nobody asked lol but here is some more sailing yacht commentary from the scene of max and daniel on the bridge:

It’s quiet on the bridge, just the soft bloop of the radar keeping Max company. I like "soft bloop" lol. Bloopbloopfish. Alex had been surprised when he’d offered to take the night shift on anchor watch for this charter, but he hadn’t complained.

When he was younger, Max’s bedroom walls were covered with maps of the world, navigation charts. North Sea, Mediterranean, Ionian, Adriatic. He studied them all, learned them by heart. Something I like about writing AUs is trying to work in versions of canon characterisation; baby flags of the world enthusiast Max is very dear to me so it's just expanding that into his sailing backstory. Also I like the Mediterranean/Ionian sea joke from the earlier hot tub scene so this is reinforcing that -- Max knows the seas!

There are copies of the same maps and charts stored here; he pulls some out to look at now. It’s a still night; he can take five minutes without the anchors tangling and catching.

We can go here, he used to tell Victoria. Here. Sometimes if it was a bad night he’d let her choose, helping her trace the coastline with her finger, then they’d try and chart a course. Trying to allude to bad dad stuff without being too explicit about what actually went down that pushed Max off the racing track into sailing but like, you get it hopefully. Also I wish there was a bit more Victoria stuff in this story because it's maybe slightly abrupt when he calls her later, IDK. Anyway, sailing as an escape etc.

Maybe Daniel has the right idea, saving for his own boat. If Max had his own boat, he could go wherever he wanted and never have to worry about charters, or cameras, or stupid guests. By this point in the story Max is So miserable about the cameras and is starting to feel bad about stuff he can normally put up with, like charter nonsense and shitty guests. By the end of the fic his focus will have shifted entirely to Daniel rather than the yacht stuff and this is just about the tipping point where he's ~torn between the two. He could just sail. He could take Victoria to some of the places they used to dream about, Madagascar or Ibiza or Antigua. Max thinks for one glowing moment about showing Daniel Zeeland and Waddenzee, the places he learned to sail, and then he remembers, shoves the thought away. I do think there's something lovely about showing people you care about the places you grew up, like showing them your baby pictures or something. Just wanting to be known.

He puts the maps back where he found them, goes back to his screens.

Daniel comes up to the bridge after his shift. He drops down on the couch behind Max’s chair.

“What’s up?”

“Not much,” Max says. He keeps his eyes fixed on the radar.

Daniel sighs. “Could you look at me?”

Reluctantly, Max swivels round to face him. There’s a camera operator hovering in the doorway to the saloon; he must have followed Daniel up here. Max just acutely aware of how they're being watched all the time.

“Max, what’s going on?” Daniel says. “I’ve barely seen you.”

Max says, “I’m working, mate,” and Daniel says, too earnest, “Are we okay?”

“We’re fine,” Max says, “I’m sorry for being weird,” and Daniel sort of waves him off.

“Is this about the other night?” he says, dropping his voice a little. “It was good, right? I thought it was good.” It Was good.

Max bites his lip, hard. “Can we talk about this later,” he gets out.

“I’ll be asleep later,” Daniel says, smiling and leaning further forward. “Max, you’re gonna hurt my feelings.” Daniel is trying to be charming here but he is also like wildly sincere.

“Come on,” Max says, because it isn’t fair.

“What?”

“You are the one who said,” Max says. “That we shouldn’t, that it was a bad idea.”

“Oh, shit,” says Daniel. “Max, no, I just meant – the cameras.” Extremely guilty of leaning on misunderstanding here instead of actual conflict but in my defence they like each other So much.

He gestures up at the ceiling, to where the little camera would be in their cabin. “You always say that you’d never want to do that stuff on camera, and like, I don’t either. In general, though? If we weren’t on the world’s premiere yachting-based reality show?” He smiles, which makes Max look helplessly at his mouth. “Kissing you was actually one of my better ideas. Real galaxy brain shit.” I'm not sure about galaxy brain! Like it feels too online for Daniel? But I couldn't think of anything better.

“Oh,” says Max.

“Yeah,” says Daniel, “it’s been known to happen,” and now Max shifts forward in his chair, says, “So –”

“Max,” Daniel says, everything about him warm, and Max thinks – he thinks Daniel’s going to kiss him again. This is the point at which Daniel decides he needs to see Max in the hotel after the charter without the cameras. Daniel looks at him and Max looks back, and when the moment’s stretched so long Max thinks he’s going to die lol drama queen Daniel claps his hands on his thighs and stands up. “Alright,” he says. “Cool. Look after my anchors, please,” and then he’s gone, ducking down the crew stairs. I like "look after my anchors." Something something anchors and security and home. Daniel's the whole boat!

Max watches him go, heart racing, and when he swings his chair back around to check the radar the camera operator gives him a discreet thumbs up. Is this realistic? No, but at this point the entire production crew are Maxiel shippers and this camera guy has put a lot of money in the pool.
