So, let’s talk Transformers. Love me some transformers and I’ve done a whole host of redesigns and takes on characters so I’m gonna post a bunch of em.
So I’m sure most are at least a wee bit aware of Optimus Prime. My take on him, at first anyway, is more akin to Transformers Animated’s version of him where he’s put into this position that’s very much outside of his comfort zone and is now this librarian forced to lead one side of a war on a global scale. He often wonders why he was put into this position, why him. But it becomes clear in his diplomacy and strategy. Being a librarian before the war he was always reading. What fascinated him specifically was history, from ancient to recent. And as any history buff would tell you, it always in some way repeats itself. Optimus finds himself internalizing a lot of what he read and learned in the library and using it to both win battles and more importantly to him, find a peaceful and diplomatic way to resolve conflict. Because he will do whatever it takes to protect the innocent, by using peaceful means first and foremost. However as the war carry’s on it begins to weigh on him. Slowly but surely he becomes more and more burned by the almost never ending violence. He becomes tired. Tired of seeing his closest friends dying in his arms day after day. Tired of his peaceful methods never seeming to work and only postponing the inevitable battles that are yet to be waged. Tired of the war. Of the Decepticons. And one day after finding himself mortally injured, beyond repair, he snaps. He then vows not only to end the war through whatever means necessary but to end the Decepticons, till all are gone.
So, as far as design goes, I was mostly inspired by his appearance in IDW, specifically as drawn by Alex Milne and the perfect effect Powermaster Optimus Prime of all things. Those with the back panels from his movie design come together to create the first appearance of Optimus in my hypothetical story. He’s not even remotely the tallest boy in the room, standing a head shorter than Ironhide and being dwarfed by Megatron
The second is when he fully accepts his role as leader, becoming an Optimus people are generally more familiar with. I tried to make it more original, taking all the elements from the first design and accentuate them. Main additions are his shoulders being jaded more off the movie design with their shaping, and the front wheels and fenders of his truck mode are on his back like his Prime First Edition deluxe toy. He’s bigger now. Not as commandingly tall as he is in G1, Prime or the movies, but bigger than he was. Now he’s a head and a half shorter than Megatron.
Finally, his look after he becomes heavily injured. He basically does all commanding from his base. Constantly on life support to make sure he can decide the war’s end. The concept all came from me wanting to start a hypothetical series pretty traditionally but then it ends with all the main characters becoming their shattered glass counterparts. So his color scheme reflects that. Also as a side note since I do these pencil to paper it was kind of a bitch to draw almost the same thing twice.
