WHAT IF?
What if Khushi was tortured by Arnav’s accusation that he had hurt her, and that Shyam is crossing all boundaries - to the extent that she feels that she must tell Shyam that it’s enough and he should tell the truth to Arnav about himself.
That Shyam must confess who and what he is!
And to her horror instead of Shyam being angry he smiles back and says softly “Oh, so you know why Arnav married you,”
And Khushi is frozen. Because Shyam knows why Arnav married her? He knows the answer to the question that haunted her for months?
And Shyam gives a sly smile, knowing he’s about to ruin Khushi’s life. And with deep satisfaction Shyam tells Khushi the truth.
The truth Khushi couldn’t even imagine or believe.
The truth which makes Khushi run away, cry, and demand Arnav he tell her why he married her.
So what if instead of the stupid Lavanya and Arnav are planning to kill Khushi which leads to the revelation we have a twist of what happened on the marriage night.
Tumblr media
Shyam learns Arnav knows a half truth, and feeds him a lie.
Tumblr media
And now Shyam learns Khushi doesn’t know the truth at all, and feeds her the truth.
And he laughs at her face that Arnav would believe him - Shyam of all people - about Khushi in a second but not Khushi.
And in both situations Arnav and Khushi are broken, and Shyam is victorious in the end.

IPKKND had an excellent OST and there are so many tracks that will forever be imbued with Arshi vibes for me (Arziyaan, Teri Meri); and I can never listen to Salaam-E-Ishq title track without immediately remembering Lavanya Kashyap's sad eyes and brave smile!
This song can never be a happy love song for me ever again, for me its a one sided love break up song 😢

IPKKND LIVE BLOG SEASON - 1 [EPI - 3]
Cooommmeee onnnnn. Let'zzz beegggiiiinnnn.
Satvik Mishthaann Bhandaar. Khushi opens the cylinder's regulator's knob. Picks up the oil cannister, with tears glistening in her eyes.
Khushi's flashbacks of the lines that broke her heart :
i) "Mat kaho hume Amma." (Don't call me your mom.)
ii) "Payal iski sagi behen hoti tabahu aisi harkat karat?" (Had Payal been her real (blood-related) sister then would she do something like that ?")
iii) "Aaj tum saabit kar dee ho ki tum humra khoon naahi ho." (Today you have proved that you don't consider us as your own.)
iv) "Tum jaisi ladkiyon ka kya hai, ek jayega dusra phasaa lena." (This should not be a problem for girls like you, if one slips away then trap another.)
3. ANDDDDD- she lights the gas and makes jalebis. As we all get to know that stress eating and stress cooking are her outlets.
4. Sun comes up and we are in the next day. Hii Bitwa. Good morning.
5. We see Arnav, again, drowned in the horrors of his past. The head of his PR team comes and informs about the damage control but also tells his boss about his suspicions that some media people might still have managed to get hold on a few photos and videos.
6. But Bitwa is in no mood to listen. He gives him a threat, straight, of getting black-listed from the corporate market and having to spend the rest of his life in a 'kiraane ki dukan' (General store). Calm down angry young man, it's not good for your health.
7. He asks about his schedule to Rajesh (his secretary? then who was Aman? Lol. Whatever.)
8. Oh. So Bitwa eats oats(or toasts? Whatever.) for breakfast everyday. He is surprised to see channe ki roti, (orange-?) juice and fruits. He asks about the change and-
9. There comes his Di. "Hum jaante the, ki tum hume miss kar rahe hoge, chhotte." Look at his face. It's like 'not again'. Lol. Just sibling things.
10. So, Di wants her chhotte to complete her mannat and Our Bitwa has a very valid question, "Di mannat aapne maangi hai toh mujhe kyun puri karni padegi?" (Di, if you had asked for the wish then why do I have to complete it?) Lol. Just some Bitwa things.
11. I agree with Bitwa, here, Di. Why does he have to- OH OH OH I FORGOT- HE HAS TO MEET HIS WIFE THERE. HOW STUPID OF ME TO FORGET. Lol.
12. On a serious note, I hope you know the symbolization, here, Anjali, herself, called Khushi into Arnav's life, as his mannat.
13. Arnav, begrudgingly, accepts to go to the dargah for completing the wish. But. Of course. Without having the channe ki rotis, his Di made.
