일지매 - Iljimae - Whumplist - 🇰🇷
Whumpee: 이겸 (Lee Gyeom)/용이 (Yong-I) played by 이준기 (Lee Joon Gi)
Synopsis: Set in 1633 Joseon, a young Lee Gyeom watches as his father is murdered. He has to deny his relationship to his mother and loses his memory due to shock. He is ultimately adopted by an ex-thief (now lock maker) and his wife. After getting his memories back and watching a loved one die unjustly, he vowed to avenge them by becoming Iljimae. He breaks into homes of noblemen and officials for answers, taking valuables while there and giving them to poor villagers, making him a hero to the people. Will the king allow this?

Even with the change in platform, change in director, and recasting of two of the main characters, I am HERE for season 2!!! I've actually been blown away Lee Joon Gi's characterization of the twins. I am looking forward to how they wrap up the story.

Book Review: Everyday Life in Joseon-Era Korea
Everyday Life in Joseon-Era Korea: Economy and Society, edited by Michael D. Shin. I would rate this collection of essays by the Organization of Korean Historians as a solid 4.5 of 5 stars. With the caveat that if you’re not interested in this specific time period, this may not have anything of note for you. On the other hand, if you’re intrigued at the idea of seeing the entire schedule of a premodern agricultural year laid out, or takes on salt-making, trade guilds, and tax evasion, this will have interesting nuggets of info even if you couldn’t care less about Joseon or fantasy/historical dramas set there.
I specifically recc’ the salt chapter if you’ve read up on how salt was made in premodern Europe, China, or Japan. The Korean method has some intriguing differences. You’ve heard of sowing the ground with salt to destroy enemy territory? Korean salt-making also involves plowing ground to get salt. After you’ve concentrated some brine and then spread it over the low ground by the sea to dry some more....
Which is to say that this book has details. Lots of details, by people doing their best to do a deep dive into a place, time, or subject and give you an idea what was happening and why. These are my favorite kinds of nonfiction books. See Barry Cunliffe’s On the Ocean, or Rattlesnake: Portrait of a Predator by Manny Rubio. Books that give me enough information, enough details, that I can picture the place, process, or creatures - especially books that point toward sources to learn even more - are very good books.
Also books that show that, no matter the time, place, or culture, humans are gonna human. Yangban can avoid military conscription? I’m going to make sure someone in the family passes the official exams - and failing that, I’m going to fake me a genealogy. Translators are the only people who get to trade with China and Japan? Gee, what job am I going to try to get into? Ban drinking liquor? It’s medicinal, see all the herbs?
(This last did not always work. King Sejong refused even those when he needed medicine, because there was a ban. They ended up treating him with saltwater instead. No details on the effect.)
If you like the costumes and splendor of Korean historical dramas, this book gives you some idea of what was going behind the scenes, and what you could use to build on to make a story in this setting as plausible as possible. No folklore, no magic - those you’ll need to look up other places. But if you want to know, for example, where a character banished into exile would go, and how, and how injured they’d be before they even start the journey (exile was a legal punishment that involved a severe beating first), this book will give you solid ground to stand on.
All in all, if you loved Iljimae or The Scholar Who Walks the Night, and you want to know more - check it out. It’s not cheap, but if you’ve got a library with good interlibrary loan programs, look for it!

Lee Joon Gi is currently starring in the second season of Arthdal Chronicles, an epic fantasy drama that depicts the mythical ancient land of Arth and its inhabitants. Lee Joon Gi was born in Busan, South Korea on April 17, 1982. He moved to Seoul after high school to pursue his dream of becoming an actor, and started his career as a model and a minor actor in dramas and films. He rose to fame in 2005 with his first leading role in the film The King and the Clown, where he played Gong Gil, an effeminate clown who catches the eye of the tyrannical king. The film was a critical and commercial success, breaking box office records and earning Lee numerous awards and recognition.
Lee Joon Gi then starred in the hit romantic comedy drama My Girl, which further boosted his popularity and established him as a Hallyu star. He continued to impress viewers with his diverse roles in historical dramas such as Iljimae, Arang and the Magistrate, Scholar Who Walks the Night, Scarlet Heart Ryeo, and action thrillers such as Time Between Dog and Wolf, Two Weeks, Lawless Lawyer, Criminal Minds, Flower of Evil, and more.

What is Arthdal Chronicles about?

