I spent last couple of weekends taking part in a study to develop growing Soloss, an initiative I was part of as a songwriter, that matches artists with people experiencing grief and loss. Last week was at Co*Lab. This time, we were at Yorath House - my first time there. I've been to Buena Vista Park countless times and seen the house, but have never been inside. I also had the chance to meet in person for the first time with one of the people who I worked with, writing a song about his life. During my time as a Losstender we had to meet over Zoom due to the pandemic. Stopping groundhog day in disability services
Some of the team attended the NZ Disability Support Network conference last week and heard about Kudoz, a new online learning and volunteer platform.
Listen to Dr Sarah Schulman, CEO of Inwithforward, talk on Radio New Zealand’s Nine to Noon programme about working with a group of New Zealanders to establish Kudoz NZ.

Dropped by Knowsy Fest this afternoon on Alberta Avenue to meet my friends in person from @inwithforward who I worked with as a Losstender for @soloss.ca. Knowsy Fest featured stories from people in the 118 Avenue area who shared with other local folks, and visitors had the chance to engage with the stories and share their reactions. #yeg #yegdt #yegstories #yegarts #storytelling #edmonton #alberta #innercity #northside (at Pe Metawe Games) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVbfqu2vSnL/?utm_medium=tumblr

@madmanmundt once dubbed me a flâneuse, and writes about me at least once a year to help me keep the reputation. Seriously, this is an article about my recent role as a Losstender with Soloss.ca, and my EP that’s dropping tomorrow. @soloss.ca @reachyeg @inwithforward #yeg #yegmusic #yegmusician #edmontonmusic #folkmusic #countrymusic #gospel #womenmusicians https://www.instagram.com/p/COiMCsSgjMy/?igshid=1nb1xez0kndva

I've been on an amazing adventure for the past couple of months. During March and April, I took part in a program called "Soloss," which was developed by Vancouver social agency InWithForward. The organization is prototyping the "Losstender" position in Edmonton in cooperation with REACH Edmonton. "Losstenders" are constellation of folks who open up spaces for moments of grief to also be moments for connection. Basically, we are artists who sat with and spoke to "Sharers" who told us their stories of life and loss. Thought of another way, a "Losstender" is kind of like the friendly bartender to whom people bare their souls. Three unique people chose to share their stories with me. In return, I created a song for each of them as a lasting artifact of our encounters and to help them on their healing journeys. I am excited for you to "meet" the three people I connected with through my forthcoming EP "Losstending," which I will be releasing on Bandcamp on May 7. Find out more about Soloss at soloss.ca and you can visit and follow my Bandcamp at paulaevekirman.bandcamp.com @soloss.ca @reachyeg @inwithforward #yeg #yegdt #yegmusic #edmonton #losstenders #solossyeg #grief #loss #healing #music #folk #country #gospel #acoustic #womenmusicians #jewishmusicians #edmontonmusic https://www.instagram.com/p/CN-PMO2gwNU/?igshid=mzvhqmsdr4b7

I’m part of a constellation of artists who are opening up spaces for moments of grief to also be moments of connection. The “losstender” prototype is being introduced in #yeg in the #Belvedere neighbourhood by Vancouver organization InWithForward with support from @reachyeg. Here’s my bio at soloss.ca/paula Posted @withregram • @soloss.ca Meet Paula!! Music is my passion and my source of comfort and healing, both through listening and composing. I was raised on 60s folk music, and often write about social and political issues. I also write about loss, particularly about death and the end of relationships. I often lean into my songwriting to unpack complex emotions about situations. My songs are very much lyric based. I received First Prize in the 2016 Edmonton Inner City Poetry Contest and was a finalist in the 2017 International Songwriting Competition for my song “Summer,” which is about a (fictional) woman’s journey into homelessness.
In my professional life, I am a writer, photographer, filmmaker, musician, and community organizer. I edit community publications and work with numerous non-profit groups as a communications and media consultant. I’ve gotten a few awards for my work and art, including the Award of Merit for Advocacy of Social Justice from the Edmonton Social Planning Council, The Salvos Prelorentzos Peace Award from Project Ploughshares Edmonton, and the Human Rights Champion Award from the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights for being a pioneering media artist and community organizer. https://www.soloss.ca/paula #yegdt #losstender #solossyeg https://www.instagram.com/p/CMw9iTYBeAL/?igshid=1wnvbu0qxwdsh