14. Excuse? Me? Khushi? Is? Still? Making? Jalebis? Like? What the-?
15. HAhahahahahisddifvoaidawdw. Jalebiyan ka mount everest. I am wheezing. (Jalebis' mount everest)
16. Lol. In an interview, Sanaya had mentioned that she likes all type of sweets except jalebis. I cannot help myself but focus on that thing. Babuji offers her a jalebi and Khushi is shown taking a bite, only that Sanaya did not take a bite, she just pretended to. I just cannot overlook it. Ok back to the serious-ness. Stop distracting me, okay?
17. I want to say something. I- it's so beautiful and heart touching, a father consoling his daughter but making her understand her mistake but also making her feel that whatever she did, that is to stand up against dowry system, is also A VERY RIGHT DECISION, but her way of taking matters into her hand, was also very wrong, she should have talked about this to her father. I felt so at peace. The father-daughter duo give off such a beautiful, soft and touching vibe.
18. He also consoles her for the things that Buaji said to her last night. In fact, he started the conversation with those words. Coz he knows and understands how gut wrenching it might have been to listen those harsh words.
19. The society people gather up and show their support and understanding towards Shashi babu and his family.
20. Stop making those annoying faces, Buaji.
21. Bitwa is on his way to the dargah. He asks his manager not to cancel his meeting but says will get delayed by 10-15 minutes.
22. They have reached the dargah. Khushi's first ever 'Laad Governor' makes an appearance. She talks of giving him a mouthful if she sees him ever again.
23. Did you notice this too? Arnav has changed his suit. Earlier, this morning he was wearing a grey? suit, i think and now there's a shiny black suit, with black aviators.
24. He starts walking and guess what, the cravat is back. *heart eyes*
25. Bitwa is well, Bitwa. Someone comes and tries to ward off evil eye with those peacock feathers and the way he dodges it off with making that face. Lol.
26. Payal tells Khushi to cover her head and Arnav, being an obedient jethji/jijaji, covers his head as well.
27. Is it coincidental that the first syllable of Arziyaan song starts just as Arnav enters the frame? And also the fact that the song is addressed in first person pronoun so it seems like it's been sung on Arnav's behalf.
28. "Tere derr pe jhuka hun, mitta hun, bana hun." (I have been destroyed and re-made myself (by hardships of life?) and I am bowing down at your doorstep.) This line, in fact, this whole song is made for our dear broken Arnav baby only, and only for him. I got emotional. Wow. Back to the epi.
29. Payal goes to take the niyaaz and Khushi crosses Arnav's way and her dupatta wraps up around his head. I think, he is kind of intrigued by it, coz he keeps looking at the back of that girl, in all white. Also, maybe tries to -identify?- her-what's with that unreadable expression Bitwa?
30. "Pyaas le ke aaya tha, dariya woh bhar laaya, noor ki barish mein, beeghta-sa tar aaya."
How beautifully these lines along with Arnav entering the main entrance of the dargah, have been synced together. I mean. Wow. (Click the lines to read the translation.)
31. Inside the mazhaar. Khushi, what is this behaviour? Wait for your husband.
32. I really got a few second goosebumps here. The fact that they are just a mere inches away, separated by that-wall?- tying the sacred threads, praying for their loved ones.
(Arnav, I hope so you are praying and not thinking that you are the mighty ASR and you don't need all that blessings and shit, just pray. For yourself. For your mental health, my boy. You need it. Believe me. You really do.)
33. "O ek khushboo aati thi, mein bhatakta jata tha,reshm-si maya thi, aur main takta jata tha."
Are they hinting at the telepathy that Arnav will start experiencing after a few days? Uhhuhh, foreshadowing, I see. Writers are very clever.
34. Khushi is complaining, to Khwajaji, about her meeting with 'woh'. Lol. Tell me Khushi. Who is this 'woh' here? I did not understand.
Also, Khushi says that, for the first time, she had to hide something from her babuji which means no one knows about their first meeting yet.
Khushi and her 'woh' sitting opposite to each other. One complaining while the other listening looking around with a frown in his face.
35. Do you know this fact that girls in India, after getting married, address their husband as 'woh' to every one else and even if they have to take their name, they add an extra 'ji' after it.
Did you see what I did there? Heh. I iz veri kelever.
