How do you think fahrar’s work? We’ve had glimpses in game here or there, but I’m curious to your interpretations
Ooh, first of all, thank you for the ask! It's an in-depth topic, but I really like the establishment of the fahrar system, even with how vague it seems to be. We don't know how many there are, though it's implied that even just the Citadel has multiple-- the Fahrar of Young Heroes is known as the Citadel's main and best fahrar.
We all know the basis of "combination daycare+military academy" but the actual structure, I imagine is pretty interesting. One big thing that's important to consider is the essential schooling, but also the consideration of how cubs wind up in positions that are interesting to them: I think assessments as well as interest-check field days are common. It's from these that cubs wind up figuring out what they'll actually be wanting to commit themselves to, and it's these classes that give them the groups they choose warbands from. While I know the military state they live in doesn't necessarily mean cubs are given jobs they want to have, but I've noted a lot of charr who surprisingly don't seem to mind having what would generally be considered not-fun jobs. There are warbands whose jobs are just scrapping, and it's explained that they don't mind it (sorry, I can't remember where this is specifically and I did briefly look where I thought they were on the wiki). Rox's warband were miners, etc.
Essentially, the early days of the fahrar are focused largely on your propaganda, general educational stuff--even soldiers have to count--, and fitness. All classes have drills and team-building exercises. As cubs get older and pick up interests, they get their warbands and learn more focused stuff for what they're going to be doing when they graduate. This structure is likely adhered to rigidly, because charr love structure.

August appears to observe Pythus' training exercises with his warband. During a lapse, the mesmer approaches Pythus and asks, "What's your favorite thing about Horncleaver?" (@commanderhorncleaver)
Pythus orders his warband to take a break, and they all go off to eat and drink.
Meanwhile Pythus himself steps off to the side and grabs a sponge out of a bucket of water to clean himself of a bit. It was while he was taking said sponge through his pits that August caught him.
"Oh, hey! if it isn't my favourite mesmer. Come to watch us again huh?"
He blinks, twice, three times when August asks his question. It isn't one he expected to be asked out of the blue.
He rubs the back of his head awkwardly. "Well, scorch me, your sire has taught me alot you know? Most Charr look at me and see a brawny dumbass, but your sire really took a chance on me."
He waves his paw, creating wisps of annulment magic around it. It has grown quite stable since he started.
Then Pythus grins. "mhh, other than that. Your sire is excellent at getting into a competition. Certainly knows how to claim victory if you get what I mean! Though, the rewards of winning are certainly worth it too. I certainly try harder atleast!"
He tosses his sponge in August's face. "Seriously though, your sire has been a great teacher to me. He rules"

Have you gotten 8 and 15 for Kerra? (@commanderhorncleaver)
I have not gotten those two for Kerra and will gladly answer them! Tyty! :D
8. How willing are they to bend/break the rules for their cause (be it selfless or otherwise)?
Kerra doesn't break rules for the hell of it, and she does understand why a lot of the rules that are in place exist. At the same time, though, if rules are in the way, they're going to be bent or full-on broken if required. By and large she tries to bend rather than break rules, particularly when it comes to dicier diplomatic situations, but is she willing to break rules if she considers that the best route forward? Absolutely, 100% yes.
15. What is their favorite and least favorite part of being the commander (or whatever role they play in your canon)?
Favorite: it's a title she's never going to lose, and it's an important part of who she is, and she's proud of it. Even though she's stepped down from the Pact and any sort of official activity now, she's done a lot of good in the role and made a lot of friends that she wouldn't ever trade away.
Least favorite: it's a title she's never going to lose. She may have stepped back, but she'll never fully step away because she still considers saving the world to be her job. If it's in danger, she's jumping back in at least somewhat, forever and always. Sometimes she resents that a little--that she never had an opportunity to become someone who could step away entirely.

