Anyone here got any experience or beloved resources on growing vegetables and maybe berries? I think I’ve got the basics but there could always be little tips or things that get forgotten in the bigger picture that I missed, so I always like to ask people directly if they’ve got experience, if there’s anything that I should be on the lookout for :D
Details:
-When it comes to construction of it, I’m definitely enlisting my husband, but I’d *like* to be able to manage it primarily on my own after that. Noting that I’m disabled with chronic pain but exactly what can and can’t move can vary greatly because of the nature of my pain. I already know that gardening is kind of a physical pursuit, so if there are tips on gear to reduce impact, I think that may be what I can best ask for :D
-When I say “construction” I mean that I definitely intend to make raised beds. The ground is too heavily packed and there’s lots of rocks cause we’re kinda in the side of a mountain. My understanding is they should be 12 inches deep for best use.
-I think zucchini would be a great start since those things are supposed to grow like crazy and they’re fucking delicious and versatile as fuck so hell yeah zucchini
-We have rabbits, blackbirds, sterlings jays, robins, hummingbirds, mourning doves, neighborhood outdoor cats, and there’s one raven i’ve started seeing just the past 2 months or so. Who do I watch out for!? Is the rabbit a non-issue with raised beds? Are there flowers I could/should plant among the vegetables to prevent these guys from mucking about with them? I have no idea what kind of insect pests I have to worry about with vegetables. I know we have a fuckload of boxelder bugs
-Sub-alpine, US pacific northwest. My backyard only gets truly direct sunlight from about 7am to 11am. After that the sun is in front of the house, and comes in at more of an angle. It’s fully shaded after about 4pm. (Going by about this time of year’s standards). The sun might be one of my greatest concerns, but I think the light will be good enough, if I build further back in the yard instead of closer to the house. That will allow the light to last on it longer before the house fully blocks the sun from the yard.
-Ordering seeds? !! I assume the answer will be a pretty emphatic “yes” but I think it’s still worth it to ask- Should I order seeds even as a beginner? Perhaps especially as one?
-I know we’re already getting late into the year am I too late for something like zucchini though??? Okay, this one I actually just have to look up, I just realized I forgot to research planting and growth times, I was busy looking at garden construction foremost. But I’m gonna leave this here ‘cause this... this is where I’m at with it I guess XDDD
-How big of a garden should I start with!? I was kinda thinking maybe a 4′x2′? Is that gonna turn out to be *huge* or would that be good? Hmmm....
-Garden beds!! Favored construction materials? Concrete blocks? Wood? Untreated wood, right? Might be more maintenance but is way better for soil health, right? If I’m gonna eat this food, I’d like not to put weird wood preserving chemicals into it, rightright??
#misha rambles#gardening#i would definitely love to expand the garden to have things like kitchen herbs and some other stuff too#when i say 'berries' i assume blue- and straw- because those're what i know grows in this climate#uhh with the wood i did glance at a thing that said 'untreated is better for edibles' so i assume that my train of thought on that is accur#ate but i'm just making a loose guess not a particularly well educated one#i think my lot is a quarter acre which would make my yard about half that?#i'm guessing idk i'm not looking at things and i could be off#i would say for space that i can easily and happily turn into garden space is abooouuuutttt#15' x 5'?#actually if i reappropriate the slanted back#since i'm already planning on building *raised planters* i can make use of the slant#then i could get even more space#OH YEAH#i've seen someone in my neighborhood grows pumpkin and corn!!!#........maybe i should get over myself and my anxiety and walk down there and be like#'HI I LIVE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD I LIKE YOUR VEGETABLES CAN YOU TEACH ME'#lmao#...oh and i definitely missed several of the types of birds that hang out in our yard#cause there's more lol#i think one of them is called 'red tipped' or 'red winged' something#it's black with red spots on its wings#and at least one red tailed hawk calls the neighborhood part of its hunting territory#and there's little songbirds that i don't know the names of but like 3 different varieties of those i think#hopefully i'm not just mixing up the boys and girls and juvies tho lol

