I wanted to put this in an ask instead of burying it in the notes but i think the reason 'racism metaphor with different species' happens so often is because the anthropomorphization process turns the different species into animal versions of fantasy races. not different variations of the same species, nor completely separate species with separate (and possibly conflicting) niches, but a secret third thing that does both (and racism metaphors) worse
then again fantasy races don't have predator-prey dynamics as far as i know... or do they
also are there any solutions to this problem that you know?
hold on lemme make a chart

very random ask, but if you have any thoughts, I'm curious to know: I remember for the AOT final chap you made some comments comparing Eren's "tantrum" to incels- how it can come from a real place of hurt, which doesn't make the impact any less harmful. I was curious if you've ever stumbled on incel content (not like Andrew Tate, just dudes with a webcam). Do you ever feel a desire to engage with them? Try to somehow help them even when you're so angry? I can't help but want to, even if futile.
For Eren, I more made the comparison to toxic Reddit dudebros, some of whom are like that, but not all.
No, I don't really seek it out because it would just enrage me, and there are better things to do with my time and with anger lol. I don't think it would be particularly helpful for me.
That said, I think that they're human beings who are feeling exceedingly alienated and lonely, desperate and scared, and project that blame onto someone else (women). And, they are entitled about it and instead of taking responsibility and doing what they can, they give up and complain because it's easier than actually trying to better themselves and the hellscape we live in. Even if it is futile. And part of it is surely the anger about privilege being called out and the entitlement that comes with that, but part of it is also genuine loneliness and confusion.
I dunno. I've seen other people engage, and engage positively too (like ContraPoints on YouTube, for example). And that's great, because someone has to to not write those people off as subhuman, because that only breeds further radicalization. People can't change without relationship, and they can't change without hope. I can intellectually empathize with where they're coming from, but I'm not sure I would personally be able to make any sort of connection without ending up dropkicking them into a wall lol.
Like, Idk, you only have to log on to reddit to see a lot of widespread misogyny incel-talking points there, like the zillions of fake paternity fraud posts or how men don't understand nor participate in empathizing with what it's like to be the pregnant person in a relationship (you do not in fact have equal say, nor do 99% of them even understand the most basic pregnancy facts like how it's calculated--hint it isn't date of conception) or who leave their partners when they get sick. (The latter one is personal for me, too; I had a boyfriend who withdrew and "couldn't deal with it" when I was told I might have lymphoma; I did not end up having it, but either way, that was basically the end right there.)
I do think incels and other radicalized groups of people can change. I know they can, because I grew up in a fundie cult and left. And that won't happen if the entire world just cuts them off, but that also doesn't mean anyone is obligated to reach out, if that makes sense. But for me, this particular group incenses me because of particular triggers and experiences I have. I'm more likely to reach out to the fundamentalist religious types because I can, well, understand a bit more.
What's needed to reach out to people in any sort of extremist place is seeing them as human beings, honestly. You'd be surprised at how far that simple idea--treating someone like a person more than just their stupid, toxic, evil beliefs--goes. Which does mean reaching out to them with more than just "I want to change your mind" because that treats people like a project and people don't tend to like that lol. But reaching out and wanting to hear their stories and listen, not for a "gotcha" moment but out of "hey, you're a person" is fair. And not everyone can reach out to everyone, and that's also fair. But also be aware of groupthink and how it functions for your own sanity and safety, too.

you may have already answered something like this but, as a fan of the comics from before the show, I’m curious what your thoughts on the changes were. personally i really enjoyed it as an adaptation and my only real issues were aesthetic (it needed more bright color)
idk if I mentioned I was talking about paper girls in the previous ask or not whoops 😅
I really don't mind most of the changes! Paper Girls is such an expansive, explosive story on paper; the comic versions of these children are ping-pong balls firing off from one insane, splashy situation to the next in a heartbeat. A world made of ink and paper can afford to have crazy dinosaurs and hockey sticks sticking out of thin air and bombastic scene-scapes in past, super-past, super-future, etc. The show...in order to be feasible, kind of can't? If they'd done a one-to-one execution, 1) it would have cost a truly insane amount (or looked absolutely awful with VFX teams being run ragged lately) and 2) I don't think it would be accessible for non-comic readers. I think they did an excellent job of toning the whole thing down without losing the heart of what's happening, grounding the world so the viewer doesn't feel as though their face is being blown off with every shot.