Bitwa is looking at his wife leaving, after ranting about him.
36. Are you following her Bitwa? Do you love her already? So. Both are there, to tie their 'mannat ka tala'. Khushi prays to Khwajaji, to get her sister married to a good man, as she cannot bear to see her sad. On the contrary, look at Bitwa's face. He is doing 'all this' just for 'his Di's happiness.' And careless bitwa, instead of keeping the key in his pocket, lets it slip away from his hands. I realized that I loved the BG score here.
But, his wife Khushi will make sure he rightfully gets back his mannat ki chabi. Look at Arnav's face, when she calls out, to hand him the key. He already knows it's the same girl (the girl from that previous night).
37. He does not turn immediately. Look closely, he turns as if to gauge her reaction. Her polite-slight- smile drops as she realizes that it's her 'woh'. Khushi, still very much affected by last night's harassment, clutches her neck-line, in fear. Arnav looks at her face, already smitten tells her to 'phek do' it. (Throw away)
Turns back and leaves. Khushi realizes that he 'phir suna diya' to her. (He, again, had the last word.)
38. The BG score, that is playing, here, is basically played for Khushi every time whenever she has an idea for some thing in general or is talking to devi maiyya (i think?) or is talking to herself or is ranting about her LG or has a 'brilliant' idea to exasperate her LG and here, is giving a pep talk to herself.
39. Arnav is doing his ASR walk without disturbing anyone and Khushi is doing her 'Hum Khushi Kumari Gupta' style running, skidding, jumping and scaring everyone around her, with her chaotic run.
40. Khushi comes to a stop. Arnav notices her and stops as well. My God. How is it possible that I can literally feel her, being out of breath and not being able to get out a single word from her mouth, without breathing loudly, just after running a -what-few meters-? Lol. I love Sanaya.
41. Bitwa is like 'calm down babe, have some water and sit down first.' So, Arnav is staring at her and walking towards her, with slow and careful steps. Khushi, obviously afraid, steps away from him, trying to maintain a safe distance.
42. Screen freezes at Khushi's face and starts to fade out. *quickly pauses it* Precap. Don't like spoilers.
P.S. : I thought their argument over god and their beliefs would be in this one only. Btw, I loved Khushi's look and hair as well. Arnav's was fine. I loved loved loved babuji's scene with Khushi in the morning. I loved it. It was so soothing for Khushi, as well as, for all of us viewers too. Also, all the 'wife' and 'woh' jokes that I made for Khushi and Arnav are still not relevant, here, because of the harassment that was shown in the last one, so please don't take it seriously, I just did it to add some humor to it. Please don't take it the wrong way. Ok, bye. Have a great day/night ahead. God bless you.

Out of curiosity, has anyone following this blog ever seen Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon (probably among the handful of desis)?
I'm thinking of blogging a rewatch (because it's summer and this is the TV equivalent of a beach read) and I thought it could be fun to trade thoughts.
Like, I'm sure my mom would enjoy chatting it up but I'm not sure I want to detail to her all the things I'd like to do to Barun Sobti, as cool as she is for a mom.

Let's talk about some heavy stuff. I don't mind watching something problematic as long as it is portraited as such.
When I watched this episode then and even now I don't find it out-of-character as some might find,I had reason I'll discuss. did I find it problematic? yes, sure, he was not reading her body language right, she was terrified. was it portraited as problematic? yes, I never felt that the show was trying to romanticise this situation inspite of the romantic music. Because the music and the song was for Arnav only, not for them as a couple. If what he intended to do was successful, then I would have a problem with it. To my understanding,Arnav was having a different types of turmoil in his mind.
I will talk about two things.
Arnav's abandonment issue
Arnav's PTSD
This was the episode that was telecasted on 13 august, 2012. I have a post highlighted many days that have the probability of being the last day of their contact marriage, mainly because it was fun. And also if anyone watched IPKKND now, they have no way to tell which is the last day as no character mentioned it.But since 2012, the episode where he said 'I love you, damnit' was the last day of their contact marriage as canon for me.So, I watched this episode and still do with the mindset that it's the last day.