Witchy Questionnaire
Hello Lovelies! A beautiful Tumblr witch, @vertewitch  tagged me in this post, so I decided to keep it going. I’m Kristen, a secular kitchen or cottage witch. While most of my time is spent in the kitchen, I’m also an avid gardener and everything I do revolves around my home. Many people may suspect that this aligns me with TradFem ideology, but that is not the case. If you are a tradfem, I will not tell you to get off my blog, but I will have you understand that I am not one of you, although I used to be. I am an atheist, and a secular humanist, and my practice revolves around personal enjoyment and practical living. My practice (what some would consider witchcraft, others may not), began as a suggestion from my therapist to invent helpful rituals for myself as a replacement to the aspects of religion that I missed.
The planet is very important to me on a personal and practical level, which is why my content is so heavily focused on seasonal and sustainable living. I create content on my website/blog Boiled Wheat Blog (boiledwheat.com), and on Youtube, and I share most of it here on Tumblr. I’m a small-scale professional food photographer, so when I’ve got lots of clients, I don’t make as much online content, but it is what I love to do with any extra time I have.
I absolutely love it when I get questions and messages from people, so if you have any questions, feel free to DM me!
1. what kind of witch are you?
I’m probably most accurately described as a kitchen witch. But cottage witchcraft, hearth witchcraft, and green witchcraft are also applicable. I am not a Wiccan, and I have no religion or even spirituality (depending on your definition), so that may “disqualify” me from witchcraft to some. But my favorite thing about being a witch is that it essentially means whatever you want it to mean!
2. how did you discover your path?
The natural and the whimsical were always alluring to me growing up. Like many children, I had a vivid imagination, and big dreams that didn’t quite fit into the faith that I was expected to uphold. As an adult, I painfully left my childhood religion and sought therapy to deal with some of the repercussions of my years spent in the faith. My therapist suggested that I add some rituals to my life that wouldn’t be necessarily spiritual in nature, but would healthily replace those aspects of religion that I missed. I began with the kitchen, creating mantras for myself to meditate and practice mindfulness while cooking, and then expanded outwards, to each part of my home. I lack belief in the supernatural, and I have no “faith” in the religious sense. But I do have mantras, meditations, rituals, and practices that help my mental and physical health, as well as organize and beautify my life.
3. how long have you been practicing?
I suppose I’ve been doing some sorts of practicing since childhood, but consciously, since I was 19.
4. what path/tradition do you follow?
I suppose there are bits and pieces of other’s paths in my own, but most of what I practice is invented by myself.
5. are you solitary or do you have a coven?
I am solitary for now. I have found covens or groups to be too close to some of the aspects of organized religion that I dislike most, but that could be just because I haven’t found the right people yet.
7. do/would you teach and practice witchcraft to your children?
I plan to adopt children someday, and yes, sort of. I plan to teach them the principles of mindfulness, and the importance of caring for the planet. But I would want them to create a path unique to themselves.
8. do you have a patron/matron deity?
I have no deities, but I do like researching them from a fascination standpoint.
9. favorite pantheon?
It would have to be Norse. I know that a lot of Norse mythology has been co-opted by individuals that I would never want to associate myself with, but the stories and gods themselves are extremely fun and interesting.
10. favorite goddess?
Hel, for sure. I don’t see her as a “villain” or “bad” goddess, she’s just a part of the life cycle.
11. favorite god?
Thor. Love that big oaf.
12. your sun sign?
I had to look these up, since I know next to nothing of astrology. But my sun sign is Libra and my moon sign is…
13. your moon sign?
Capricorn
15. thoughts on the afterlife?
I lack a belief in the afterlife, which is different from “believing that there is no afterlife”. I do not know what will happen when I die, and I’m okay with that.
17. are you out of the broom closet? if so, how do your friends/family feel about your path?
I suppose? Yes and no. Since my practice isn’t religious or spiritual, I never felt the need to come out about it… but that being said, I never formally came out about my sexuality either, so maybe that’s just not something that’s important to me? Haha, when I told my husband I was pansexual, it was more of just an “fyi, I also think women can be hot sometimes. Also nonbinary people.” And he was like, “lol cool” and that was that.
19. do you have an altar?
Kind of. I consider a few areas of my home to be a sort of altar.
20. what’s a spell that you’ve done?
I’ll equate my mantras and meditations to spells for the sake of this question. This morning, like every morning, I spoke through my intentions of creating a beautiful and healing day while I made my tea.
22. favorite pagan holiday that you celebrate?
Beltane! Where I live, that’s really the beginning of spring, and it’s when I put the majority of my seedlings out into the garden. 😊
26. favorite witch websites?
Hmmmm…. To be honest, I don’t really follow many witchy websites. But I do love the blogs: Olive Trees + Moon, Wooden Spoon Herbs Journal, Local Milk Blog, Stems and Forks, First We Eat, and Twigg Studios
29. favorite season?
Late Summer/Fall. Nothing is more fulfilling than a good harvest for me. And I love the preparations for the slow life of winter.
30. favorite herb?
Calendula
31. favorite gem?
It’s not really a gem, just a semiprecious stone, but carnelian.
38. your grimoire.
Tumblr media
It’s a simple leatherbound book that I picked up from a market stand in Edinburgh. It’s where I jot down recipe notes, to do lists, and random doodles. The pages are thick enough to hold lots of ink, even a little paint, so it works for the mixed media that I use in it, as well as the abuse it takes from having it open in the kitchen while I’m cooking.
39. your tarot deck(s) (or one you want).
I’ve never gotten into tarot, but I do see gorgeous decks every once in a while that make me want to give it a shot!
Thanks for the tag! @vertewitch, this was fun! :)

What Lauren Conrad Can’t Live Without
Tumblr media
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hairspray and the electric toothbrush. We asked Lauren Conrad — whose brand, Lauren Conrad Beauty, launched this fall and just expanded to skin care — about the coffee maker, hair clip, and wine she can’t live without.

