BEARS DOMINATE BIG SPLASH
#4 Cal Earns Largest Win Ever Over #3 Stanford
STANFORD – Closing out the regular season Friday at No. 3 Stanford, the No. 4 California women's water polo team defeated the Cardinal in historical fashion, 11-6 behind huge performances by goalkeeper Isabel Williams and attacker Elena Flynn.
Williams had 15 saves for the fifth time this season and Flynn poured in a Golden Bear career-high five goals as they led Cal to its largest margin of victory over Stanford (16-5, 4-2) since 1997. Along with helping hold the Cardinal to a season low in goals, Williams also became the second player in program history to reach 800 career saves.
Flynn single-handedly outscored Stanford in the opening half, pouring in her fourth goal on her fifth attempt in the final seconds of the second quarter. She tied a season high with five goals, firing in all five from distance.
It didn't take long for the Bears (15-5, 4-2) to take control of the game. On their first possession, senior Maddie DeMattia collected a pass in traffic from Claire Rowell and wrapped it around the defense for a slick backhand goal. The Bears held the lead the rest of the way.
Flynn put Cal ahead 3-0 with back-to-back goals midway through the first. In the closing moments of the period, junior Jessie Rose found senior Reagan Whitney in deep for a composed finish in front of goal, making it 4-1.
Looking to flip the script before things got too out of hand, Stanford earned a penalty on the first play of the second quarter. However, for the fourth consecutive game, Williams forced a penalty miss, remaining in a central position while extending her right arm out to stop the shot in its tracks. The Bears continued to pour it on from there, converting a pair of 6-on-5s with a goal by junior Rozanne Voorvelt and a quick strike from straightaway by Flynn to go up 6-1.
The Cardinal started to get its offense on track with two goals late in the half, but the Bears had an answer on both occasions. Voorvelt found senior Maryn Dempsey wide open on the left side to fire one into the top corner. With two seconds left on the clock, Flynn slotted in another shot from deep center, giving her four goals to Stanford's three at the break.
The second half provided a slow offensive start from both sides, but a pair of back-breaking goals by Rose and yet another penalty save by Williams quelled any chance of a late comeback. Flynn beat the shot clock and rocketed in her fifth goal at the 3:37 mark of the fourth to give the Bears their largest lead of the day, 11-5. She now owns team highs in goals (38), five-goal games (2) and four-goal games (4).
With their upset win, Cal now heads into the MPSF Championship in Indiana as a #2 seed. They are one of the few teams that will have a winning record against other top-5 nationally-ranked teams.
No. 5 California 11, No. 3 Stanford 6 Cal 4 4 1 2 – 11 Stan 1 2 2 1 – 6 Cal Goals: Elena Flynn 5, Jessie Rose 2, Maryn Dempsey, Maddie DeMattia, Rozanne Voorvelt, Reagan Whitney Stan Goals: Sophie Wallace 2, Christina Hicks, Eleanor Facey, Kamryn Barone, Skyler Jones Cal Saves: Isabel Williams 15 Stan Saves: Maya Avital 6

