My OCs - Setia

This is the most complicated blorbo of mine, and also the most challenging to write. I love you, little blonde bean of mine.

Setia (formely known as Setia Khachaturyan) [approximately 40, he/him, pansexual, human, Armenian, now based in Vermillion]

Coming from Vermillion's neighbouring state of Armenia, Setia is the son of its 5th and incumbent president, Vahagn Khachaturyan, born in Yerevan where his father later stayed on a position of the city mayor.

Raised in highly intellectual and democratic surroundings, Setia as a young man goes to the Vermillian border to negotiate in an armed conflict. There he is facet with Larat but "no one was in the room where it happens". As far as we all know, he was beaten in a direct fight and taken as a slave with no pardon, back to capital, to the royal palace.

His past 20 years, along with a short initial exchange over the phone with his father, being stripped of his surname, and having to wear his collar constantly, saw Setia's rise to power.

Knowing when to keep his mouth shut, when to speak up, when to sweet talk and when to unzip his pants, he made friends left and right, pushing him and Larat higher on the social ladder. She became the general of the army, he became the only servant on the Council, and the right hand to the royal family, helping them raise Merah, too.

His friendship with Larat throughout the years is bordering romance but nobody has ever seen Setia devoted to anyone. His overflowing blonde hair (he has a ban on cutting them as a slave male on the royal orders) and careful eyes know how to take care of someone, but not really how to take. It's really hard to say what he thinks, because he keeps so much to himself, being a discreet, but verocious servant.

Seeing his dad rising to power, first as a Minister of High Tech Industry in 2021, and then the President in 2022, Setia starts making some more pressing moves. His love to Vermillion (but is it really to the country?) is unwavering, and he would do what it takes to push it into a new era of gender equality and slavery abolition.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he is the first person to come in contant with the Eodum deity and he swore his endless devotion in exchange for Eodum's help in pushing his agenda. The plan so far doesn't run as smoothly as the two would expect, but they press on. When Ubisi learns about this, she sends Red Sickness on him, in an attempt to make him into an example, and if not for Life's intervation he would be dead by now.

And he's in the middle of a really serious situation, because the Queen, after death of Garura, viciously appointed him her next husband, out of probably spite.

His personality is best observed when he interacts with others, as he is a hell of a mess, and his motives are rarely clear or obvious, making him a person some confide in, yet others despise and are constantly on edge when around him. He indeed can command respect, and he could even as a slave.

Larat is the most murky one, they definitely slept together, went to drink together outside of palace, they know each other best from all of the OCs in Vermillion. What bonded them so and how is unknown, but one would get killed over the other, even though it doesn't manifest itself in formal situations (like the Council punishing Larat for getting involved with Florence - and he would see Queen's verdict to the T, if he had to). They were the ones putting the whole Eodum mess in motion.

Princess Merah also once or twice landed in bed with him, but mostly friendzones Setia and loves him as the best uncle she never had (which yes, weird). She is not smart enough to undestand any of his manipulativeness.

Next person on his list would be Adam, who being a somewhat younger slave, motivates Setia to go through with his plans of freeing as many people as he can. Just not yet. Adam being his personal servant looks up to him in all waves and from a defiant slave of Lady Shiroi, transforms into a dutiful left hand to the future King, loving every bit of attention and protectiveness Setia has over the man.

Setia couldn't be understood without his ties to Eodum. The bratty demi-god had to be offered something to help with the vision of equal Vermillion. The only thing Setia could offer, because he owned it completely at that time, was himself. Since then, he spends hours on end every night (but around 5 minutes of time on Earth) in the Inbetween realm, getting forcefully obliterated by Eodum in blind submission. After the ordeal, Eodum knowing how each bruise and cut was dealt - he heals Setia by carefully reversing time on each wound, becoming a better and better healer in the process. It turns out later, that this is the only kind of attention Setia can take on - one violently imposed on him, hurting him. Even when Eodum is pretty confident in his skills, Setia will come back for more.

This circle of pain kind of closes on Queen Merahtua, who suspecting a coup rising in her own palace, tricks Setia to join her as the King upon becoming a widow. Their toxic relationship on one hand gets the brilliant public side where they always agree, never argue, and do what's best for the country, and their private life with barely any speaking, silent dinners together and Setia using her in the bedroom, as he feels disgusted by having to be there and taking it all on her. Whether she truely enjoys it (being dominated for the first time in her royal life, and by an ex-slave to that), or he is just waiting for him to take it a step too far so she can frame him, remains unknown as of yet.

Her step-granddautgher, future queen Jennifer, also plays a cruel game of chess with Setia. Despite having similar goals for the country, their personal goals don't align much and both of them try to be one step ahead of the other. Their informants and allies sometimes even serve both of them, and when their paths cross, they are on high alert. Setia deeply understands her cold, calculating movements and holds her in the highest of respects, because he finds an equally good player in her, Jennifer being half his age, and maybe his successor. She on the other hand knows, he was always the most powerful figure of the last decade in Vermillion, a type of a shadow cabinet figure, wants to keep him in check, but squeeze everything useful from him, as the time progresses and her coronation is getting closer.

Probably there is no right answer to the question whether Setia is a positive character or not. He has his devotions, and would fight much more subtly than nail and tooth to make sure the lesser evil (at least, in his opinion) is achieved for everyone involved. But he is a realist, he knows there is never a good ending and he can just minimize the loses. Fear people like Setia. Because they just might know what they want from you.