Arnav's Abandonment issue
Arnav was terrified of losing people he loved, that didn't need any explanation. That fear came from losing his mother, who he loved most. Also because his mother left him instead of staying alive for his sake. Arnav had been on a emotional roller-coster ride since the moment he met khushi. He fought so hard to not fall for her,but end up doing the very same thing that destroyed his parents. That day on terrace, among many thing, he lost the girl he loved as well. That's a different kind of pain.the person was not dead, she was even his wife, but to him he lost the girl, he loved and dreamt to have a future with. That marriage was as painful and toxic for him as it was for khushi.
Then against all odds,he got her back again, which was very short-lived,his fear almost came true, she stopped breathing. just notice what he was kept chanting '' you can't do this to me ''. And then he continued to go through situation where he could lose her again and again. He started to feel detached from her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then he just got her back home by using all the tricks in his arsenal - trying to be vulnerable, threat, manipulation and what not.I think Arnav understood to a extent the reason behind her leaving home under the guise of buaji's illness,as she couldn't live in a house where everyone is bothered by her.He understood that khushi was making herself responsible for everyone's pain and punishing herself as such.Remember how he was having a conversation with a sleeping khushi about how di would understand. Then he tried his level best to make her comfortable in his home,to make shantivan her home too.All the gifts were indication of that, then return to her fav bed side, trying to establish her status in his household.
But return of dadi and her defiance to accept khushi, surely bothered Arnav to a great extend. She started to antagonise khushi with every chance she got. And the clock of contact marriage was ticking.Even if it was not the last day, how dadi was trying to throw khushi out of the house, At that point if khushi again tried to leave Arnav,it would had been very difficult for Arnav to get her back again. Then khushi started talking about their marriage not being complete. I got a feeling here that Arnav was planning something for convincing khushi of his love, but with return of dadi, returned his PTSD,that rendered him unable to perform what he was planning. But if they consumated the marriage, then it would mean a great deal to khushi and she would not leave him if she accepted him as her husband.I think he became desperate here. And as khushi best responded when she was challenged to do something, he selected that method to achieve his goal. So, in the last day of contact marriage, he tried to consumate their marriage. And together with his triggered PTSD, the situation in hand became very messy.
Arnav's PTSD
It was established in the show that when Arnav is triggering his untreated and unaddressed PTSD reared it's ugly head and he ended up doing terrible things.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I just see a pattern. If his PTSD was not triggered, then he would have been patient and more in-tune with khushi just like he was on bachelor night.
But this post isn't a justification of his action. I just understand why he did whatever he'd done that night like I understand why he tore her dori the very first time he met her. He was absolutely wrong in both situation.
I just feel very bad for both Arnav and khushi in this episode. Bitwa just wanted that one thing in his life to go smoothly. And khushi wasn't letting it happen,so he was very angry at her.And on the other hand the dadi, who was very essential for him in his childhood just kept pestering him.And khushi, oh baby, God bless you. Just a few days khushi, then you wouldn't need any proof of his love, you would be so sure of that.
My scattered thoughts (8/?)

IPKKND/Teri Meri-12th Anniversary
PART 1 [ Read Here]
❤️Dance of Souls 💞
Tumblr media
A pure Passion, which was flowing with wings on the screen. The love and the passion is taking new shape here. The passion started the day when she fell in his arms, and his heart felt the beat the very first time.
Tumblr media
“A woman in love respects and raises her man. She is his constant source of support. She matches his heart and passions with her own. She sees the very best in him, even when he does not. She is his foundation; what he returns home to.”― Elizabeth Bourgeret
ASR was in a closed room, a bit dark, with a streak of light like a hope to see her again...and he stood in the light and in a white attire. Unlike all the time, with his button-up shirts and vests, he has his buttons open and loose shirt... She was on the poolside, immersed in his thoughts, under the stars. The ones were their guiding light tonight. Her beliefs were raising his hopes to be with her at all costs.
Physical attraction can only maintain a relationship for so long.  ASR scanned the stars for thoughts, but like how the moon and earth are in an eternal dance with each other, there must be another force holding them together, something not visible to our eyes. Likewise, two individuals must be mentally and emotionally attracted and equally understanding each other for their gravity to hold them together. Their love and their relationship had crossed another level.
Her image mirrored in his eyes, in his heart and brain. Embracing that image, he found her right before him like an angel. Tightly holding their breath, two swaying silhouettes kept walking towards each other in secret, shielded by night, soothing unquenched thirst for one another. Their throbbing hearts,
finding peace in fervour.
