#i have some questions but i respect a concise story that doesn't give it all away
Hi Kerry, here are some Nice Ask Weeks questions for you!!
1. What about TK’s character interested you the most in exploring his backstory, and what made you decide to explore what it would have been like had he had a little sister?☺️
2. If we were to get a flashback in s5 to a point in TK’s life, at what age would you prefer the flashback to be set?
3. What about the show made you join the fandom and is this the first fandom you’ve been in?:)
I wish you a wonderful weekend🌼☺️🌼☺️
Hi Mar! 😍💝
Oh my.... first off, I want to apologize for how unhinged the answer to this question might get and also in advance if I give you a bunch of information you didn't want- The biggest reason is the cliche reason of write the fic you yourself would want to read. I came into the LS fandom when season three had just aired, and I adored TK and Owen's relationship in the first season, and the third season did this SO dirty - like there were literally so many times they could have, should have included a scene for them and just didn't- and because of this/the Gwyn stuff, when I went looking for sweet Strand family feels fic, if it didn't have a publication date of 2020, was some version of, "Gwyn is the ONLY parent TK has ever known and Owen was not there for TK once, IN HIS LIFE, they were basically STRANGERS the day TK didn't come to work and Owen clocked that as something being wrong - and I respect everyone's right to write whatever fic they want. I would never tell any of those writers I didn't agree with them, because they had their opinion and I had mine (also I'm sorry I make way too many references, please throw something at me) but in the show The Good Wife, there's a judge who makes every lawyer preface their statements with "in my opinion" and I was like is that a nifty idea! Because I'm not going to say my take on their relationship is THE right one because it's just how I see it. Before I started my long fic I was just writing cute Strand family stories that are shorter because I didn't find those, so I wrote them. Also (and there is a very long, unhinged post that I don't think I'll ever be brave enough to write about how much it grinds my gears they killed Gwyn off) but I truly hate that they killed her off, I don't think it was the right decision or that it has served TK's character arc, and also, I think Gwyn and Owen are such strong characters and they both love their family so fiercely. Which brings us to the cliched reasons - the things of write what you know and only you could write this fic this way, I was like pfft so made up, and then I spent a year writing a fic over 200,000 words with no end in sight about children of divorce who felt very loved by their parents... and realized that yes, this was written by a child of divorce who felt very loved by her parents. Like in the show, I was also seven when my parents divorced (albeit for a much, much more cliched of a reason) and something that I really strongly see and relate to is that despite what has happened, TK loves and has always felt loved by his parents, and has never had to question that. It doesn't mean they haven't let him down and it doesn't mean that everything's perfect- it's like an early episode of Scrubs where their parents all visit and Dr. Cox tells JD, "Every one of our parents does considerable emotional damage". This is very true, and (I swear I'm trying to be concise and just failing) and I know that so many people's parents fail their kids in this respect and they don't get to have that relationship, but if you do have that bond that the Strands do and that love is never questioned (especially as TK has stated his parents were there for him any time he relapsed), then you look past the times they didn't measure up because they mean so much to you; and I really see that in TK's relationships with both his parents. And TK is just so sweet and so caring and if there are too many characters on TV that are an only child I will be like .... but what if they were a big brother/sister? (Me watching the first three years of teen wolf: why do none of them have brothers and sisters lol) Also because (this probable doesn't come as a surprise given that it's 50 chapters deep lol) writing TK as a big brother is really, really fun for me - because he would be the kid who was so excited his mom was having a baby and wanted to help as much as he could and tell his whole class it's his baby - TK Strand is a character that is very fun to write at any age
I would love to see a flashback to the beginning of his relationship with Alex; just because I'm so curious about what it was about Alex that made TK want to propose, (this would also be hard because it would be so different from his relationship with Carlos, but it's a very curious time to me)
It's the first fandom I've been in like this; probably yes, cause I don't think any other fandoms (like Teen Wolf) I was actively a part of like wrote for it- I did not expect to love this show this much - I'm a big parks and rec/west wing/outsiders fan and was like Rob Lowe as a dad- well sure- and then by the time the title card aired I was like "WHAT IS THIS SHOW" like it still amazes me how fleshed out almost every character is in the pilot/first season. Like - I hadn't written anything for 13 years before I started watching LS- but the characters they provided us with were too good to ignore
Thank you for the ask 🥰- and sorry I ramble too much 🫣🫣

AGI
I got the privilege to go to AGI. It was such an incredible event to go to, I gained a wealth of knowledge. here are some snippets of what i learned that can be applied to life and design!