Kristin Ess Full Size French Pin Set $12
I’ve worked with Kristin since I was 20 — she’s amazing and her whole line is literally the only thing I use on my hair: her shampoo, conditioner, stylers, everything. My hair is pretty thick. After my first pregnancy, it all fell out. I’ve been able to hang on to a lot of it this time around, but it still has changed a lot. Kristin explained to me that the texture of your hair changes every seven years and it changes during pregnancy. So mine has become a bit thicker — I have a lot more hair than I did before — with more of a natural wave to it. I recently grew it long enough to really do a top knot again, and this French pin makes that so easy. It doesn’t cause breakage like an elastic can. I use it every single day. Even if I’m not wearing my hair up, when I get home at the end of a day, I twist it up when I walk in the door because I live with a one-year-old hair puller. I don’t even look in a mirror to do it.

Kinto 4 Cup Brewer Stand Set $188
The first thing I do every morning is make coffee at around 6:30. Years ago I had a Keurig in my kitchen, and when one of my husband’s best friends stayed with us, he very kindly said to me, “If I sent you more ecofriendly ideas for coffee, would you be open to them?” He got me thinking. The next weekend we were going up the coast for a wedding and we stopped in this small boutique, where I saw this little coffee maker. I was like, “Oh, this is so beautiful.” It doesn’t require anything, including filters. I got it and have used it ever since. There’s a whole process to it: I grind my own coffee, and in order to use this, you need a more coarsely ground coffee. Then I pour a bit of boiling water over it, let the coffee bloom for a minute, then pour the rest in and watch it make my coffee. It’s definitely more involved than a regular coffee maker or a Keurig, but I actually think it makes a nicer cup. It looks better on your counter, too, and best of all, it’s a little nicer to the Earth. Mine has held up for a few years. We did have to replace one piece because my husband dropped it while washing it, but other than that, it has really lasted.

Kirkland Signature Organic Virgin Coconut Oil $16
I love this one from Costco because it’s a really good value. I do use it to cook, but I mainly use it for baths. At the end of the day, after we put the boys down, I try to take a 20-minute bath. It’s my end-of-the-day thing — I usually have a glass of wine in there, too. And I always put a bit of coconut oil in the bath while it’s running. The last thing I want to do is apply moisturizer after a bath because I’m so relaxed and tired, so putting coconut oil in there keeps my skin nice and hydrated.

Health-Ade Pink Lady Apple Kombucha (6-Pack) $30
Instead of having a coffee in the afternoon, I’ve switched to having kombucha. It’s better for digestion and whatnot. I have a fridge stocked with kombucha, that’s how much I drink it. I treat kombucha almost like I would beer — I have my go-tos, but I like trying different ones, and I always come back to my favorites. This is one of them. I found it at my local grocery store. It’s sort of a middle-of-the-road one in terms of sweetness, for when I don’t want anything too sugary. It’s tasty. If I don’t want to try something new, I go for this because I know I’ll enjoy it.

Philips Avance XL Air Fryer $300
I mainly use it to reheat things. For example, if I’m making a batch of waffles, I’ll freeze the extras, then pop one in when I want it. The air fryer defrosts and crisps it up. It also brings leftover fries back to life, which is honestly enough of a reason to own one. This model is the newer version of mine, because when I went to look up mine, I only found used ones on eBay. I guess I’ve really had it for a minute. But mine is still working well, I don’t have a reason to replace it. I got it about two years ago when I was pregnant. Some woman at a talk about how to healthily feed small children said we all needed to get an air fryer because it makes things so easy. Recently I did a Zoom wine date with one of my good friends and she texted me that she was running late; she was like, “I just finally unwrapped my air fryer from Christmas.” I responded with a short novel about my air fryer, outlining everything she needs to do and try. I’m obsessed with it.

Sweet Laurel: Recipes for Whole Food, Grain-Free Desserts $28 now 25% off $21
Our whole family is dairy-free. We have been for years. My oldest son is actually lactose-intolerant, but we’ve all struggled with dairy, so we just cut it out of our diet. Cutting out dairy is pretty easy, but it becomes a challenge with baking. Sweet Laurel’s recipes are all dairy-free; she’s also grain-free, so it’s all almond flour. The main ingredients she uses are almond flour, maple syrup, and Himalayan salt. All of her recipes are really easy, too — I pull out cookbooks for dessert a lot, but sometimes recipes have so many steps that I get overwhelmed. The last thing I made from here was a strawberry cake for my son’s birthday. I handed him the book, told him to pick what he wanted, and he chose that. It was dyed pink with beets. You don’t taste them, they just made the whole cake pink.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Full Strength Exfoliating Mask $48
I love a mask that gives me instant results. I don’t have very sensitive skin, but when I take this off, my face is bright red. It does burn a little, but I don’t mind. I really feel like it’s working. I only use it once a week — I do it at night and the next morning I wake up and my skin feels great. It’s a nice refresher and takes away that dull feeling I can get. I’m trying to do as much as I can at home — I haven’t been able to get facials or see any specialist — and this is the closest I’ve gotten so far to instant results.