One of the arguable weaknesses of 2022's Scrooge: A Christmas Carol, yet one of its most interesting aspects, is how much it derives from other adaptations of A Christmas Carol, both major and minor. Having just watched and rewatched so many versions, I can name a long list of inspirations that this version draws from others.
I'm not counting the parallels with Scrooge (1970), because this version is officially a remake of that one. But it draws considerably from other versions too.
*Scrooge has a bulldog, Prudence, who serves as his constant, often comic companion. – The 1997 animated version, where Scrooge has a similar bulldog companion named Debit.
(Note: While I think it's out of character for Scrooge to own a dog no matter what, I do think Debit is better utilized than Prudence. In the first place, Scrooge keeps him for practical reasons, as a guard dog to scare away unwanted visitors, and he acts fierce because Scrooge has trained him to, even though he really wants to be friendly; Prudence is just a pet, without a scary bone in her body. Secondly, Scrooge treats him shabbily at first, always snapping at him and insulting him; only after his transformation does he treat him with kindness. 2022 Scrooge is reasonably kind to Prudence from the start, which is more politically correct but detracts from his character arc. I like Prudence's role in Christmas Yet to Come, though, where she sees future-Scrooge's coffin and tries in vain to convey the bad news to present-Scrooge, and where her future self is the only creature who mourns at Scrooge's grave.)
*Tiny Tim has a chronic cough. – The Muppet Christmas Carol and Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001).
*Marley's Ghost (and Scrooge's ghost in the future) has coins for eyes. – Disney's 2009 motion-capture film, with its prologue that shows Marley's body in his coffin with coins placed on his eyes to keep them closed, which Scrooge steals to recompense himself for the undertaker's fee.
*Marley's jaw accidentally comes unhinged as he speaks to Scrooge, and the moment is played for laughs (unlike in the book, where he purposefully lets it drop to scare Scrooge and it's played for horror). – Again, Disney's 2009 motion-capture film also does this.
*The Ghost of Christmas Past is a living candle, with a wax body and a flame on her head. – Again, Disney's 2009 motion-capture film, which also gives the Ghost a candle-inspired design.
*Scrooge's childhood is rewritten to resemble Charles Dickens's childhood, so that instead of being abandoned in boarding school by his father, he's forced to work in a boot-blacking factory after his father is sent to debtor's prison. – A Christmas Carol: The Musical (2004), which makes the same change.
*In the past, Jacob Marley is portrayed as much older than Scrooge and an established businessman, whose apprentice Scrooge was before he became his partner, whom he left Fezziwig to work for, and whose influence slowly corrupted him. – The 1951 Alastair Sim version, where an original businessman character named Mr. Jorkin plays much the same role that Marley does in the 2022 version.
(Note: I like the fact that this version uses Marley in a Mr. Jorkin- inspired role. I've often thought to myself that the 1951 film could have easily used Marley in that role instead of adding a new character. After all, the fact that Marley is dead and that his ghost's hair and clothes are 18th century in style could well imply that he was much older than Scrooge.)
*Scrooge's sister Jen died in childbirth, which is why Scrooge despises his nephew. – Many adaptations, but the first that I know of where Fan died in childbirth was the 1951 Alastair Sim version.
*Isabel sees Scrooge and Marley sending a poor baker (Bob Cratchit's father) to debtor's prison, and this becomes her catalyst for ending her engagement to Scrooge. – The 1935 Seymour Hicks version, where Belle sees Scrooge being merciless to a poor debtor couple in his office.
*Scrooge sings to his younger self in "Later Never Comes," begging him not to let Isabel go. – The 1999 Patrick Stewart version, Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001), and A Christmas Carol: The Musical (2004), where he shouts at his younger self to go after Belle.
*The Ghost of Christmas Present is portrayed as a black man – A Christmas Carol: The Musical (2004), where he's also a black man, and the 1997 animated version, where she's a black woman.
*The Cratchit children include identical twin girls. – The Muppet Christmas Carol's Belinda and Bettina.
*The Ghost of Christmas Present clutches his heart in pain when his time on earth comes to an end. – Disney's 2009 motion-capture film (although there the Ghost dies, decays, and tuns to dust, while here he transforms into the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come).
*The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come has glowing eyes. – The 1999 Patrick Stewart version.
*When Bob is mourning at Tiny Tim's grave, Tim's crutch is propped against the grave marker. – Mickey's Christmas Carol, where Mickey/Bob places it there, and A Christmas Carol: The Musical (2004), where Mrs. Cratchit places it there.
*Scrooge sees his own burial, carried out by two cheerfully disrespectful men. – Again, Mickey's Christmas Carol.
*Scrooge sees his own ghost rise from his grave in Christmas Yet to Come. – The 2006 animated film, where he sees his own ghost wandering with Marley.
*Instead of pleading for himself at his own grave, Scrooge resigns himself to his damnation, but begs to be allowed to save Tiny Tim. – The 2019 miniseries with Guy Pearce.
I could probably find of even more influences if I rewatched the movie a second time. But even just watching it once, I noticed this formidable list. I guess this sort of thing happens when a book has been adapted so many, many times.