Tumblr media
He came from the dark to the light and then faced her while she didn't lose eye contact without moving...an acceptance of Love from his side with purity within from both sides. She will never move from her protective and lovable side for her man, just like him, as he encircled her before grabbing her by her waist to pull her closer and digging his face into the curve of her neck to dominate his love and trust. He was missing her badly. She surrendered to him with closed eyes by putting aside all her worries, burdens, and fears by clasping his hands with hers to show her trust and complete faith in him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They were both willing to submit their souls, putting aside inhibitions, misunderstandings, fears, confusions, and barriers. She turned around and showed her complete trust by looking into his intense eyes, so close to his heart, by caressing his face with her hand, and the moment he touched her face, she lowered her eyes and hand and turned to walk away and then paused. All she could see was his pain and yearning for her in his eyes.
She knew he wanted her, but he wouldn't be able to say that ...She knew he had called her many times during this abduction. She had heard his pleas; she knew what his heart wanted all along. Tonight, he answered her desperate need as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I Can’t Live Without You.” expresses the whole meaning of true love. It is a beautiful and powerful emotion words can never express, nor can the mind comprehend its connection within two souls.”― Ellen J. Barrier
Their love was like the relationship between the sun, moon, and the earth. They revolved around each other. They were yin and yang. Night and day. Feminine and masculine counterparts. And they loved each other dearly. This woman changed him completely; he loved her; he wanted her so badly he couldn't taste the fear of losing her every second. He desired to take this fire and tried to keep it inside him. He would never be letting it go.
They both followed their hearts, and the pull made them move towards each other. She permanently surrendered to his protective and possessive side. Feeling safe and at home in his embrace, he melted under his touch as he held her face with both hands. With an open heart, she submitted to his love, but the next moment, she lowered her eyes to hide her pain. Suddenly she disappeared from his hands like someone snatched her away from him...
"Kyuon Khuda tun ne mujhe aisa Khawab dikhaya jab haqiat main ussey todna tha..."
"Ek dooje se huwe juda jab ek dooje keh liye bane"
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He turned briskly, lost in his search, but she ran back to him and hugged him, clinging to him without leaving any air in between. Clasping him tightly, she reassured his presence within her, and he didn't remove her either.
He leaned towards her and listened to every beat her heart made for him. Holding her hand with his, not letting her disappear again, he turned towards her, and she hugged him. She had been screaming for his touch, his love, all this time, and he had given into his own longing for her.
“I felt his pain as my own, and I wanted to touch him, feel him, reach inside his fractured heart and pull out all of the love he buried inside. I wanted to kiss every inch of his skin. I wanted to feel his brokenness against mine, like if we held each other hard enough, something within us would finally heal.”
― Jacqueline Simon Gunn
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Erupting like fiery autumn leaves between silks as skin meets skin, flames that lick everything and consume all there is.” ― Sreesha Divakaran,
He didn't let his grip on her lose, or she even let him do so as she pulled his hand to embrace her. She embraced him, encircling him with all of his strength and love with both hands. He was embracing her, hugging her, soothing her with both hands while his one hand was on her head.
His assurance,
His Love,
His support
Tumblr media
His dark eyes and wicked ways had her hooked, and without him now, she wouldn't live or he could survive. They were addicted to each other. He has worked his way into her blood, and now they are here. There was no going back.
A woman who thought she was ordinary learned she was not when she found his love across miles tonight.
When she thought he was his beginning, he discovered she was his end.
Like the night mist twining itself about the hills and hollows of the land, he enfolded her within him, his touch and warmth circled her in, pressing himself more to her, holding her from her bare waist.
She was his, now and forever, no matter what was waiting next. No matter how much others might try to drive them apart or discourage their union, no matter how much they might grow to hate them, seeing these intense feelings between them. But right now, he was stirring in her. No matter what he had done…
This man, this demon, this Shaitan… he was her prince.
His eyes screamed to tell her he always swam against the grain. The ruling mind who influenced the heart always controlled what he did, how he did it, and when. But lately, he had made his own choices that he disliked. His mind and doubts pressured him, forcing him to keep her away from him. But tonight, he wanted to confess that all he wanted was her...
I need you because I love you...