I also think this really benefits the girls in terms of character building. KJ in the comics figures out she's gay because she gets some flash-bang images dumped into her head, and one of them is kissing Mac. That's great for that medium--but you get SO much more out of that journey onscreen by actively seeing her adult self be relaxed and happy with a girlfriend. Getting to watch KJ have that quiet mental breakdown (which, in 1988, she absolutely would do; finding out at 12 that you're destined to be queer, especially coming from a family that "cares what everyone else thinks" like hers does, would be incredibly jarring) and then slowly come to terms with what it all means is much more effective on a grounded level. Same with Mac finding out she dies, not from some random lady telling her the family moved afterward, but from the older brother she's revered her whole life--and then building on that relationship to help her on this journey of understanding she's always had value. Erin getting time to discover her adult self is way cooler than she gave her credit for gives adult!Erin's final scene so much more punch than if it they'd gone the clone!Erin route, and gives her room to learn that maybe there's more to life than just being the caretaker.
None of these story beats are better or worse, per se; they just exist more cleanly in the tone of this world. The comic beats are perfect for a comic world, and the television ones are easier to digest as viewers who watch these actors make choices to flesh out the characters scene-to-scene.
Even the colors, I understand. Like. The comics have some of my favorite art, hands down. Paper Girls and Wicked and the Divine are probably my top-tier comics for just how gorgeous they are--but, as with the languages of the future teens and the Old Timers, I wonder if having the palette that extreme would have been alienating to the eyeballs. The whole final episode is kind of rough to watch simply because they've cast that magenta filter over it all; imagine a whole show with such vibrancy. It's possible to do, but I don't think it would have fit the tone as well. I think they found a middle ground that works really well for a first season, and if they get a second, I would think that is where they might start to play with expanding the imagery.

I have an odd question that id like ur input on. Im writing my 1st fic and im wondering if readers would like a fic where we see eddie gushing over reader and what he loves about her and pretty much him falling in love with her OR reader falling in love with eddie and all the reasons she loves him. Like i dont want to write it where the focus is mostly on reader idk if im making any sense. Lol.
you're definitely making sense! <3 i've found that most of the time, fics that focus on the latter choice do better (and even as a reader, i tend to enjoy them more). and i have a theory if you'll hear me out.
with x reader fics, eddie is this established character. he isn't faceless and he isn't a place holder like reader is meant to be. sure, everyone has their own personal headcanons and versions of eddie, but as a character, we know him and have a lot to work off of with canon to give reasons to love him (half the time, i just utilize canon adjacent headcanons and real reasons i do love this silly fictional man so damn much!)
reader is meant to be this slot that anyone can insert themselves into. when us writers get specific and start giving attributes to readers (aka... reasons eddie might love reader), it can alienate some people. it's just a really slippery slope.
for example, if i wrote a story about eddie loving a reader, and one of the details about her that he loves is her being a swiftie, that doesn't apply to everyone who reads my stuff. it can take people out of that fic, because suddenly, that's not them. this can run even more extreme, especially when you start getting either more specific or if you end up in physical attributes territory (which brings up the very important topic of inclusivity).
some fics i write specifically because i want one of my own attributes to be shown a little love by eddie. hence why i say i do have some pretty niche stories i don't post right away. but for the most part, i try to stay really inclusive, and that means the spotlight landing on eddie a majority of the time.
TL;DR: this is just my really long-winded way of saying that if you want a fic that people are more likely to enjoy, what people seem to enjoy most is getting to see themselves in the fic, especially if it's x reader. and something we can all see in ourselves is that love we have for eddie. you're 'safest' bet is a reader falling in love with eddie and focusing on all the reasons they do so.
but, by all means, if there is something specific about reader you wanted to show love to, i still encourage you to write it! <3

I was thinking about your repost of warnings and being more inclusive to a variety of bodies in ff. Something that pulls me out of a fic so often is hairstyle descriptions. This obviously isn't the same as not being inclusive of different body shapes/sizes or readers of color, but to me its often really gratingly pushes white cishet traditional gender presentation. Like...not all women have long hair (which is my thing) or can have white girl hairstyles. Like why do you have to write about long flowy hair and messy buns so much? This is already really irritating as a person with short hair which is a much smaller deal than physical things you can't change. And I keep thinking that a lot of this language is probably also really alienating to pocs with curly hair. So....ugh!
I really appreciate you being vocal on this topic and I love your blog and your writing so much!
Hair is another one I catch all the time!!! I'm a white woman with loose, wavy curls but I keep my hair short. It's actually short enough that I can't really put it up right now, and while I love the idea of having long beautiful hair, it's just never been something I've been able to achieve because the maintenance alone drives me nuts. And I still have enough hair that it could be grabbed or played with. This is not going to be the same experience a person of color with curls might have!!