It was 2015 and I was in search of sth new to obsess about as I have been getting a little bored of les mis, especially since all my friends have long since moved on to other things. I have been seeing more and more random drarry stuff on my dash but since as a kid I was all in favour of canon and canon only I never paid it any mind. But then I saw THIS fanart and it was like a switch - I got intrigued and decided to read a fic to check out what is this ship really about. Which brings me to...

It was All Our Secrets Laid Bare by @firethesound - my very first drarry fic and I will never forget the awe I was in while reading it - I loved the characterisations and the worldbuild, the plot with its mystery and the awesome style it was written in - and it made me so thirsty for more 😂 So I then spent the next couple of months reading drarry fics in secret and total denial bc after I mentioned that I might like this ship now one of my rl friends made so much fun of me for it 🙄 A few fics more and I finally decided to fuck what others think and I drew my first drarry fanart ☺️

Why can't you quit them?

Easy: the community 😍 Drarry Squad is a very special bunch of people that are so welcoming and kind and talented! I can't see myself getting bored of the fics either, because both old and new fans keep coming up with more and more ideas for them and their writing styles are also insanely good - often way better than in published stuff out there. And drarry artists are a contant inspiration for me as well 😍😍😍 What's also helping a lot is the amount of Fests we have - no matter if I'm a participant or a reader, they're always so much fun!! 🙌💞

Who breaks your heart more often?

Both! Harry with his past traumas and the fact he was manipulated his whole childhood and led to sacrifice his life for a cause, who now has to learn how to trust and not be a saviour anymore... And Draco, a kid who chose the wrong side and has to live with the consequences, often down and out and feeling undeserving of true love 😭

Ideal career for Harry? For Draco?

Tbh I enjoy a variety! I could say I don't think Harry would be happy as an Auror but then again I'd inhale those casefics like candy 😂 I like them working with kids and animals, or doing something creative, or Draco with a Muggle job...

Harry and Draco are being sent to a desert island for a week with plenty of food and water. Each is allowed to bring three additional items (no wands). What do they bring?

ok ok here's one that i have not written down yet bc i Cannot on my life write crackfic and if i ever do this one it's gotta be done right. but it lives rent free in my brain so here goes:

haunted house at the edge of town only it's run like the mystery shack. and it's not doing so great. [not-stan-pines] is getting a little bit desperate, asks the ghosthunters in town (the fentons) if they can help him, and what he gets is danny, hired on the cheap to backseat haunt for a weekend. note: not-stan does not *actually* believe in ghosts. he thinks the fentons are cons like him.

unfortunate tour group includes:

-Disgruntled Family Of Four: The Dad, who shelled out to see the ghost and they had better see the ghost, dammit; The Mom, a basic karen; The Son, who is a shitty lil snot that won't keep his hands off anything; The Daughter, who wants a selfie with the ghost for insta clout

-Real Psychic, whose job is to actually appease restless dead

-Fake Psychic, whose job is to sell the idea that hes appeasing restless dead (longstanding rivalry with Real Psychic)

-Paranormal Investigator, Professional (every ghosthunter tv show ever)

-Paranormal Investigator, Amateur (wes) [an avid (read: annoying) fanboy of Professional]

-Skeptic, doing another article for aliens-ghosts-and-bigfoot-aren't-real magazine

-Not-Stan's Ex-Wife, Along With New Pretty Bf, and they are both doing very well and definitely only came to show off how well they were doing. nothing to do with ghosts; they serve only to ruffle not-stan's feathers

and, hiding in the cellar because he doesn't want to deal with any of this Stupid Bull Shit, is the actual ghost of the guy who died like a century ago. please leave this poor man's house alone he just wants to go to bed :(

so basically take all this and put it in a jar and shake it a few times. resulting shenanigans include, but are not limited to:

-not-stan gets ahold of danny's thermos, slaps a pricetag on it and chucks it into the giftshop

-subsequently, wes actually buys it and immediately sucks danny up with it

-a seance that goes horribly wrong for a wide variety of reasons, not the least of which is the contant bickering between Real/Fake Psychic

-danny is a bit overmounted on this one and has to bail partway through to get backup; might or might not get ahold of sam and tuck and convince them to hold the fort for him in the meantime

-said backup might be vlad, because he is the Most Dramatic Bitch danny knows. yes danny will owe him a favor afterwards. yes he knows thats a bad spot to be in

-danny meets Cellar Ghost, is appalled that the guy cant get a nap in his own house; also very insulted that not-stan doesnt believe in ghosts when there is a real one (!!) in his literal basement, and hes been there the whole time. wtf

-makes a deal with The Daughter at some point: he'll let her get that selfie with him if she helps him out with a thing

-she immediately posts it to her insta and wes sees it and it drives him batshit

-also, if u think these people are staying together as a group at any point throughout this whole mess, you are wrong. theyre not.

-at least one scooby doo chase scene. just because.

-ghost therapy w/ Real Psychic and Cellar Ghost, tragically interrupted before she can lay the poor fella to rest

-but at least that puts the two of them, plus danny, on the same side, whatever side that even is

anyways. i think about this one a lot. as soon as im capable of writing smth without tipping the angst bucket on it, it'll be all over for u fools

Activities - What do they like to do with their s/o? How do they spend their free time with them?