Eden Brothers Organic Roma Tomato Seeds $4
We started gardening this year as a way to pass the time. I’ve gotten really into it. I mean, it’s definitely taking over our yard, which is pretty small, but it’s really fun and strangely rewarding. When I went to buy seeds, Eden Brothers had the best selection. We’re growing green beans, tomatillos, raspberries, blackberries, onions, lots of tomatoes — cherry, heirloom, and Roma tomatoes — corn, and pumpkins. Oh, and lots of herbs and stuff, too. We harvested our first corn not long ago. It was weird. The flavor was good, but I don’t know, I’m still learning. I think it maybe was overwatered. I thought gardening would be simple — it’s not, but it has been a really fun hobby. I’m sure I’ll get better with time. My 3-year-old son goes out with me every morning to check the garden. He’s way more inclined to eat something off the vine than he is off a dinner plate. And I love that he gets to see where food comes from at a young age.

Avaline White Blend $20
When I heard about this wine, I was really curious. Katherine Power, one of the founders, is always coming out with different brands and she always does such a nice job with her launches. I don’t like when wine is too sweet or fruity, and I prefer organic wine — if it isn’t organic, I tend to get a headache. This one tastes amazing and has beautiful packaging. I like their white wine best; I actually just ordered a whole case.

Lauren Conrad Beauty The Lip & Cheek Tint $20
My first pregnancy, which was four years ago, was honestly the first time when I was aware of what I was putting on my body and the effects those products could have. I transitioned all my products to clean and vegan, but I hated feeling like I had to compromise — I wanted clean lipsticks with staying power that had really great pigment and felt good. One of the reasons why I came out with my brand now, as opposed to a few years ago, is because I decided if I’m going to do a beauty line, I want to do it correctly. Everyone involved with my line really stays informed on ingredients and the market, so we can create products you can feel good about using. A multitasker is our target customer because I’m one myself. This tint is one of my favorite products for that reason. I use it every day throughout the day. It’s something you can apply to a bare base, you can layer it over light makeup and build it up. It’s about whatever works for you.