It's something that is so frequently overlooked. It's one thing if it's just a line like "He noses at the nape of your neck and smells your hair," because even a person with with a tight textured curl at any length will still have hair to smell, right? And with smut scenes involving hair pulling as a warning, like, I can suspend my disbelief because there's likely an element of fantasy involved. And then there's the matter of reader-insert characters that are explicitly written as POC which!! That's amazing! These characters are written with these traits in mind and that representation is so incredibly important, especially in a fandom that celebrates Korean men while also having a huge issue with white washing.
When it comes to a reader-insert that's intended as neutral, it just seems disingenuous to assume that everyone has long white girl hair that is easily thrown up into a bun at the end of the day. It bothers me in the same way that descriptions of super skimpy clothing do; it's just clear that the writer doesn't really care to have an eye for inclusivity, whether by willful ignorance or by coincidence.
And again, there are points where I can suspend my disbelief! Sometimes the reading experience is immersive enough that I don't even notice, or maybe the character is very specific and those are moments where the character writing is strong enough that I'm just stepping into their experience of the story. But ... there's an intent there. Not every writer approaches things as such, and with that in mind I think we have to approach the convention of a reader-insert character in a different way.
I often feel like I'm talking to the air about this stuff, so I really appreciate you reaching out. Seriously. I think this really important and it doesn't get the attention it needs. Folks will talk openly about the problems, but I don't often see action or change taking place within work. Effecting these changes can be difficult for some writers because they can be so set in their ways, and that's frustrating. They want the fantasy of it all, rather than showing people that it's okay to be desired as they are. I think this is disingenuous; if you want feedback and praise, writing your "fantasies" with more people in mind would probably get more feedback, right? idk, I'm just rambling again at this point 🙃
Anyway, again, I'm really glad yall are reaching out about this!! I'm happy you're enjoying my stories and reading my thoughts :)

Hey Foxy, do you have any tips for writing. You're so dang prolific, idk how you do it. HOW DO YOU DO IT?! 😂
I should probably track these answers because I *love* talking about writing.
I did a first post months ago with some of my process and tips which might be interesting to you here.
But I'll add some new things too! Here are some other questions I've been lately here or in ao3 comments.
Q: How are you so prolific?
I don't let shit stop me. Our brains can throw up so many hurdles in the creative process, and you have to tell those hurdles to eat shit. Can't think of a word? I put ****WTFWORD*** in the sentence and keep going, I can find it later. Need to fact check something? I'll put **TRUE?** Need to research something? I view that as a totally protected and valuable step, and I carve time out and don't consider that "not writing."
So I ignore those hurdles and I just write. About whatever! About anything! Sometimes I'm like, waiting in line at the grocery story and it's like, "oh, wouldn't it be cute if two people were in line and they were bickering over the headlines" and then I just write that. There doesn't have to be a point, you're flexing your writing muscle. Writing for me is a lot of putting daydreams down on paper, even if they're just isolated blurbs or just fragments or conversation or whatever.
Q: How do you stay motivated?
Sometimes writing is chasing an inspiration and the words just flow freely. Other days writing is a sore muscle and you tell yourself you are going to write 500 words even if they're about nothing, even if you're probably going to throw them away. You have to figure out when is the right time to take a break and do something else, or when is the right time to put in some work, even if it's not easy that day. Depends what the outcome you're looking for is, but I can promise you there are chapters of my story that have been a struuuuuggle to write --and the irony is they often tend to be the ones people love the most in the end! Even though I hate them because I'm aware of what a struggle they were to write!
I also highly recommend music, candles, pinterest, and snacking. I personally eat baby carrots by the bag full since gum is bad for my teeth. The act of chewing makes your brain work. I keep pinterest open and will literally bounce back and forth just looking at pictures every couple of sentences sometimes. Not even necessarily related pictures! It just give my brain a moment to take a breath.
Q: How do you write such built out characters?
I find people fascinating, even when they're terrible. Be open to the fact that people are wonderful and annoying, generous and selfish, all at the same time. If you don't occasionally want to throttle your own character, you probably are writing a character very much like you --which is ok! But if you write a lot of characters, you're not going to get that variety. Everyone has their own opinions, their own habits others find annoying, their own biases, their own dreams, and their own justification for why they do what they do. I do not worry about writing "likeable" characters for readers, only whether i want the characters in the story to perceive someone as likeable or not (Pippa is a good example! JK did NOT find her likeable in the beginning but everyone else did! The way he and others viewed a habit of hers completely different is a good example of how differently people can respodn to the same stimulus.) My personal style is more just to let people make their own down mistakes and have their own stupid opinions and quirks. I also spend time thinking about things for my side characters too --I know their backgrounds, their family, their dreams, their struggles, etc. Maybe not to the degree of the main characters, but enough that they can naturally be consistent and have their own little progress arcs in a story.