Did Richard III marry anne Neville out of love or because of his ambition? Did he love Anne or was he loyal to her because of religious reasons?
Hi! It's possible they fell in love during their marriage — I mean, we don't really know anything about their married life: as expected there's really not much of it documented, not many public appearances together, no recorded exchange of gifts etc that might have given us a clue. However, love doesn't seem to have been the reason for their marriage. In fact, we have strong clues that it wasn't. @lady-plantagenet can talk about this better, but it would have been a mutually beneficial alliance in the situation Anne found herself in when she was kept by her sister and her husband George of Clarence after her first husband's demise. According to John Paston's letter (dated Feb 1472), after George found out about Richard's intention to marry Anne, it so happened that:
The King entreats my Lord of Clarence for my Lord of Gloucester, and (as it is said) he answers that he may well have my lady his sister-in-law, but they shall divide no livelihood, as he says.
George offered Anne's hand to his brother but without her share of the Warwick inheritance (which so far he held integrally in right of his wife Isabel Neville); Richard refused. Of course, I think Anne herself might have refused such an arrangement but we'll never know. The fact is that Richard could've had Anne without her money and lands — I'm not saying he should have accepted her without her money and lands, it would not have been very smart, nor fair, nor in line with medieval aristocratic marriages. It just wasn't a love match situation. It wasn't the pattern that we see in the case of John of Gaunt and Katherine Swynford, Humphrey of Gloucester and Eleanor Cobham, or indeed Edward IV and Elizabeth Woodville.
The transactional nature of their marriage is evidenced elsewhere. In June 1474, Edward IV passed an act that settled Anne's inheritance. It seems that at that time Richard and Anne were still married without the proper dispensations. They were first cousins once removed—second degree of consanguinity—and related in the first degree of affinity because their respective siblings had married each other (in other words, they were siblings by marriage). They obtained a dispensation for the third and fourth degrees of affinity but not consanguinity. That means that, without seeking a proper dispensation, their marriage could be annulled at any time. The 1474 act settled that if they 'be hereafter divorced' Richard could nevertheless hang on to Anne’s share of the Warwick inheritance for life. In the case of an annulment, Anne would be free to marry someone else, except she would not be in possession of her estates and inheritance any longer.
It is possible that they received a full dispensation after that date, as some historians have claimed. The fact is that the continuator of the Croyland Chronicle said that by Christmas 1484, after the death of his heir, Richard III started thinking about contracting a second marriage 'either after the death of the queen [Anne], or by means of a divorce for which he believed he had sufficient grounds.' The chronicler does not say what were Richard's grounds for divorce — Michael Hicks speculates that the chronicler himself didn't know what those grounds were because Richard and Anne's lack of dispensation was never made public. We don't know. It makes sense that before Richard's ascension and their son's demise, there was simply no reason for them to advertise that their marriage wasn't fully valid in the eyes of the church. Richard had married the richest available heiress in England and Anne had married the only person that could stand up to George of Clarence's control of her lands: his own brother.
Did Richard love Anne? We don't know! As I said, there's really not much evidence in favour or against the notion — the haste with which Richard ultimately sought to replace Anne might not have been very tasteful, nor the public announcement that he would stop frequenting her chambers, but I suppose he was under extraordinary circumstances. We don't know if Richard had been, in fact, faithful to Anne up to that moment: he had two acknowledged bastards plus a potential third illegitimate child. Looking only at the two illegitimate children he did acknowledge, we simply don't know when they were born — they might have been born during his marriage to Anne Neville for all we know.
It's strongly suggested that his daughter Katherine was under 18 years old ('in her young age') when she married in 1484. Still, there's a case to be said that she was 14, born in 1470 before Richard fled England, and so was conceived when her father was still single. We don't know. Richard's illegitimate son John of Pontefract, in his turn, was potentially born after Richard was married. In March 1474, in Pontefract, Richard granted 'his beloved gentlewoman' Alice Burgh an annuity for life valued at £20 (a high sum at the time) 'for certain special causes and considerations'. Isabel Burgh, most likely her relative, was Edward of Middleham's nurse, so it's possible Alice herself was Anne Neville's attendant. Alice's annuity was still being paid in January 1485 (it makes sense considering that John of Pontefract was still underage). John came under the public spotlight in 1483 when he was knighted alongside his legitimate brother Edward of Middleham at York Minster. Richard referred to him as 'the lord bastard' and made him titular captain of Calais in March 1485, giving him deputies to work on his behalf while he was still underage. If he was indeed born in March 1474, the boy would have been only eleven years old.
So, well! I'm afraid my answer leaves many questions up in the air still but one thing seems to be sure: Richard and Anne's marriage was one born out of convenience/mutual benefit and interest. That does not preclude the notion that they may have grown in love with each other, and this latter notion in turn does not preclude the fact that Richard may have had other sexual partners during their marriage. We know Edward IV married Elizabeth Woodville for love and that did not stop him from having other sexual partners himself. The brothers might have been more alike than we realise, for all that Richard tried to distance himself.
Thanks for the ask, I hope this helps🌹x

has anyone read Michael Hicks’ biography of Anne Neville? is it any good? I just think Anne’s neat (and Isabel too, but man Anne had a hell of a life) but I know that unfortunately there’s not as much to go on for her.
I’m still waiting for a copy of K.L. Clark’s The Nevills of Middleham to get to me, but unfortunately it’s taking a while. any other book recs are appreciated, though! nothing too ricardian, please, if it can be avoided.