Fall is in the Air
Fall is in the air here in southwest Virginia. For us, that means the air is much cooler. The leaves are still quite green, but that will be changing soon. Fall in the Appalachian Mountains is the height of the tourist season. What will it be like this year? Who knows? But the leaves don’t care. They will do their thing and it will be beautiful.
Let me take a brief minute and say welcome to all the new listeners and welcome back to the veteran homestead-loving regulars who stop by the FarmCast for every episode. Thank you all so much for your patronage. I appreciate you all so much. This show is for you.
So where have I been and what’s going on at the homestead?
Our Virginia Homestead Life Updates
You might have noticed I haven’t published a FarmCast episode in a couple of weeks. The first time I missed because I simply did not have the time. And last week I was in tremendous pain. I still am in fact. It’s nothing serious but it is painful. Somewhere in my spine about the level of the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th rib I have some arthritic impingement on a nerve. I’m not sure which one but I am sure that it really, really hurts. Pain can really drag you down. It’s exhausting. My ability to think clearly is diminished and so on. This morning I got up determined to go on with my life and so here I am. Let’s talk about what’s happening on the homestead.
Cows
The biggest news I think is that we have added yet another animal to our homestead. She is a beautiful bred heifer named Rosie. We needed another milk cow for the spring and so the search began for a Normande bred heifer. The bad news is that there were none to be found. The good news is we never give up and just moved on to looking for another breed that had A2A2 and good milking genetics. We found Rosie.
Rosie is a Jersey so now we have two of them. I know, I know. We were going to sell Butter at some point so we would end up with only Normandes. So how did we come to add another one that we will also sell in the future? Sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do. We need milk in the spring. That means we had to get whatever was available. Rosie is adorable and a great addition to our homestead. Who knows, maybe one of you will buy her when we have built up our Normande stock. You will definitely know everything about her life and health if you listen to every episode.
The rest of the girls are doing fine. Violet and Buttercup came into heat yet again. So we know they were still not bred. The best option at this point was to put the bull that we have in with them and see if he can do the job that the AI is not accomplishing. We shall see in a few weeks if he was successful. So far it looks like Cloud, Claire and Butter are all bred but we won’t know for sure until the vet checks them. That will happen next month. We were going to do it this month but now that we have Rosie, we decided to wait a little longer to make sure we can check her as well.
I must say it has been a very frustrating breeding season for us. But that is just another day on the homestead. Challenges abound.
Quail
The last batch of baby quail chicks are doing well. They are in the penthouse now and getting bigger every day. We are going to keep all of the hens and maybe a rooster or two from this batch. Yes fall is in the air and this winter we will be experimenting a little bit more with adding more light to their cages so that they might lay an egg or two throughout the winter. Last winter, once they stopped laying, they didn’t give one single egg until later in March. Then the egg production bounced back to full capacity within a week. With the added hens and a little more light, we might just get a few eggs. We shall see.
Donkeys
I know the donkeys are going to need another manicure soon. That’s always an unpleasant task but needs to be done nonetheless. It’s not so much that it is unpleasant as it is that Scott has to get into very uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time in order to get the job done. But like so many tasks on the homestead, it must be done whether it is comfortable or not. Now that I think about it, that’s not so different than cleaning house. Some of those tasks are much less pleasant than others. Cleaning the bathtub comes to mind.
The donkeys had a good time a couple of weeks ago when a customer brought two of her children along when picking up her beef. I put together a spontaneous homestead tour and the donkeys were central to that. The young lady was the most interested in the animals. She even walked out into the field and braved the various moon pies to get a close up encounter with Virginia, Luna and Wendell. She only got a very brief time to lay hands on the calves before they decided to be elsewhere. But the donkeys – that’s a different story. Donkeys are very, very friendly beasts. They love human attention. Once they got over the strangeness of a person they had never seen before, they were grooving on the affection coming their way.
Sheep and Goats
The sheep and goats are doing well. We got yet another call from a neighbor a week or so ago that one of the goats was out on the road. I think I’ve mentioned that one doe that goes in and out whenever she chooses. So far, she hasn’t gotten herself run over and she’s back with the herd again.
The breeding ram that we have is a bottled-fed lamb from last year. He has four companions that were born this year. All of them are now in the field with the calves. That means I get to see them every day, twice a day when I go out to give the calves their bottles of milk. It’s such a pleasure to see that Lambert grew up to be such a great ram. His dad just keeled over and died last winter. We have no idea why. It happens. But Lambert will pick up the slack beginning in just over a month. Did I mention that fall is in the air? That means sheep breeding is closing in fast.
Now that I think about it, I’m going to have to decide which ewes get bred and which not. Those chosen for breeding will need to be separated from the rest. Should we do six or eight this year? Last year it was eight, though the plan is for six. Eight worked out pretty well though. We shall see.
Garden
I had a friend come over and pick a whole bunch of tomatoes to take home and make sauce. I gave her everything I had and got some great blueberry jam in exchange. We are both very happy. It is likely that I will not even grow tomatoes next year. I have canned 35 quarts of diced tomatoes and a couple dozen jars of tomato sauce. What will I grow if I don’t grow tomatoes? What will I grow in their place?
Potatoes
The potatoes were apparently planted too late to make a fall crop. I’ll remember that for next year. When it pops up on the calendar, get it done. Don’t wait another four weeks or more before getting them in the ground. Out of about 85 or 90 potato starts, less than 10 have peeked their little leaves above the ground. The cooler days are great for growing good potatoes, but it also means the frost is coming soon. Oh well, there is always next year.
Sunflowers
We harvested all of the sunflowers and they are currently hanging up in the attic over the commercial kitchen and cheesemake rooms. I keep thinking about going up there to see how they are doing. But if I do that, it means that I will then have yet another task on my To-Do list that will need to get done. If I procrastinate, they will still be there and the tasks will still need to be done but I can keep my list shorter for just a little while longer. The illusion of being caught up with all of my tasks is maintained. That’s right. I can fool myself with the best of them.
Peas
The crowder peas are finally slowing down. I will likely plant even more of these gems next year. They are so easy to grow and we love them. It looks like next year the garden may be really heavy on beans and peas. I also plan to grow English peas. Perhaps even two crops of them. Green peas must be started early, before it gets hot. And likewise, this cooler weather is ideal for growing a second crop.
Beans
I’m pleased with the black, red, and white beans that I grew this year. The red and white beans put on bumper crops that are just now getting ready to complete their cycle. The black beans put on one crop and then died back. The other two died back some but then came back strong with a second, somewhat smaller, crop of great beans.
I only had two beds of green beans and could have used many more. This is the one thing that people ask for at the farmer’s market. I’ve heard that there is no money in them at the market but I will grow some extra next year to see why that is so.
Celery
One thing that I have in the garden that I have rarely talked about is the celery. It’s coming along now and I’m getting excited about harvesting some of it. This is another crop that looks like it won’t produce very much income, but I will bring a few to the market anyway. Mostly I just love to share the fruits of my labor. I will have plenty for myself as well. These lovely plants will get chopped up and put in the dehydrator. I’ve already used up everything I had from last year. There was a little mishap just about harvest time last year when the calves got the garden and ate most of the celery. This year, I’m looking forward to building up my stores of dried celery.
Culinary Herbs
This was my first year to grow a significant amount of culinary herbs. It has been a success for the most part. I’ve had lots of extras to sell at market and I certainly have plenty of fresh herbs for cooking and lots of herbs to dry and store for later. This is an area that I want to expand on in the future. However, the next step there is to create a permanent location. So many of them are perennials or annuals and biennials that will reseed themselves. They need a permanent location and, dare I say, an aesthetically pleasing area known as my herb garden. But where? Where is the perfect permanent location? We shall see.
Peppers
The last thing I’m going to talk about is the peppers. I love growing peppers. The problem with peppers is that just a couple of plants can produce so many peppers. I’m thinking of the hot ones right now. What do I do with so many serrano peppers? Anyone got suggestions?
Canning, Drying, Selling at Market
Some of the things I’m doing with all of them so far is canning, drying and selling a few at the market. I’ve canned some of those great banana papers that go so well on sandwiches. And the jalapenos are also great on sandwiches. And what about a mixed pepper with a blend of hot and mild peppers. That one didn’t come out as hot as I would have liked. I’m going to do another batch of those and add more serrano peppers to the recipe. After all, I have a ton of them.
Cayenne
Hanging up in my kitchen are three strings of cayenne peppers, about 2 or 3-feet each. They are gorgeous. I simply threaded a sewing needle and threaded them one after another on the string, put a fancy knot on each end so they won’t slip off and hung them up to dry. One strand is already pretty dry and the other two are well on their way. I don’t know if I will ever use that much cayenne pepper, but they sure make great kitchen decorations. I smile every time I look at them.
Pepper Jam
Another experiment I am doing this year is making pepper jam. I have all the ingredients and I have the task popping up on my calendar for a couple of weeks now. Alas, I haven’t gotten around to completing the task. But soon, very soon, that’s going to happen. I’ll let you know how that turns out.
Final Thoughts