Q: Any other tips for writing?
Consume everything you can get your hands onto, but never compare what you're creating to someone else. There is not just one kind of good cookies, MOST cookies are AMAZING, and even a bad cookie is usually better than no cookie.
Learn all the "rules" of writing but don't hesitate to break them when it feels right. "Write what you know" or "show don't tell" or even grammar rules. No one's style or process will be identical to yours and that's fine.
Maintain a careful balance of writing to where you think you're going but be flexible when the story changes course.
Worry more about emotional sincerity and purpose than physical details (in characters, settings, etc. You can use the atmosphere in a room to emphasize that a character is stressed or sad or happy, etc.) But make sure that your physical details and staging make sense and are consistent.
Don't judge your characters. Sure, be aware of where you and they may disagree. Be aware of where your readers may have an emotional or upset response. But if you're writing your characters from a place of judgement, you aren't going to let them live their story and the whole thing will feel like a moral lecture.
TRUST YOU READERS. This is a hard one, because I see all the discourse about how "people are stupid and they'll miss everything." Some readers are going to misunderstand your intentions. Some readers are going to draw wild conclusions you never dreamed of. Some readers are going to get really mad at the things your characters do. But as soon as you start talking down to your readers, or dumb down the emotions you're writing about, or overly spell out the connections you want them to make, you're just going to alienate them. If readers do get something very differently than what you expected and it's lingering, stop and get a sense of what misled them. Remember that readers aren't in your head, they don't know the invisible strings, so probably it means you just need to re-emphasize something, or have a character reflect on something, or a particular wording came across differently. So fix it! It's all good! Stories are alive. But don't assume your readers won't make a connection or see something coming, just because your characters have blinders on in the story; work with that to capitalize on reader response.
Q: What about quick tricks?
OK here are some very specific things I've done:
- Give your word document a background color so you aren't staring at a white page
- Sit in a weird place in your house you wouldn't normally sit, like on the floor in a corner of your kitchen
- You've heard of edging... try some WRITING edging. You know you want to write that scene. The emotions are right there. Your brain is going wild. Let your brain go wild a liiiittle longer before you actually sit down to write it out.
- Read your writing out loud. This will very quickly reveal awkward phrasing, forced dialogue, and typos.
Ok ok I think that is probably enough blathering for now. <3 hope any of this was worth your time to read!

I worry that this might be a bit of a 'not really my business' type question but you're totes not obligated to answer it at all! I'm just honestly really curious about your opinion on shipping, and on shipping your own characters with others? I saw you put Dion in a girl love group on DA and it got me wondering if you're looking to get her shipped or just out to have a good time? (not looking to ship myself but got curious about your opinion on it when I did see it!)
Nah actually I’m cool with questions like these about my characters!
Mostly I join to have a good time I guess?? I like to look for new friends through rp groups and such, and if my character gets shipped they get shipped that’s an added bonus for me? I’m also pretty happy with my oc just having friends. In Dion’s case if you’re her friend you’re practically dating her it’s the same thing since she’s willing to make out (w/ or w/o tongue depending on the person) with a friend ‘platonically’. Like keep in mind your dating a person who canonly wants to be a rockstar and dropped out of school n’ ran away from her adopted family since she found it all to be a waste of time. (which I guess she was right since she’s got all the alien shit to deal with that I don’t think requires a high school diploma)
Also for me shipping isn’t something all too serious for me, and like a lot of the time I don’t make it canon depending on the character and if I think it works for their story. (like with Dion it’d definitely be an AU thing cus I already got stuff planned for her and I feel a canon pairing wouldn’t work for her story, and I try to tell people about this ahead of time since I’ve had people get legit mad at me in the past) I’m also pretty okay with a buddy AU shipping their character with other people (if we’re both comfortable with it I know not everyone is) and I’m pretty much the type to do that with my own characters as well. (like example my oc Matt he has a rlly cute  bf in an AU but I’m open to making another AU where he has a different partner)
I am a bit wary with shipping tho since I’ve notice some folks take the thing a little too seriously for my taste, but when they happen I love them a lot and get super attached!! I’m that person that won’t talk about them for a while but when I do I pretty much treat it like it was a fresh thing just yesterday and get super giddy just talking about stuff they’d do together and all that.
I already have a few ships that have lasted me years and I love a lot of them so much!! Some are about like 5 years old or maybe older idk I lost fucking track.