Arthdal Chronicles is a fantasy drama that tells the story of the mythical land of Arth, where different kingdoms and tribes coexist. The drama explores the themes of power, love, identity, and destiny through the lives of its main characters.
The first season of Arthdal Chronicles consisted of three parts: The Children of Prophecy, The Sky Turning Inside Out Rising Land, and The Prelude to All Legends. It followed the journey of Eun Seom (Song Joong Ki), an Igutu who was born with a blue star-shaped mark on his hand. He was prophesied to bring disaster to Arthdal, the capital city of the Arthdal Union. He grew up among the Wahan tribe, a peaceful clan that lived in harmony with nature. He met Tan Ya (Kim Ji Won), a girl who had a similar mark on her hand and was destined to become the high priestess of the Wahan tribe.

Meanwhile, Ta Gon (Jang Dong Gun) was the ambitious leader of the Saenyeok tribe, a powerful clan that conquered other tribes with their superior weapons and skills. He was also born with a mark on his hand, but he hid it from others. He had a vision of becoming the first king of Arthdal. He was aided by Tae Al Ha (Kim Ok Bin), a brilliant woman who was the daughter of the head of the Hae tribe, a wealthy clan that controlled trade and technology in Arthdal.
The first season depicted how Eun Seom’s fate intertwined with Ta Gon’s ambition, as well as how Tan Ya’s destiny affected Tae Al Ha’s plans. The season ended with several cliffhangers: Eun Seom escaped from slavery and became the leader of the Ago tribe; Tan Ya became the high priestess of Arthdal; Ta Gon declared himself as king; Tae Al Ha gave birth to Ta Gon’s son; Sa Ya (also played by Song Joong Ki), Eun Seom’s twin brother who was separated at birth, woke up from his coma; and Cha Eun (Choo Ja Hyun), a Neanderthal woman who raised Eun Seom and Sa Ya, revealed herself to be alive.
What can we expect from Arthdal Chronicles 2?

Arthdal Chronicles 2 is set approximately a decade after Season 1. It will continue to explore the conflicts and relationships among the four main characters: Eun Seom, Tan Ya, Ta Gon, and Tae Al Ha. However, the roles of Eun Seom and Tan Ya have been recast to reflect the time jump. Lee Joon Gi and Shin Se Kyung will take over the roles from Song Joong Ki and Kim Ji Won respectively.
According to the official synopsis, Arthdal Chronicles 2 will depict the following events:
- Eun Seom, who united the Ago tribes and became a powerful rebel, will face a new enemy and a new challenge.
- Tan Ya, who became the high priestess of Arthdal, will struggle to protect her people and her love from the tyranny of Ta Gon.
- Ta Gon, who became the first king of Arthdal, will face a crisis that threatens his throne and his life.
- Tae Al Ha, who became the queen of Arthdal, will scheme to secure her son’s future and her own ambition.

The second season will also introduce new characters and subplots, such as:
- The Ikomahis, a mysterious group of Igutus who have a connection to Sa Ya’s past.
- The Neanthals, the ancient race that was nearly wiped out by humans and who have a special bond with Eun Seom and Sa Ya.
- The Asa clan, the clan that worships the god Asa Sin and has a rivalry with the Hae clan.
- The Momo tribe, the tribe that lives in harmony with animals and has a unique culture.

When and where can we watch Arthdal Chronicles 2?

Arthdal Chronicles 2 is scheduled to premiere in September 2023 on tvN in South Korea. It will also be available for streaming on Netflix in various regions. The second season will consist of 12 episodes, which will be divided into two parts: The Sword of Aramun and The Land of Chaos.
The first part, The Sword of Aramun, will focus on Eun Seom’s journey as he leads the Ago tribe in a war against Arthdal. The second part, The Land of Chaos, will focus on Tan Ya’s journey as she tries to stop a prophecy that foretells the end of the world.

