Just realized I should do event leaks but tbh everyone sucks, Katsu suffers from taihou syndrome while having nothing that makes her vaguely tanky, chikuma would be decent if she weren’t a fuckign torp ca (wish some of her kit had better proc rates), I was talking with cappy and completely forgot yura exists but wouldn’t you know she’s a nicheless ijn purp cruiser so there wasn’t anything to remember, the dds are good for what they are, which is purple dds which we all know the song and dance and the crown jewel, shima fucking kaze has been reduced to a fucking stat stick who can’t even out torp ayaya with a niche ass cross fleet (ijn dd) and a bunch of barrages, only one of which is vaguely inch resting and at this point I’m just fukcign malding, so no leak analysis boys sorry

Taihou was touted as one of the first true armored flattops in IJN service, and was promoted as 'impervious' to damage thanks to so-called 'redundancies', yet she still blew up. Taking that into account, what are her chances of survival if she had an american damcon crew instead of an IJN one?

She almost certainly would have survived. 

The US also suffered an embarrassing and maddening loss of a carrier that should not have sunk - the Lexington. Between the Lexington at the Battle of the Coral Sea and the gruesome fate of Kido Butai, both sides had learned well the danger of avgas fumes. Taiho’s damcon people were obviously aware of the danger and did everything in their power to ventilate the ship, even smashing out portholes with hammers. 

From what I’ve been able to read about the Taiho and her design, I’d say the fault can be put most firmly on her Admiral, Ozawa. Covering up the forward elevator well with planking to finish launching his strikes was the right choice; getting those strikes in the air was absolutely essential in the overall battle. But after that, he should’ve ceased flight operations immediately and turned his attention to protecting his ship. Even though his damcon people didn’t know what the hell to do, they did know the danger, and were obviously cognizant that the hangar needed ventilation, as they kept the rear elevator down for a while (until resumption of flight ops was ordered again, natch,) to help ventilate. Uncovering the forward elevator well after his strikes were airborne would’ve ventilated the ship directly above the damaged avgas tank (who’s roof was formed by the floor of said elevator’s well.) The Taiho was equipped with fireproof curtains around both elevators; putting those into use would’ve sealed off the fumes from spreading too far into the rest of the hangar as well. 

An American damcon crew would’ve known not to make the fatal error of turning on the ship’s ventilation systems full-blast, of course - but even without that, Taiho’s death was coming sooner or later without the Admiral’s cooperation in stopping flight ops. He could have employed Taiho’s lower-deck CO2 flooding system, which would’ve flooded the floor of the forward elevator with CO2 as well (and since CO2 is heavier than air, it would’ve sunk deeper into the actual damaged void spaces, too.) That’d require ceasing operations on the lower hangar deck of course, taking aircraft down there out of the fight, but most of his attack planes (which were stored on that deck) had already been launched by then - three full deck cycles worth. This, also, was not done. 

Maybe an American damcon crew could’ve impressed upon Admiral Ozawa the seriousness of the danger, gaining the cessation of flight ops required to ventilate the forward elevator well, employ the CO2 flooding system in the lower hangar, and other such measures. If they could, the ship would most certainly have survived her torpedo hit.
