(by the way, I’m thinking about sending you such long texts with questions (because I have a lot of them!!) once one or two weeks, if you don’t mind. . . . . . .you don't mind..??? (god, I hope you don’t get tired of me..!) I'm so sorry, please, I'm just very interested!! *qwq*)

ok, let's start with the sweetest part, prelude. ACTUALLY, I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT YOU REPLY SO QUICKLY, GOD, NOT PASSED A FEW HOURS!!!!!! I THOUGHT YOU HAD TOO MANY QUESTIONS SO I DID NOT EXPECT A SO SOON REPLY!!

I’ll remind you once again how much I adore your work (after all, you deserve it!!), and I’ll also say that I specifically shouldn’t talk about posts tagged with the adm, because I’ve read your tumblr and twitter in its entirety several times, I even have a separate album in my gallery with answers that particularly interested me, there are several hundred screenshots there and I don’t regret anything! (sorry if my hyperfixation may be intimidating!!)

1. my wife doesn’t have a tumblr, but her suggestion interested me and can be seen in the first two screenshots(the translation sounds like: “after the release of “red hour” I have an assumption that andrey is more... athletic than misha. either this is because of ferry’s drawing style, or he really has such wide shoulders")so now we are interested to know about the physique of your characters!! maybe some of them are thin, or vice versa, a little overweight. and what about physical training? did you have any headcanons for this??? ( by the way, when I ask about “characters” I mean not only misha and andrey, but also europe and maya, because they are also worthy of attention <зз)

2. what about the abbreviation "dyusha" for andrey? in russian it is... not used very often, but still, it sounds very cute. so it would be interesting to know how you would feel about this? 3. I also want to hear about the names of the characters!! how did you choose them? I mean........ how did it happen that from ☺europa☺ you switched to 👹MiKhAiL👹?? (I'M SO SORRY, BUT MISHA'S FULL NAME SOUNDS SOMETHING THREATENING. MY UNCLE'S DOG HAS THE SAME NAME EHE- *ᕕ(ಥ▽ಥ)ᕗ*)

4. and lastly, let's return to my wife for another moment. she suggested that andrey was now also in a time loop. what do you say about that? and also in enigma, she noticed that misha seemed to be addressing the second person in the lines: "and if you wanted to be anything more than just free" and "you’ve seen a hundred lies I see that all the time". is this second person a viewer? or maybe one of the previously mentioned characters??

the last photo, by the way, is one of the sketches that I found so far in my gallery! ^^

initially it was planned to attach two sketches, but andrey turned out TOO bad, I’m ashamed to show him. someday I'll redraw it into something normal.... maybe. but! I really like the pic with misha and the wolf(I hope this is the wolf you were talking about lol. google didn’t show me anything else, and I’ve never been to ikea myself, ehe...)

okay im gonna try and answer everything here in a coherent way so sorry if nothing makes sense

im just fine with lotes of questions :) answering asks and responding to comments is one of my favorite things ever and i brings a verry big smile to my face

on andrei: i consider him to be a skinny little gut but not exactly unathletic, and in addition i think he would have basic combat training and probably be good with firearms. misha is probably a very average bodytype, nothing special, not particularly athletic.

i do not speak russian (though ferry has recently encouraged me to learn so maybe in like four years ill be able to form a sentence) so i dont know anything about the short forms so you can do whatever you want. if you coin it and peoples tart calling him that i will not stop it from happening

i do not name my characters, i usually let me friends name them (i think that the only one i named was europa and his partner). going forward maybe ill try to make it more cohesive

the time loop idea im seeing thrown around alot is really cool and while i havent particularly wrote any of my songs about that in general i see it fitting into the loose narrative i have going on. also in enigma misha is definitely talking to andrei whenever he says the word "you" but it could also be to the listener because the entire theme of enigma is 4th wall breaking and meta shenanigans like that

my journey in DST modding: day 5

the "Tale of Tails" continues. i decided to bite the bullet and just redraw Zakaria's tail to look exactly like the template's so the animation wouldnt break. and it looked terrible. i tweaked it a little so it didnt look as bad but it's still fucking weird.

i also remade the braids to look significantly shorter, but it also looks weird.

this is how she looks with the "proper" pivot points (not counting the layer thing):

as you can see, everything is all over the place, i still havent figured out HOW to change the layer hierarchy OR the pivot placement in a way that matters.

im kinda reaching my breaking point tbh.

i did some other stuff i didnt care to screenshot, like reposition the head a little higher (almost unnoticeable) along with the face, redid some facial expressions and made a horn-less version of the head so it didnt clash with the hats. does it make physical sense? not really, nobody takes their horns off so they can wear a hat, but im definitely not gonna bother coding her to "be unable to wear hats" or something like that.

