.

Aquatic Club With smooth curves and nautical details, the pool deck has the sophisticated glam of a contemporary superyacht. Whether you’re looking for mornings spent sunbathing on one of the daybeds, or letting last night’s choices fade away as you glide through the water — the pool club is a serene space for ultimate relaxation.

Runway or running track The signature, Virgin-red running track floats over the upper decks of the ship inviting passengers to sprint, skate, or stroll whilst enjoying the best view over the ocean and the ship alike. It is an iconic and unique showstopper, worth changing the blueprint of the ship to make it happen. The luminous graphics will guide your athletic self day and night, and you might catch a glimpse of the all-night party on the crew deck.

Gym & Tonic After working up a sweat or standing around thinking about maybe, possibly picking up the weights, restore yourself by taking a dip in the Wellbeing [a2] Pool. More details on the Wellbeing area will soon be revealed!

B Complex Gym The Gym is divided into two parts to the port side and starboard side of the Gym &Tonic area. The starboard side part offers all you need if you are a workout fanatic and into speed. These spaces are held in cool dark blue and black, the perfect backdrop for all these trained bodies lit in theatrical light. The portside part offers all you need to reveal your inner peace. These light spaces are held in shades of off-white all featuring stunning ocean views.

The Perch Enjoy 360-degree views over the ocean, whilst an extensive red, translucent sunshade protects you from the Caribbean sun and golden bucket showers are available to cool you down quickly with a refreshing splash. The place for yoga, meditation, and stretching, or simply to escape the crowds and treat yourself to the most gorgeous ocean backdrop.

Restaurant Razzle Dazzle – deck 5 This restaurant offers creative surprises inspired by classic comfort foods. The bold interior is based on dazzle camouflage -a type of ship camouflage used extensively in World War I- based on the ability to blend in by standing out. The disruptive pattern is literally covering everything: at the walls and floors it is brought

back in diagonally layouts black and white rubber stripes, in the room dividers the pattern is build up in black powdered steel structures, and even the wooden tables in the center of the restaurant follow the diagonal pattern.

Restaurant Test Kitchen – Deck 6 Inspired by Escoffier’s Ma Cuisine, this laboratory-like restaurant is educational, experiential, and social. Hosting cooking classes and evolving tasting menus, this place is for the curious boundary-pushing foodies on board, one part cooking school, and one part restaurant.

The Test Kitchen restaurant has an eye-catching entryway with a light fixture showing images of herbs and spices that mimic the periodic table. The laboratory-like environment is accented by metallic furniture with greenish leather upholstery, sleek clean lines, custom made metallic open cupboards, and custom made fridges stocked up with storage and a finishing touch of beakers, test tubes, and volumetric flasks in them. The heart of the space forms the 2 live kitchens with bar seatings all around them.

The Scarlet Lady is ready for her guests to arrive and will set sail soon along the Caribbean. Three additional ships will follow the same blueprint, the second ship called the Vaillant Lady is almost ready to explore the Mediterranean.

New Hong Kong Security Law Leads To Civilian Turmoil

On June 30th,2020, China passed a new security law which brings their powers into the once independent Hong Kong. This law has been in the makings since 1997 when Beijing proposed to the NPC, National People’s Congress[1]. Through the greater influence that Beijing will have in Hong Kong, the once “one country, two systems” mind will dissipate into both of their histories[2].

This law creates a large Chinese presence in Hong Kong that is unwanted by those who reside there. The creation of the Security Law leaves Hong Kong citizens nervous about the survival of their independence and their once sovereign, democratic government[3]. A Hong Kong legal scholar, Eric Cheug, states. “(It’s) even worse than the worst-case scenario I had expected…full of features of China’s socialist legal system, and is pole apart from the spirit and the legal language of Hong Kong’s common law”3. In Causeway Bay, the civilian protests have led to the arrests of 370 individuals and 7 injured officers[4]. Police officers have been seen using pepper spray, water cannon, tear gas, and rubber bullets against the civilians that have been standing up to protect the rights that their government had insured them up until lately4. The problem with the protests are that the freedoms that the civilians once had; right to assembly, free press and independent judiciary, are not condoned on the mainland, therefore, Beijing is using these events to further prove the need for the new Security Law4. The Basic Law of 1997 was establish to protect these freedoms in Hong Kong though the newly established two-tiered semi-representative system will now repress the voices of Hong Kong[5][6]. With that said, what does this new law permit…

To start, mainland China now has the power to override local laws within Hong Kong1. Due to this, the nature of Hong Kong’s relationships with their civilians and foreign nationals could be harmed detrimentally1. Within Hong Kong, a national security office for Beijing officials will be erected1. Those who are placed in this location will enforce the new Security Law and most notably, actions taken by these Beijing officials towards ensuring compliance will be free from Hong Kong jurisdiction1. This office of Beijing will have the ability to take control over special cases that come to Hong Kong’s courts and “if a case involves state secrets or public order, it will face a closed-door trial with no jury”1.

Within the new Security Law, there will be the establishment of two new agencies: “a committee led by the city’s chief executive and staffed by Hong Kong officials, and an office set up directly by the central Chinese government”3. It will be these two groups that will ensure that the four new offenses dictated in the Security Law have adequately upheld and prevented in the city. These four offenses are the following:

1.     “Secession: breaking away from the country

2.     Subversion: undermining the power or authority of the central government

3.     Terrorism: using violence or intimidation against people

4.     Collusion with foreign or external forces”5

Due to the enactment of this law and making these offenses punishable, Hong Kong civilians fear that their country’s independence is on the fritz5.

Since the news of Chinese’s greater presence, a Hong Kong lawmaker and prominent pro-democracy activist, Nathan Law, fled the area[7]. Activist Joshua Wong, a political activist and co-founder of Demosisto, also decided to leave due to the new bill7. Critics of this motion, like Law and Wong, fear the overall effect of it on the Hong Kong citizen’s personal independence. Critics state, “the law has stripped Hong Kong of its autonomy and precious civil and social freedoms. The Chinese and local government argue its necessary to curb unrest and uphold mainland sovereignty”7 and that they “feared the bill would allow citizens to be sent across the border into mainland China”[8].

Hong Kong civilians continue to protest the Chinese government infiltration. The combative presence of the police forces has only led those to fear this law even more. As the relationship between the Hong Kong government and the citizens, the future of it is unknown.