Taku Satoh
"Hodo Hodo" means just enough, having simplicity and special consideration. About knowing when to stop, not overdoing it to let other elements shine. Taku was one of my favourite speakers he was concise and to the point and I loved this line above.
Astrid Stavro
keep learning by asking questions and being curious. Don't take the money but do what you love. Challenges are opportunities in disguise. Mistakes lead to unexpected places. Never stop learning. Do work that's true to your heart, embrace the uncertainty, and leap before you look. Curiosity is the engine and doubt is the catalyst.
' if you feel safe in the area your working your not working in the right area. Always go a little bit further in the water than you feel your capable of being in. Go a little bit out of your depth and when you don't feel your feet are quite touching the bottom your just about in the place to do something exciting'
Irene Pereyra
Doing things different is better than doing the same. Sell something new make it familiar, sell something familiar make it surprising. Its important to spend time on projects you love as this will continue the passion ( set aside 10% to do your fun things).
Henrik Kubel
Have a very clear brief
Paul Garbett
Create and bring something into existence, we create what we observe. Pay intention without paying attention. creativity is connecting ideas and then connecting with people.
Dean Poole
He makes meaning of every single detail and connects it with his customers. Design can just be about people and place a way to sell stories rather than sell. don't overthink design just do it.
Ahn sang Soo
Create joy in other peoples lives through design. Have a hungry spirit, thinking hands and human enhancement. Creativity stems from our heads and technology takes away. We often hold our head in high regard and despise the body but we need to respect the boy in the creative process. Play with creativity that comes from pleasure impulse.
Pauler Scher
Create seasons and series instead of individual work- create a system out of things that seem iratic. Create a design that's fast, loose, dangerous and fun! For everything you do create systems and brand manuals. Find something you like and take the opportunity and go for it.
Stefan Siegmeister FAVOURITE SPEAKER
A lot of his work comes from living in Rome and having dinners with other artists. As a communication designer, you must be aware of what's going on in the world. Look at the problems this world has of doom and gloom and do something to help. Every positive outcome will have negative side effects and we have to work on them this is just a reality. Every idea has a dozen to make a series. It doesn't matter if you are an artist or designer it matters if you speak and communicate - he gives deep reasoning behind his work and wants to connect with people. He uses random things he's passionate about such as coffee ( he has 13 cups a day). His slogan and mission statement is 'Now is better' Look back and see how far you've grown and how far we have grown as a world. With things that could be a big obstacle, he uses it to his advantage. He encourages art to be a conversation starter. For people who cannot afford art, he created a giant poster notepad and they could rip it off and take one home for free. He isn't out to get but to give back and make the world a better place. 90% of people 200 years ago lived in extreme poverty look where we are today, always look at the glass half full, and look at the long-term picture - it's about your perspective. The world can be improved. Now is better.
Lars Muller
Ensure consistency and structure in your work with grids, books are objects so consider all aspects such as size, weight, and texture. I loved this quote ' White is the colour of imagination, everything and nothing, a place to draw inspiration from and start afresh'. Think outside the box and look at other materials you wouldn't usually consider (concrete-covered book). Don't be afraid of colour.
Ya-Leng Yu
If you ditch tradition or history you can't relate but if you cling young people can't embrace it. The new encompasses the old. Use aspects of the product (roof shape) as inspiration to create a contemporary approach to relate and connect to history in a new way. Collaboration is at the heart of design.
Panel
have a cretain amount of time to do your passion projects and play (15% is good! - as a student it should be 100%). Designers don't retire. Do projects that make you look at the world different.
Kenya Hara
make things unknown and think outside of the box. Have the art of simplicity. Good design includes function and laughter. Respect the nature and land in your work.