Do you like triumph of evil in your kdramas? A small rec list for the pessimist in you
If, like me, you got into kdramas way back when or like older kdramas, tragic endings are not a particular surprise - endings where one or both members of the OTP die were pretty common and even unsettling endings that remind you of the world being rather unjust (Bad Guys) also happen.
But I am talking about something more than that - an ending that really socks it to you, by making you feel the villains won, it was all in vain. I confess when well-done, I love the bleakness of that type of ending. So here are my five favorites for this sort of thing:
Hong Gil Dong (2008)
This story of a rebel fighting to overthrow the mad tyrant and bring justice to the people has the most thoroughly bad ending on the list. Who dies? EVERYONE EXCEPT THE BAD GUYS! I don't mean the OTP, I don't mean your fave secondaries, I mean everyone. The sheer realistic bleakness of the ending is breath-taking. Gil Dong, his OTP Yi Nok and the rest of the rebels are murdered by the forces of the king they put on the throne. The last shot of the story proper is them standing watching a shower of arrows coming towards them, staring at their death. The only survivors are the King and the secondary girl and both are monsters. The king is the man they put on the throne with so much effort but who cannot allow them to live because what they want is not to replace a bad absolute ruler with a different one (that he may have coped with) but to replace the system itself - to hold the king accountable, and he cannot have that. In the end, a mad tyrant has been replaced with a sane tyrant and the class system and the injustices of that society that wrecked Hil Dong, Yi Nok and the rest continue unabated. And secondary girl betrays Gil Dong because - for all her sort of crush - she never truly saw him as human, just a fancy peasant toy that should be thrown away and punished for not behaving as he ought. In the end, the good guys, the heroes, who fought so hard are killed and it's not easy acceptance for them either (there is a scene where Gil Dong, knowing they are all dead once spring comes, admits to Yi Nok how terrified of death he is that has haunted me for a decade plus) and the monsters continue on happily. Sure, the people recite stories and new fighters will rise in their place but it's very much of a "no happy ending in our lifetime" message.
At the time this drama came out, the Hong Sisters were known for their romcoms and this started out pretty goofy - watching it live as it got darker and darker was a hell of a trip and the ending made the fandom insane. But the more I thought about it, the more I loved it, the more fitting it seemed. I love all the other takes on rebels against the crown a la various other HGD and Iljimae adaptations but this one has, to me, by far the most fitting ending.
IRIS (2009)
Talk about bleak. This drama starts as your standard if high quality actioner about competent glam agents of a secret CIA type agency. And then it all goes to hell in a handbasket for our mains as it turns out a secret evil organization is the one that's pulling the strings, and our protagonist Kim Hyun Jun (played by Lee Byung Hun in my favorite of all of his performances) is sacrificed for complicated reasons that are only gradually revealed and begins his descent into hell. He starts the story as a competent, cocky sweetheart and transforms into a PTSDing shaking hands wreck. And you watch him fight so hard - fight through all the torments inflicted, fight to protect his loved ones and to keep his sanity, and fight to take the evil org down. You watch him slowly rebuild himself, and to slowly find happiness again with the woman he's loved all this time, Choi Seung Hee (played by Kim Tae Hee in my fave of her performances, who has unknowing ties to the org) and to fight over the org and inflict damage on it.
And then we get that ending, as he's finally found some peace and safety, and he's driving to propose to Seung Hee and as he sees her, he's shot in the head, point blank and he lies there, dying, seeing her but not able to reach her, tears falling out of his eyes as she waits oblivious for a man who will never come and it's made so clear that the org goes on, that nothing has been defeated and that it has all been for nothing - he's been killed as a punishment to him but also as a message to Seung Hee that nobody ever escapes - for her to find his body and realize it was all for naught. And it is also made clear that there was NOTHING he could have ever done to avoid this fate except if his parents made different choices before he was born (!!!) Talk about bleak. I sobbed for hours.
Ja Myung Go (2009)
I've just posted about this one so I am not gonna re-do the comments but yeah, it ends with the OTP death, the kingdom destroyed and the one winner is King Daemushin, the bad guy. The God of Battles wins again. Sure he lost a son but he's got other sons. Worth it, would think the old monster.
My Country: the New Age (2019)
The rest of the dramas on this list are older. This one is not. Our two main protagonists die in the end but that is not what makes it so bleak - what makes it so bleak is that nothing of what they wanted came to pass. In a way, it's a bit of a Hong Gil Dong redux situation - there is a new ruler on the throne but he's not any better than the old ones and he's cleaning up the people who put him on the throne. Hwi especially fought so hard for a place and then just to have some peace and he gets neither, the man he fought so hard to put on the throne being his murderer.
What Happened in Bali (2004)
Ooof, this drama! We have four main characters and at the end, two of them are dead, shot by the third one who turns the gun on himself. The only survivor is the ice cold secondary girl who would probably not pause sipping her morning coffee when hearing the news.
This is a story of people damaged and ruined by a bunch of monsters who suppress any hope and anything good and cause more and more damage - we watch the three mains claw at others and at themselves hoping for happiness and connection and love and it all gets dismantled and set on fire repeatedly and in the worst way. It's perhaps the starkest with Jo In Sung's Jung Jae Min - who you watch taken apart and driven to extremity slowly and gradually over the course of the drama. And his monstrous family ends up triumphant at the end - even in death and murder he was not monstrous enough for them to fit in - and now they will continue their lives.
PS The scene where he shoots Ha Ji Won's character right as she's just finishes telling So Ji Sub she loves JIS and wants to go back to him and she tells him "I love you" for the first time ever as she lies dying - that lives in my head rent free forever.