(@commanderhorncleaver) gimme dat 1, 2, and 12 for Rinthi~
THANK YOU FOR ASK and once again. Sorry I take an age to reply to these. answers are under the cut!
1. Write a basic lowdown of your OC. What's their deal?
Rinthi is a graduate of the College of Dynamics and a notably skilled mesmer who aspires to achieve the next level, aka true, fully-fledged shapeshifting into a variety of forms, including those of other people. She’s just the kind of person who, when she meets a boundary, almost can’t help but push it to see how far it’ll go.
Her work has led her to the Shiverpeaks, where she’s gained the interest and therefore help of Muni Grimgrave, a norn necromancer who does a lot of work with souls as well as bodies. She hopes to integrate his knowledge, as well as that of the traditions of Spirit-powered shapeshifting, in order to achieve her goals.
Starting out, Rinthi doesn’t really have a larger goal. When she seeks knowledge, it’s for the sake of understanding more about the world. Over the course of the campaign against the Elder Dragons (and various other enemies), she grows to be a lot less focused on herself and starts using her knowledge and power to make a better world.
2. What's their class/elite spec? Weapon of choice? Did they purposely train for it or did it just sort of happen?
Rinthi is a mesmer, specifically a mirage! Her main weapons are her axe Pentekonter, which over the years has been upgraded and adapted so much that it’s barely even the same axe it started out as, a pistol I haven’t come up with a name for yet, and a torch that may or may not get a name. She’s been good at mesmer stuff since she was a kid, and though I know in-game only mirages can use axes, I think Rinthi also grew up learning to use axes for… various purposes.
For mirage-specific stuff, in adulthood the Crystal Desert is a notable location for her (she gets involved with the Balthazar stuff via Egg), and I imagine Rinthi as basically. Having macgyvered her way into becoming a mirage by just using what’s around her. She’s a wildly adaptable person who uses her skills in unexpected ways, and mirage abilities would come pretty naturally to her. Not to say that she didn’t learn it with anyone else’s influence, but it wasn’t so much formal training as it was her noticing what other people could do and recreating it herself, as well as asking questions where she can.
12. What's something they could talk about for hours at length?
Pretty much any of her current interests, and probably several of her past ones. Just whatever she finds fascinating and knows a lot about, and if it’s something she doesn’t know a lot about, she’s equally happy to let someone who does go on for hours about it. She especially likes at least thinking a lot about how people work and the complex social interactions that go on in the world, but she doesn’t talk about it much, mostly because it kind of. defeats the purpose of being good at social manipulation if you go around telling everyone how good you are at it.

Charr Posting 2/3 (big cats good)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oberon Furyhorn
Every society has the "model citizen" that the public all aspires to be, and Oberon Furyhorn was that individual in his time
As talented with a blade as he was with his tools, Oberon was fit for almost every and any task that was asked of this Centurion, his warband was held up to the highest regard and for good reason!
Oberon was living the dream... and then he seemingly woke up from it. Nobody but his closest allies know why, but out of nowhere, Oberon began to neglect his responsibilities, started to show no respect for his fellow authorities, and above all else-- he became disillusioned with charr society.
The biggest display of such was when he intervened with the decision made to include his cub, Sigmund, in a culling. Oberon is no doubt the sire to many cubs, which is what made it so surprising that he aimed to spare this one.
The former Centurion, despite no longer holding as much power as he used to, is still regarded as a man of many talents, and if you could get this brash old man to work with you, you wouldn't regret it! Stay on his good side, or else you may see why he was put on trial more than a few times. As of now, Gaius Horncleaver is the only other charr known to have wrangled this stallion under his control, proving to be a lifelong companion he'd hold dearly.
On a... lighter note, despite his old age, the charr acts with the energy (and libido, hue) of a charr a quarter of his age! He's no slouch, and won't back down from any challenge or trial put in front of him, using his custom blade to cut down anything in his way!