Ace would really, and I mean really, enjoy waking up next to you. Think: a well-used hotel room in some dingy Las Vegas motel, the morning after some spectacular night where money was gambled and memories were made. The sun peaks in from closed curtains, stretching across the shared bed in golden fingers. He opens his eyes and is greeted by the sight of you lying next to him, still fast asleep. His perfect partner in crime - a most wonderful face to wake up to. For a moment Ace would think that he’s still stuck in a dream somewhere far away, but as he’d watch your chest slowly breathe out he would allow himself to soften to your presence. Ace shuffles closer and drapes his arm over your shoulder, content to be the bigger spoon as you subconsciously moves deeper into his embrace, guarding you until you finally wake. 

Comfort - How would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?

When Ace notices that something with you is off, his mouth starts running and it never stops. He’ll be glued to your side, stuck in a contant state of chewing your ear off with the ramblings of nonsense he had somehow managed to conjure up. If you turn around and ask him to stop or to just be quiet, explaining that his noise did not help your growing anxieties, Ace would simply grin and lean closer. “Darling, if you aren’t hearing my voice then you’re hearing the one in your head. And that sucker is not being too nice to you right now. So until it changes its tune,” he plants a firm kiss on your forehead, his hand secured at the nape of your neck to provide structure and comforting reassurance to his affection, “You’re stuck with mine.” 

Equal - Are they the dominant one in the relationship, or rather passive?

Ace is a strong bottom and what I mean by this is, though he’d be more than happy to be the dominant one in the relationship, there is no denying that he goes all gooey whenever you take control. Secretly he likes to be told what to do, when to kiss, how to kiss etc. He’s a loudmouth but that does not necessarily mean he’s the boss. He allows life to flow over and through him, going along for the ride as the ocean of everything takes him out to sea. It would have to be you who grounds him, ties him to reality, and forces him to act. 

Jealousy - Do they get jealous easily? How do they deal with it? 

In all honesty, probably not. Ace would likely not really care if you started hanging around other survivors or showed an inclining interest in others. “We’re in hell, baby.” He says, shrugging his shoulders, “Live your best, damned life.” Ace lives a very polyamorous life and likes to flicker about different partners like a honeybee amongst summer flowers. But, of course, he will always yearn for you, looking in his partners for traces of you that he could cling to and love. Ace would not hold you back and would only hope that you would return to him one day.  

Love Confession - How would they confess to their s/o? 

Ace would be very upfront about his affection towards you. It would be an instantaneous reaction, the stark of a fuse that lights the bomb of passion within him. It's you, the one he has always wanted, no, NEEDED in his life. And here you finally are, in his more dire hour. How poetic. It would be very apparent to you and everyone else that he had a fancy for you - Ace did not hide behind boyish words or half-faces. He knows what he wants and what he wants is you, baby. Prepare to be pestered to no end by the man, following you around everywhere with those pleading, love-struck puppy eyes. Reject him as many times as you’d like Ace does not give up, not when he has already set his mind on having you.

The moment, however, when you realize that all the sweet nonsense he has been spewing for the past few weeks might have a basis of truth is when stricken with inconceivable exhaustion, the weight of existing only to be a chew toy for some goliath monster slowly crashing down on him, you notice the slightest downward twitch of his smile. His eyes momentarily lose that dazzling glitter and his mouth, for once, remains still with clenched teeth. You see that he is human and that he is in pain. He is a man under all that booze and talk. You cup his face in your hands - it's the first time you have touched him so intimately and catches him off guard. At your embrace, he flickers and you see comfort replace grief and love replace despair. It was stupid, but in his own weird way, he really did love you.

Nicknames - What do they call their s/o?

Any and everything under the sun. Any nickname you can think of he’s already called you. Angel, darling, love-of-my-life, he’s used them all on you. 

His favorites are ‘My One and Only’, ‘shnookums’ and ‘My Don Juan’ (he’s old, he’s unbearably sappy and he loves sprinkling in obscure references into his flattering - he thinks it makes him look more intelligent and cultured. Gosh, he’s so romantic)

Wild Card - A random Fluff Headcanon.

Ace loves to call you his lucky charm. He claims that all his good-grace and luck comes directly from you and only you, rubbing off like dust. When you scoff and contradict with “Weren’t you lucky before you come here? Before we met?” You use the word ‘lucky’ very loosely. Ace brushes you off easily with the counterargument, “Oh but I was not. Not really.” Suddenly his hand is around your waist and he pulls your hips into his crotch, digging his chin in close enough for you to feel his stubble scratch your face, “How could I have been lucky before if I had never met you~”

hello everyone! my name is summer and I am super excited to be apart of this roleplay with everyone. i am bringing you inhyeon aka scarlet, the hitwoman for the night bloods. she’s got an old timey way of talking and absolutely thinks that she is better than you. she’s a sharp shooter and can cut to the bone with her words alone but she’s not all bad, at least if you’re close to her. I don’t have her plots page done just yet (it’s in the process) but you can find her dossier and her background if you want to get a better understanding of who she is. 

the cut is the shortened version of her history if you don’t feel like reading a lot as well as some of the most bare bones plot you have ever seen. anyway, I’m looking forward to writing with each and every single one of you and if you’re interested in getting some connections / plots with me and my little elf, feel free to like this post and I’ll come to you.

BACKGROUND

tw: blood, murder, abuse, gang shit

so her parents were actually murdered when she was about 10 or so and she was taken by an unknown vampire into an organization where they basically threw her and 19 others together to learn how to be assassins

she learned really quickly not to distinguish herself to her peers and was just mediocre at everything so as to not draw attention to herself because when she was 20 they were all basically told that they would have a huge fight to the death melee and the lone survivor would move on (cause you know everyone else was dead)

basically it was everyones mistake to write her off cause she murdered as many as she could in cold blood and was ultimately the only survivor of her class as she had intended all along

from there she basically worked for this organization and quickly became their top assassin. she had a hand in a number of p.olitical assassinations over her long life so far but also just in general. 

about 10 years ago she got her revenge by killing her mentor, all the heads, and anyone important in  her organization for what they inflicted on her and afterwards using a contant with the night bloods she joined their ranks as a hitman. 

now she just does her job but she has no real loyalty to her gang, their reputation and protection was of use to her and thats why she joined at all. she could care less about it, the other gangs, or anything in it because in her mind it doesn’t really pertain to her. she just plays a good girl.