Stanely Wong
it's not about exhibitions or achievements, it's about the journey and the relationship of pen to paper, time and existence. Ask 'who am I?' 'What is my image?'. He is a Buddhist and a lot of what he does stems from this but he is not invasive with it. He works on projects aligning with his values, culture and spirit. Every project he creates there is a key value at play. He encourages to make a poster a week and make a personal project 80/20 rule. He tries something new when he enters a new season of life. his seasons are based on what he learns. Passionately curious creativity is values and time and your past.
Ariane Spanier
Confront the unknowns head-on, and embrace it it is our job. There are known knowns, known unknowns, unknown knowns and unknown unknowns. make decisions, start with what you have or you'll run out of time. Try for impact. Quote I love ' Have the love for drawing first, it is the first language, typography is a drawing". Create the space to play and the result for people to enjoy themselves its awesome if you can make a story out of it. People love drawing and feel connected - involve people for connection. Uncertainty can open the crack in the wall which you can emerge. use the uncomfortable feeling as a compass - leave the last known behind you and find the new unknown.

Lift Every Voice: Why Black Artists Collectives Are important
Cincinnati Black Theatre Artists Collective Celebrate a Voice Often Unheard and Give Us One Simple Challenge.
By Ricky and Dana Young-Howze
Cincinnati, Ohio
Hi it's Ricky this week. Last week Dana took the lead because they have a personal vested interest in the work of Black Theatre Artists and joining the movement. Today I'm going to tell you about my personal vested interest in being an ally.
Tumblr media
There's something about this specific group of pieces, beautifully acted by Jeshaun Jackson and Torie Wiggins that spoke to me as an ally. It may have also been because of the forward given by Black Icon Dr. Daryl Harris who, up until this point, had been a big source of inspiration in my African American Expressive Culture Class studying many of his shows. So this was a show that came full circle for me back to college. (I won't tell you how many years ago.)
It doesn't take a lot of looking around to find out this system is rigged against Black People. It also takes nothing to know that Black Lives Matter. But it took a hot second for me to realize that Modern American Theatre is a White Space. It started with directors I respected telling me they couldn't find enough Black Actors to make it feasible to do plays by Black Playwrights. It grew when I heard my Black Colleagues talk about auditions they wouldn't go into because they knew the kind of “Aunt Jemima” roles they would get cast in. But it took seeing this same culture happen in multiple states wherever I went that made me know that this was a national problem.
Tumblr media
But this is the first year that I've seen a movement that is giving us the glimmer of hope at a real possibility of change to this system. And I'm standing up with these artists, my colleagues, to join the fight. And I'm starting off by telling you about this group of Black Artists endeavoring to take the world by storm.
You know the saying that goes “From your mouth to God's ears?” Well these Black Theatre Artists are giving us a word from something much deeper, you might say Gaia, Dionysus, some unknown Goddess of Theatre, crying out for real change and a disruption of an industry that frequently refuses to give them space.
Tumblr media
Or maybe they're all individuals speaking their own truth to power and joining a larger movement trying to create their own change, honor their own spaces, and lift up their own voices. And important to their mission is a very simple directive that they place on every white theatre artist’s and spectator’s doorstep. Call it a “come to Jesus” meeting.
I have never seen such an academically grounded excursion into Black Culture and Arts. Using the worldwide stage of Facebook they stage an incursion directly into our eyes and ears. Their directive is simple: listen, make space, and amplify. As white people this is not our space. All they're asking is for you to make space for them in your life for ten minutes a week. Listen to them and internalize their story and their art. Next it is our job to love and lift them up. Share them with friends and amplify their voice and message. Then start to question why you haven't seen these plays before. Why haven't you heard of the problems Black Artists face? Why doesn't modern theatre have space for them? And why have you never questioned it?
Tumblr media
It's almost soothing to know that they're coming into our house every week. Almost like friends are coming over. Their presentation is slick and grounded. This weekly series is condensed, clear, concise, artfully performed and expertly explained. There is no excuse for you not to give them ten minutes of your time and a shout out to your friends.
You can catch the Cincinnati Black Theatre Artists Collective’s weekly series “For Us By Us” and any other announcements on their Facebook page. Please like and share the great work of these artists. And of course tell us what you think about it on our social media.
