blending gifs tutorial

hi! first of all, thank you so much🥺 i spent a lot of time and energy on that set so i really appreciate it<3

secondly, of course!! i’m the worst at explaining things, so bear with me and feel free to ask if anything is unclear and/or you need more explaining :)

let’s go!

PART ONE

okay so first, i pick my clips (tip: make sure the “main” one has as little movement as possible, otherwise it’s gonna make things way more difficult. also, choosing clips that have matching colors helps A LOT). i import them into photoshop and do the usual, which is sharpening and coloring. if the two gifs don’t have the same amount of frames, delete some from the longer one so that they do, but i’m sure everyone knew this already. so now we have these:

(in this case i added a layer set to soft light and with a very soft brush painted around julie using a purple color so that it matched a little bit better, you might need to do this depending on the scene)

then i copy the frames of the second gif and paste them over the first one and immediately group them and set the group to screen, like this:

next, i lower the opacity and hit cmd+t (or ctrl+t for windows users) so that i can move the second gif around and still see the other one that’s lying below and i can decide where to put it. when i’m done doing this, i add a mask to the group (aka the second gif) and with a very soft brush set to black i start deleting the parts that i don’t want to show up (basically everything over julie). in this case i did leave some (like, ever so slightly) over her hair because i felt like it made the blending more seamless, but it very much depends on the scene and of course personal preference! now you should have something like this:

if this is what you want, you can stop reading! but i added a few more steps in my set which i’ll explain now :)

PART TWO

open the group where you have your second gif’s layers and on top of everything, add a gradient layer (do not choose which gradient/the colors yet! i mean of course you can but i’ll explain in a second what i did in mine) and set it to hard light.

choosing the gradient colors:

now’s the part i’m gonna have the most trouble explaining so again, just bear with me.

the angle of the gradient is really important in this case: i always set mine horizontally (so around 0° or 180°, even if not perfectly at those angles, if it makes sense), with the darkest color on the same side of the first gif (for example, in this case julie is on the right, so the darkest color of my gradient will be on the right and the lightest on the left). for the actual colors, i use the color picker to select the darkest color and i pick from the background of the first gif (sometimes you’re gonna have to mess around a little to find the perfect color but don’t move away too much or it’s gonna become messy, in my experience at least). for this gif, i picked from around here:

for the lightest color (which i already did in the screenshot above) i usually use the color picker again and pick a color that’s popping in the first gif, in this case from julie’s dress (if there is no popping color it’s okay! you can just move around the color board and find the one you like best - of course you have to remain within the shade you want to use!). just mess around with these shades until you get your desired result.

and voilà, you’re done!

sometimes the colors in the second gif (the blended one) do not match at all what you’re trying to do and that can be a pain in the ass. in those cases, it helps me to add a black and white gradient map (set to normal, 100% opacity) underneath the gradient.

i only used this trick on one gif (the other side of hollywood) but nothing prevents you from doing it all the time! it’s gonna look like this:

as you’re gonna realize, it’s much easier than it looks, all you gotta do is practice and mess a lil bit around with the colors until you get the perfect result.

Suh dudes. Long time, no post. As I’m sure you’re all well aware (per the Discord server and other posts on this blog), I am hella behind on posting events! And other things! Yikes! A few things re: that.

Thank you kindly for your patience and encouragement during this crazy quarantine/essential work whiplash going on. It makes me so unbelievably happy to be surrounded by people who are here because they care not only about their roles and the story they are telling, but the peers they are telling that story alongside. Y’all are are good eggs, and I can and will never be able to say it enough.

With that in mind, these are still scary times for many, many reasons, so if anyone needs a hiatus or a break or a reset or WHATEVER THE CASE MAY BE, please hit me up! Nothing is important as your health and safety, and especially not a game on the internet. I’m more than happy to be flexible where need be until we can all get back on our feet.

Also on that note: we have been doing this thing for a long time. Almost ten months. That’s a long time!!!!! And when you write in a group for that long of a time, things, as with any other area of life, will change. You’ll learn new things about your fellow writers and your own roles. Your life will contort itself into new shapes you may never have dreamed of. Both IC and OOC, things have changed for all of us since August 2019! Sometimes that’s for the worst, and sometimes that’s for the best. What I’m getting at is this: it’s okay if you have lost muse for any of your roles since picking them up. We’ve all been there. C’est la vie, very unfortunately. So if you are having any doubts or struggles that might cause you to consider dropping a role, or simply reworking them, or anything in between, please don’t be shy. Come chat with me. It’s confidential, I promise. Like I said above, I’ll do whatever I can to help get us all back on our feet.