How important is the stove or oven mouth direction for feng shui?
Tumblr media
An important feng shui point regarding the stove location and positioning is to have the stove placed in a way that allows you to have a good view of your kitchen. Cooking with your back to the incoming flow of energy is not good feng shui.
Unless you can actually change the location of your stove, let’s say if you plan to use feng shui in renovating your kitchen soon, I would suggest not worrying about the direction of the oven mouth.
The first and most important aspect in feng shui regarding the stove is its location in the bagua map of your home.
As the stove represents the fire feng shui element, it is best to have it in a location that is compatible with or is not damaged by its fire energy. Usually, South and Southwest are considered ideal feng shui spots for the oven.
When a kitchen door faces the bathroom door:
Having the kitchen and the bathroom doors face each other is considered very bad feng shui, indeed. One does not need to know much about feng shui to intuitively understand that this is not a good set-up for a healthy home.
When two doors are opposite each other, the feng shui energies flow very fast in and out of the spaces that are guarded by the doors. This is why another direct door alignment – the front door aligned with the back door – is also considered bad feng shui.
What you have in the case of a bathroom door facing the kitchen door is the energies of the bathroom (release, purification, letting go, etc) mingling with the precious energies of the kitchen (nourishment, cooking, warmth, love & support).
In practical terms, you have the undesirable odours from the bathroom affecting the energy of the kitchen, which is the heart of the home. In more complex terms, you also have the energies of the water feng shui element of the bathroom going against the fire feng shui element of the kitchen.
It will be harder to maintain optimum health and loving communication levels in a house with this set-up, but it does not mean you cannot do your best to even slightly improve the situation.
Your goal is to create as much division as possible between the kitchen and the bathroom, and here are 5 simple feng shui tips to consider if you cannot move out or plan a renovation.
Always keep the bathroom door closed. This will help keep its energies from spreading into the whole home, and especially into the kitchen.
Be sure your bathroom is always clean and a pleasure to be in, meaning it has really good feng shui energy.
Find a creative way to define the boundary between the bathroom and the kitchen. For example, you can experiment with a divider screen, a tall plant or a bamboo curtain (if your kitchen has an open entryway) or have doors with no glass (if the kitchen doors have glass inserts).
Choose different wall paint colour on the two opposing walls — the kitchen door wall and the bathroom door wall. This can work well to define and energetically separate the two areas.
Creating a focal point in between the two areas will draw the energies away from mingling and bring a sense of beauty. Work with big scale art and choose colours and images according to the feng shui bagua requirements for each specific area.
Once you understand what needs to be done and experiment with various solutions, you might find many more ways to improve your current situation.
If you own a home, look into the possibility of at least a minor renovation to remedy this situation. And, if you rent, you will sure be wise to avoid this set-up again! Understanding what makes a good feng shui floor plan and what is the best placement of all rooms in the house can help you make good decisions in the future.
If your kitchen is very small
The kitchen is considered the heart of the home not only in feng shui, but in many, if not all, old cultures. Feng shui wisdom adds the element of the state of your kitchen reflecting the state of your health; as well as attracting the flow of wealth and abundance into your life.
Tumblr media
The kitchen is also a part of the very important feng shui triangle – the bedroom, the bathroom and the kitchen – which is directly connected to the state of your health and well-being.
What do you do, though, when your kitchen is very small and it seems like you can never keep it clean or find enough space for all your kitchen supplies?
If you have a difficult time with people putting things away and keeping it clutter free, it may mean that you have more items than your kitchen can accommodate.
Decide on the very minimum you can get away with and have “a place for everything and everything in its place”. I know this is much easier said than done, but see if you can pack some items away to improve the feng shui energy of your kitchen.
One feng shui decor element that usually works for a small kitchen is, strangely enough, to have some open display shelving. This little feng shui trick opens up a small, confined space and lightens the energy by creating a better flow.
Of course, with this comes the added issue of keeping the open shelves clutter free. It is good to know, though, that for good feng shui your whole space has to be clutter-free, be it visible or not.
You can also consider repainting the wood cupboards in a lighter colour, such as white or pale butter yellow , whichever colour works best with all the other elements in your kitchen (the countertops, the floors, etc.)
With a small kitchen smart lighting becomes crucial, so be sure to not limit yourself to one boring, energy draining typical ceiling fixture. Experiment with different levels of lighting and sense the change in energy each one of them brings. For a space to have a better quality of energy, at least 2-3 layers of lighting are recommended; this is especially important for a small kitchen.
Mirrors, of course, are one of the best feng shui solutions for small spaces and are sure called the aspirin of feng shui for a good reason! Find a way to place a mirror in your kitchen so that it brings more light and visually expands the space.
Be sure to also have some fresh energy in your small kitchen, be it a small container garden with aromatic herbs, or just some fresh fruits on display.
Most of all, keep it clean and keep it simple, and find many ways to fall in love with your very small kitchen. It is definitely possible.