But she walks away again, sadness covering her leaving him there.
"Khushi..."
When he realised she was no longer closer, he called her name intensely.
And, she heard him miles away.. ...
"His Light was within Him" now...he didn't have to look for her any more. He had this belief. His angel resided in him now...as when he called her name, her reflection was in the pool water before she turned around over his call ... He could feel her, she could feel him, and they both could communicate from miles away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Arnav assuredly, with his full belief, called out to Khushi..." Khushi tum sun sakti ho mujhe, (he was still looking for confirmation... the logic) and...
Khushi's answer was the answer to his unheard prayers...
" Hamesha" ...( Always)
She confirmed as well
"Kya aap sun sakte hain humari Dhadkan"
Without any hesitation, he confessed.
Haan!
" Hamesha" ...( Always)

I love your blog. Thank you for the blg. My my question is if arnav witness whole terrace scene not what shown in show, what will be his reaction? Will he beat shyam for misbehaving with khushi? I think he will get angry on khushi for hiding. Will he protect khushi along with anjali from shyam?
Hell Anon,
Thanks for the love.
If Arnav heard the whole confrontation, you can expect a good lot of slaps from Arnav, Khushi, the Raizadas on Shyam. Akash and Payal's marriage would be strained as the Guptas hiding the truth was a breach of trust. Shyam would've been kicked out on that very day. The timing was right.
Best,
JWB

Is it too spicy if I say this is IPK themed 👀
No but for real this is a great flaw of so many Indian tv shows and unfortunately, IPK is no exception. A "perfect" female lead is NOT EQUAL TO a well written female lead and Khushi falls into this trope.
I get that it might seem like, if any thing, the show makers are biased towards Khushi. The narrative portrays Khushi as morally righteous even when she isn't (her lecturing about marriage and religion to Arnav and La; her bringing Shyam back against Arnav's wishes; her leaving Arnav for Aarav etc etc) and posits her as a totally innocent victim in many scenarios without giving any acknowledgement of her critical errors in judgement that led to specific situations - such as keeping Shyam's secret. But the truth is, these biases are only the result of the absolute lack of care they put towards writing and developing Khushi's character arc. And of course in general, she's better written than majority of Indian tv heroines because in general, IPKKND is a better written show. But within this same show, you have the example of a brilliantly written anti-hero with complex and satisfying character development; so it hurts to see how they have simply not bothered giving the same level of in-depth and CONSISTENT characterization for Khushi.
No matter how off the rails the show was, or whatever their constraints were with regards to commercial or channel expectations, they rarely compromised on Arnav's characterization which was always crystal clear and razor sharp. In the midst of the silly Swami track, the nonsense Sheetal track, heck in the laughably ridiculous Miss India track, Arnav was not made to do or act in un-Arnav like ways, for the most part. There are a few exceptions, but they're not very noteworthy and don't impact the plot much. They had a clear idea of who he is and what he would do and not do, and they stuck to it.
Not so with Khushi. In a weird parallel to in-universe dynamics, the meta narrative too picks Khushi as the most convenient sacrificial lamb whose characterization is sacrificed to meet channel demands, tv show format demands, and so on. Need to shoe-horn a comedy track where it makes no sense? Why not reduce her IQ several points and have her do totally illogical things with no rhyme or reason for some laughs? Need a low-effort way to justify Khushi spending time with Arnav? Why not make the "mature for her age" Khushi into a childish caricature who plays at being Gopi Bahu to annoy Arnav! Need a sick Arnav for Khushi to take care of? Why not have a selfless and responsible Khushi suddenly transform into someone so selfish and irresponsible, she plots to deliberately make her diabetic husband starve.
On the one hand, they erase all of her positive qualities to give her a host of flaws (stupidity, immaturity, irresponsibility) that are never explored as flaws, but just tools for comedy, picked up and abandoned at whim. On the other hand, her actual flaws and mistakes that could have used an in-depth arc are just...left alone. In fact what even are her flaws? As per the show, she has practically none - they are only lovable quirks.
Arnav's extreme reactions often eclipse Khushi's mistakes; we nor her get the time to sit with and reflect on her errors, instead the focus immediately shifts to him. Her mistakes are so disproportionally punished, it leaves no room for her character development. Character development is best prompted by moments of reflection, regret, and redemption. We get very, very few of these with Khushi - there's simply no space for it in the narrative of the show.
