A Begginers Guide to Crystals
This guide will help you tell real crystals from fake ones (typically glass) and learn which ones are typically most used in witchcraft.
There are some crystals that are faked, or man made, heat treated and even dyed.
Now most places like fancy restaurants that have a gift shop might have one of those rock bins that are filled with a rainbow mess of crystals. These are typically clear quartz that have been "shattered" and then soaked in dye to get the colors that you can see. Sometimes it's not even quartz, but glass.
These you can still use in witchcraft, but more so for color magic or association.
If you suspect that your crystals are glass there are some different ways to help you out.
If your crystal has bubbles- it's usually fake. Bubbles in gems is rare.
If your crystal has a fruity name- it's typically been dyed.
You can also scratch or rub your crystal - if it's smooth and doesn't have pores, then it's fake.
If you're worried that your turquoise is fake, take the tip of a hot pin - if it burns, it's real. If it melts, then it's fake.
If your crystal is really brightly colored, pink, green, blue, and purple- it's probably been dyed. You can Google "real colored crystals vs. dyed crystals and see the differences in the color.
Citrine can (and usually is) heat treated amethyst
Goldstone is actually glass.
Opalite is also glass.
Quartz can scratch glass and plastic bit neither of those can scratch quartz.
Also plastic crystals weigh less.
Crystal Shapes in Witchcraft
Double pointed- absorbs and emits energy
Cluster- radiates energy, great for charging other crystals
Point- concentrates and directs energy
Raw- strong, open energy
Some general rules
If a crystal is round, the energy is calmer
If the crystal isn't smooth or has multiple points, the energy can be directed out of those points
The size of a crystal doesn't dictate the energy it gives off.
Different types of crystals have different energies that they give off. And here are the ones that are typically most used in witchcraft and what they're used for.
Clear Quartz- Clarity
Amethyst- Grounding
Citrine- Happiness
Rose Quartz- Love/self love
Black Tourmaline- Protection
Obsidian- Protection
Aventurine- Luck
Tigers Eye- Money
Labradorite- Aura Healing/protection
There are probably many others that are used but these are the ones that I see most commonly used.
I've found that googling "What crystal is good for ______" it typically comes up with a list of crystals that are actually good for that thing.
Of course some crystals give off different energies to different people. Some may feel more comfortable with Amethyst while others feel more comfortable with obsidian, and that's 100% okay.
Crystals and Color Association
Now this also might depend on the witch but most color associations go something like this:
Blue- Sad/calm
Red- love/anger
Pink- self love
Green- luck/money
Orange- courage
Yellow- happiness
Purple- spirituality
Brown- grounding
Grey- solemn/serious
And with some crystals that's not too far off.
Green crystals are typically associated with money, wealth, and luck. Purple crystals are seen as spiritual while yellow crystals are associated with happiness, and so on and so forth.
Sometimes though, it's all dependant on the witch themselves.
I personally associate my Green Aventurine with protection, grounding and sometimes money. My quartz is also associated with grounding and protection. I do associate self love/love with rose quartz and amethyst with grounding. So again, it's all dependant on the witch.

This is NOT an in-depth list. This is a basics list, and everyone should be doing their own in-depth research into any post on this blog. This is a simple basic guide to help you understand crystals.