How I Run my Blog

SPEED: Depends on my muse, and my headspace. If we’re in the middle of a fluff piece and I am in a towering rage due to OOC things you are more likely to see my post some introspective pieces of Angry or Destructive Gabriel. You are likely to see me lean more heavily on the destructive aspects of his enhancements on his body etc. So I can churn out replies in a hella short amount of time if the muse is in a good place and I have the time and space to do so. That said? I am a nurse. I work a full time nursing job and I am searching around for a college to get my Master’s degree.

REPLIES: You don’t have to write me a novel but either give me good body language, come into my DMs and give me a hint of what the muse is feeling and needs out of my muse ( prompting is OKAY for me becuase sometimes I want the RP to go a certain way and it can be kind of a drag if it suddenly 180′s in a direction I wasn’t expecting...), or give me a bit of dialogue or all three so we can keep a flow! Otherwise, Back and forth banter? Cool. But if you ask me to start our rp you are gonna get a hell of a lot of info. Which leads into-

STARTERS: I love to write starters. Sometimes I’m not in the mood BUT typically if you give me time I will happily plot and then throw out a starter. That said? My starters are scene and mood setters. I want you to see what I see and give you ‘space’ to play in a room. I want you to understand the approximate size of the space, objects within it etc. Or at least I want to do my best. If you hit me up in DM I will give you all the breakdown of whatever imagined room/area we are in and what objects are around my muse and details of them.

INBOX: I love to see things in my inbox. I do not mind anons but remember... Gabriel, as unless you specify a reaper verse interaction, is a Black Ops special forces Commander and he will give you replies as befitting depending on what you send or say. Magic Anons I will take at my leisure or not, though I don’t really get any? Boo I say.

SELECTIVITY: Non-mutuals can send asks, and I might do a small interaction with non-mutuals but plotting/further interactions would be reserved for mutuals only. I am selective in some ways, this muse is a pretty specific era muse other then the rare requested Reaper appearance. Which makes my interactions somewhat restrictive. If you can plot something good with me and I feel like our personalities and writing style will mesh I’ll give a mutual follow back and we can get to plotting more! I try not to be but I’m sure to some I’ve come off as snotty and I apologize. The one thing I don’t really ever RP With and its not because of bad writing, or bad muse, but I cannot bring myself to RP with OCs. Unfortunately that is a long personal history of RP and characters that have attacked mine, or muns that have attacked /me/ personally. So I am sorry to all the epic OC’s out there but if you aren’t a canon character I won’t interact with you except in VERY rare cases and that is literally a long debate and very tentative on my part after reading your works, seeing what world you are placed in etc.

WISHLIST: I love you all and if I am following you I want to write with you? HMU even if you just want to chat? That said I often write one shot pieces of Gabriel’s mindset. If you want to know a lot about him as a character and how I think about him as a character you can divine quite a lot out of them. I’d love to really dig into him as a man who suffered as much if not more in some small ways as Jack. Jack often gets a lot of sympathy as Strike Commander, and while Gabriel gets a lot of sympathy as Reaper sometimes I feel like everything he might have had to do, and sacrifice and juggled to make his unknown team work in the Overwatch organization.

HONEST NOTE: I want to write with all of my mutuals. I want you to feel like you can pop into my chat and scream randomly at me and then skitter away. I want to laugh over silly memes and share pictures and shriek about these characters. I want to talk and plot and trade ideas and be friendly. I am not scary, I promise. I’m a tired nurse who writes as a means of emotional and mental outlet.

- DISCLAIMER: This blog is SUPER glitchy for me. Why? Who can say other than this place is a hellsite. I might at some point have to try out moving to a new account depending on how bad it gets. I have a lot of issues with my notifications and follower count, so there might be a very good chance I might miss something or miss you following me, though I do try to check where Tumblr will actually allow me. - I’m on the fence as to whether I’ll include other non-Bioshock related verses. Considering the rpc for the game is nearly non-existent on here, probably be the smarter choice, but currently, it’s a no. Nick’s story is so heavily intertwined with that of the first two Bioshock games, I cant picture his character being in other verses and it having as much impact. This could change in the future or if something is heavily plotted out. Overall if you want to interact, it will have to be within the world of Rapture. But - you are more than welcome to hmu or approach me with something if you have an idea.