May I ask about Kheir's duties in the Legion? We memed about him being assigned to watch Horncleaver's crew, but I'm unsure how serious that was--that in mind, how do you think he feels about his kin, whether or not Horncleaver's the commander?
As of right now, he's a typical Ash legion spy. He's young though, and it's clear to his superiors he'll go far despite his short stature. His main role is scouting, reconnaissance, and sniffing out any lawbreakers or traitors. He's always the first of his warband to come back with actionable intel.
He could potentially watch over Horncleaver's crew, if any of them have been acting up. It's a matter of if they're doing anything that Ash legion could find useful.
As for kin, he'd have respect for his grandsire Horncleaver, but it'd be more of a military respect. After all, he's a soldier, while Horncleaver is a centurion. He would probably think August is a bit too unprofessional at times, acts in ways that might not be very soldier like, but then Kheir is probably a little stuck up in that way. He'd probably get along great with Raevik, similar vibes from the both of them as quiet, efficient Ash soldiers.
Kheir has time to really learn to be more himself rather than 'Ash Soldier' though. (And that is when he gets more open about his fondness of insects.)
Oh and, don't bother mentioning his sire Fulvius to him. He thinks his sire is a useless sack of fur and would rather not have his blood relation to him brought up.

vague idea that i have yelled at horncleaver about but i want a record of it here as well because i think i am onto something significant and it’ll very likely make it into my own canon as soon as i get it out of the jungle, so
havoc airship. name tbd but it’s either something super on the nose like Havocbringer, something punny like the Flying Ascalonian, or if they let Sivris name it, Bolt (short for “one bolt away from being a giant hunk of scrap metal” she will tell anyone who cares to ask)
they salvage one from maguuma a short time after mordremoth. being on the airship (after the events leading Into the jungle) is scary but so was the feeling of being in the jungle and having so much Stuff surrounding them at all times, so the open air is pretty refreshing, actually.
i’ve been describing scenes with havoc as taking place inside of/in front of a large squad-size tent with small individual compartments, separated by curtains. i want more Scene Diversity dammit. an airship should be (slightly) bigger than their field tent. AND it can move by itself AND sivris would absolutely baby the thing. she would decorate it in her incredibly dubious style (spikes. it would involve spikes. and flags in weird places) and because no one else has the mechanic’s skills or sheer daring needed to rappel over the edge of the thing to remove the spikes, they stay. sivris is also temporarily patching up some of the vine-holes (just until they find large-enough scrap metal, she keeps saying) with suspiciously skull-patterned knitwork. (it’s ako’s)
they can take their airship places and they would use her instead of borrowing various other characters’ ships where the canonical Commander does in the story. they could (Temporarily) Adopt People depending on what i want the layout to be like and if they have spare room.
this is an opportunity for me to come up with More Guys for the Crew bc we all do trust sivris but we also still want to hang out with her so we should hire someone to mechanic our ship full time. perhaps this mechanic also comes with a little crew themself. i’ve already halfway designed a romantic interest for tavryn amongst this crew and i am dreaming of this being the merging point of the vigil magic-user squad and the warband.
at some points they go back to the jungle and reclaim more ships, with their extended crew. the second ship they yoink will be the stable-ship, because that is Renfrac’s one and only condition for traveling with them this way and Scothin’s getting real glib with his asking about taking Elyra with them.
i am not at all planning out a whole airship village in my brain already, what do you mean, aha

3. Do they have actual expertise in the other weapons their profession can wield or just the ones they currently use?
Gaius is mostly proficient with bladed weapons, and prefers knives, longswords, and on occasion, greatswords. Watching/training with Naz has actually given him some proficiency with axes as well, but for the most part he prefers short-to-mid-range weapons that are good for throwing and quick movements. He likes knives because of the different ways grips can be adjusted for a variety of attacks.
10. What is/What would be a lie about them they WISH was true?
Phlunq is mostly indifferent to others' opinions of him, but I think he does wish he could be as empty-minded and sole-focused as people think. Unfortunately, that head is not empty.

Gaius, as a hypothetical (or not, for sake of the ask) the Legions sentence you to a (short) term of service as a Scortum. What kind of services would you be willing to provide or would you be happy to do?
Horncleaver blinks at you. "Uhm. Is it not a scortum's job to do whatever a client asks?"