INHYEON AKA SCARLET

so as stated before, she is a mything elf or a high elf so she’s stop traffic in the daylight white, has bloody garnet eyes, and her hair is a pretty lavender so you can clock her species like pretty obviously. she is very small though, stands at about 4′11 (150ish cm)

she has a tendency to observe the weakness of everyone and everything around her just in case she needs to use it for whatever reason. her life as an assassin taught her to always be stronger than her opponents and to her thats....almost everyone. 

she absolutely thinks she’s better than everyone based purely on the fact that she is a mythical elf and also because she has a strong skillset that she relies on (liam neeson from taken anyone?) and she can be dismissive if she thinks she has no need for you

however despite that she can be charming and elegant as well because half of her skill set is being beautiful and charismatic to get people to lower their guards. it just depends on if she thinks that it will work in her favor or not. 

she is fiercely loyal to those that she sees value and friendship in. like go to the end of the worlds to protect you, kill all who oppose you, happy to fuck someone up if they look at you wrong fierce. there are very few bonds she cherishes and when she does? well, lets just say your enemy is her enemy.

Watering plants etc. – at the museum at 10 25/.. – Lecture 12 De Blainville from 10 50/.. to 12 18/.. – Lecture 7 Geoffroy Saint Hilaire from 12 1/2 to 1 35/.. – home at 1 50/.. – staid cutting open books De Mirbels Elements vegetable physiology etc. till 2 3/4 – off at 3 – fiacre 1 hour from Place Maubert to Madame Contant’s and then home at 4 – Letter 4pp. and 1 page of envelope from Miss Maclean says she is better, and will set off soon – 2 half sheets full from Miss Hobart – account of the private theatricals at Hatfield Lord Salisbury’s – magnificent doings – Mr Charles Stuart will have 2 months leave and will go to the Rhine the end of this month – 

Forest dressed my hair – dressed – off to the Embassy to dinner at 6 5/.. – Lady Stuart ready – I the 1st arrived but soon came Lady Isabella Blatchford and Lord and Lady Lonsdale and an oldish girl who afterwards recognised me and whom I find to be Miss Thompson sister to Mr George Thompson of Sheriff Hutton – there were 1 or 2 other ladies, Lady Eastnor, the 2 Miss Berrys and Lady Charlotte Lindsay, and Mr and Mrs Hamilton Hamilton, a starred general and a Colonel Stuart and a Mr Gregory and Messers Ashburham and Scarlette Attachés – went out to dinner with Colonel Stuart and sat between him and the general who talked a good deal – ditto Colonel Stuart that I had really a very pleasant dinner – Knowing almost everybody it was very pleasant too, after dinner – It was then that Miss Thompson asked if she had not met me in York – somehow I did not admire her much – something rather too…. what? free and easy, old girlish, je ne sais quoi? Lord Stuart went to sit by her, and she seemed to amuse him for he laughed (unusual with him at a party?) very heartily – 

Shook hands with Miss Thompson on her going asked where she was that I might call she said with Lord and Lady Lonsdale that this business about the King would of course hurry them off and that she had no time for civilities I very calmly said oh I shall have the pleasure of meeting you somewhere else it was foolish in me to offer to call take a lesson from this and be very backward in such cases at first I really did not recollect her but 

On explaining who she was (Miss Thompson) said I recollected her dancing and that she was very musical to which last she assented – but took no such notice of the former – in fact, on recollection, she danced ridiculously, affectedly, and was stared at and quizzed for it – stayed after all but Lady Eastnor and Lady Charlotte Lindsay and the Berrys to talk to Lady Stuart de Rothesay about our journey – shall hardly (they all think) get off to the Pyrenees, but Lady Stuart de Rothesay agreed we might talk simply of going to Mont d’Or (the baths) and let the rest take its chance really this seems likely enough – 

All went on well so far till just before coming away Lady Stuart took us in the conservatory and gave us some roses this Mr Gregory was there I asked Miss Berry if he was Gregory Williams yes on which I spoke to him said well enough I remembered the pretty green house at remstone he asked how and when I said I had passed a day or two there with the Norcliffes in returning from all seemed well enough but I had scarce got home before the folly of this recognition struck me Miss Hobart spoke of him as vulgar but he had money so he went down with Lord how stupid in me to acknowledge him so unnecessarily and did it seem odd to the party? I stood in my study musing and grieving over it how is it I always do something to regret shall I never do better? in wishing good night so often to Lady Stuart de Rothesay I one time unthinkingly held out my hand and of course we shook hands she really always does it of her own accord that I thought of this too as a folly 

In speaking to Lady Isabella Blatchford of her tour along the Seine (she has taken a house at Saint Germain for a month) said she should or go on return by the Loire – she seemed to attend, and begged me to write her about it which perhaps I shall do –

Friends, How to Write Great Contant that Gets Shared !

In this part I’ll give you many of the writing tips I learned the hard way (by writing terrible blog posts when I started).

Writing Killer Headlines

What causes you to read a blog post?