- Reblog memes and the like from the source please. My notifications are already wonky

- I will NOT interact with blogs that use youtubers, social media influencers, or anime / drawn characters for their Fcs. Nothing against you, it’s just not my thing.

Memes: -I will try to respond to memes / asks! Mutuals, Non-Mutuals, Anons all welcome. -Please don’t take it personally if I don’t answer your ask, sometimes things just don’t click. -Starter-memes, unless I pm you and discuss otherwise, generally these are for smaller-format threads. Just to balance out my lengths of things and make it easier for me to get something back to you.

Reply lengths: -I’m occasionally prone to writing larger Multi-Para starters. It’s just my nature. I don’t expect you to match it. Please don’t be intimidated. (But also, typically my average reply length tapers off after the starter for a more reaction-based format. -Multi-Para style is my main tendency writing with an average of 2-4 para replies. Shorter semi-para may occur at times, particularly in dash commentary or shitpost threads.

Reply Frequency: -This is not my primary muse, so I will only be checking this blog occasionally. Consider it low-activity. -When my threads start crowding I queue posts to help stagger replies. -Neither length nor reply-speed is an indicator of my interest level in a thread. Some threads are intended to be larger formal threads while others are shorter that I want to remain light for enjoyment. A varied thread diet is best. -Please do not compare my threads against each other. I plan my replies around how I know I’ll best be able to manage my schedule, as well as meshing in with my various RP partners schedules. LOVVEGOOD’S guide to those doodle-y gifs!!

hi hi y’all, under the cut i’ll be explaining how i make my doodle edits, examples of which can be found here. this tutorial will be based on this edit of mine. disclaimer: i’m no pro and this is my first guide, but if anything is unclear you can just message me and i’ll try to help!

step ONE ----- the basics

you first have to find your base pictures, ofc! i use pinterest as i’m completely obsessed with it and usually have a board for whatever thing i’m making an edit for (because i make like 2 new boards a day, lbr). anyway, i usually try to find pictures that have a background that’s a solid colour or one i can easily make a solid colour because i find that best to work with!

now open your pictures in photoshop, crop them to 245 x 300 px or any other dimension you might like. find yourself a good psd! i tend to pick psds that make whites a bit darker so pics with a white background don’t stay white --- otherwise it’d be hard to see the doodles. just mess about with the colouring and do your usual thing until you’re satisfied tbh. then, add your text layer and throw in any text you might like. font, size, etc is all up to you!

step TWO ----- the preparation

now that we’ve got the basics out of the way, let’s move on to the actual doodling. you’ll need the animation window to how up at the bottom, which you can do by toggling it ( window > animation ). then, make sure you have the right tab (animation frames), this you can do by clicking here, so it turns into this:

and then you want to press this lil guy three times. you can also press it more often, depending on the amount of frames you want! i usually go with three, though, but whatever floats your boat yknow! then you’ll have this:

okay coolio! now we’re going to add a few new layers! you’ll need as many as you have frames, so in this case we’ll add three. you’ll want to add these above your psd, as we don’t want our doodles to be psd’d. is that a verb? it is now. i call them doodle 1, doodle 2 and doodle 3 for convenience myself.

step THREE ----- the doodling

you’ll want to set your brush to 1px and white for this (or any other thickness or colour, depends on your taste & vision!) and make sure all your doodle layers are toggled, this so you can easily see where you’ve already drawn.

what you want to doodle is completely up to you & also depends on your picture! i’ll show you guys how you can do the tracing of your image like this gif, how you can highlight text like here and how to do simple & classical doodles like in my golden trio edit.