i added her name in gold to the character page, it looked really good but suddenly it stopped showing up (i now know it's the autocompiler's fault, at least it's fixable)

this fucking tail is getting on my nerves. i didnt wanna resort to this, but i guess im just gonna draw it on the tail-0 file and leave it as a single piece. it was worth the try, i guess.

but the "Tale of Tails" is not over!!!! i still have to fix the back view. i spent some more time searching in the Klei forums and while some posts were promising, most of them were just people with the same problem as me and no answer.

also, the braids count as pigtails i guess? theyre on the pigtail layer.

now, i found someone who said the only way to change layers is changing the animation itself. i have no idea how to do that but let's keep going i guess.

i sent the links i found to my friend in hopes that he can decode what the posters are saying cause my brain's already turned into a pile of goo.

probably the last thing i'll do for the day: redraw the tail, then take a textured brush and make the outlines of all the parts significantly thicker so she doesnt get swallowed by the environment.

so! end of the post, this is where im gonna stop. most of the art issues are fixed, i probably wont have to think about it two days from now.

the DSMP Lost Boys AU. GOD i was on some shit when i was thinking abt that. it was literally so perfect. i still have the other half of the references buried somewhere deep in my wip folder but i just. never finished it. i was probably never gonna write an actual fic for it but god did i want to do more screenshot redraws . it was so perfect. i still think abt it sometimes when i watch lost boys like. damn .... sam is so tommy coded . i love you annoying little brothers

ANOTHER dsmp one: vengeful spirit. god. fuck . where do i even start. vengeful spirit was my baby i cared about it so much. it was my ghostbur-centric character study fic series where after cwilbur was revived, ghostbur fought his way out of limbo kicking and screaming and then they had to deal with the consequences of both existing in the living world at the same time. very heart player core. something something you hate yourself so much but now there are two of you and youre different people but also youre the same guy and you hate that your brother trusts the dead fish eyes version of you more than the living breathing one. aka ghostbur gets to be angry because i really just wanted to see him snap and punch something. unfortunately the first fic totally flopped and i had nobody to bounce ideas off of so i was the only person in the world to care about vengeful spirit. i had like 12 oneshots planned out and they were each titled with song lyrics from a song in the playlist (which still exists btw) and i made a layout and everything. A LAYOUT. i never outline things dude thats how u KNOW i went hard for this one. another factor in its death tho is i started writing it like.. right after the cwilbur revival when there was a huge lull in lore streams and i was trying to fill in the blanks. but because i am a slow writer eventually canon surpassed me and i was like "hm this is too divergent now and since i am the only one who is going to read this it will simply live in my brain forever" . also i think my time for writing dsmp is way past me now. sad! oh well theres other fandoms.

third one is NOT dsmp related but it IS general minecraft related. fuck dude i have so many ideas about minecraft worldbuilding. its such a perfect game to write about. i have so many minecraft ocs that have super complex lore that will probably never see the light of day bc im like. how the hell do i convey this information without actually showing people my minecraft world. the intricacies. there are so many. i cannot play this game normally i have to make a story every single time. EVEN WHEN im not actually setting out to make a story. even when im just like "hm yeah this is gonna be a casual world im not gonna take it too seriously" and then suddenly ive rebuilt an entire village to protect it from raids and all the villagers have names and im attached. sigh. i think about minecraft religion and also the magic system and how the world works and how mobs interact with each other and . man . theres so much. does anyone want to play miencraft with me i prommy i wont go insane on you

alr since this blog is 100% Inactive inactive now im gonna post (attempts at) tutorials of how i did my edits. pass down the torch to all of you people who i guess don’t have the xkit timestamp extension. you can use pretty much any program that supports layers and brushes w/o antialiasing; i use medibang paint. if you’re real dedicated you could probably manage to use a program without layers, but the aliasing is an absolute must. it just looks cheap and shitty with antialiasing instead of the authentic pixellated crunch of homestuck’s style.

part 1 of ?: PANEL EDITS TUTORIAL

so the first thing you wanna do is grab the panel you want to use. i generally use vast error panels because finding workable homestuck panels takes longer. in my example ill be using this panel from right before i just outright stopped trying to stay caught up w vast error

to make an edit of my fantroll marina halcyn! now. look at all that god damn static. that would be really really inconvenient to erase out OR you could take the easy route and just open up another layer and use the fill tool to completely duplicate the parts you want from the original image and then delete the first layer. that might be a lil obvious to some of you but it took me a while to catch on to so in the tutorial it goes. medibang paint has a transparent fill tool that’s very useful if the character’s design is more complicated than the background, though- e.g if it’s solid black or if the character’s immediate surroundings are all pretty solid colored so you can just regular erase the rest of it, or if you just don’t want to fucking fill 100 little pixels individually.