The title!

It’s the most important thing. Without a good blog title, your post won’t ever get read. A great headline will cause people to click and read your blog.

A bad headline does the opposite.

There is an art and science to writing great headlines. Let’s keep it simple, so you don’t get too bogged down. See if this book is at your library:

I like the book – it’s expensive. It’s a swipe file of headlines you can copy and vary according to your topic. Which is why I say check it out from the library if you can.

I just pulled up on Google.

There is no need to re-invent the wheel – find a good swipe file of headlines and just fill in the blanks.

Here is an exercise you should try:

1. For every blog post write ten headlines (yes, 10) in five minutes.

2. Use a headline analyzer

Headline Analyzers

To create better headlines use a headline analyzer to check your ideas. Both of these are free:

• CoSchedule’s Headline Analyzer checks how good your headline is.

• Emotional Marketing Value Headline Analyzer

You’ll get different results from each because they measure things differently. One might give you a high score and the other a low score for the same headline.

Try not to get bogged down creating the perfect headline. A good headline is better than not publishing your post.

What do you do with all those extra headlines you wrote? Try different versions when you’re sharing your posts on social media. When you share your content, you don’t have to use the same title as the one on your blog.

AVOID USING ALL CAPS IN YOUR BLOG TITLE!

It makes it seem like you are yelling at the reader. Capitalizing one or two words for emphasis is OK!

Writing Really Really Really Really Long Posts

If you want to rank higher in search engine results write longer posts. A blog post that is 1,000 words long is seen as having greater value than a blog post that is 300 words long on the same subject.

Studies have proven this.

At a minimum, your blog posts should be 500 words long. If you have to choose writing three blog posts that are 500 words each or writing one long 1,500-word article on the same topic – write one long article.

I know what you’re thinking –

But I’ll have three articles instead of one!

The more time a reader spends on a single page the better. Search engines record the time readers spend on a page. My best blog posts are the ones that take over 5 minutes to read, and Google ranks them very high in search results.

Proofread, proofread, proofread

The grammar police will arrest you.

• They send emails

• They write nasty comments

• They will never come back to your blog if you write poorly

If English is your second language and you’re writing for an English audience, it’s even more important to get it correct.

But there is an easy fix. Here is the exact process I have used to become a better writer.

1. Write first. Forget about spelling, proofreading, and grammar as you go along. Just write the dang post and get it 95% of the way there.

2. Proofread. Copy/paste your post into Grammarly. Grammarly is a free online proofreading tool. It catches most grammar and spelling errors.

3. Read your blog post out loud to yourself. You’ll catch any remaining errors including things you’ve written that don’t make any sense if you read what you’ve written out loud. Trust me – it works.

Note: I do not write in WordPress. I lost a really long article once because auto-save wasn’t turned on. I’ve never written my posts in WordPress since. I write in Evernote (it’s free) because it helps me keep my content organized.

That’s my process for every blog post. It’s simple, fast, and free. I don’t hire professional proofreaders, and I rarely get the grammar police contacting me.

Create A Schedule (And Stick To It)

To make money blogging you have to blog. It may sound silly, but you can’t make money working if you don’t show up to work.

At a minimum, you should blog at least once a week. If you blog less frequently the chances of you making extra money decrease dramatically. You need content on your blog to attract readers.

If you don’t blog regularly, your readers may not come back or move on to other blogs.

The Secret To Better Writing

The best way to get better at writing (in fact the only way) is to write more and more.

Here’s a tidbit every blogger will tell you – the stuff you write first is going to be terrible. I know because my first blog posts were too. When you look back 2–3 years from now at your earlier posts, you’ll say the same thing we all say:

I can’t believe how bad this is !

It’s normal. A baby doesn’t get up one day and start running 5k races. They fall on their face and butt over and over again. Then they start to wobble a little. Then they fall back down. In a few weeks, they start walking. And so on.

I encourage you just to write. Your writing will get better. My blog writing has improved 10x since I started. It’s because I kept doing it and reading other blogs to see what made their content great.

Action Items :

1. Create a Content Calendar – Keep it simple. Write down the topic of each blog post you will write over the next 30 days. One per week each week for the next four weeks.

2. Create Ten Headlines – Try creating ten headlines for your next blog post using the Headline tools.

3. Read How To Write Great Blog Posts – In my How To Start a Blog Guide I go into great detail about the structure and content of good writing.