Feng Shui of Kitchen Plates Shapes and Colours
Round is the feng shui shape with the most flow, or harmonious movement. This is not to say that square shaped plates are bad feng shui, not at all, just different energy, slower, more grounding.
What colours and shapes of plates should I use in my kitchen for good feng shui?
What plates should I use in my kitchen for good feng shui?
Are round dishes better feng shui than the square ones?
What colour is best feng shui for plates, or does it depend on the kitchen location?
This is an interesting kitchen feng shui question, but I have to start with this: there are really no shoulds in good and successful feng shui applications.
It is always best to go with what you love and are drawn to.
This especially applies to your kitchen and your bedroom, as both places, feng shui-wise, are directly connected to your well-being; and only you know what makes you feel happy and nourished. Start with your own preferences, then see how they compare with the general feng shui guidelines.
In the course of understanding deeper levels of feng shui, you may feel drawn to make subtle (or not so subtle!) adjustments to your feng shui choices, but first always be guided by your feelings.
So, to answer your question with another question I would ask: “What plates do you like the most in your kitchen? What colours are you drawn to the most while dining?”
Personally, I use white plates, mostly round ones. I think white colour it is the best energy foundation for the beauty and nourishment of the food that is served on these plates. You will also notice that good restaurants always use white plates.
To me, a clean white plate is like a fresh canvas waiting for the next masterpiece.
Round is the shape that has the most flow or harmonious movement, thus a fresh energy most suited to maintain, present and enjoy food. This is not to say that square shaped plates are bad feng shui, just a different energy that is slower and more grounding.
I guess one could say that square shaped plates make you slow down more.
Colour-wise, I would say the best choice would be based on your personal preference, unless you have a big collection of dishes on display. In this case, you would like to have colours appropriate for your kitchen decor scheme, as well as for the bagua area the kitchen is located in.
Tumblr media
Generally, blue is a good colour for dishes when one is trying to lose weight; while red, orange and yellow will stimulate the appetite.