if all you want to do is make transparents, then stop here! if not, proceed onwards. with your beautiful new transparent image, the next thing i do is remove all identifying details. just blandify the SHIT out of them. erase loose clothing, get rid of any details i don’t want to keep, smooth down the hair, etc. this is why i work with transparents, also. makes it a lot easier.

next step is to open up a second layer to draw over what you’ve got. you need the second layer because you want to be able to check your edits over the original to make sure it looks okay. i cannot give you the ability to draw clothes or hair. just reference the style you’re trying to replicate and it should be fine; stick to a relatively limited palette; the fill tool is your best friend.

so, by this point, the edit looks like this:

very much half-baked, but definitely coming together, yeah? open up another layer if you’re using something with layers. you can finish an edit in three main steps- the third is for details and anything that goes over the initial redraw layer (bangs, jewelry, horns, just for some examples), in a separate layer to make it easier to erase if it looks wonky. think of this as the refining stage, too, because i usually make small adjustments to the previous two layers here as well. there is literally not that much to it but it’s pretty important because with those extra touchups that screenshot becomes this

and that’s it. you’re done. three steps and you have a beaaautiful edit of your fantroll / kin timeline / self ship / idea you thought would be cool. like anything it does take practice for them to turn out good but panel edits dont exactly demand a fathomless amount of time and slash or effort.

Well. How did I study?? You’re gonna hate it, but there’s literally no other way around it.

HEAR ME OUT: That’s just how learning works. That’s how learning any style ever works. If you’re trying to draw in a particular art style, you have to learn how it’s drawn. And the only way really understand to do that, is by trying to recreate it almost exactly. WHICH YEAH, this is an internet space, once you say the work “copy” next to art suddenly you have no skill or are doing something inherently immoral just on principle. Which is just a really bad faith read. It’s a lot like “master studies” in art classes, where students have to recreate the same drawing/work from some previous artist and try to get it as close as possible to the original. Which seems dumb at first, but it’s not without a point- y’know?

As a wack teenager, I used to practice trying to “master” the look of the zexal style by drawing on paper a loooot. At the time I didn’t know how to draw digitally (i didn’t have access to a lot of things). Zexal model sheets were rare if almost nonexistent, so I could only use the anime. I must’ve did a decent enough job since to this day my old art floats around with no one realizing that some idiot teenager drew them in her room. I just really wanted to learn it for some reason. Honestly, I blocked out most of my life from that era, so I can barely remember my own reasoning.

So I think I’d suggest, at least since the resources are much more readily available now, to refer to the model sheets and probably try redrawing what you see in those. I don’t have the old sketches anymore, but back then on my own time, I’d try recreating stuff like this as I saw it:

Or, HECK!!! If there’s an art style from particular episodes you like a lot, try referring to those and use that. There’s a ton of elements in the model sheets I don’t much care for, or elements applied by certain animation directors I like more than others that I’ll incorporate into my own work. So in the end you kind of do learn more about your own style and tastes. BUT, I personally wouldn’t jump straight into this right away. Maybe just keep it in mind until u get comfier.

THIS post that illustrates what I mean visually in regards to different directors and their styles a little better lmao. They’re all “on model” but u can tell them apart despite using the same “style.”

SCREENSHOT REDRAWS are a more fun kind of practice!! When I was in the more active learning stage I’d often try redrawing my favorite shots on paper and try to get as close as feasibly possible. I only did that because I wanted to learn it.

Nowadays, I just target weirder looking shots because. Lmao. You know 😩 after years of learning what I like in the style … … it’s a fun self challenge

Screenshot redraws are also just good practice for me even when I’m just goofing. Because when I’m not actively practicing, my muscle memory starts to fail me.

Or, if you aren’t directly recreating an existing image and still want to practice, I’d suggest keeping the model sheets (or whatever influence u refer to) with you and try drawing within the realms set up. References are your friends and wanna help u. Even the best homies out there will use them, plz don’t undersell them. You aren’t any better or worse for using them 😭

AFTER A GOOD WHILE OF DOING THAT SORT OF THING you’ll probably get a feel for it a lot more. Then, as per how art works, the style will shift more into your own take on it, and then you can just do whatever you want and take your personal liberties as u see fit

OH RIGHT, DIGITAL OR TRADITIONAL??? …Idk. When i was learning i always drew on paper (mostly due to circumstance). It varies from person to person on which is more “effective,” but I don’t think it ultimately matters lol