Its a very subtle distinction that is hard to pinpoint at times. For example, we see Khushi's pain showcased front and center time and again - its the classic suffering heroine trope! But is her trauma from Shyam, from Arnav, heck even from her own family, EVER explored in any real meaningful and satisfying way? No - because Khushi's interiority, just like her brain power, maturity, and sense of responsibility, disappears and reappears as per the convenience of the narrative.
You might say its unfair to compare her to Arnav, who is undoubtedly the protagonist of the show. Unusually for romcoms, Arnav is our main character and Khushi is the "love interest". So perhaps we can't expect her character to be explored with the same range and nuance his is. Okay. But consistency, surely, is something we can expect from Khushi? Why is Khushi EVEN MORE inconsistently written than the villain, Shyam, and supporting characters like Anjali?
There's a lot I do love about the way Khushi is written but I HAVE to sift through the material to find the good stuff which is often in contradiction to the bad stuff. Post the elopement, we see really very little consistent characterization with Khushi and the show's overall writing quality heavily suffers as a direct result of this.
And this IS a sexist trope. It falls into the madonna-whore dichotomy where you can only write 2 types of lead female characters: a perfect angel, who is always morally right and usually suffering without much else going on internally; or the vamp, who has her flaws and her complexities with which she entertains us until she is suitably humiliated and punished by the narrative.
A woman with flaws, allowed to learn and grow from them into a more mature and evolved human being??? Who ever heard of such a thing??? Certainly not ITV writers, circa 2011 (or now).

IPKKND LIVE BLOG - Season 1 [Epi - 2]
Cooooommmmmmmeeee ooooooonnnnnnnn, letz start the second epiiiiiiiiii.
So we are starting right from where we had left them off. ANDDDDD BAAAAMMMM! Khushi jolts out of her (or rather their?) trance and realizes where her hand is, snatches it back. Pulling out Arnav from his trance as well.
I want you to focus on their expressions in the scene. Look closely, when she snatches her hand away from his collar. His gaze, instantly falls down to her hand and there's a moment where he steels himself and maybe even thinks that 'How dare she!'.
It's as if Arnav realizes that he needs to be angry and THEN all hell breaks lose, as he throws her out of his hands. He orders the head of his PR team to control the photos and videos of this 'scandal'. Khushi is locked in a room for interrogation.
Back in Gomti Sadan, the neighborhood aunties are gossiping about Khushi's absence. Buaji asks about the papers' whereabouts to Payal. But, Payal, already very nervous and tongue-tied, reduces to tears. I am surprised why did Buaji not see the change in her demeanor and most importantly her spilled tears. But, that's also not much surprising coz Buaji can hardly ever read Payal or Khushi's distress over anything that they seem to be facing alone, in the entire show. This scene also indicates that Payal has never been the rule-breaker kid, she's always been kind of a 'yes-man' to her parents.
Ohh! Did you notice how Khushi's voice sounds so off? Do you know why? Turns out Sanaya was sick with cold while shooting this sequence. She mentioned this in that interview with Mrs. Gul Khan, which was released right after IPK ended a few months ago.
Arnav instructs the team to interrogate Khushi and check whether a rival company (Re-Fashion? RI-Fashion? REE-Fashion? whatever, lol.) send her there to ruin his fashion show in exchange of some petty amount of money.
Payal's belief, of her Abhishek ji standing up to his family's demand of the dowry, breaks. She realizes that he is present there, knows everything going on but still refuses to speak up. She is heart-broken.
Was it only me or you also thought that the way Sanaya pronounced 'profession' is kind of-idk-intriguing?-sexy?-hot?-pata nahi choro (ok, leave it.)
Garima tries to associate the papers' absence to Khushi's absence. Payal has been caught like a deer caught in headlights.
Arnav comes to meet or rather to interrogate his wife 'that' girl, for 'answers'. Khushi requests him to let her go as she explains him that she landed there by mistake.
He is so adamant in throwing all the unfortunately familiar 'accusatory' questions. What was that 'Wipro-Fashion'? 'PRO-Fashion'? Whatever. See, many of you would disagree, here, but I think he is legit right in doubting her intentions, given the type of people he would have dealt with till now in this profession. Although, WE know, from Khushi's POV, that she is right, BUT that's the thing, he doesn't.