Please, give us 5, 7, 10 for Gaius from the commander asks
Ask Game
5. For champions of Aurene, what would/do their branded forms look like?
If Gaius were to have a branded form, I imagine the majority of the transformation would be extensions of his existing prismatic horns. For example, the brand stretches down across his forehead, and in particular on his left side swaths across his face and to his missing eye, granting a prismatic eye there. Aside from that, the idea that it would be fairly simple from there, but still extremely noticeable is that all of his existing scars would then be branded over. Think about that... a charr covered in brand scars like that. Especially notable for Gaius, given his impaling scar from PoF.
7. For Commanders with love interests, how does being Commander affect the relationship dynamic and/or feelings on either side?
Gaius has had a number of notable issues with romance while being commander.
Rytlock, upon returning from the Mists in HoT and being continually prodded by Gaius to explain what happened in the Mists, voices some thoughts that imply Gaius to be jealous of him on account of no longer being the only one with mist-jumping powers (Revenant longsword 3 is a tactic Gaius made use of for a long time while in possession of his soul dagger). The situation that springs from this speaks for the issues of two late-forties men who aren't good at communicating and have a lot of stress on their shoulders.
Efram, later, is subjected to a lot of the holdover from Gaius' situationship with Rytlock, most nominally Gaius being extremely slow to act on his feelings even after they've acknowledged that their attraction and interest is mutual. Even after that, there's the problems of the long-distance relationship of Ef being based [where-fucking-ever New Flame is, but I imagine they still operate out of Grothmar for a period] as well as Gaius not only being based in the Citadel, but often moving for work (as expected as the commander).
10. What is the most common criticism levied against them by detractors?
Early in Gaius' career with the Pact, it wasn't uncommon for him to be accused of allowing preventable casualties, though this is something he would explain as tactical, for a time. However, after Tower Down in the 70 missions, it's his interaction with Medic Ceera that first changes how he feels about 'acceptable losses'.
A second criticism sent his way is by charr, especially during IBS and his subsequent run for Imperator: he's never fucking there. I won't go into too much cause I ramble about it a lot, and it's not an uncommon theme for charr commanders, but it's part of why he's so adamantly around and also not even involved in SotO.

Raevik twirls a dagger in his paw as he looks at his brother "August. A moment? I think we have something to discuss." "A while ago I was trailing a rogue mesmer, specialized in mirror magic. Feel like the old man might appreciate us working together so... you wouldn't happen to know anything?"
Raevik stops twirling his dagger, his eyes glazing over slightly as he sighs. "Used to know what I'd do when I found him, now... I think I might just want to find him to figure things out for myself. Can you help? Might give us a chance to 'bond', figure some things out"
August plucks Raevik's dagger from his paw with a nudge of his mind; he plucks the knife from the air and begins to twirl it, watching his brother with interest as he debates how to address the problem.
"While I won't deny Horncleaver would likely be over the moon to hear of us getting along, you do realize I don't know every rogue mesmer from the legions?"
He lifts the dagger into the air, continuing to spin it over his finger. "But I can help. What all do you know about this guy? How'd you wind up on his tail?"

After struggling and failing to get out from Gaius's hold, Falx slumps to the floor, defeated once again. Between exhausted pants he blurts out "hey old man, why are you so damn focused on knifeplay? Can't you teach me something useful like that spell-popping thing you do?"
The older charr holds tight to Falx for a moment longer before releasing him, standing upright with a sigh that belies an apparent lack of effort. "Spell-breaking, cub. It's called spell-breaking."
"Knife-play is intimate, Falx. You're close to your opponent--you pay attention to them." Gaius stretches, and his spine pops noisily. "My style of spell-breaking is layers, and you don't pay attention to the basics of how I move as it is."
He watches Falx as he heaves for breath, and shakes his head. "I know your magic's decent, but you flounder when someone's got you beat. It's a two-fold lesson: one, I want you to pay attention; two, I want you to develop another strength."

