Character Design Evolution of Cats: Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer

So, I use the Cats wiki to collect photos for these things and it’s hard to find photos of one of these two without the other, so they get to be in the same entry.

1981: Jerrie looks like he’s in a very strange boyband. Teazer looks like a cheerleader for a school with a very strange choice of school colors. But, they both look human and strange.

1982: This is the era where they were trash puppets possessed by Cryptid Misto.

1998: Two very silly cats. They describe themselves as clowns and comedians and they are indeed very silly. They’re also very cute.

2016: So, the previous Terrie Jeazer combos that weren’t trash puppets were in the same Iconic Pose. 2016 redid the choreography, so maybe that’s why I couldn’t find a picture in that pose. They look like they’re having a good time. Also, with every single one of these (not counting the puppets), the tiger stripes get crazier.

2019: I have a surprising amount to say.

These designs are pretty good by 2019 standards, tbh, but there are a few things that bug me. First, it was actually hard to find pictures of the two together. For the plays, it was hard to find separate pictures. That’s a sign that something went wrong with how the characters were written, directed, and/or shot. These two are supposed to be together almost all the time.

Also, here’s a consequence of realistic cat designs: The play costumes are exaggerated, so most of the cats don’t resemble and variety of real cat. If they vaguely look like a thing, well, it’s vague. Jerrie and Teazer look more like tigers than house cats in the plays tbh. But, the movie had to make them look more like real cats with realistic color schemes. If they’re going to insist on being realistic, I’m going to nitpick when they seem to be failing:

I’m pretty sure Jerrie and Teazer are calico cats in this movie. Male calicos are extremely rare, so it’s really odd that Mungojerrie just sort of exists. Almost no one would actually give a shit about this, but it makes me want to headcanon about what life for a male calico would be like in the world of cats. Perhaps cats would see coat patterns that are usually only seen in queens as feminine and that’s why Jerrie is so easily confused with his sister.

Maybe 2019 Jerrie is trans. The twins work for Macavity because he used his magic to make afab Jerrie biologically male in exchange for the two working for him. Changing his sex didn’t change his coat color. I’m cis, so I can’t make good trans headcanons, but this literally just occurred to me. Do with this what you will

New Blog...Theme? Pages? Everything?

Hello folks, the grand event is finally here! As some of you have already noted, I have been fiddling around a lot with basically everything on this blog for the past couple of days, and I’m happy to announce that the changes are finally finished! *breathes heavy sigh of relief*

There’s a lot that I’ve updated, because basically I hadn’t updated anything in a really long time, and some of it was out of date/ineffective. Also some of it I just decided needed a change. So here’s the updates:

I do in fact have a different profile picture, you’re not going crazy. Also my header is now an Ovidi Montllor quote (unfortunately the most Basic one but there’s a reason why it’s everywhere I guess) because I think my old header was a bit out of date

I have completely updated my desktop theme. It may have the color scheme of a public television kid’s TV show, but it is hopefully more streamlined and displays my posts better. You’ll also notice that if the post is about a specific language, there’s a flag next to the post (I did my best to find flags that correctly aligned with the languages, mostly using a random list on Wikipedia, although I couldn’t find a good one for Kerala) (should have used the Communist Party flag tbh). And it also shows the an icon for the category of the post, which are generally not very intuitive but also I made a key in....

....the new Tags page, which is kind of janky because Tumblr flaked on me at the last second. (This page lists flags next to languages and icons next to categories if you’re confused.) I redid all my tags, so now you can find language-specific music or vocabulary or whatever you want. I was a bit fickle in my tagging so some things may make no sense but for the most part I think it will help you find things a bit more efficiently. And the new tag formats are “language:topic” (or “language:general” for all posts related to a certain language)

I also added an FAQs which is not super helpful but if you have things you want me to add I’d be glad to! (Also lmk if you want me to add/take away your blog from that one question, I figured you guys were active and wouldn’t mind)

Also, very importantly, the desktop version now has 4 language options – Catalan, Welsh, Basque, and English – , so you can change up what language it shows up in! (It’s currently just on the main page, none of the other pages are translated yet but I might try to translate them at some point). It either uses your browser language or you can hover over the little globe in the top right corner and select the language you want. Let me know if you have corrections for the languages that are there right now because they were honestly kind of a rough draft, and also let me know if you’d be interested in translating into another language! This is one of the things I’m most happy with, I hope you guys like it and use it ^-^

Aaaaaand that’s it folks! Let me know if you spot any mistakes/corrections/bugs in the theme/etc and I’ll fix them, but other than that, I hope you guys like the shiny new guillemelgat :)

Overview - 1.1 Update Post

Since the 1.1 update is almost here, why not do an overview post looking at the most prominent changes? This isn’t a full changelog. That will come later.

Editor improvements

Added the ability to rename rooms/worlds/packs.

New item palette icons.

Undo functionality.

Added optional falling void. No more infinite drops into the abyss (enabled on new rooms by default).

Lock-on guides for shape points.

Improved the editor guide and added more info to it.

Instead of having to type the name of a room or world, doors now just have a dropdown menu with all the available destinations.

Improved pipe editing.

Better recovery for corrupted packs.

Tons of editor related bug fixes.

Mobile editor improvements

Separate editing modes (create, duplicate, delete).

Improved camera touch control reliability.

Pack sharing improvements

Redid the pack list UI and the pack room select UI.

Packs can now have a custom preview image that’s embedded in the pack file.

Added a pack progression check so that creators can make sure the progression of the pack follows the intended way.

This is just the major editor related stuff. There’s also a healthy mix of performance improvements and non-editor bug fixes in there too. I’ve even gone so far as to fix some out-of-bounds-things in certain rooms! I know. Quite extravagant.

The plan is to start rollout of the update next week. That’s also when the changelog will get posted!