"Then let it (the marriage) break. Problems like these are nothing for girls like you. If one leaves, then trap another." ("Toh tut jaane do shaadi. Tum jaisi ladkiyon ka kya hai. Ek jayega, dusra phasaa lena.") And the BG score changes to something close to tandav beats. Maybe, just maybe he realized that he has struck a chord or crossed a line or fcked up real bad. It can be any of the three.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh! The dreaded moment is here. Khushi retaliates but she does not realize the volcano in front of her, ready to burst out with hot, molten lava. She attempts to side step him but he grabs her by the arm and yanks at the dori of her blouse. Pearls scatter around, everywhere on the floor. Khushi is horror struck, devastated, horrified and all the girls watching this for the first time already knew what that meant. And hated Arnav for doing that to her for a long, long time.
See the irony, here. In the previous episode, we saw them together in that beautiful frame. No-one had any doubt of them being the alpha couple of the show. BUT. BUT. BUT.
After this scene, audience must have doubted, some might even have gone to the extent to declare Arnav as the villain. And later considered Shyam as the hero, coz of the way, he was introduced (we will come to that in that episode).
Hmm. I am thinking. Why did he let her go? Like? So....easily? After she pulled the ribbon from her hair and covered her exposed back, or rather her modesty. Arnav has frozen. At his spot. He isn't even moving a finger. (I will have to process this scene and then will let you know in a separate post.)
With this, the scene blurs and along with Khushi, we reach Gomti Sadan, where everything is eerily silent. Wait. Did we reach so early? Didn't Khushi take the whole day to reach SM? Then how come- ohh Guilty Arnav might have arranged a car for her to reach her home safely-Lol. Who am I kidding with? This is ASR, we are talking about. Let's stop with the wishful thinking.
Gomti Sadan. Gossips. Malign in their social image. A broken marriage. All of these are termed as a "Kali' (black ink) by Buaji. And who's at fault? Khushi. She talks of pulling off her braid and handing it to her. Basically, beat her ass off.
Buaji, I think, was never able to accept Khushi as her own child. She was always the only one to differentiate between the two. She was only the one who instigated Garima and Shashi against her. Although, Shashi had wholeheartedly accepted her as his daughter but Garima, often used to get manipulated into believing the worst, in Khushi.
Even now both Buaji and Garima are convinced that Khushi was, somehow, jealous of her sister's fate (that she was getting married) and so to malign it, she decided to sabotage the wedding by taking away the papers and fleeing out of everyone's sight until the wedding is called off.
Lol. Junior Engineer. And Buaji thinks, that's self-explanatory for them, having a right to ask for a dowry. Khushi explains herself. But, she is admonished by her (B-ji), for acting like a 'Dadi Amma', means trying to act above her age, by interfering in elders' matters.
Still, for the Guptas', specifically for Mrs. Garima Gupta, a broken marriage is worse than Payal getting married into a money-hungry family. Do you see it here? Getting MARRIED is of more importance than getting married into THE RIGHT FAMILY.
And as if all this admonishing and insulting is not enough, so, she kind of disowns her daughter. "Mat kaho hume Amma".
Khushi, who already had abandonment issues, guilt of being a burden to 'this' family, is now shell shocked. Someone please save this poor kid.
Buaji does it again! Hip, hip hurray guys! She again pulls up the orphan card and a non-refundable debt (of getting adopted by her brother and sister in law) card! What an awesome timing Buaji! Shut up Buaji. What? Shashi said this. Not me. I have manners, ok.
"Arre tujhse saga humara koi nahi hai." Payal's words calms Khushi to some extent. But, they are still not enough as we see that Khushi cannot sleep, and keeps tossing and turning, recalling her amma's harsh words.
She wakes up and opens their shop's door. Khushi is shown handling an LPG gas cylinder, an oil cannister and lighting a match stick, giving us the impression of her attempting to give up her life.
Precap starts. *quickly pauses it* I don't watch precaps. Spoilers. Don't like them. Bye. Such a stressful episode to watch.

P.S. : Remember the interview I was talking about? This is it. Please do give it a watch if you haven't already. It's so beautiful them sharing the off-screen things and being all nostalgic. You'll love it. :)