Question for August, where does your love for the color pink come from? Any special reason or is it simply to remain in theme with your mesmer magic?
August laughs, as if you've told a joke, rather than asked a question. "You realize I can make my magic any color I wanted, right? Rather pedestrian subject, with abilities like mine."
He laughs again--though at first it was a derogatory gesture, he does seem to truly be enjoying himself. Across the office, his sire has glanced this way, but doesn't seem bothered enough to interrupt, and quickly turns back to his papers.
"Pink stands out," he starts once he's settled down a bit, "But at the same time, pink is rather understated. No one expects a lot from it. Cubs like it; I hear humans tend to think it's rather feminine. No one expects something like me."
He holds his paw out, beans up, on the desk, and a curved, pink blade appears over half a second as you watch in a flash of rose-hued light.
"I could do this without the fanfare," he says, voice calm, and when you look at him, an array of similar blades floats over his shoulders, though there was no indication of their being summoned. "But if I did, it would just be over without a thought. I like when people recognize something they didn't expect to not only be a threat, but the threat."

How did Gaius feel about Trahearne as a Marshal?
Gaius was not particularly impressed with Trahearne at the time, especially not at first, but he had to admit that Trahearne had the heart for it.
There's a lot of things where one would expect "But this is a cabbage patch kid!" would come in, but Gaius isn't the sort to belittle folk in spite of their achievements. Trahearne's circa what, almost 25 during Personal Story? Though this is definitely not something he's really been trained for, he's still been trained and has ideas what he's doing. He's young for such a position, but it's "what he's meant for", for however much Gaius puts worth into that.
Further, Trahearne is a huge "I'm gonna read about this" kinda dude, and that's something else Gaius respects. Notably, I also think he asks Gaius' advice and opinions on how to move forward whenever applicable.
In the event that you're curious if Gaius envies him the position: the answer is no. Gaius, at this point in time, is far more interested in the military power and showing that his prowess as a strategist and leader is worth talking about. The politics don't interest him, but folk knowing who did all the management of the military does.

1, 2, 17, 19 and 33 for the Horn warband :D
Ask Game
Which Legion does the warband belong to?
The Horns are a proud Iron warband, though most if not all of its members have ties to other legions (and there's even some non-charr members).
2. How and when was the warband formed?
The Horns were formed by Gaius in 1325 during his Personal Story for the sake of clearing his name after he'd been charged with a series of murders. The original members of the band included himself, Oberon Furyhorn, Sigmund Shieldhorn (later Brighthorn), and Augustus Silverhorn. Later additions include Terang Bulan Shorthorn, (Pyromancer) Kudo Pyrehorn, and (Alchimancer) Phlunq Blighthorn.
17. Have they ever gotten in big trouble with superiors?
As a warband, technically no. As individuals, yes, multiple of them have. Gaius being a centurion at the start of Personal Story puts him and the band in a position of slight advantage that allows them to get away with a lot more than your average band would, but also, Gaius is genuinely rather straight-laced and keeps them all honest.
19. What's the overall social dynamic in the warband like? (chill and friendly, harsh and hierarchical, like family, etc)
Gaius runs the Horns the same way he does his subordinates, as a centurion and as commander, which is to say that he trusts everyone to do the jobs he sets for them, and will generally allow individuals to employ whatever means they deem necessary as long as the work is done when and how he needs it. In particular, when recruiting Oberon, this was a big point of interest because of Oberon's history as violent and more than willing to challenge and kill superiors he disagreed with. Gaius approached him with conditions for recruitment and assured him that if things were done as needed, they'd work well together, and Oberon, with no reason to argue with guidelines so clearly placed, has worked out with little issue. Being that the Horns are mostly an administrative warband, this isn't usually a huge problem, but overall the point is just that Gaius is an attentive commanding officer who does good research when recruiting folk, and also is willing to meet people halfway. Respect and discipline are expected because of what exactly it is they do, but again, as long as the job gets done, do it how you want.
33. Bonus question: trivia time!
Currently, the warband acts as Horn Gladium Outreach based out of the Black Citadel, which is a business that does effectively what it sounds like. In the time after IBS, Gaius went to reorganize and establish an office in the Citadel where Iron gladium could go to seek assistance with being reassigned within the Legions, or alternatively, seek advice on finding a place outside the Legions. The operations quickly expanded, as Gaius acts essentially as a therapist with helping gladium come to terms with their circumstances and find healthier places of mind before seeking work. Oberon and Sigmund in particular develop prostheses for those in need.