UNDER THE BANANA TREES

Many of you don't know I used to be a missionary in the 1980's. I was held up at gunpoint in San Salvador, El Salvador in 1984 during the cilvil war that was going on there. This is a story I wrote for one of my courses at Drake University. The picture is of some of the good military men that protected me and some of the others that I traveled with. Under the Banana TreesBy Tamera Edwards (c)2013 “Any situation can turn into terror.  The most ordinary errand can go bad.  Among Americans in El Salvador there is an epidemic apprehension of danger in the apparently benign.”  -Joan Didion “Salvador” The sun beat hot and warm upon my face under the El Salvadorian sky.  My heart was beating loud within my chest and I could feel it pulsating.  Three militia men dressed in fatigues paced back and forth in front of us wearing their Rambo style ammunition like a badge of honor as they stared us down.  They say that right before you die your life passes before your eyes.  I think that could be true.  A million things went through my mind that day in April of 1984.  Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be held up at gun point at the age of 19.  I was invincible and just out of high school. Nobody dies at the age of 19 in a foreign country doing Gods’ work right?  I had just gotten married 4 months prior to my trip to San Salvador, El Salvador.  I was co-leading of a team of students being sent out by Youth with a Mission (YWAM) an interdenominational missions group based out of Tyler, Texas.  There were 17 of us headed on a yellow school bus traveling through Mexico, Guatemala and then on to El Salvador.  We had obtained a 2 week visa to enter the country.  Our mission was to pass out Bibles, food and clothing to refugees in the countryside on the outskirts of San Salvador.  I was really excited about this trip because we were chartering new territory.  I had been on a mission trip a year earlier to Mexico and Guatemala and this one would take us further south into El Salvador and                                                                                                                                we would be working with needy families in the mountains.  The calling was great and I was ready to go.  I love this kind of humanitarian work.  I have always had a sense of adventure and had learned to travel light, eat strange foods, sleep on hard floors and be in strange surroundings and conditions.I remember thinking at the time; I am too young to die.  What will my parents think when they find out I have been murdered?  Then suddenly I was flooded with anger, why had my coworkers brought camouflaged army canteens on the bus? They knew better.  Our instructions were specific to not bring anything that looked like we were with the U.S. Army or any other armed services.  This included camouflage backpacks, sleeping bags, clothing and canteens.  When we were pulled over in our bus that was struggling to get through the mountains, the first thing the militia men found were the army canteens and began scolding us in their native tongue.  “How could my friends be so stupid?” I thought. “Now we are all in danger.”  We were all asked to get off the bus and line up against it.  I didn’t know much Spanish, just enough to get by.  Our one interpreter wasn’t saying much and we knew what the men meant when they motioned to line up against the bus so we remained silent.  More questions were still running through my mind.  I should have done some research myself to know what was going on politically in El Salvador at the time.  The red flags were popping up everywhere.  Check points along the way and barbed wire fences were a pretty good indication of the unrest in the area.  But I trusted the people in authority above me.  What I didn’t know was who were the right winged people, left winged people, police and guerillas and how much danger were we really in?  Who was really in charge of protecting us as missionaries and Americans?  In my heart I was led by my faith and I believed that God was truly protecting me                                                                                                                                and perhaps it was good at the time that that mindset protected me from what I now know.  The men continued pacing back and forth staring us down.  They talked amongst themselves which made me even more nervous.  I continued to think, “Oh, God in heaven please don’t let them kill us. This can’t be really happening.”  Time seemed to stand still until they finally made a decision on what to do with us.  “Déjà para ir! Subir al autobus!” Translation, ‘Let’s go! Get on the bus!”  We had one translator with us.  Marilyn had lived in Peru for awhile and knew how to speak fluent Spanish.  I thank God she was with us.  Where we were going I had no idea.  All I knew at that moment was that we were still alive but not headed to our destination.The militia men sat in the front of our bus and pointed us in the direction they wanted to take us.  We headed further up the mountain and I feared for our already well travelled school bus that had broken down a couple of times back in the Sierra Madre de Oaxaca in Mexico.  I didn’t think we would make it out of that mountain range.  We had gotten lost and we were off schedule.  The hot, humid tropic air blew on my face and through my hair through the open bus  windows as we made our way up the winding mountainside.  I had more time to think.  Maybe too much time to think.     What I didn’t know then that I know now 30 years later was what serious danger we really were in.  From 1980 to 1992 El Salvador was in the midst of a civil war.  It still baffles me how we were able to obtain a visa to enter the country.   Between Sept. 16, 1980 and Sept. 15, 1981 nearly 7,000 political murders were committed.  Nine hundred twenty-two killed by security forces, 952 by left terrorists, 136 by right winged terrorists and 4,889 by unknown assailants.  (Didion J. p 15-16)   We were entering a politically unstable country.   Men, women and children                                                                                                                                         were being randomly murdered and left by the roadside.  Vultures would eat their eyes and private parts first.         Didion  who was also in El Salvador during the 1980’s writes of a horrific moment in her book Salvador of an event printed in the media during the early 80’s, “Una Madre y sus dos hijos fueron asesinados con arma contante (corvo) por ocho sujetos desconocidos el lunes en la noche”: a mother and her two sons hacked to death in their beds by eight desconocidos unknown men.”  (Didion J. p.15) Many of the assailants left people disfigured so they could not be identified and sometimes would leave a cross carved into their chest.  It was even unknown if police could be trusted because they would cruise the streets with guns pointed out of their windows.         The U.S. embassy sent a body count weekly to Washington D.C.  The killings were often unexplained and it was not known who to blame.  Churches in El Salvador were not neutral ground or a place of safety as they were in America.  Archbishop Romera was murdered while saying mass at the Divine Providence Hospital in El Salvador.  The day of his funeral 30 people were murdered on the steps of the church and another 20 killed in another location nearby.  These events that were occurring we had no idea about.  It wasn’t until all these years later that I would find out what was really happening.  I am pretty sure I would not have made this trip into such a dangerous country.I remember playing with the hem of the soft pink crinkled dress my mom had made me for this trip.  It traveled well and the cotton was perfect in the hot tropical weather.  I thought to myself, “Gosh I love this dress! But would I die in this dress?”  The thoughts were endless as we made our way through the dense tropical terrain.  Finally we arrived to a place in the clearing.  There was a cement building and we were asked to get off the bus and follow the men.  The odd                                                                                                                                thing about buildings in Central America is that often times they would have cement floors and walls but no roofs.  This was the case with this building.  There were probably a couple of reasons for this, I can only guess that it was they may have run out of funds or the weather was generally nice and they didn’t need to have a ceiling. I found this quite humorous.  We were asked to enter and sit at the tables and for the next couple of hours we sat and waited.  There was nothing else to do but look up at the banana trees that seem to be watching over us.  I remember saying a prayer which I am sure the others were doing.  After the militia had seemed to have enough of sitting there staring at us they finally motion for us to head back to our bus.         No longer captive under the banana trees we were free!  As soon as our old yellow school bus carried us back down the mountain we asked Marilyn what the military men wanted with us any way.  She answered, “You’re not gonna believe it, they said they wanted a little more time to look at the beautiful American women.”