Witchy Asks & Responses
Recently, I saw a reblog by @alpinewitch called Witchy Asks. It included a bunch of questions from Witches or Witch-based objects. So as I am bored. I’ve decide to answer them one by one.
Broomstick: Where is the most fun place you traveled to? Me: The most fun I have ever traveled to is Lanzarote in Spain. It’s beautiful and the hot sun feels comforting as we don’t get that sort of weather much in Ireland. Exploring and seeing the sights was an entirely new experience as I usually only go on Holiday to the UK. It was great.
Altar: Are you organized or messy?
Me: Definitely, messy. I am trying to improve; but I procrastinate a lot on tiding and organizing. But for the sake of my practice, I will have to improve.
Herbs: List some of your strengths.
Me: My strengths? Heh, I am much better at listing bad things about me. But I will shall it a try:
Strength 1 -  I am a loyalist, I am not an actively greedy person and I usually tend to put others before myself. I get attached to people easily and usually try to actively maintain relationship in my life for as long as possible. This all calls back to my father, who was the opposite of that... I promised myself never to be like him, never to run from those I love for my own sick gain... Never to leave his own child sitting on a staircase for hours waiting for his father to arrive to pick him up for a sleepover only to not show up... I haven’t seen him or heard from him since I was six...
But here I go again, I really shouldn’t hold onto the past as much as I do. I am fine, my life is good now and the past is behind me. Now onto the next strength
Strength 2 - I am good at sharing. Like I mentioned before, I have never been one for greed, I tend to share a lot of what I have with those around me. Friends usually just have to ask if they can borrow or if I’d be willing to share something and I would gladly share whatever I have with them. I like to see people around me smile. It’s nice to know I did something to please someone rather than to upset them.
Strength 3 -  I am a good writer and speaker. I am the best in my English Classroom and are usually chosen by the School Board to write all their letters and give all their speeches to the rest of the School. I am very proud at the leaps and strides, I have made in this field of art and hope to make more in the future.
Mortar and pestle: How do you deal with pressure?
Me: I usually write down my frustrations and hand that to my parents or someone who is willing to be there to comfort and guide me through the pressure or stress.
Usually just having someone to vent to and to listen to me is all I need. Sometimes, having someone there to tell me, what I might have done wrong and how I can make it better is all I need to get out of a rough patch.
I don’t feel pressure or stress much any more as I have grown to avoid it, but when I do. I know my parents and friends are there to help me through it. It warms my heart to know that.
Candle: List at least three of your biggest passions.
Passion 1 - I want to attract an audience. Whether that be to teach or to entertain, I enjoy bestowing something whether that be an emotion or knowledge onto those around me and seeing people use what I have bestowed to better themselves. I want to be a Teacher or an Artist/Entertainer of some sort. This is one of my greatest passion.
Passion 2 - To have many friends and a loving family is another one of my passions. To have many friends is self explanatory, but the family part is more complex. See I may be Gay, but that doesn’t mean I don’t want to have a family with happy husband and kids.
I plan to adopt when I am older and have fallen in love. Although, this may change in the future. Who knows? I am still only 15 is all.
Passion 3 - Witchcraft. This one is mostly self explanatory and I go into better detail in one of the Lower questions on this list. I enjoy learning Wards and Spells, I enjoy learning about all the interesting deities that exist and enjoy learning more about the Astral and those who inhabit it.
Witchcraft is now a Hobby and passion for me. I wouldn’t trade it for the World.
Book of Spells: Are you hiding anything?
Me: My past................................
Poppet: If you could do anything to anyone, what would you do, and to who?
Me: I would save this opportunity to save someone I love from danger or death. The ultimate gift I suppose you could say.
Sigil: Create or destroy?
Me: Definitely, create. I see massive value in art and life, I would love to see both these fields not only be healthy but expand. I guess you could say, it’s a wish of mine.
Charm: What turns you on?
Me: Well, I am not really comfortable talking about my kinks publicly, but my preference is gay men for all that are wondering. <3
Ward: What turns you off?
Me: Gore........ Green Witch: Do you have a garden? Plants?
Me: We do have a Garden, but we don’t intervene with it much, it kind of just grows independently by itself. I am not very good with plant and tree names. So I probably couldn’t name everything that grows in it. But it is quite diverse. Cottage Witch: Do you like crafts?
Me: Depends on the type of Craft you are talking about, I enjoy Witchcraft and Writing, but I am not very good at much else. Which soils my enjoyment of making other crafts......
Kitchen Witch: Best meal you've ever had?
Me: There is a Hotel just downtown called the “Carraig Hotel”. It has a restaurant and you can order three course meals there. I had the best meal of my life on my Mother’s 50th Birthday, it was the first and so far only time, my mother allowed me to have Wine.
So, I tried a bit of everything, deciding Rosa Wine was my favorite. I have Garlic Mushrooms & Salad as a Starter, Sirloin Steak (Medium-Rare) as a Main Course and Apple Crumble with Cream & Ice Cream as a Desert. It was all delicious and it was the best meal, I’ve ever had.
Sea Witch:Would you ever swim with sharks? If not, what would you like to swim with?
Me: I would swim with any Sea Creature if I could. But would prefer Dolphins over anything else.
Sex Witch: Favorite position?
Me: Uh....... I am 15............. I haven’t had actual Sex yet, so I’ll get back to you on that one......
Love Witch: What is your favorite thing about being in love?/What is your favorite thing about being single?
Me: I would love to fall in love with someone, I don’t like being alone. But I guess I still haven’t found the right person for me, so I am single... I haven’t really thought about the benefits of being single... I guess the freedom to do what I wish? I really need more time to think on that one.
Curse Witch: Had any good acts of revenge lately?
Me: No not really, I am not a very vengeful or spiteful person. I’d rather forgive and forget rather than engage in Revenge.... Maybe my stance of this will change in the future? Who knows....
Necromancer: Had any prominent supernatural experiences?
Me: No... Actually this is the main reason, I got interested in Witchcraft in the first place. My life at times can seem so plain and predictable. I needed something to do or to work on during really less than interesting summer break and that is why I decided to give Witchcraft a try.
Once, I begun my research into the field, I got more and more interested in the art of Witchcraft until eventually, I got a recommendation to make a Tumblr Account and bask in the knowledge of those on the platforms. This is when I met inspirations like @dovewithscales
.People like her sealed the deal and made me take my craft more seriously. I am now an active learner of Witchcraft and plan to continue my studies for the future. Blood magick: What's the most physically painful experience you can remember.
Me: When I had my Bowel Prolapse...... I am not comfortable going into more detail for the event is personal and depressing. Sorry.....
*Well, that was all the questions. I hope you enjoyed this little post I made as much I enjoyed writing it. Thanks to @alpinewitch for reblogging this. I wish all that spent the time to read this, a very happy day. Cheers!*