3, 5, 11, and 13 for the old man. (5 for the bastard old man if you're feeling up to it)
Ask Game
Gaius
3.Are they an outsider? Do they feel like one?
At this point in his life, Gaius is sort of over this--but specifically in regards to his life as commander and a soldier of Iron Legion, yes, he's very much an outsider, and even now that he is not commander and he is more active as a Centurion again.
During IBS (and after, when he ran for Imperator of Iron) it became increasingly notable for him that he was no longer a member of what he'd devoted a lot of his life to--and also that he wasn't sure he wanted to be a part of that. He's gone to great lengths to remedy some of the problems--reducing his time away, being more active as a Centurion. Opening Horn Gladium Outreach.
All of that aside, though, he's still regarded as something removed from the rest. He's well-regarded, yes, but he's still different.
5. How do they feel about their family? Chosen and/or biological?
Gaius has a complex relationship to his family, perhaps largely due to the natural happenings of charr family groups, but then also the unique circumstances he's experienced. It's pretty well known that he's sired a lot of cubs, but he doesn't actively go out of his way to be involved with most of them--at the same time, he does keep up with most of them, and he's generally proud of all of them. With his turn for becoming more (knowingly) paternal, he's found that he actually greatly enjoys parenthood. He loves his siblings Lucasta and Silas. Most of his conflict comes from his sire, and the siblings or cubs who are likewise very, erm, antagonistic. Oryen is the most prominent example, of course, but he simply doesn't know how to engage the issue. It's not that he can't kill his sire, but he struggles coming to terms with the desire to do so-- it's a dislike so intense, that often he just acknowledge any of his thoughts about him.
Until Oryen's in his face again.
11. Obligation or initiative, why do they do what they do? Is there something/someone specific that motivates them? (bonus: has their motivation changed over the years?)
Obligation and initiative are equally strong motivations for Gaius. For a long time, it was internal motivation that made him strive to work and improve and lead and be strong. By the time LWS4 comes and moves through IBS and into EoD, it's much more obligation.
Gaius hits a point of disdain towards what it means to be a legion charr that he doesn't quite recover from as much as he finds new meaning and cause to keep doing what he does: he wants those who come after him to enjoy a more bountiful and opportunistic life. He wants the Legions to experience what they can be outside of war.
It'd be an understatement of the century to say this is different from what it was before--his entire life prior to Personal Story was spent trying to be the Iron guy.
When his outlook of obligation to the charr returns to initiative and a desire to make things better, it's also a turn back from his low point of "nobody else cares enough, it's pointless" into "we have to improve, so I'm going to take those steps to try."
13. Is there anyone they'd like to be closer to than they are?
I noted before that Gaius adores his siblings Lucasta and Silas, and I think above all, they're who he wants to be closest to. He struggles with connecting with them for so many reasons: age, traumas, general neurodivergent tendencies. Lucasta in particular is someone he's tried to support a lot, and he feels he's failed in a lot of ways, but he hopes just being there helps when he can't do anything else.
Oryen
5. How do they feel about their family? Chosen and/or biological?
Like his beloved son, Oryen has a complex view of his family, and has no chosen family. In his specific case, his cubs--his brood, per se-- are an extension of him. They're all his, and their deeds are a reflection of him. This also extends to his grandcubs. He views Gaius and Lucasta and Silas and any others who've left his direct purview as "wayward" but within arm's reach. He allows them their independence, because that's the point of his experiment: what will they do now? He's overall intrigued by it all, even if by what he lets on, he's unimpressed at the best of times and actively disappointed at worst.
But they're his, no matter what.