1. tracing!

this one is very simple and one i usually always do bc it’s simple and makes it look fun & stuff. if you’re brush is all set and all your doodle are toggled, you simply select the doodle 1 layer and start tracing.

it’ll look something like that! then go to doodle 2 and trace the next bit --- don’t make the different lines touch but leave a few px blank. then select doodle 3 and do the same. you simply continue this process until you’ve got everything traced which will mean your edit will look like this:

now make sure your frames have the right doodle layer selected. on frame 1 you want to have doodle 1 toggled, on frame 2 doodle 2, etc. set your frame delay to something between 0.2-0.5seconds and make sure the loop is set on forever and then just hit play! it should move like this:

2. text!

so this one is a tad trickier! what you want to do here is duplicate your base picture three times (or however many frames you want). simply choose the words you want to highlight (i picked feel, fear and anyway) and select your first doodle layer and start tracing the word. i rec a 1px brush for this! your psd will look something like this when done:

that black text on the background isnt v pretty so now we’re going to use those three duplicates we have! select one of them, turn off your psd and use your eyedropper to get the colour of the background. now simply brush over the word so it turns the colour of the background. it’ll look like this:

simply repeat this for the other words but make sure you constantly use a different one of the duplicates. basically every doodle has a corresponding base image. also make sure that each of your frames have the right doodle and base image toggled. idk how to explain this but!! i hope that makes sense? this is basically what my workspace looks like:

3 doodles!

this is by far my fave thing to do?? doodles are just cute lbr. anyway, this one is also p simple! toggle all your doodles and start doodling the thing you want, for example a heart or a star or a lightbulb or whatevs. if you’ve got that done, go to your next doodle layer and sloppily draw the same thing on the sample place, so it ends up moving a bit. then do the same for your next and you’ll have a glorious mess like this:

Reply lengths: -I’m occasionally prone to writing larger Multi-Para starters. It’s just my nature. I don’t expect you to match it. Please don’t be intimidated. (But also, typically my average reply length tapers off after the starter for a more reaction-based format. -Multi-Para style is my main tendency writing with an average of 3-4 para replies. Shorter semi-para may occur at times, particularly in dash commentary or shitpost threads.

Reply Frequency: -Sometimes I’m actively lurking, sometimes I’m not. My levels of muse, and muse for specific threads will vary day to day. I reckon I consider myself medium-activity at present. -When my threads start crowding I queue posts to help stagger replies. -Neither length nor reply-speed is an indicator of my interest level in a thread. Some threads are intended to be larger formal threads while others are shorter that I want to remain light for enjoyment. A varied thread diet is best. -Please do not compare my threads against each other. I plan my replies around how I know I’ll best be able to manage my schedule, as well as meshing in with my various RP partners schedules. Occasionally this means one person may receive a burst of replies in a short space of time. This is usually because we only have a narrow window to mutually be active as they may only be able to reply every few days. It doesn’t mean I’m ignoring others. I’ll get to you, just chill. WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO RP WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING?: Pretty much anything. If you have an idea, hmu. The chances of me saying no are pretty slim.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE? Gany’s immortal so... there’s probably always going to be an age gap. So long as the person is 18+ we’re good, though in his verses where he’s immortal, Gany actually leans more towards people in their 20′s and upwards. But otherwise, we’re good.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?

Kinda. I’m a slut for shipping, but there’s gotta be like... chemistry there. If there isn’t, I can’t do it. I have to be able to picture our muses together for it to work out, I can’t just ship willy-nilly.

DOES ONE HAVE TO ASK TO SHIP WITH YOU? Yes and no. Generally you can just be like ‘OMG I KINDA SHIP THEM??’ and then my response to that will probably give you and idea how i feel about it. You don’t have to specifically be like ‘can we ship?’. But you can do that too. Idk.. I mostly just fall into my ships unexpectedly tbh.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU LIKE TO SHIP? It really depends. Like i said, I’m a slut for ships, but that doesn’t mean I’m out only to ship. I do have a fair few on Gany, which might make some people scoff and look down on me or w/e but it’s a case-by-case thing. I’ve accidentally ended up shipping with gany a lot. But if you look at some of my other characters, I might not ship them much, if at all. I love platonic relationships too.

FINALLY, HOW DOES ONE SHIP WITH YOU? talking to me, mainly. If you look at my blog, you might notice that a fair few of my ships don’t actually have that many threads (or are even actually together yet, in the case of Eros and Cerberus). The reason for that is because a lot of the development has happened in private through chat (usually with a lot of squealing and key mashing on my part). Talking out relationships is really fun, and it means we can jump around the timeline a bit and have threads that take place at various stages of the relationship. it’s one of the best things about shipping imo.