the MJ/gwen debacle

“mary jane loved spider-man and gwen loved peter parker / gwen is the better character and love interest than mj.”

i’m sorry, i’m just tired. so i decided to make a master post once and for all bc i am over itttt.

anybody who has been following me longer than a week probably knows i despise gwen. not necessarily because of the character, but because of her fandom. BUT i am going to try my absolute best to remain professional and not let my hatred for the character seep into this. i mean... i am only human so i can’t promise i’ll be perfect, but let’s do this.

let me start this off by saying, i despise the mindset that if you don’t read the comics, you’re a lesser fan, and i despise the people who look down on people who only watch the movies. that is not what this is about. i am not trying to flex my comic book muscles at you. you’re entitled to your opinions and don’t have to justify them or be incredibly knowledgable in your opinions. but if you are only a movie fan, and find yourself spreading FALSE information about a FIFTEEN YEAR OLD inaccurate portrayal of MJ and a five year old portrayal of gwen stacy that is JUST as inaccurate (as her character in the TASM movies are heavily based off of MJ), that’s not cool. do not be that person.

so if you want to know how both relationships went down in the comics, feel free to read on. please be aware this looks like a long ass post, only because i included a lot of comic panels. if you want to just read the text then the post will move along a lot quicker.

gwendolyn maxine stacy. very first appearance in the amazing spider-man #31 with harry osborn and flash thompson. throughout this issue, gwen thinks how despite peter not being built, that he’s smart and good looking, attractive etc. peter has been in his head all day because his aunt was sick.

gwen decides to finally talk to him after thinking that he’s cute.

when peter can’t give her the time of day, she gets icy and storms off. 

some other things happen with peter, still has his mind elsewhere, and gwen stacy tries again.

not being able to handle the fact that he isn’t giving her attention, and getting mad about it. she then isn’t in the next few issues. when she does reappear, she’s revelling in the attention she is getting.

then gwen and peter’s first real interaction happens.

still icy cold towards him. then she doesn’t appear for another few issues. the next time we see her, she persist.

still no luck. she’s still angry and tells him she thinks he’s a coward.

literally all she has done so far since being introduced is be mad lmao. and then she literally just makes fun of him. i’m not even skipping scenes or anything.

sure peter could be more friendly and not so immersed with his secret identity, but you never know what’s going on with somebody, so this behaviour is just immature to me (i mean i blame the writers, but since gwen is a character written by these writers, unfortunately that’s how she is). in the next scene she’s – shocker – still mad, and even tries to slap him. to be fair, peter’s a douche in this scene too. bad bad writing.

idk if this is their way in trying to build up sexy fiery passion or something... but it was just executed so poorly. gwen was mad because peter wasn’t giving her attention so she pouted about it, and then now they are enemies? whaaat.

but i guess that interaction... somehow worked? because in the next scene she’s sticking up for him a little. so that cool of gwen, props.

over the next few issues, not much happens with her. she either just appears and doesn’t say anything, or thinks about peter, or they flirt a little bit like this:

so that was issue #31 to issue #41. 10 issues. of gwen being mad at peter for not paying attention to her, and them starting to flirt a bit when he finally did. 

then in issue #42, mary jane watson is brought up, and gwen is not too please about it, gets pissed off, and takes it out on flash.

peter fights some baddies, goes back home, and then the iconic face it tiger scene with mary jane watson happens 11 issues after gwen’s first appearance.

the next issue we get to take a look at how the blind date is going and... let me warn you....... mary jane talks so fucking weird/funny oh my god. these comics do not age well. her lingo makes me cringe but i love her anyways. what we gather from this is that she’s fun and peter is smitten with her. she’s easy going and is taking drama classes.

she’s care free and doesn’t take herself too seriously.

then rhino stuff happens and peter is thinking of a way to bail on mj, but then she suggests they hop on his motorcycle and drive down to the action to see it for themselves. 

so then pete blows her off cause he has to do spidey things and when they reunite, mj isn’t mad about it, and they actually make plans to hang out some more.

he then bumps into flash, harry and gwen, and they give him a hard time and peter compares gwen to mj, saying that he bet mj wouldn’t stand by like gwen did when flash was bullying him.

the next issue they’re all hanging together, studying, and mj walks in, and they all meet her for the first time.

the first thing mj actually does is address gwen, being perfectly pleasant. then she takes peter away on a date, and gwen gets jealous and takes it out on flash.

peter becomes very smitten with mj.

but then peter cancels their plans on her twice in a row and she doesn’t get mad at all. she just stays chill about it. but she ends up making other plans, and peter sees her and harry out to go to the disco, and peter is an ass.

over the next bit they all hang out together, peter and mj are flirty, gwen is finally letting her hair down a bit and dancing. they’re all becoming pals!

then peter wants gwen again bc peter can’t make up his fkin mind clearly, and gwen is the one to blow him off this time. the good thing is, she’s being nice about mary jane at least! i do like how they are friends in the comics.