‘I’d love to see the women in my life represented on screen.’
Rarriwuy Hick likens the build-up to her first lead role in a TV drama to an athlete training for a major sporting event.
“There were months and months of preparation before pre-production,” she recalls. “Meditation, trying to find things that could ground me, working out every day with Pilates and boxing.”
To play police detective Toni Alma in True Colours, a four-part series created by Warren H. Williams and Erica Glynn, she also travelled to the production base in Alice Springs (Mparntwe) a month before shooting started. “I needed to get a sense of the pace of Alice Springs: it’s very different to where I’m from, even though it’s also the Northern Territory,” she explains.

The dancer, writer, choreographer and actor (Redfern Now, The Gods of Wheat Street, Cleverman, Wentworth) is based further north, closer to Darwin in Arnhem Land, which she describes as a long way, geographically, climatically and culturally, from the Arrernte country where the drama is set.
“We have palm trees and crystal-clear water, it’s very tropical, humid. It’s got that Bali vibe. Alice Springs has this beautiful flat desert with amazing ranges. You hardly ever see a cloud in the sky. We were filming in winter, this time last year, and it is cold. But you turn the camera on, and it doesn’t matter what time of the day, the landscape is strikingly beautiful with its bright red colours and spinifex.”

Rarriwuy Hick (right) with Deborah Mailman and Anthony Hayes in the Redfern Now episode Promise Me.
Near the start of the series, made by Bunya Productions (Mystery Road, Goldstone, Sweet Country) in association with SBS and NITV, Alma is sent from her city posting to a remote community to investigate an assault on a teenage girl, Mariah (Janaya Kopp). The fictional Perdar Theendar is where the detective was born and raised, a place where she has deep roots and a complicated history. And while her boss (Emma Jackson) believes Alma’s local knowledge will be an asset for the case, some members of the community now resentfully regard the policewoman as an outsider.
Her presence in Perdar Theendar allows the drama to explore the customs, rituals and kinship system that operate in the region. Hick, who speaks seven Indigenous dialects, learnt to speak Arrernte, as a significant amount of the dialogue in the series is spoken in the local language.
Alma’s uncle Samuel (series co-creator Williams), a community police officer, cryptically advises her soon after her arrival that “there’s a lot going on around here”, and not all of it is readily apparent, even to a woman who understands the relationships and conventions. Among the challenges, her younger brother, Keithy (Keenan Japangardi Mitchell), is acting out and a former boyfriend might know more about events that took place on secret ceremonial lands than he wants to reveal.
There’s also the uncomfortable relationship Alma has with her former romantic partner, fellow police detective Nick (Luke Arnold). Meanwhile, Alma’s mother, Vivienne (Sabella Kngwarraye Ross), works at the local community centre with a group of women creating highly marketable paintings that are being sold internationally by art dealer Isabelle (Miranda Otto).
Describing herself as “a strong Yolngu woman”, Hick sees her character as “an intuitive detective” who’s caught between two worlds. “She can speak her language and she understands cultural protocol and the importance of it,” she says. “But she’s a detective and those two worlds don’t gel and she’s trying to find her place in both. She keeps asking herself who she is and where she belongs. She wants to help her community and her family, even though sometimes what she’s doing is probably causing more problems. True Colours shows how strong the culture is in Alice Springs and also the challenges for Aboriginal people who live in both worlds, having to navigate Western society as well as their cultural obligations.”

Rarriwuy Hick (left) as Electra in Gods of Wheat Street.
Aside from the opportunity for top billing on the series, which is screening on SBS and NITV over four consecutive nights, Hick appreciated the respectful atmosphere created during the shoot.
“I really admired the way that Bunya and the directors and writers and the community came together. With the casting, we worked around the Arrernte kinship system because there are restricted relationships between certain people. When we’d film in certain areas, we’d have a traditional owner there who might tell us that the cameras can’t face in a certain direction because it’s a sacred site. Things like that are strong in the culture and they were important in the story and in the filming of it.”
With its blue skies and wide open spaces, True Colours is a long way in terms of story and location from the prison drama Wentworth, in which Hick played boxer Ruby Mitchell for the last three seasons. “If I look at my career, starting with Redfern Now and going on to Wentworth, I chose to do all of those shows and loved every one of those characters, and I learnt a lot from every one of them,” she says. “But I was in prison, or a victim of some sort. So it was good to do something where my character has authority, or she thinks she does. She’s good at what she does and it was nice to play a character who has that kind of power and strength.”
Regarding the range of roles now available to her, Hick says: “I think a change has definitely happened, but we’ve still got a long way to go. I hope that we continue to create opportunities and roles for this next generation and in particular for Aboriginal actors and Aboriginal storytelling. But I look forward to doing a romantic comedy, or playing a doctor, an educated Aboriginal woman, because I’m surrounded by them. I’d love to see the women that are in my life represented on screen.”
True Colours is on SBS and NITV, Monday-Thursday, 8.30pm.