peter goes back and forth on gwen and mj for multiple issues, they both clearly like him back. nothing too groundbreaking to share as of yet. i’m just thankful for mj and gwen’s friendship. i hate how people forget that when pitting the girls against each other.

this is pretty much one of the only times it’s mentioned that gwen is into science tho...

then peter and mj are hanging, and gwen shows up.

gwen says something very interesting in the panel above. peter jokes wondering if mj is ever serious, and gwen says “far more often than she’d like you to suspect, mr. p”. this kind of foreshadows mj’s actual character, how she’s a party girl, flaky, care free, and it’s all a mask. because in reality, she had an awful, abusive home life, and not being serious is how she copes with that. so that was insightful on gwen’s part, or just some forshadowing from the writers.

not much happens for a few issues. then peter and gwen have their first kiss.

then a baddie tries to use mj as a shield, and peter saves her. she’s the first to swing with spidey! and then mj jokes about it and brushes it off because she’s strong af.

then peter and captain stacy got in a kerfuffle and they were fighting, and cap stacy was about to whack peter with his cane, but peter’s spider senses wet off and knocked cap stacy to the ground. gwen ran in and saw it, and got mad at peter.

not much happens for awhile. everyone is so preoccupied with their own problems. peter can’t stop thinking of gwen, she is still mad at him, etc etc.

it’s funny bc the readers were preferring mj at this time despite them trying to make the peter/gwen thing a thing, so stan lee made mj get a god awful, ugly haircut in hopes it would make people like gwen more.

still lots of drama with gwen’s dad, gwen is still not talking to peter, but they both think of each other, mj isn’t in the comics for a bit.

but then gwen’s dad finally tells gwen what happened so then they’re all good again.

so then they’re good. they’re dating again. but this happens lmao

then gwen gets mad at him later on for constantly disappearing. while gwen does get mad too often, i agree with her on this because peter is very flaky (for good reason, but she doesn’t know that).

mary jane is MIA from the comics for a long time and the non spidey scenes normally just consist of gwen and peter being good for a little bit and then inevitably fighting again over something dumb.

more of just contant on n off again, happy n pissed off at each other, etc etc, i think the writers were out of ideas lol. THEN 17 FREAKING ISSUES LATER MJ FINALLY RETURNS. with better hair.

then peter and gwen are really good and in love, then gwen and peter get hit by a truck, peter doesn’t visit gwen in the hospital till later cause of spidey stuff, gwen gets mad at him for it. LOTS OF BACK AND FORTH GOD DAMN.

then it finally got enough and in a frenzy peter tells everyone he’s spider-man, and gwen does not take the news well.

but then at the end of the issue he says he had the flu and didn’t mean what he said and gwen was happy again.

but then peter was with cap stacy when he died, and people blamed spider-man for captain stacy’s dead.

resulting in gwen hating spider-man because she blamed him for her father’s death.

then gwen says she’s gonna move to london to live w/ her uncle. and peter doesn’t want her to go. and they say i love you and it’s sweet, but then she mentions how she hates peter’s other half again.

gwen goes to london and they breakup.

all throughout the comic there’s always little things like this where it’s very clear mj is into peter. she never even remotely talks about spider-man, it’s always about peter.

but gwen is still peter’s high school sweetheart and he still loves her and thinks about her, and she him.

so she comes back to new york.

then they’re in looooove. but there’s not much content of them being together n happy for the next few issues, it’s mainly just spidey fighting bad guys. then when she does come back peter is rude n lies to her and then gwen is sad again.

THEN THEY’RE FINE AGAIN GJDSKSGJDKG I CAN’T KEEP TRACK

okay you guys it honestly goes back and forth so much. they’re good, then they’re awful, they’re good, then they’re awful. so i’m not going to be providing those panels anymore because i think you get the idea that it’s pretty unstable.

she does stick up for peter though, which is pretty awesome.

but then

the time has come

where gwen dies

and then one of the most iconic peter/mj moments happen. peter lashes out at mj because he’s broken about gwen’s death, but despite mj being flighty due to her abusive upbringing, she sticks around anyways.

they originally had her rushing over at the end to hug him, but instead changed it to her just closing the door because that held more weight.

she’s there for him.

mj sticks up for peter and harry, but she’s treated like shit by yet another man.

and here you can see very well how mj really wants to be there for peter, but then her guard is up because all she knows is men treating her like trash. and to prevent anyone getting close to her so they can hurt her, she pushes them away and doesn’t let them in.

but the death of gwen do make them grow and look after each other, getting closer to each other for wanting to be there for each other.

gwen’s death still heavily on peter’s mind, though.

the thing i don’t get about the whole ‘mj only loved spider-man not peter parker’ argument is that MJ WAS SO FUCKIN OBVIOUS ABOUT HER INFATUATION WITH PETER ALL THE TIME AND NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT SPIDER-MAN EVER?

but i love these panels below so, so much. really shows how hard it is for mary jane to let people in/admit her feelings. but it’s very clear she does love him, but peter isn’t emotionally available yet.

except despite them both being stubborn about their feelings, they grow closer and closer.

but peter’s still haunted by gwen.

but then peter and mj have their first kiss, and it changes everything forever.

gwen comes back as a clone, and then this happens.

but then after they depart, this immediately happens, and this has been confirmed that mj and peter solidified their relationship ~*by doin it*~ and it was peter’s first time.

and then thinking of her gives him the strength to fight back.

and then their relationship grows more and more very beautifully, mj letting peter in, peter letting her in. mj finally tells peter she knows he’s spider-man, so she’s the only one who understand that part of his life.
